No goals from open play in seven league starts. That’s a statistic which, a couple of months ago, would seem improbable of a player of the stature of Robin Van Persie. It looked like he’d run and run until the end of the season; that Arsenal’s skipper had successfully broken Fantasy football and made a slot in our squads his own, with the captain’s armband soldered to his bicep.

Today’s blank in the stifling 0-0 with Chelsea at the Emirates was the latest setback for those clinging to Van Persie, in the hope that he’ll recapture the stunning form which saw him reach essential status. Certainly there’s been no let up in goal threat from Arsenal’s talisman. Today, Van Persie fired in seven efforts on goal – more than any other player in the Gameweek thus far – it was his most threatening display since Gameweek 18. Reassurance in numbers form – but is it enough?

Such statistics would indicate that his army of Fantasy owners, and those who skippered him yet again, were unfortunate to pocket just a single point after the Dutchman earned his seventh booking of the season. As Arsene Wenger commented in his post-match conference, Van Persie gave everything but, like his owners, he just got nothing back.

The question is, where do we go from here? A total of 74,000 net transfers out last week, already Van Persie is being shipped by thousands. Clearly there’s a tide turning against him as patience wears thin. Although fixtures against Stoke, Norwich and West Brom would suggest that Arsenal and Van Persie still have goals left to score.

Today’s injury to Theo Walcott won’t help acquire them – Van Persie will now have to do without his supply from the right flank for the remaining matches. However, that also deprives Arsene Wenger of the option of shifting Walcott to a central role and carrying out the unthinkable act of resting his skipper – even with 50 games in the tank. While Arsenal still have something to play for, Van Persie will surely start and, with those opponents, logic and statistics suggest that the goal drought surely cannot continue.

It’s getting tougher to hang on to such arguments, though. With Papiss Cisse maintaining a frightening and improbable scoring rate, it’s almost as if the power has shifted. Like the goal mojo took a train to Tyneside, leaving the weary Dutchman searching for the knack, whilst Cisse went about feasting. Double Gameweek offerings will be the next to tempt us to pull the chord on the Van Persie ejector seat: the nagging doubts are building.

Today’s harsh lesson will surely see the armband kept from Van Persie when he rolls up at Stoke. A notorious setting, Wenger won’t relish taking his men to the Britannia and the majority will expect Van Persie’s dry spell to be extended. Those who press the button prior to Gameweek will cling to the fact that the Gunners rarely enjoy their encounters with the muscular Potters who, at their best, can be formidable in front of their bellowing fans. It all points to another blank for the goalscorer supreme. I can almost see Tony Pulis, furiously waving a green flag for those now pondering disposing of Van Persie’s talents.

Personally, I’m not sure I want to take Tony’s advice: I never trust a man in a baseball cap. I’m not turning my back on Robin, not yet. Maybe I’ll sleep on it. Maybe, once Wayne Rooney has done his thing against Everton, once City have torn up Wolves – maybe then they’ll be enough to convince me that it’s time to give it up.

Right now it feels wrong. The good times are still too fresh in the mind. Even if part of me is watching my season whimper out along with Van Persie’s, he’s saved me so often, it’s almost as if I feel I owe to him to remain faithful.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I get the following team with single hit - 7(8) DGWs after these transfers with 2 FTs

Walcott > HBA, Sess > Peinaar, Valencia > VDV

    SCHWARZ

    Vermaelen SIMPSON Ridgewell/KELLY(If fit)

    PEINAAR DEMPSEY VDV HBA Siggy

    Roon CISSE

    Vorm - Rvp ridgewell/kelly Evans

    Possible transfers

    Rooney > Ade/Jelavic and Evans > BAE for -12 worth it ??

or skip sess > peinaar and do roon > jelly instead ?? for -8

Thoughts ?? Is a spurs defender must have ??

And even if they lose both blackburn and bolton have a good chance of scoring..

gahhh today and wednesday have been sooo frustrating to watch! :(. we're really not playing that well (though we played a bit better midweek). play in the final third seems lacking, finishing touch nonexistent, not creating many great chances (like madrid did for their second goal) like we usually do, and messi seems to be getting taken out of the game by defenders surroudning him and not having many good options... just hoping we can turn things around against chelsea!

