Among the eight teams to play twice during Gameweek 36, Stoke are by far the least prolific in terms of attacking potential. Having netted just 32 times thus far, Tony Pulis’ side sit firmly at the foot of the “Goals Scored” table with four matches left to play.

It is a statistic that will hardly fill Fantasy managers with confidence as they eye up the Potters ahead of the upcoming double Gameweek, but a closer look at Stoke’s home and away record shows there is still hope among their red and white striped ranks.

The Prospects

Home clashes during Gameweek 36, against an Arsenal team looking to secure third spot and a resurgent Everton, are not the easiest games on paper. The key aspect here, though, is not the opposition but the fact that Pulis’ side play both their games at the Britannia. Stoke’s poor goal tally can largely be put down to their woeful away record – of their 32 goals, 21 have been in front of their home fans, as have six of their nine clean sheets.

Arsenal are also enduring something of a slump, giving investors in Stoke’s ranks further hope. Arsene Wenger’s side have won just two of their last five matches and in Gameweek 35 were left frustrated during a 0-0 draw against a patched up Chelsea team with one eye on this week’s Champions League semi-final clash with Barcelona. With Robin Van Persie scoring only once in his last seven, hopes of a clean sheet for Stoke against the Gunners are perhaps better than previously anticipated, although their strikers may face a tough time – Arsenal have returned five clean sheets in their last seven matches.

Stoke defenders face a far sterner test against Everton, who are quite simply rampant in front of goal right now, scoring 14 in their last five matches. During this recent run, the Toffees have also managed to keep three clean sheets but have shipped six goals, giving the Potters’ attackers a sliver of hope.

The Likely Lads

With nine goals to his name thus far, the 6.1 priced Peter Crouch is Stoke’s main attacking threat. Five of those have come at home, including his goal of the season strike against Manchester City in Gameweek 30. With four assists and 14 bonus points this season he offers the chance of further points over the two games – it’s also worth noting that Crouch has scored in three of his last four at the Britannia.

Elsewhere in midfield, Stoke’s tricky wingers – Matthew Etherington and Jermaine Pennant, with six assists each, are also worth considering. Etherington, at 6.5, with three goals and 15 bonus points, is perhaps the more consistent of the pair, though Pennant, who is priced at 5.6, has been in decent form of late, providing an assist in three of his last four appearances. If he shake off the virus that forced him to remain on the bench for last week’s trip to Newcastle, he could produce.

Stoke’s defence is perhaps where the shrewdest Fantasy managers will cast their gaze and, in particular, the attacking strength offered by 5.6 priced Robert Huth. The German has been in solid form of late, scoring in two of his last three games and also picking up four bonus, for an average of seven points per game – all this without a clean sheet in that run of matches. Ryan Shawcross, who has a 5.3 price tag, is another to consider. The Potters’ skipper seems more likely to earn bonus points – he has 13 compared to Huth’s seven.

Among Premier League goalkeepers, the risk of rotation perhaps hangs heaviest over Stoke’s. Currently Asmir Begovic is the main contender but Thomas Sorenson is always looming in the wings, with Tony Pulis having a track record of showing no mercy at switching his options between the posts if the form drops. Despite this threat, the 4.5m priced Begovic, with 81 points and five bonus points remains the best Stoke purchase between the sticks. The fact that the Bosnian has started the last nine offers a little more confidence for his Fantasy suitors.

Cheeky Punt

There was a time earlier this season when Stoke’s penalty-taking forward Jon Walters was an almost essential pick, due to his listing in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) as a midfielder. The Irishman has fallen by the wayside over the last few months, though – with the last of his five goals coming in Gameweek 19, it’s something of an understatement to say Walters is woefully out of form. Despite this, his spot kick duties plus his five assists, 10 bonus points and 6.0 price tag cannot be completely dismissed.

I think that Spurs will be very solid in defence next season, with Dawson and Caulker. Plenty of cover too in Kaboul, King, Gallas, Nelson. Still not sold on BAE though. Not sure if his attacking play makes up for his dodgy defending.

he's surprisingly effective. i used to play fullback and at each position there are players who just do it even though they look bad

i remember arsenal playing spurs and i was thinking walcott would destroy him, but bae marked him out of the game

tottenham have kept a lot of cleansheets and he's one of the reasons.

hibbert = no no because that would be another hit and im already doing an 8pter. if i was taking an extra hit id probably go for terry. already own kelly and enrique so its simply which one to start.

        why pie?

doesn't bale get into more advanced/attacking positions and/or is more likely to get fantasy points form and fixtures aside??

why pienaar over bale though? just wondering. doesn’t bale get into more advanced/attacking positions and/or is more likely to get fantasy points form and fixtures aside?? or is that not the case? also if i go for pienaar would you get bale instead of vdv? or vdv instead of bale?

ughh its kelly who was injured and could miss out(?) and has a tougher gw vs enrique who could be rotated/benched and/or could be playing with a second string liverpool team vs dempsey and fulham but has easier fixtures

            Re: Bale vs Pie...

