No goals from open play in seven league starts. That’s a statistic which, a couple of months ago, would seem improbable of a player of the stature of Robin Van Persie. It looked like he’d run and run until the end of the season; that Arsenal’s skipper had successfully broken Fantasy football and made a slot in our squads his own, with the captain’s armband soldered to his bicep.

Today’s blank in the stifling 0-0 with Chelsea at the Emirates was the latest setback for those clinging to Van Persie, in the hope that he’ll recapture the stunning form which saw him reach essential status. Certainly there’s been no let up in goal threat from Arsenal’s talisman. Today, Van Persie fired in seven efforts on goal – more than any other player in the Gameweek thus far – it was his most threatening display since Gameweek 18. Reassurance in numbers form – but is it enough?

Such statistics would indicate that his army of Fantasy owners, and those who skippered him yet again, were unfortunate to pocket just a single point after the Dutchman earned his seventh booking of the season. As Arsene Wenger commented in his post-match conference, Van Persie gave everything but, like his owners, he just got nothing back.

The question is, where do we go from here? A total of 74,000 net transfers out last week, already Van Persie is being shipped by thousands. Clearly there’s a tide turning against him as patience wears thin. Although fixtures against Stoke, Norwich and West Brom would suggest that Arsenal and Van Persie still have goals left to score.

Today’s injury to Theo Walcott won’t help acquire them – Van Persie will now have to do without his supply from the right flank for the remaining matches. However, that also deprives Arsene Wenger of the option of shifting Walcott to a central role and carrying out the unthinkable act of resting his skipper – even with 50 games in the tank. While Arsenal still have something to play for, Van Persie will surely start and, with those opponents, logic and statistics suggest that the goal drought surely cannot continue.

It’s getting tougher to hang on to such arguments, though. With Papiss Cisse maintaining a frightening and improbable scoring rate, it’s almost as if the power has shifted. Like the goal mojo took a train to Tyneside, leaving the weary Dutchman searching for the knack, whilst Cisse went about feasting. Double Gameweek offerings will be the next to tempt us to pull the chord on the Van Persie ejector seat: the nagging doubts are building.

Today’s harsh lesson will surely see the armband kept from Van Persie when he rolls up at Stoke. A notorious setting, Wenger won’t relish taking his men to the Britannia and the majority will expect Van Persie’s dry spell to be extended. Those who press the button prior to Gameweek will cling to the fact that the Gunners rarely enjoy their encounters with the muscular Potters who, at their best, can be formidable in front of their bellowing fans. It all points to another blank for the goalscorer supreme. I can almost see Tony Pulis, furiously waving a green flag for those now pondering disposing of Van Persie’s talents.

Personally, I’m not sure I want to take Tony’s advice: I never trust a man in a baseball cap. I’m not turning my back on Robin, not yet. Maybe I’ll sleep on it. Maybe, once Wayne Rooney has done his thing against Everton, once City have torn up Wolves – maybe then they’ll be enough to convince me that it’s time to give it up.

Right now it feels wrong. The good times are still too fresh in the mind. Even if part of me is watching my season whimper out along with Van Persie’s, he’s saved me so often, it’s almost as if I feel I owe to him to remain faithful.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I think hit is not a smart move if u have Swansea players,Sunderland defender,ManU/City forward.

1)Swansea against already relegated Wolves(probably)-Worth DGW points.I will play Siggy/Caulker
2)City & Utd-Clash of the season. So,lots of attacking points there.Roo/Tevez/Valencia(if Baines is not fit)
3)Sunderland-Defensively strong. So,Clean Sheet is almost sure.Turner to play

I will go to DGW without any hit with 5(6 if Baines plays)

      My Most likely Gw36 XI:

      Krul*

      Caulker Turner Baines/Chelsea def*

      Dempsey* Pienaar* Siggy Valencia/VDV

      Roo Tevez Cisse*

At the announcement of DGW,I planned for 8.But happy with the team now.All DGWers are not worth it.

QUALITY over QUANTITY------My Motto for GW36!!!

They are playing against the team who are fighting for their life. Not as easy as what we thought at the first look of these fixtures.

      Instead,I will look for BArfa/Cabaye/Mata/Kalou/Pienaar/Osman.

In season 1 for me, I had a dead team for 8 GWs. FPL was a fun 2nd game. Used my WC in a DGW & went ballistic for the rest of the season. Mr Ronaldo, VDS, Vidic, Lampard, Ireland & Baines were amongst my favs that season. Wish I had a screenshot of that season. 🙁

All a learning curve my son.

I will be looking for a little discussion with you nearer next week TM.

Was going to have 7dgw, no hit next week but bring in ade, looked like his crocked and spurs smell.

