Among the eight teams to play twice during Gameweek 36, Stoke are by far the least prolific in terms of attacking potential. Having netted just 32 times thus far, Tony Pulis’ side sit firmly at the foot of the “Goals Scored” table with four matches left to play.

It is a statistic that will hardly fill Fantasy managers with confidence as they eye up the Potters ahead of the upcoming double Gameweek, but a closer look at Stoke’s home and away record shows there is still hope among their red and white striped ranks.

The Prospects

Home clashes during Gameweek 36, against an Arsenal team looking to secure third spot and a resurgent Everton, are not the easiest games on paper. The key aspect here, though, is not the opposition but the fact that Pulis’ side play both their games at the Britannia. Stoke’s poor goal tally can largely be put down to their woeful away record – of their 32 goals, 21 have been in front of their home fans, as have six of their nine clean sheets.

Arsenal are also enduring something of a slump, giving investors in Stoke’s ranks further hope. Arsene Wenger’s side have won just two of their last five matches and in Gameweek 35 were left frustrated during a 0-0 draw against a patched up Chelsea team with one eye on this week’s Champions League semi-final clash with Barcelona. With Robin Van Persie scoring only once in his last seven, hopes of a clean sheet for Stoke against the Gunners are perhaps better than previously anticipated, although their strikers may face a tough time – Arsenal have returned five clean sheets in their last seven matches.

Stoke defenders face a far sterner test against Everton, who are quite simply rampant in front of goal right now, scoring 14 in their last five matches. During this recent run, the Toffees have also managed to keep three clean sheets but have shipped six goals, giving the Potters’ attackers a sliver of hope.

The Likely Lads

With nine goals to his name thus far, the 6.1 priced Peter Crouch is Stoke’s main attacking threat. Five of those have come at home, including his goal of the season strike against Manchester City in Gameweek 30. With four assists and 14 bonus points this season he offers the chance of further points over the two games – it’s also worth noting that Crouch has scored in three of his last four at the Britannia.

Elsewhere in midfield, Stoke’s tricky wingers – Matthew Etherington and Jermaine Pennant, with six assists each, are also worth considering. Etherington, at 6.5, with three goals and 15 bonus points, is perhaps the more consistent of the pair, though Pennant, who is priced at 5.6, has been in decent form of late, providing an assist in three of his last four appearances. If he shake off the virus that forced him to remain on the bench for last week’s trip to Newcastle, he could produce.

Stoke’s defence is perhaps where the shrewdest Fantasy managers will cast their gaze and, in particular, the attacking strength offered by 5.6 priced Robert Huth. The German has been in solid form of late, scoring in two of his last three games and also picking up four bonus, for an average of seven points per game – all this without a clean sheet in that run of matches. Ryan Shawcross, who has a 5.3 price tag, is another to consider. The Potters’ skipper seems more likely to earn bonus points – he has 13 compared to Huth’s seven.

Among Premier League goalkeepers, the risk of rotation perhaps hangs heaviest over Stoke’s. Currently Asmir Begovic is the main contender but Thomas Sorenson is always looming in the wings, with Tony Pulis having a track record of showing no mercy at switching his options between the posts if the form drops. Despite this threat, the 4.5m priced Begovic, with 81 points and five bonus points remains the best Stoke purchase between the sticks. The fact that the Bosnian has started the last nine offers a little more confidence for his Fantasy suitors.

Cheeky Punt

There was a time earlier this season when Stoke’s penalty-taking forward Jon Walters was an almost essential pick, due to his listing in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) as a midfielder. The Irishman has fallen by the wayside over the last few months, though – with the last of his five goals coming in Gameweek 19, it’s something of an understatement to say Walters is woefully out of form. Despite this, his spot kick duties plus his five assists, 10 bonus points and 6.0 price tag cannot be completely dismissed.

Bringing in Jelavic for Rooney I will have

    KRUL

    SIMPSON, CAHILL, Verm (McAuley Evans)

BALE, DEMPSEY, PETROV McClean or Valencia

    JELAVIC, CISSE, rvp.

Have one more freebie and a ton of cash. Should I bring in Jags for McAuley giving me three dgw defenders and then choose between Verm and McClean as 11th man or bring in Pienaar for McClean?

    Other options?

Change Howard, Terry, Cahill and Lampard to Cech, Huth, Walker and Pienaar maybe? Lots of cash tied up in players who are serious rotation risks - switching Howard to Cech gives you a more stable route into the Chelsea defence. Also, I would get rid of Ade, probably for RVP (if the funds will allow). Look at GW's 37 & 38 as well

That is the question. Bales high and growing ownership means that he's probably your best option if leading. VDV if your chasing, IMO.

