Among the eight teams to play twice during Gameweek 36, Stoke are by far the least prolific in terms of attacking potential. Having netted just 32 times thus far, Tony Pulis’ side sit firmly at the foot of the “Goals Scored” table with four matches left to play.

It is a statistic that will hardly fill Fantasy managers with confidence as they eye up the Potters ahead of the upcoming double Gameweek, but a closer look at Stoke’s home and away record shows there is still hope among their red and white striped ranks.

The Prospects

Home clashes during Gameweek 36, against an Arsenal team looking to secure third spot and a resurgent Everton, are not the easiest games on paper. The key aspect here, though, is not the opposition but the fact that Pulis’ side play both their games at the Britannia. Stoke’s poor goal tally can largely be put down to their woeful away record – of their 32 goals, 21 have been in front of their home fans, as have six of their nine clean sheets.

Arsenal are also enduring something of a slump, giving investors in Stoke’s ranks further hope. Arsene Wenger’s side have won just two of their last five matches and in Gameweek 35 were left frustrated during a 0-0 draw against a patched up Chelsea team with one eye on this week’s Champions League semi-final clash with Barcelona. With Robin Van Persie scoring only once in his last seven, hopes of a clean sheet for Stoke against the Gunners are perhaps better than previously anticipated, although their strikers may face a tough time – Arsenal have returned five clean sheets in their last seven matches.

Stoke defenders face a far sterner test against Everton, who are quite simply rampant in front of goal right now, scoring 14 in their last five matches. During this recent run, the Toffees have also managed to keep three clean sheets but have shipped six goals, giving the Potters’ attackers a sliver of hope.

The Likely Lads

With nine goals to his name thus far, the 6.1 priced Peter Crouch is Stoke’s main attacking threat. Five of those have come at home, including his goal of the season strike against Manchester City in Gameweek 30. With four assists and 14 bonus points this season he offers the chance of further points over the two games – it’s also worth noting that Crouch has scored in three of his last four at the Britannia.

Elsewhere in midfield, Stoke’s tricky wingers – Matthew Etherington and Jermaine Pennant, with six assists each, are also worth considering. Etherington, at 6.5, with three goals and 15 bonus points, is perhaps the more consistent of the pair, though Pennant, who is priced at 5.6, has been in decent form of late, providing an assist in three of his last four appearances. If he shake off the virus that forced him to remain on the bench for last week’s trip to Newcastle, he could produce.

Stoke’s defence is perhaps where the shrewdest Fantasy managers will cast their gaze and, in particular, the attacking strength offered by 5.6 priced Robert Huth. The German has been in solid form of late, scoring in two of his last three games and also picking up four bonus, for an average of seven points per game – all this without a clean sheet in that run of matches. Ryan Shawcross, who has a 5.3 price tag, is another to consider. The Potters’ skipper seems more likely to earn bonus points – he has 13 compared to Huth’s seven.

Among Premier League goalkeepers, the risk of rotation perhaps hangs heaviest over Stoke’s. Currently Asmir Begovic is the main contender but Thomas Sorenson is always looming in the wings, with Tony Pulis having a track record of showing no mercy at switching his options between the posts if the form drops. Despite this threat, the 4.5m priced Begovic, with 81 points and five bonus points remains the best Stoke purchase between the sticks. The fact that the Bosnian has started the last nine offers a little more confidence for his Fantasy suitors.

Cheeky Punt

There was a time earlier this season when Stoke’s penalty-taking forward Jon Walters was an almost essential pick, due to his listing in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) as a midfielder. The Irishman has fallen by the wayside over the last few months, though – with the last of his five goals coming in Gameweek 19, it’s something of an understatement to say Walters is woefully out of form. Despite this, his spot kick duties plus his five assists, 10 bonus points and 6.0 price tag cannot be completely dismissed.

Really peed off with Spurs form going into this DGW. Really wanted to load up on Spurs (already have 3 Newc + Demp) and hopefully catch up the 30 point lead on my mini-league leader. I've done really well to claw him back to 30pts (was 70pts a month or so ago) but I'm really struggling this week.

