Spain and Italy’s opener proved further disappointment for Fantasy managers earlier this evening. The likes of Andres Iniesta was heavily backed in Day Three’s Captain Poll but failed to produce the goods as the Azzurri’s switch to 3-5-2 saw them capture a draw.

The other two in Spain’s front three, David Silva and Cesc Fabregas, were amongst the points as the City man provided an assist for Cesc’s equaliser, though captaincy owners of the Italy starting front pair will be looking to switch the armband, after Mario Balotelli and Antonio Cassano both drew a blank.

Those who captained Mario Mandzukic will undoubtedly be keeping the armband on the Croatia man after a double in this evening’s win over Republic of Ireland. Fantasy managers who handed Nikica Jelavic the armband may be tempted to roll the dice one last time tomorrow but, with only two of the 12 teams scoring more than once in the opening six games, plenty may decide to stick.

For many, tomorrow now offers another chance to pick up a decent captain points haul. France take their 21 game unbeaten run into the early kick-off against England and, with Franck Ribery and Karim Benzema both in eye-catching form, the pair will find many backers, despite an upturn in English resilience in their two games under Roy Hodgson. Ashley Young comes into contention for their opponents, though doubts remain over whether it’ll be Andy Carroll or Danny Welbeck to lead the line alongside the United man.

Looking at Sweden’s and Ukraine’s form at the back, perhaps the evening game offers the best opportunity. The Swedes have returned a single clean sheet in their last eight, while Oleg Blokhin’s side have kept out the opposition just once in their previous six. Zlatan Ibrahimovic looks a strong bet, then, while Ola Toivonen, Seb Larsson and Kim Kallstrom all offer decent opportunities of picking up the points. For the co-hosts, Andriy Yarmolenko, Yevhen Konoplyanka and Andriy Shevchenko will all be hoping to get their campaign off to a strong start.

    Captain choices:

Already have Ramos with 4 points (8 as captain). Had Mandzukic, but didn't captain - annoying!

    Now can choose between:

    Young
    Benzema
    Lloris
    J.Olsson

... or stick with Ramos. J.Olsson is currently benched. Should I bring him on? My lowest points scorer is 2, so he'd have to score more than that to be worth the sub. But I don't think he'll be Captain worthy.

It's conceivable that Lloris will keep a clean sheet or at least make saves. Benzema is in fine form. I'm also English, so almost leaning towards Young so I don't over-celebrate at France's (perhaps inevitable) victory and points-haul.

    Tricky one...

    What do you think?

I'd captain Benzema. Worst he'll get is 2, but a high chance he'll do something and get 5+. 4 doubled is worth the small risk.

No urgent need to buy Gomez, Andersen or Mandzukic.

Agree with all the named sells minus the German attackers. Think they could still be worth something. You try replacing those group A defenders... Still think that group will be cagey and won't have that many goals, at least this match day.

The holds I agree with completely.

Ta. I know you're going by fixtures but I've named Gomez because I believe he's made himself nailed on for the next game and being nailed on as the centre of the German attack against that Dutch defence is good enough for me. Andersen at that price looks irresistible against a Portuguese team that didn't look that convincing in attack. Mandzukic just looks like great value and I don't think Italy will play Croatia nearly as defensively as they did Spain.

I rate Podolski and Muller but the poor fixtures for the big guns improve this Matchday and I think there are better alternatives.

I respectfully disagree re. Portugal. I reckon they'll score against Denmark. They just need a reason to attack, and when they were forced to chase the game against Germany, they applied pressure well and got great chances.

As you can see I'm in no rush to buy Danish defenders... but as Mull says 4m for Andersen is a punt I'm willing to take. Or at least hedge if I get Portuguese attackers! Who do you reckon will score? It's got to be CR7 right? Postiga and Nani were nowhere...

Fair do's! To be fair, he looked lively against Denmark but was so bloody wasteful. The bigger reason for my lack of faith in Holland all round is that I think they'll self-destruct. Mentality issues, certain Dutch fans I know were predicting doom for them before the tournament started...

You know, I think the Danish defense was underrated coming into the tournament, but have now been overrated after beating Holland.

They did not play particularly well defensively, left a lot of spaces to exploit, and if Holland had RVP on form or someone who could put one in the back of the net, the scoreline would have been very different. Lost count of the number of times they blazed the ball over the net. In many ways, the Danes got lucky.

Meanwhile, Portugal didn't score, but had some good looks against a strong German team with Hummels dominant.

I think Portugal will beat Denmark on Wednesday.

Side note: Keith Andrews could have scored a hat-trick... He's getting forward Lampard-esque, and if he wasn't so awful at finishing, he'd have bagged a few. Hope he scabs a goal next week for my team!

Just checked... it is the only match we get lineups so could wait on it, but if it isn't him the next alternative is 0.5 up and that messes everything up. Czechs didn't look as bad in attack as they were made out to be, either. They can pass.