In all honesty neither are in red-hot FPL form at the moment but since they both have DGWs, look likely to play both games and have the potential to get attacking points then they are being considered. I went for Bale myself on the grounds that he has had a great season and if Spurs perform, he will hopefully be involved. Pienaar on top form is probably better than an out of form Bale but I don't know how long form will last, especially at this stage of the season.

but the latter now has this arrest business, and I believe both Rooney and Tevez will get one or two a piece in the derby (it was a ridiculously open game last time around).

    Hey all knowledgable peeps,

Just a quick question about Val. What is the reason MU scored 4 goals and he didn't figure in any of them?
As a Val owner I just want to know if it's likely to continue? Is it because of Nani being back?
If so is Nani a def starter from now on?
Or is it some other reason?

I watched the United Everton game and he was pretty quiet throughout; Distin did a job on him.

Nani saw a lot of the ball and Valencia drifted in from the right to get involved at times. I wouldn't say his performance was because of Nani though.

Cheers. I have a little bit of a dilemma with my defenders though.

I currently have Terry, Simpson, Riise, Vermaelen and Evans. I will definitely be playing Terry and Simpson, so which defender should fill the last slot? I fancy Vermaelen's chances of keeping a clean sheet, and I can't see Riise keeping any clean sheets in their two away games. Or would you even take a hit to bring in Jagielka/BAE for Riise and play one of them?

I wouldn't take a hit, I'd throw Verm in. They may not get a clean sheet, but you can be sure Wenger will be telling Verm to get in the Stoke box for set pieces against the Stoke bullies.

I can't see Arsenal scoring against Stoke on set-pieces to be honest. But either way, I can't see Stoke have scored the last amount of goals this season so the chances of Arsenal keeping a clean sheet is quite good. So you would certainly play Vermaelen over Riise (who has a DGW)?

If it's just the 1 transfer I'd go for Cech.

Caulker and Sagna willprobably provide a clean sheet anyway.
I would bet on Man Utd scoring against Man City, so the most profit for you is with that transfer. You might even get 2 clean sheets out of it.

You need to work out your 1st 3 defenders for GW37 & GW38. If the new player only plays this game then you have to cover the hit or it is sorta pointless unless he has great potential to cover it this week & cover the hit. Hopefully he doesn't do a Collins last week.

I have to sell Sess this week for a hit. Not really worried by the hit this week as it's a DGW & Sess would be benched in GW37-38. I think a hit for Sess this week for you is a no-brainer as the replacement will possibly only need to score 6-7 to cover the hit plus you get value out of them in the next 2 GWs. Sess could score well this week but do you really want to rely on him. I did last week & lost points for it.

    Morning,

I'm still pissed that few weeks back I started to play safe (wait all games before transfers) and only ended 0.1 short of getting vermaelen.
Verm/Sagna has already cost me 8 points and looks like I will have to play sagna this week, I'm feeling 'what a heck, take a 4 pointer and change for verm'.

I think that, that 4 points will be gained in coming 3 weeks, but I suppose it looks quite stupid to do it now, double gw and all.

Can you talk me out of it?

Btw. defence is shit, and my rivals have vermaelen..

    Double thinking my defense.
Have Caulker (WOL), and Verm (sto) inked in, but now am wondering between:
Kelly (eve, liv) or McAuley (AVL)
Hard to see Fulham keeping either sheet clean, but DGW is DGW after all....

    What say you?

I doubt Kelly will play 2 games. He has a serious hand injury & mightn't play both or any game.

Been looking for news on that, but nothing much yet. FPL site says he is due back for the weekend, but they haven't been the most reliable. Hand injury shouldn't affect football performance, but it sure seems to.

TM any official information on this?

also does that mean you'd play enrique over kelly for the week (my dilemma right now)

Should I bench valencia over siggy this week? Can see the derby being a cagey affair. Wolves are a beaten team.

Wolves suck no matter where they are playing. Last crap team to come to Liberty was Blackburn and Siggy put up 14. The "he doesn't score at home" thing may have come from the fact that the home matches he has had so far have been: Arsenal, Chelsea, Norwich, City, Everton, Newcastle and Blackburn. Huge schedule disparity.

I don't buy this can't score at home nonsense either, he's on grass, with a round ball with same set of goals in front of him...

Go with Siggy. See my post upstream about Valencia performances in tough matches. Past performances don't guarantee future returns, but they sure can make one skeptical...

One of Tevez or Aguero to Jelavic maybe. If Baines is injured, maybe worth getting rid of him for someone aswell.

Downgrading Tevez or Aguero should give you enough money to do Cabaye or Petrov > Bale or vDV.

I'd upgrade Cayabe and keep Sigurdsson, reason being is you've already got Cisse for Newcastle cover and wig/che are two difficult matches.

You might have wasted a transfer there then. Perhaps do Petrov > Bale then. I know Bolton are fighting to stay up, but Sunderland away is a very tough game, as will the match be against Tottenham.

Today's newspaper reports, were probably written based on the twitter rumours at the weekend, so should still maybe be taken with a pinch of salt. Having said that, I won't be getting him in. And its great news for the toon if its true!! 🙂

I have a front three of

    Aguero Rooney RVP

    Will do Aguero to Jelly.

    Q) Is it worth doing another transfer for a hit to bring in another DGW striker. Who should I bring in if yes ( cant get Cisses as already have 3 Newcastle players)
