Our analysis of next monthโ€™s Euro 2012 tournament in Poland and Ukraine continues with a look at Group B. Having run the rule over Denmarkโ€™s Fantasy assets yesterday, itโ€™s time to turn our attentions to one of the favourites to take the trophy โ€“ Germany.

Joachim Lowโ€™s men get their campaign underway on Saturday June 9, the second day of the tournament, with a 7.45pm kick-off against Portugal. Next up is a clash with Holland four days later โ€“ once again, Germany have an evening match here โ€“ before they square up to Denmark in their final group match, at 7.45pm on Sunday June 17.

While Denmark are considered the weakest link in what looks the toughest group of all, Morten Olsenโ€™s men finished above Portugal in qualifying, with six wins and just a single defeat in eight matches. A second place finish mean the Portuguese had to see off Bosnia Herzegovina 6-2 in the play-offs, while Holland topped their group with nine wins and 37 goals in 10 games.

The Road to Qualification

Germany arrive as one of only two teams โ€“ along with Spain โ€“ to win all of their qualifying matches; Lowโ€™s side ran way with their six-team group, with second placed Turkey finishing 13 points adrift of top spot. A consistently reliable source of goals, they found the net at least three times in eight of their showdowns and racking up a total of 34 goals. At the back, while they shipped just seven goals, their attacking forays made them susceptible to the counter โ€“ they failed to keep a clean sheet in their last five and chalked up just four in total.

Most Appearances: Neuer, Lahm, Muller (10), Ozil, Podolski, Badstuber (9), Kroos, Khedira (8)

Top Goalscorer: Klose (9), Gomez (6), Ozil (5), Podolski, Muller, Schurrle (3)

Top Assists: Ozil (7), Muller (5), Podolski (3)

The Likely Lads

In spite of a 10.0 price tag, itโ€™s no real surprise to see Mesut Ozil as the most popular German player so far in the McDonalds game, with 26.3% ownership. Playing in the hole in a 4-2-3-1, Ozil flourished in the qualifying campaign โ€“ he was top for assists, with seven, and also found the net five times, playing a role in more of Germanyโ€™s goals than any other playing. The Real Madrid man also takes the majority of set-pieces and arrives in strong form, with four goals and 17 assists in the previous La Liga campaign.

Although the talents of Toni Kroos, Marco Reus and Mario Gotze offer cheaper routes into the midfield area, not one of the trio is likely to cement a role in Lowโ€™s first XI, with game time off the bench more likely. Bastian Schweinsteiger, on the other hand, is a nailed-on option in the central midfield double-pivot and, priced at 9.0, offers a cheaper alternative to Ozil. Schweinsteigerโ€™s goal threat is highlighted by 23 goals in 90 appearances for the national side โ€“ he also stepped up for Germanyโ€™s last spot-kick, in a 3-1 win in Turkey, though his confidence will now doubt have taken a dip after Saturdayโ€™s miss in the Champions League Final defeat against Chelsea.

With uncertainty surrounding the lone frontman role, Thomas Muller and Lukas Podolski both offer the security of starts on the right and left of the attacking midfield three respectively. While some may be deterred by their classification as forwards, Germanyโ€™s attacking potential meant the pair still picked up plenty returns in qualifying โ€“ they grabbed three goals apiece, though Muller edged it for assists by five to three. Priced at 9.5 to Podolskiโ€™s 10.0, Muller is kinder on the budget and, with just 6.1% ownership, in addition to two goals in the last three friendlies, may appeal to those scouring the market for differentials.

Cheeky Punt

With just four clean sheets accrued over their ten group games and a host of other sides offering strong cut-price alternatives at the back, itโ€™s hard to be overly enthused with regards to Germanyโ€™s costly defensive options. At 8.0, Philipp Lahm is the joint most expensive defender in the McDonalds game and despite his occasional corner kicks, he failed to score in qualifying and has had a disappointing domestic campaign with Bayern, providing just three assists for the Bundesliga runners-up. For those intent on snapping up one of Germanyโ€™s backline, Jerome Boateng comes in at 6.5, far easier on the budget than Lahm, and looks to have made the right-back slot his own.

If any one of Miroslav Klose or Mario Gomez can make the lone forward role their own, the potential for points looks substantial. Problem is, thereโ€™s so much uncertainty over their game time that snapping up either of the pairโ€™s services looks nothing more than a punt at present. Both have alternated up front over Germanyโ€™s last six, with three starts apiece and, priced at 11.5, are surely too much budget to gamble on โ€“ the upcoming friendlies against Switzerland and Israel may offer more clarity on the situation. Klose certainly offers the better chance of a differential โ€“ at present he has just 1.8% ownership to Gomezโ€™s 14.3%, despite scoring nine goals in qualifying to the latterโ€™s six.