The Danes did get lucky. They didn't defend nearly as well as Portugal or Italy, for example, but got a better result.

I think the Portuguese chances were created largely on the break against a German team on the attack - I'm not sure whether Denmark will be so aggressive. German fullbacks in my view played badly in the match, left tons of space for Portugal to use on the wing and forced their center backs to save them. That said, my man Boateng did make a superb goal-saving block on Ronaldo...

      Well spotted on Andrews...

And yeah, he snatched at so many chances. Can't forgive missing the free header though. I walked out of the room I was so mad after that miss. My team is doing terribly. 1 goal, no clean sheets, no assists. Hopefully my French contingent will fix that tomorrow!

      Yes!

Certain people seem to think Italy will play 3-5-2 again just because it worked against Spain, but personally I don't think so. You play the best formation for a particular opponent... and this 3-5-2 was specifically tailored to Spain. You don't play De Rossi as a center-back because that's his best position, you play him there because you have to, and same with the formation. I think they'll revert to 4-3-1-2 for opponents they reckon they can beat. Opponents they reckon they can't beat, they'll defer to them and change to a more suitable system.

If I do the Greek GK over Andersen, that gives me 2 GK's from Group A, and don't think that is a wise move

      Cassano instead of Di Natale.
Wouldn't bother with Khedira or Busquets.
      Don't like your goalies.

Affelay is great value now we know he's a starter and the Dutch need results £3m cheaper than Sneijder. Would also think Iniesta or Fabregas will have a field day against Ireland.

I think we'll see DiNatale starting over Ballotelli going forward. Story going around that Neth may start Kuyt over Affelay to get more of an attacking side for Germany game. Khedira was most impressive German midfielder in Game 1. Took Busquests because that was all I could afford for Spanish coverage

What is your hesitation on Benzema? Lone stiker with Ribery/Nasri supporting him. You picked him for a reason......as you could have picked Ibra as a "last day" captians threat. Give him the armband and sleep well.

BTW....England will score tomorrow. Gerrard on a penalty from an Ashley Young dive in the box!!!!!!!

Benzema could score and England still win however if Debuchy scores points England won't score so won't win.

You don't want to be in a situation where you're cheering England failing to win, so go Benzema.

    WC squad.

    Chalkas/Lloris
    Alba/Lescott/Berezutski/Periquis/Maniatis
    Ozil/Iniesta/Young/Shirokov/Andrews
    Lew/Cassano/Benz

0.5 left incase i need to upgrade Greek GK. If set will upgrade Berezutski>Zhirkov

Normally i would agree with you.....but i am looking for a CS possibility on the last day for 2 GW's. Why not Young?? Would you go Gerrard instead or stay away from Eng, all together?

Hey Scratch....re your statement above...you think Affelay is nailed on for 2 games? Do you see him being subbed for Kuyt? I really want him if nailed on.

Simply put, I think Young is absolutely sh!te and would much rather have Fabregas, Dzagoev, Schweinsteiger or Pirlo.

About Affelay, no idea. First i've heard about Kuyt regaining his place we'll hopefully get more news over the next day or two.

        The Co-manager of Agrentina predicts the following;

        Ibra 6
        Cabaye 3
        Lescott 3

I thinking Japan's going to take it.

Meanwhile over in Group C Argentina is thrashing Ivory Coast (88-59) eventhough they messed up their captains choice today (failed to give the armband to Jelly and Mandy). They will be looking forward to the match up in GW2 v Japan (probably will decide who will be top of Group C) and GW3 vs Serbia.

WOW! That's a high scoring match up. After making subs, Holland will be going into today's games with a grand total of 57 points, with 7 to play (1 capt)!!! It didn't help that Flynn got two red cards on the first day!! There has got to be some sort of prize for that!!

Looks like a walkover for denmark in the first game. It seems that both managers captained Dzagoev. What makes it worse was that I had the armband on him until the last minute and switched to kerzhakov!!

Good Luck China.....it is a toss up for you guys....hope you win.

Archie and I kind of out managed ourselves today.....We decided to give the armband to the Croat GK and he gave it to Alba. I had it on Mandy and he on Jellly all morning. When the site froze we panicked and totally messed it up. Thankfully it will not hurt us.

We both twisted off of Lewandowski too....if we managed to get our captain correct.....we would have really smoked them.

    Alreet lads

I've been away this weekend so haven't caught any of the games. A couple of questions for my WC.

    1) Will RVP keep his place after missing loads of chances? Could get Gomez or Ronaldo instead
    2) Who's this Pilar guy that I keep seeing on RMT's?
    3) Are spain likely to keep the same formation with Fabregas furthest forward?
    4) Did the spain and italy defences look tight?

      1. Not sure of the RVP issue....im staying clear
      2. He had a good game for CZE...cheap at 5.0
      3. I think Spain will change up the formation
      4. Did not see the whole match....but from what i saw they looked beatable.