Yeah they're not playing with enough purpose and intent. The used to play through teams alot better but now they play side to side to often and can't seem to penetrate teams. Messi is dropping too deep to get the ball so too often he is in areas where he can't hurt the opposition. Dani Alves is not good enough to be given that wide right role either. So wasteful with the ball against Chelsea and tonight. They miss David Villa and his injury has coincided with Pedro losing form. Puyol is getting on now and Barca rely too heavily on him in defence. They need to strengthen in the summer and stop playing Mascherano at CB week in week out.

agreed. too much side to side, not enough penetrating runs/through balls. also i dont know why iniesta played out wide against chelsea. needs to be iniesta cesc and xavi controlling the midfield and in that space where messi is dropping back

agreed about alves too. can't wait for next year with villa and afellay both back, will give us plenty more wide options! tello did alright just didn't have the finishing touch like i was saying.

what's the deal with pique? im a bit confused why he's not playing... and yes i agree they need to buy some defensive players! a left back (abidal is good but we could have better and he also seems to be out a lot) as well as another center back or two cuz puyol and pique always seem to be getting hurt. also any idea why we dont play fontas at all? just not ready for this level? and to be honest i thought mascherano had a pretty good game tonight

          Keep Aguero in my opinion.

You have Bale, not sure you need VdV too.

I got Tevez last night and I think I'm going to keep him now as I cannot really see another DGW striker other than Adebayor that I'd want in his place. But I'd rather get rid of RVP for Ade now though.

I might just leave Aguero, and play Sess at home to Bolton. 4 points saved and Sunderland might just get their act together (big ask but you never know).

Watched the Spurs game. I was impressed by VDV, should of had a goal and a couple of assists, maybe I'm a bit delusional, but I still fancy Spurs to come good. Today was always going to be a tough match where plenty of other big boys have failed.

I will probably play 7 or 8 DGW players but, to be honest with you, this DGW is looking less and less attractive by the day.

Spurs have the best fixtures but absolutely no form. I reckon Fulham, Stoke and Newcastle will probably end up coming off the best out of all the DGW teams.

I have 80% lost faith in the Spurs, be it in attack, midfield or D. I've decided against doubling up on them..

    Questions:

    - Who would you say is the best choice keeper from the DGW teams?

    - Pick two of the below to go with Dempsey and Sigurdsson..also considering that I'll have Cisse and Jelavic most probably.

    Mata. VDV. Bale. Pienaar. HBA.

    Ta very much!

I was set on Cech as well. Not very sure about Howard though. Everton without Baines on that left side.. I don't know.

Is the only reason that people don't favour Mata, the fact that he might just play one game and get a cameo in the other? He can still produce the goods IMO.

Yes, Chelsea players are now serious rotation risks.

Chelsea have 2 games and then the Cup final on 5 May so they will play Barca, QPR, Newcastle and Liverpool (FACF) in the space of 12 days.

You think Mata plays in all those games?

don't forget afellay on the bench perhaps. also even though busquets dives too much, still think he's a bit underrated. they need a cdm like him to stay back and defend when most of the rest of the whole team push up in attack

i guess but thats what happens when you play a passing game like barca. valdes lost the ball which resulted in a madrid goal super early on when they met earlier in the season, remember? thats bound to happen.

only reason im mad at him right now is he missed that shot at the end of the chelsea game!!! atrocious

Bale to Barca as Abidal replacement is what the rumours are saying..
He'd play pretty much in a similar role to Alves i think..

And @Parmtree - If im not wrong Abidal is retiring this season after his surgery..

i have three newc players already (simpson, Krul, HBA) but want Cisse.. Also need to shift walcott

So essentially i have to take a -8 to get cisse in, or go without

would you say its worth it to do say Krul, Walcott RVP to Cech Cisse Bale / VDV?

Must have DGW players in attack IMO considering form + rotation threat..

HBA, Cisse, Dempsey, one of Peinaar/Jelavic, one of Bale/VDV

So who would you pick from everton and spurs ??

also i have to say, after drogba's goal (well taken but i think he shouldda had it) and the first madrid goal today, i'm wondering if valdes needs to be replaced.... sure keepers make mistakes but that goal was poor and if we want to stay best in the world we need the best in the world between the sticks

It goes with what you said about Puyol.

Valdes has never been the greatest keeper, but usually your defence prevents all but the mildest of shots.

ive never rated him highly tbh
a lot of ronaldos goals against barca recently have been at the near post when valdes commits and he just puts it to the right and puts it into an empty net

I have no clue what to with my fpl team now. I might just suffer the Walcott injury. I originally planned on benching him and getting Adebayor instead of Rooney. Now Adebayor is a doubt too...
I made a a right balls of my ESPN team. I had two free transfers left used them. Now I have none left and have Walcott, Adebayor and Warnock in the team...
Plus no auto subs in that game unless there is a sub for the same position on the bench.

If you had a forward line of:

Van der Vaart. Ben Arfa. Dempsey. Valencia. Sigurdsson
    Jelavic. Cisse. Van Persie.

Would you bench Valencia (mcy) or RVP (sto)?