Only two guys out there isn't both leading and chasing, one of whom is sitting on 2204 points. (The other one has surely long since given up). Anyway, I find it encouraging that our current overall leader was 257K rank last year, proof that anybody can rise to top with good in-season choices and a bit of luck.

Was going to do Val > Bale, but then I thought I want to keep Val for 37 (as I have no Piggy). So then I chose Sessegnon > Bale. Despite being home to Bolton, Sunderland are not attacking. Can see a Trotters CS actually!

Now I am going to do VDV as I think he's a better shout for points than Bale. What do you all think about that?

I doubt rooney will hit double figures away to city but i could be wrong.
I really expect swansea to keep a clean sheet at home to a terrible relegated wolves.
I HIGHLY doubt young will get much more than 6 points...

Same logic applies to Fulham and Pog though!

It is just that you are spreading the potential risk of a bad week from 1 team to 2. In any case go with your gut.

PS out of curiosity, who is more likely to earn BPS?

PPS also a consideration is your GW37 team. Eve at home to wolves seems tasty!

Balotelli leads rioting fans onto field, finds pitchfork somewhere and chases Young the length of the field. Evans and Jones commit awkward fouls on him as he is nearing in on Young. Epidemic of illnesses amongst referees had left Mark Clattenburg as only healthy referee. He tries to give yellow cards to all of the crowd on the pitch. Somehow in chaos, Nani ends up with ball and blasts a 40-yard shot into row zed, despite Joe Hart being nowhere near the goalmouth. Hart, meanwhile is upfield, pummeling DeGea for having the nerve to call himself a goalkeeper without having the "gravitas" required for the position.

      Your turn...

Potentially. Sorry for lack of specificity. I think both could produce well. You bringing them in for single-game-week players, I'd guess. This time of year is time to go for it or go home, though. If you are chasing somebody, I'd say they are reasonable, but don't know who else you already have.

I totally support dropping valencia. He hasn't produced but once in a big match this year. Sessegnon good candidate to drop as well and will let you differentiate from opponent. Sunderland sputtering and they only have one match this week (and tough opponents the following two weeks)

I can't help thinking I'm being too cautious this week by taking no point hits, expecially with 5.4m in the bank. Are there any players out there worth bringing in for a hit this week?

    DEMPSEY, BALE, VDV, Siggy

I think it's a great team! I wish I had a team that good. No need for any hits imo.

You have most bases covered there and potential for getting Roon back next wk too.

Cheers Flynn, I'm top of my main league by 27 points so no need to do anything drastic. Was thinking some CHE coverage would be nice - perhaps Caulker -> Terry or Siggy -> Lampard/Mata for a hit, but with their involvement in the cups it perhaps isn't worth a hit. Also, getting Rooney back in GW37 could be worth more.

I'm eagerly awaiting concrete news on this as well. Surely there will be a paper report or something like that soon. I suspect 'Arry will suppress the developments as much as possible regardless, citing a "Hamstring injury" to deter probing questions. It will be all kept under wraps imo so I'm not sure we will find out before this weekends games.

Minor tweeks perhaps - don't see any NEW cleanies in their double, so perhaps Jags or Cahill? They offer decent attacking threat and have better fixtures imo.

Not sure though, I wouldn't much fancy him to get more than 2 points at the Bridge and then it comes down to Wigan away or Gylfi's Wolves at home where the latter could easily grab 10 points.

I got rid of Aguero and Rooney this week as I prefer RVP's chances over the next 3 and would've lost too much value. Plan is to bring Rooney back next week or wait and bring Aguero back the week afterward, depending on how the Manc derby goes.

Is it mad to consider bringing in VDV if I already have Bale & Ade?
Mata rotation is a real dampener! Plan to have Dempsey too.

Double followed by Villa looks good on paper. Would definitely pick him ahead of Mata.

Even with the coverage. So it's basically...

        VDV & Jelly -4
        or Osman & Aguero?

You should wait for more Adebayor news which could end any dilemma. Why not Dempsey instead of VDV?
I presume you're getting rid of Walcott yeah

I plan to get Dempsey for Walcott correct.
            So the VDV move is essentially a -8. & osman a -4.

Will definately wait. Just didn't want to go in too Spurs heavy with the form they are in, but just don't see a better option.

So which of the Stokehampton players do you happen to have in your teams for the DGW?

I have BEGOVIC myself, which I took in around gw30 as I had nothing better to do, and Lindegard rotting on my bench.

Who is your other keeper Gaz? I have Vorm & am tempted to play him at home v Wolves.