    Krul (Migs)
    Enrique Simp Caulker
    Demp Siggy Valencia *Walcott
    P Cisse RVP Tevez

    Bench: McClean Komp Evans

    2FT. Bank: 2.4

Obviously Walcott needs to go sharpish. I'm thinking for Bale or VDV but I'm not sure which other moves to make. I'm happy to take a 4pter this week to maximise scoring opportunities in the DGW but I'll be damned if i know who to buy.

Any ideas you beautiful dead zoners?

Jelavic, Pienaar, Hibbert, HBA (remove Simpson), BAE are all midly tempting

what summer moves do you think teams should make? here are a few of my thoughts:

    spurs:
higuain if not then berbatov. if not him then hernandez/cisse/a city striker. also any idea why dos santos doesn't get virtually any game time?
a winger to play in case bale or lennon get hurt so vdv doesn't have to play on the wing. sturrige maybe?

    arsenal:
    dempsey and di maria

    newcastle:
mostly just quality depth, especially when they lose several key players for ACON next year
maybe one big signing but who would that be?

    chelsea:
    ?

    liverpool:
    new squad?

    barca:
really need a quality cb and a quality left back. better keeper would be nice but realistically not gunna happen. neymar would also be nice, a bit overrated but i think he'd fit in well and take some attention away from messi. could be south american strike force of messi sanchez neymar 😉 but that would mean leaving villa out....

Man Utd desperately need to sign at least one decent CM. It's like Deja Vu all over again every year though since Roy Keane left donkeys years ago.

Surely he must sign one this year though.............

Realistically speaking (have plenty of names on my dream shopping list) I think Tiote and/or Eden Hazard would be great signings for us.

Really hope Scholes signs for another year, to be used fleetingly of course.

Spurs: I can see Berbatov going back to Spurs especially as the Ade deal seems to be lost. They do currently have Pienaar in the books to cover wing.

Arsenal: I fully agree but I think Hazard too is an option they are looking at

Newcastle: I'm sure they will pick up another obscure gem who will come to prominence next season.

Chelsea: A reliable striker is needed to give competition for Torres. There will be a lot of selling as well I suspect

Liverpool: They will get more rubbish fringe players. Drenthe seems to be an option for them

ManU: Another striker would be needed to replace the likes of Berba, Owen and Mechada who should all be let go. A CM such as Di Maria, Cabaye or Hazard.

yeahh that would be good for them. ade has been good but i think they need someone like berb or higauin like i said. ohh right i almost forgot. i can't recall, how much did he fill in if lennon or bale were out?

ohh right he could be good too though idk cuz i haven't seen him play... think at least 2 of him di maria and dempsey should be purchased if they want to challenge for the top or at least second

haha yeahh probably right. one or two players like that and some added depth and i think they could stay top 5 or so

i think torres needs to be sold! might as well cut their losses now and get some money back for him and bring in someone else. what about a loan for ade? haha. maybe if they could snag ba from newcastle?

haha probably right. what place finish do you expect for them this year? and what about next year?

you think they really need another striker when hernadez hasn't played a ton this year... i think their 3 strikers are pretty good for them. and yeahh a cm is needed too. don't you think nani valencia and young is enough wingers? surely they don't need di maria as well!? what about kaka though? think he could do well for united? would be an interesting signing i've gotta say

Regarding United its fair enough, I though Di Maria could play CM. Hazard would be a great option for United in the middle though. Rooney, Hernandez and Welbeck are the 3 main strikers for United. I do feel they need a viable 4th option though in case of injuries etc.

Liverpool will finish 8th this year and I doubt there will be much of an improvement by next season.

Torres probably should be sold but I reckon after the huge investment they will give him another chance.

he probably could but he does quite well out wide and i doubt united would look at him. if they looked at madrid they'd go for ozil or kaka. ozil would be tough to pry away though. i guess you're right but who would they bring in? its silly to spend much on a 4th string foward...

