No goals from open play in seven league starts. That’s a statistic which, a couple of months ago, would seem improbable of a player of the stature of Robin Van Persie. It looked like he’d run and run until the end of the season; that Arsenal’s skipper had successfully broken Fantasy football and made a slot in our squads his own, with the captain’s armband soldered to his bicep.

Today’s blank in the stifling 0-0 with Chelsea at the Emirates was the latest setback for those clinging to Van Persie, in the hope that he’ll recapture the stunning form which saw him reach essential status. Certainly there’s been no let up in goal threat from Arsenal’s talisman. Today, Van Persie fired in seven efforts on goal – more than any other player in the Gameweek thus far – it was his most threatening display since Gameweek 18. Reassurance in numbers form – but is it enough?

Such statistics would indicate that his army of Fantasy owners, and those who skippered him yet again, were unfortunate to pocket just a single point after the Dutchman earned his seventh booking of the season. As Arsene Wenger commented in his post-match conference, Van Persie gave everything but, like his owners, he just got nothing back.

The question is, where do we go from here? A total of 74,000 net transfers out last week, already Van Persie is being shipped by thousands. Clearly there’s a tide turning against him as patience wears thin. Although fixtures against Stoke, Norwich and West Brom would suggest that Arsenal and Van Persie still have goals left to score.

Today’s injury to Theo Walcott won’t help acquire them – Van Persie will now have to do without his supply from the right flank for the remaining matches. However, that also deprives Arsene Wenger of the option of shifting Walcott to a central role and carrying out the unthinkable act of resting his skipper – even with 50 games in the tank. While Arsenal still have something to play for, Van Persie will surely start and, with those opponents, logic and statistics suggest that the goal drought surely cannot continue.

It’s getting tougher to hang on to such arguments, though. With Papiss Cisse maintaining a frightening and improbable scoring rate, it’s almost as if the power has shifted. Like the goal mojo took a train to Tyneside, leaving the weary Dutchman searching for the knack, whilst Cisse went about feasting. Double Gameweek offerings will be the next to tempt us to pull the chord on the Van Persie ejector seat: the nagging doubts are building.

Today’s harsh lesson will surely see the armband kept from Van Persie when he rolls up at Stoke. A notorious setting, Wenger won’t relish taking his men to the Britannia and the majority will expect Van Persie’s dry spell to be extended. Those who press the button prior to Gameweek will cling to the fact that the Gunners rarely enjoy their encounters with the muscular Potters who, at their best, can be formidable in front of their bellowing fans. It all points to another blank for the goalscorer supreme. I can almost see Tony Pulis, furiously waving a green flag for those now pondering disposing of Van Persie’s talents.

Personally, I’m not sure I want to take Tony’s advice: I never trust a man in a baseball cap. I’m not turning my back on Robin, not yet. Maybe I’ll sleep on it. Maybe, once Wayne Rooney has done his thing against Everton, once City have torn up Wolves – maybe then they’ll be enough to convince me that it’s time to give it up.

Right now it feels wrong. The good times are still too fresh in the mind. Even if part of me is watching my season whimper out along with Van Persie’s, he’s saved me so often, it’s almost as if I feel I owe to him to remain faithful.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    JK's DGW Analysis - Defenders Part 2

    Fulham

Most Likely Target - Phillipe Senderos

A major target back on the January wildcards, Senderos quickly fell out of favour both for Fulham and with FPL managers. However, an injury to Stephen Kelly (who would otherwise have taken this spot) saw Aaron Hughes shifted tho right-back vs Wigan, with Senderos coming into the heart of the defence. He rewarded those brave enough to play him with a goal. With a price tag of 4.1 and a chance that he may now start both games Senderos could see more investment.

Alternative Option - John Arne Riise

Although he has not delivered the returns many expected via his trademark thunderbolt Free-kicks, Riise has, nevertheless, offered decent reward to his owners, delivering 9 clean sheets and 4 assists including 2 in his last 3. Priced at 5.7 million he offers much greater assurance of a start than Senderos does and could see his ownership soar.

Doosra Differential Punt - Brede Hangeland

Although he has failed to net this term, after doing so 6 times last time out, Hangeland's height still makes him a force to be reckoned with in opposition penalty areas, and he must surely find the net soon. Captain when Danny Murphy is not in the side, Hangeland is one of the first names on the Fulham team-sheet. It is however, his lack of goals, for that 6 million price tag that is off-putting to many. However, if you a brave enough to punt on him and if the Norweigan can rediscover that scoring touch, you cold have a serious points machine on your hands.