So maybe jelly and ay take a hit on mata, lamps or arfa. But the latter gives me 3 new, with horrid games left. No somewhere I want to be...

We may have to use another forum to communicate like the old school days. 😉
Probably the biggest week in FPL coming up and captains choice will be a major factor.

                  True.

I don't use total fpl much now as the chat don't work on my I.pad.

I'll dig the laptop out, and maybe use private messge chat on there close to Friday?

Reckon I'll break through the 1k rank mark this week?

Currently in 1,446th with 2,020 points and I have Kompany, JEvans, Skrtel, Valencia & Rooney to play (and probably 4 BPs for Cisse). 1,000th is currently on 2,031 points, so 11 points ahead of me....

Had a look at my team scores and was horrified to see that my late change to Cisse (c) didn't go through.

It was 1125 BST yesterday when I made that change, I must have not clicked on the confirm button 🙁

Roon (c) and RVP (vc) was not what I wanted.

My smugness has dissolved and I'm now going to be sweating on SAF putting Roon on the pitch.

They've been rested yesterday due to the Tuesday game coming up. But I think if RDM were to choose between NEW & the FA Cup Final, he should choose NEW.

I think realistically Chelsea are out of the battle for 4th place now, so I'm inclined to leave them alone. FA Cup final and CL semi should, and probably will, take priority.

"I think realistically Chelsea are out of the battle for 4th place now"

I don't know how you say that.

If we beat Newcastle, we go ahead of them in GD. Consider the fixtures they have - wig che MCY eve. I see a max of 5 points there. All odds are stacked against them. But they have form.

Then, look at Spurs. We're just one point behind them. And with the form they're in, I'm thinking they're favorites to go 6th.

With our fixtures and decent form, I really think we can get 3 wins out of the next 4.

I think you'd still be 1 point behind NEW 'IF' you beat them, and I see a draw in that game given their form and your schedule. There's a chance you'll make it, but I think you'll need to win all 4 to do so.

Would be hilarious if you won the CL and Spurs came 4th and didn't make the CL again.... 😉

Lads - would appreciate your feedback on this WC draft:

    Cech (Bog)
    JT Hibbert Huth (Verm Evans)
    VDV Bale Pienaar Sig (Moses)
    Jellyfish Ade Cisse
    Bank 7.8

    1) I'm leaving enough cash in the bank to upgrade Ade/Cisse to RVP/Roo/Kun in the last 2 weeks (depending on the title race/race for Europe).

    2) I'm thinking there's no place for Dempsey or Barfa in that midfield. My deduction is purely based on fixtures, but Pienaar & Sig are in good form too!

    Thoughts?

Looks good. I think I'd use some of that cash to upgrade Hibbert -> Jags as he at least offers some goal and BP threat. Also, do you reckon Cahill has cemented the CB role? He's looked very decent the last few weeks. If so, I'd get him over an EVE defender. I'd also want Dempsey in there. He is the King of DGWs and then he has an out of form Sunderland at home in GW37.

The thing is Jags was rested for the FA Cup final for whatever weird reason.

Reg Cahill, agreed. I'll definitely get him if Luiz is confirmed to be out for longer. But I reckon Luiz might return during the DGWs.

Dempsey has pretty tough fixtures though. Pretty much a choice between him & Pienaar/Sig/Bale. What dya think? I might just stick him in to be safe. Don't want to miss out on his hauls.

        Cheers bud. 🙂

I think Jags will play every game from now on in. He's had his rest and they have no other comps to play in. He probably needs some game time to secure a place in the squad for the Euros too. Cahill is mighty tempting. I think if we get news on Luiz missing both games in GW36 then I'll take a hit to play him over Turner.

I think Dempsey's fixtures in the DGW aren't all that bad given that LIV have the FA cup final as a distraction, plus I like his GW37 fixture. Bale is a must for me despite his form. Siggy only has a good GW36, so if on a WC I'd consider losing him.

          Any thoughts on my plan?

          GW36: Sess & Rooney -> VDV & Ade
          GW37: Skrtel -> Verm
          GW38: Dempsey -> Silva

I would not have Bale if I were where you are. Also believe that Vermaelen is not enough Arsenal - bearing in mind that you will only have two more free transfers. Don't much lie your goalies - but that's just me.

          Thanks Dr Doos.

Arsenal aren't in a good shape at the moment. I don't even know if RVP is required for NOR without Walcott there to supply. I think I'll stick with their in-form striker for the moment - the Verminator!!!!!!!

About the GKs, it's basically Cech. He'll start all the games until the end.

Maybe Schevcenko (sp!), considering his career before coming over.
