No goals from open play in seven league starts. That’s a statistic which, a couple of months ago, would seem improbable of a player of the stature of Robin Van Persie. It looked like he’d run and run until the end of the season; that Arsenal’s skipper had successfully broken Fantasy football and made a slot in our squads his own, with the captain’s armband soldered to his bicep.

Today’s blank in the stifling 0-0 with Chelsea at the Emirates was the latest setback for those clinging to Van Persie, in the hope that he’ll recapture the stunning form which saw him reach essential status. Certainly there’s been no let up in goal threat from Arsenal’s talisman. Today, Van Persie fired in seven efforts on goal – more than any other player in the Gameweek thus far – it was his most threatening display since Gameweek 18. Reassurance in numbers form – but is it enough?

Such statistics would indicate that his army of Fantasy owners, and those who skippered him yet again, were unfortunate to pocket just a single point after the Dutchman earned his seventh booking of the season. As Arsene Wenger commented in his post-match conference, Van Persie gave everything but, like his owners, he just got nothing back.

The question is, where do we go from here? A total of 74,000 net transfers out last week, already Van Persie is being shipped by thousands. Clearly there’s a tide turning against him as patience wears thin. Although fixtures against Stoke, Norwich and West Brom would suggest that Arsenal and Van Persie still have goals left to score.

Today’s injury to Theo Walcott won’t help acquire them – Van Persie will now have to do without his supply from the right flank for the remaining matches. However, that also deprives Arsene Wenger of the option of shifting Walcott to a central role and carrying out the unthinkable act of resting his skipper – even with 50 games in the tank. While Arsenal still have something to play for, Van Persie will surely start and, with those opponents, logic and statistics suggest that the goal drought surely cannot continue.

It’s getting tougher to hang on to such arguments, though. With Papiss Cisse maintaining a frightening and improbable scoring rate, it’s almost as if the power has shifted. Like the goal mojo took a train to Tyneside, leaving the weary Dutchman searching for the knack, whilst Cisse went about feasting. Double Gameweek offerings will be the next to tempt us to pull the chord on the Van Persie ejector seat: the nagging doubts are building.

Today’s harsh lesson will surely see the armband kept from Van Persie when he rolls up at Stoke. A notorious setting, Wenger won’t relish taking his men to the Britannia and the majority will expect Van Persie’s dry spell to be extended. Those who press the button prior to Gameweek will cling to the fact that the Gunners rarely enjoy their encounters with the muscular Potters who, at their best, can be formidable in front of their bellowing fans. It all points to another blank for the goalscorer supreme. I can almost see Tony Pulis, furiously waving a green flag for those now pondering disposing of Van Persie’s talents.

Personally, I’m not sure I want to take Tony’s advice: I never trust a man in a baseball cap. I’m not turning my back on Robin, not yet. Maybe I’ll sleep on it. Maybe, once Wayne Rooney has done his thing against Everton, once City have torn up Wolves – maybe then they’ll be enough to convince me that it’s time to give it up.

Right now it feels wrong. The good times are still too fresh in the mind. Even if part of me is watching my season whimper out along with Van Persie’s, he’s saved me so often, it’s almost as if I feel I owe to him to remain faithful.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

My team (* means double GW player)
    Vorm (Hart)
Simpson *, Skrtel *, Verm (Jevans, Senderos *)
Bale *, Demps *, Siggy, Sess, Valencia
    RVP, Cisse*, Gabby
    1FT 4m in the bank.

Thinking of doing: Gabby and Sess out for VDV (pr someone else maybe)and Jellyfish for a hit. Good moves? =-4
The next hit that I am considering is bringing Cech and bench Vorm = -8
Than Walker in and Verm on the bench = -12

How far should I go? Thoughts on the proposed moves?
    Thanks,

Dont bother with Walker, unless things look better with respect to the spurs defence by the end of the week.

If Chelsea have such good fixtures then Hart to Cech at the very least.

          Personally I would do;

          Gabby + Hart ➡ Jelavic + Cech

        Hi mate!

Which defenders and midfielders are you looking at for the DGW?

        Here is my team: http://fantasy.premierleague.com/entry/1463087/history/

Not chasing anyone, just want to progress beyond 30k mark.

Have 1 FT. Was planning an 8 point or 12 point hit to bring DGW players.

        Is it worth it?

First one I would go for.
-4 for a keeps I'm not sure of.
Walker may not even get as many points as Verm so that one is nogood.

Your team looks very good for the DGW.

Condense your question to Rooney/RVP/Aguero > Cisse for a hit? I fancy it personally, I would do it.

So many factors at play here though which I don't know. Your ML situation, who your rivals have, what Rooney does tomorrow, potential injuries to come. If you're gonna do one of your strikers to Cisse, for heaven's sake wait until next weekend.

I'm ML leader atm by 70 points. One of my rivals has cisse, but he's third on about 80 points away.

I'm looking at their fixtures GW37 onwards because I think Roon/Aguero could still rip it up then whereas Newcastle's fixtures look meak.

I just wanted someone else's view on weighing this up as I know none of my rivals will have my 3 strikers all in a row

With Chelsea's rotation, Newcastle's fixtures, and Spurs Form, this double gameweek suddenly looks very unappealing.

I might captain Jelavic. Probably gonna play Baines too even if he just plays 1/0 of the games, run in is good and there aren't many alternatives that are making me think it would be worth a transfer rather than just play Kelly/Evans.

    * means DGW.

Chelsea - whole team fa cup / cl rotation risk
Liverpool - as above (less cl clearly...)
    Stoke - woeful
    Newcastle - fixtures .. ?
    Baines - hamstring

Luiz due back for the DGW according to FPL but perhaps he'll come in for Terry
Dont want to bring in a defender for dgw but none of the midfielders/strikers are really doing it for me right now

Siggy short term. Moses long term.

You are on a WC so I doubt you have room for a single gameweek player... Moses it is!

Walcott to Bale, forget the negativity on here, he has been close to scoring every week. If you prefer to not get him then VDV looked lively tonight

Without the goals and assists of Ronaldo and Messi in La Liga, Real Madrid would still be 1st and Barça would be 6th.

That stat is completely irrelevant. If Arsenal didn't have RVP where would they be? If Newcastle didn't buy Ba, where would they be?

It shows the reliance on their star players. Real Madrid are not as relient on Ronaldo for goals as Barca are for Messi.

Pity you cant look at other aspects of the game, for instance where would Liverpool be without Lucas....

What the stat implies is Barca rely way too much on Messi compared to Ronaldo..

Also barca are more of a one man team even compared to Arsenal..

        Rvp - 27/67 - 40% of AFC LEAGUE goals
        Messi 41/94 - 44%
        CR 41/104 - 38%

          Thank you KNL.

          Major thoughts:
          - Ozil's pass for that Ronaldo goal was yummy.
          - Sanchez' celebration was a tad exuberant for only an equaliser.
          - I do not rate that Tello fellow at all. Said it earlier and that miss was horrific.

School report TM could have done better ( damn you Gareth ) but, still got aguero (c) to roll, and I don't need a hit next week.

        Happy with 7 dgws me.

Also, my traded in players did me proud, so far...

        Cisse for yak
        Dempsey for Walcott.

The big test tomorrow... Aguero for Rooney 😯 ?!

I could have done Petrov for Sess/Walcott. Would still have Sess/Walcott but hopefully on the bench,

          Graham to Cisse 🙂
          Rooney to Aguero(c)..... who knows
Walcott to Pienaar - please don't get injured.