There must be something I can do - perhaps get a social life, go travelling or get a girlfriend in the meantime?

No, I'll just sit quietly in a darkened corner and wait for the fixture list.

It will be interesting to see how many players we end up with, I've gone for mainstream players, but not exactly players who I am actually wanting in the game, that would just spoil my tactics. Are we doing just 1 bidding round or more later?

Also, what does Tie Order mean

Okay gents, appreciate a bit of feedback on this little lot if you have a kind heart and 30secs to spare:

    Cech
    Piszczek - K Papa - Kadlec - Zhikcov
    Mandzukic - Ozil - Sneidjar
    Jelavic - Lewandowski - RVP

Hart - Larson - Yarmolenko - M Olsson all playing on the final day and to come on and replace the one/two point biffers.

Any obvious errors or improvements much appreciated......1.0Euro in the bank to buy Greece (or Ronaldo for GW2) if required

The problem is that , if you let them in , they won't join the bidding .
Unless you let them in first and then change the deadline once more. ( maybe)
Currently we are seven in the league, are you planning to add more?

That problem is also solved, with a possible list of players and prices you can set up for the comp to draft for you. Also even if you dont set up your draft choices the comp will choose for you with average prices for different players calculated for given league size.( dough U will usually end up with a crap team that way )

PREMIER LEAGUE 12/13 FIXTURE CONGESTION/DOUBLE GAMEWEEKS, ETC

The Premier League fixtures haven't been announced yet but today I started thinking about next season fantasywise and thought I'd share my thoughts. It's mostly speculation and nonsense, but I felt like writing something kind of lengthy.

    1. Season start date

The first matches will be played on Saturday, 18th August. This is the third Saturday in August. The last two seasons have kicked off on the second Saturday in August. Back in 2009/10, when the season kicked off on the third Saturday in August, most teams also played the following midweek to make up for it. Some teams such as Arsenal, however, had European qualification matches to play, which led to a blank Gameweek 2 for them (and a subsequent double gameweek later on - can't remember when). Perhaps we'll see another Gameweek 2 with blank patches this year?

    2. European/Inter-Continental Cups

Chelsea, Man City, Man United and Arsenal have all qualified for the Champions League group stages. No Premier League teams have to go through a qualifying round this year.

Tottenham have qualified for the Europa League group stages. Newcastle and Liverpool must qualify via the play-off round (1st leg: 23 August, 2nd leg: 30 August), and Liverpool must also play another qualifying round to reach this point (1st leg: 2 August, 2nd leg: 9 August). I'm therefore predicting a blank gameweek 2 for Newcastle, Liverpool, and their scheduled gameweek 2 opponents. These midweek fixtures aren't guaranteed by any means though - I'm just anticipating them due to the late start. I'd have thought that Liv and New will field weakened sides for these matches because the Europa League won't be high up the priority list, but with 4 teams potentially missing gameweek 2, it may be worth avoiding certain players so that you can field a starting 11. Back in 09/10, I think a lot of people avoided Arsenal players though, and they ended up thrashing Everton 6-0 in their opening match!

The UEFA Super Cup will take place on Friday 31st August between Chelsea and Atlético Madrid. I'm therefore expecting Chelsea and their scheduled oppontents to have a blank gameweek on the gameweek commencing Saturday 1st September. The match won't be rescheduled for later that week because players will be travelling to their World Cup qualifiers for international duty. This will lead to an eventual Chelsea double gameweek.

Chelsea will also be playing in the Club World Cup in Japan in December. They'll play matches on Thu/Fri 13/14th and Sun 16th December, so I'm anticipating 1 blank gameweek for Chelsea and their scheduled opponents.

    3. Olympic and Euro fatigue

Football at the Olympics is on from 26th July-11th August, so a few of the younger players may feel a bit fatigued after playing 3-6 matches. Squads haven't been announced yet and I can't see there being too many Premier League players from certain competing countries, but Great Britain (which includes Northern Ireland as well) should have a few Premier League players, and maybe the odd Brazilian such as Rafael may be prone to rotation.

Most players should have recovered from the Euros by the start of the season, but maybe worth favouring players who are completely fresh?

Don't really have a conclusion as such - just wanted to speculate about any potential blank/double gameweeks as they always make the game a bit more exciting. The fixtures are announced on Monday 18th June, so we'll know a bit more then.

Difficulty to judge how much cash you have left with that system unless it was done one player at a time. How about if every manager made a private list of the players they would like to nominate, then the system goes round to each manager and discretely picks the top player in their list not yet considered and an auction begins for that player?