8th? maybe, could see them dropping even more though. and id agree with that.

depends who the manager ends up being probably. but a year and a half and how many goals has he scored? single digits right? surely theres no point in giving him yet another chance after this much time. how much could he sell for? 10 mil? 15 mil?

In terms of Torres the excuse has always been the team is still in transition. When they do get the right players together you would expect Torres to perform better. That's why I'm sure he will get another year with an array of new Chelsea signings.

In terms of a 4th forward it could be a young lad perhaps, maybe an academy graduate perhaps. Ozil is also a good option for a United CM. There are plenty around and I'm sure Fergie will buy the right one.

if you really wants someone else go for howard (away to wolves), friedel (away to villa), west brom keeper idk who that is... (away to bolton) or schwarzer (home to sunderland)

none of those are that cheap though and all besides west brom keeper have dgw so maybe avoid cech if you haven't already gotten him in and get one of the other players

So I am going to be on New Zealand's national news tonight having just done an interview about the pitfalls of buying a second hand car through a dealership compared to a private seller. I have never even owned a car before! I hardly think my automobile opinions should be put forward to the whole country!

Perhaps they should have interviewed me regarding Fantasy Football instead, surely my rank won't disqualify me from expressing my scouting knowledge 😉

I'll keep an eye out for you...

I recently went second-hand car hunting around Auckland. Found one dealership, walked around for about 10 minutes, checking out the cars, no sign of the owner or a salesman... finally grew impatient and stepped into the hut at the end of the forecourt to find someone...

...the owner was asleep on a couch, wearing cowboy boots.

      Says it all.

haha, yeah I talked about how with dealerships you don't really know what you'll get especially as they aren't liable for anything. In contrast private sellers are normally fairly honest about the state of the car. I will be the guy in the white shirt (assuming they interview other people as well)

i'm not saying arsenal can win this game, especially against a physical side as stoke. but i believe stoke will concede in both games. they already safe from relegation, but arsenal is still fighting for the champions league spot. just like TM said, by taking huth in you are relying on his attacking potential instead of hoping for clean sheet. the same goes for everton, they just score 4 goals at OT, so surely they can score at britannia as well. everton beat swansea 2-0 last time at liberty stadium, where vorm and co. usually keep a clean sheet

Fair enough. Huth gives you attacking presence at least. Not sure he will reached the 5 to break even but you can still play him in the last 2 GWs.

Heres the team as of now (-4):

    Vorm
    Caulker-Verm-WILLIAMSON
    BALE-DEMPS-BARFA-Siggy
    Rvp-CISSE-JELAVIC

Should i take another -4 hit to bring in VDV for Valencia and bench RVP this week?

Vorm Williamson and RVP is the only difference between our teams.

I'm sticking with Valencia, want for 37. I'm captaining Bale to give myself some peace of mind if Tottenham do turn their form around... They certainly have the fixtures to do it

I say nay - I'm umming and ahhing over Spurs cover, tired of the lack of end product from Bale and VDV hardly in form, plus I'd be surprised if he'd play 2x90 minutes in a matter of days...

    Dempsey Val Bale Barfa (Andrews)

    RVP Aguero Ade

    So options are:

A: Walters/Osman for Andrews (-4 can't afford Pienarr) Bench Val
B: VDV & Jelly for Aguero & Andrews (-8) Bench Val
    C: Something diff?

    Cech
    Jagielka, Cahill, Vermaelen (Evans, Caulker)
    Bale, VDV, Demspey, Pienaar, (Siggy)
    Cisse, Rooney, Jelavic

Not sure if its worth having Bale and VDV, might make one Lamps or Mata depending on how Chelsea they go againt Barca.

Also not sure about my defence.

Ive got plenty in the bank to get RvP back in after this week.

    Morning deadzone.

Ha. I thought it was a bit quiet on here. I've been posting on the previous post for the last half hour!!