    Liverpool

Moat likely target - Martin Skrtel

The most nailed on of all Liverpool defenders, Skrtel simply does not miss games. 2 goals and assist show he offers some attacking reward, and he has picked up 7 bonus points. However, Liverpool's recent record will be off-putting to many as clean sheets have all but disappeared. That being said, if you want a Pool defender for DGW, but are worried about rotation, then Skrtel is the man for you

    Alternative option - Jose Enrique

Though his returns have dried up from his early season form, Enrique also represents a decent bet for Liverpool defence. although recent weeks have shown him to be a rotation risk. His continued crosses continue to be spurned by Luis Suarez and this is further off-putting. However, a 5.4 price-tag coupled with a hope of a return to defensive stability and a desire for attacking returns could see Enrique investment soar

Doosra Differential Punt - Daniel Agger

Perhaps the clue that held the Liverpool defence together, Agger's absence in the last few weeks has been attributed as major cause of Liverpool's defensive decline. Although his return has yet to steady the ship he has often been stuck at left-back. A move centrally may see an improvement for Liverpool, and he has 2 assists in 2 games since his return, marking him out as a significant attacking threat. But with his recent injury record, could he be rotated for 1 game? It is risk his owners may have to take.

    Chelsea

Most Likely Target - Cary Cahill

Priced at just 5.5 and having started 9 of the last 10 games, Cahill appears to won a regular spot for Premier League games. But with an FA Cup final and possible Champions Leageu final to come, will Cahill play both games, or will he switch with David Luiz for one. This is a question any owners and potential owners will be asking themselves. But his price and apparent goal threat makes him a strong candidate for investment.

    Alternative Option - John Terry

Perhaps the only safe bet in the Chelsea line-up the skipper makes the side tick and seems certain to play both games, given he was not rested ahead of either the FA Cup or Champions League semi-finals. 4 goals this season show that he remains an attacking threat, whilst a total of 14 bonuses show his defensive qualities do not go unrewarded. But 2 things may prohibit ownership. Firstly is his 7.4 million price tag. Only the injured Leighton Baines and Nemanja Vidic cost more. Secondly, is simply the moral of owning John Terry. This you must deal with yourself. Let's also throw in the fact Chelsea visit Anfield in GW37, likely on the Wednesday after the 2 sides meet in the cup final, is Terry playable in GW37?

Doosra Differential Punt - Ryan Bertrand

Has forced his way into this spot by virtue of having started all of Chelsea's last 3 league games, with Cashley seemingly being saved for the cup matches. Priced at just 4.4, if Bertrand plays both games in the DGW he could deliver a nice haul, though he has just 1 clean sheet in those 2 games. But, with starts looking likely, this is a punt that could pay off handsomely.

        not helping myself much though.

I need a DGW defender to replace Kolarov

Was gonna be Baines, but he's out

Then it was gonna Kaboul, but he might be out and Spurs look dodgy at the back

Cahill is not nailed on for 2 games, Stoke are Stoke, have Santon, will have Howard.

        I hate this DGW

Good post as usual JK. Are you a member btw?
Just went to look at Hangeland to see if he's been putting in the efforts but not reaping the rewards and the answer seems to be sort of.
He's in the upper mid bracket for attempts on goal (alongside the likes of Ashley Williams and Collocini). Riise however is top for attempts albeit 7th for attempts on target.

Well he's younger and should be fitter than Terry and Ivanovic won't be back for the first game so that leaves a choice of Terry, Cahill and Luiz (if he is even fit).

I think Terry could be rested for the second game bearing in mind the Cup final and I think that RDM will go with Luiz and Cahill at CB.

      Sexy.

I would have Aguero over Ade even if he was fit, especially when you have Bale AND VDV.

Cheer James. Yeah im considering that myself. I currently have Aguero / Cisse / Ade as my front three and want Jelavic, origionally I planned on Aguero out for him but loosing Ade could be an idea. It just feel wrong taking a DGW striker out, however bad their form is? Aguero would be my GW37 transfer anyway but for Cisse so id only not have him for this GW. What do you think?