For any arsenal fans on their (Acqua, Jins, whoever else), I’ve been getting into listening to the tuesday club podcast from alan davies. Great stuff, even for a non gooner. One recurring theme seems to be that Wilshere is your best player. That got me thinking, what an incredible job you’s have done to be where you are, considering that your defence has been decimated for most of the season as well, and you literally only have one striker. With wilshere back, RVP staying? and a few new signings, is it possible for you to challenge for the title next year? Could you list you ideal starting 11 for next season, including the positions that you think will be strengthened. This will help me to judge what we need to do in the summer to compete. Cheers

I always use the 1 in 2 games as a gauge for a quality forward for a top team. I guess a lot depends on how many games he has played out wide, and how many as a forward. At international level he has almost scored 1 in 2, but how many of those were against the likes of San Marino? I remember him scoring 5 against somebody rubbish once!!

yeahh its usually a pretty good gauge. for club he's got 1 every 2.5 about which isnt bad. and if you look at his last two seasons for club he has 14 in 34 two years ago and 17 in 28 this year

I just watched saturdays MOTD, and scouted one of our potential summer signings. Junior Hoilett. He could fit perfectly into our new formation, on either the right or left side of the front 3. He would be cheap (out of contract, but would have to pay something due to his age), so Ashley’s favourite type of signing. Would only be as cover, but if we get into the champions league, then i don’t think that he would mind that, as he would get plenty of opportunities. What do yous reckon?

Yeah. If it comes down to wages against Man Utd, City, or Chelsea. Then we will lose out, I think we can compete in general with spurs and arsenal (although they will pay more for an absolute superstar like RVP or Modric). Can't see man utd or city going in for him. Chelsea maybe.

the more i look at football finances the more it looks like this:

someone buys a football club, then they sell it. so they never make any money or spend a penny. the fans pay for everything (including through tv rights).

so yeah, i bet junior hoillet is ashley's favourite type of signing. The free one

The way I see it is if you want to sell one of Rvp/rooney then it needs to be for only 1 game since in gw 37 you need both.

So ask yourself which one of the two(rvp/rooney) you want to play in gw 36.

      gw 36:Eg Cisse/Jelly + one of rvp/rooney
      gw 37: Jelly/rvp/rooney(sell Cisse)

Why do I feel so stumped by this dgw? Done Walcott -> Bale but not sure what else to do....

    Currently:
    KRUL
    SIMPSON turner verm (komp evans)
    DEMPSEY BALE Siggy Sess (valencia)
    CISSE rooney rvp

1 FT left, and willing to do an extra if necessary. But what - Jelavic would mean getting rid of Rooney or RVP (and I'd want RVP for 37, ugh) Hmmm.....

    Any ideas for me, deadzoners?

Wait for more new on the Pienaar warrent of arrest. If he iscleared to play then get gim in and keep both rvp/rooney. Most prob what I'm doing. Or just sell one of rvp/rooney and then get them back in for Cisse in gw 37.

Big Q for me is who to play between rvp/rooney in gw 36 if I keep both.

App his Aston martin was caught speeding twice in Oct 2011 in a 11 day period. He failed to complete a form re the driver.

not sure if it's in any way serious enough to prevent him from playing in DGW.

Is Pienaar that great though? I keep asking myself if he's the kind of player I'd want if it weren't a dgw. I want to avoid bringing in people who mess up my squad. I went down that route with Osman in January....

            Or even ask TM.

No seriously, Pienaar has 31prs over last 4 weeks with PPG 4.5 vs Jelly's 5 PPG. The plus for me is getting Pienaar makes it possible to keep Rvp AND Rooney for me.

But then again do I want Cisse vs Citeh? Tough one that.

            Jelly might be on peno's?

You win some, you lose some. 🙁
At least i don't have to spend a trade to get him in now. 😀

Boot RVP for one week, Jim. Jooi, why Bale?

I'm thinking my old mucker, VD of V and Jellyface, might prove to be handy differs.

I still think Bale is the most likely Spurs attacker to play all of both games. The reason he's been doing badly is Spurs have been doing badly. I decided one had to either ignore Spurs attack altogether or go Bale. And I couldn't bring myself to ignore them.

Might well boot RVP for a week actually. Jelavic is very tempting.

Bale isn't scoring points though whereas VDV had some really good stats last game. He's played 4/5 so looks like getting a run. BOL/BLB could be cannon fodder for him.

VDV might be a very good shout, but I'm worried about his game time. I guess with this Ade thing going on, he should be safe...

That's exactly my thinking. I've imported Jelly and Bale. RvP will be back in GW 37 for Cisse.

I will be taking a hit to get in VDV for Sess. Bolton is a decent fixture, but sess' following two are horrible. And sunderland have forgotten how to score.

If I can work out a decent defender to get, i will be taking a hit for kompany too. Don't know who is worth it though.

Yes, I wouldn't mind ridding myself of Sess. Can't afford VDV for him though.

Cech tempts me in goal too, since both Krul and Vorm have terrible 37 and 38 fixtures. But I'd have to fund that somehow.

We have similar teams this week with the exception of me playing having Swansea defensive coverage and you having Verm. Also I have Silva & McClean instead of Sess & Valencia.

Anyway, the point I'm trying to make is that I just did Walcott > Bale and feel good about it. I'm leaving it at that as I have no FTs but your 1 FT looks tempting. Perhaps Valencia could make way for a week since he's sat on your bench and you could bench Sess instead.

I wouldn't feel like you have to make a move though and I agree with your sentiments about Pienaar not being good enough to get into your team, DGW or not. Don't forget though, there are only 3 GWs left and a cheeky punt now won't be that bad if they turn out rubbish

Thanks for that reply - one can end up feeling as if one *needs* to have about 8 dgwers when reading some posts here, and I know that isn't necessarily the way to go. Still very tempted by the Jellyman though. (Follow the Jelavic road?)

Rooney to Jelly and Sess to Pienaar I would think makes alot of sense?

TW, is response to your earlier post about potential signings for each team. The only first team spot that needs strengthening is at full back. Santon can play either side, so we will bring in either a right or left back. Hopefully Simpson will stay as quality cover. You are right that we mainly need to improve the squad. The likes of williamson, perch, raylor, guthrie, ameobi, best are not good enough to be first change cover in a team in europe. So we will need to buy somebody to challenge for a first team spot in pretty much every position. But, if we carry on with the success of our signings in recent years, that needn't cost a ridiculous amount.

Tiote would be absolutely perfect for Man Utd or Chelsea, but hopefully we can get to the champions league so that we don't need to cash in on him.

ok that would make sense. i would think you would want to bring in a winger so you can play winger cisse barfa up front and use ba as a sub or start ba and sub cisse. how effective has ba been on the wing honestly??
and maybe a better mid to pair cabaye and tiote?
but yeahh it probably shouldn't cost you a ton if you deal wisely. and maybe take a few players on loan too perhaps. to meet all your needs what do you think it would cost you? 10-15 mil or more like 20?

yeahh im pulling for you guys for champions league! but would also hate to see arsenal or spurs miss out as i think both those teams really need champions league to help them get a few more signings they need. wish we could see one of the manchester teams miss out for a year....
think you can hold him without champions league?

also with champions league you guys might be able to bring in a few bigger names perhaps... not sure what sort of budget youve got though

To be honest, Ba has been doing a job on the left of the 3, but no more than that. If he doesn't grow more into the position, I would be happy for him to leave, and for us to get somebody else in more suited to the position (hoilett?). But if we can get back Ba back to his early season form, in his new position, then our front 3 will be ridiculous!! If Ba did leave, it would solve a problem of what we will do doing the african nations cup!!

Guttierrez is one of the unsung heroes of the season, and has adapted really well to his new position. The best past about it is with him playing there, we can switch between 4-3-3, and 4-4-2 without having to make any substitutions.

I reckon 20 million would give us a squad capable of coping with europe, and hopefully challenging in the top 6 again next season. That is basically the money that we would get for qualifying for the champions league OR selling tiote! Let's hope we do the former!
