This evening’s couple of Group D clashes brought the curtain down Matchday 1 and affords Fantasy managers the chance to reassess their captaincy options ahead of the next four days’ worth of fixtures. Many will be wielding wildcards, while others will bring a more patient approach as we roll out the Captain Poll for Day 1 of Matchday 2:

Croatia’s Mario Mandzukic and Russia’s Alan Dzagoev were the top scorers in the first batch of matches, returning 13 points each after both bagged a brace against Republic of Ireland and Czech Republic respectively.

Dzagoev is handed the chance to continue his form as Russia square up to Poland in tomorrow’s evening kick-off. Roman Shirokov and Andrei Arshavin all picked up points from Dick Advocaat’s starting XI in the 4-1 win and will also be under consideration for the armband, while Roman Pavlyuchenko’s goal and assist contribution from the bench will perhaps cast doubts over Aleksandr Kerzhakov’s starting role, after the latter missed seven chances to find the net last Friday.

For the co-hosts, Robert Lewandowski will be looking to get amongst the goals once again, after notching in Poland’s opening day clash with Greece. Jakub Blaszczykowski provided an assist against the Greeks and will be in the mix, while Ludovic Obraniak’s set-piece duties perhaps boost his chance s of returns.

Elsewhere in Group A, the Czech Republic will perhaps be reliant on the likes of Vaclav Pilar and Jaroslav Plasil to pick up the points again. The former notched his side’s consolation in the Russia defeat, while Plasil bagged an assist after providing seven goalscoring opportunities. Tomas Rosicky’s role in the hole and Milan Baros’ place as the lone forward in a 4-2-3-1 system will also afford the pair a chance to impress.

For Greece, Dimitris Salpingidis’ contribution from the bench in the Poland game may well see him start. A 45 minute second half appearance harvested a goal, with a point also picked up for earning a penalty. Theofanis Gekas and Giorgos Samaras should maintain their roles in the front three, with the creativity of Giorgos Karagounis always liable to provide a spark for Fernando Santos’ side.

So, David Silva anybody? Pricey and listed as a forward, but he is a forward so it's only fair! Think he could be a shrewd pick

Iniesta or Fabregas are better picks because they play along side Silva, are cheaper than Silva and get more points per goal than Silva.

But do you not feel that Fabregas could be rotated and that Silva offers more potential for goals and assists in the end than Iniesta does?

One of the big upsides of Silva is that he's not affected by that. He'll play regardless of the number 9 situation

At a higher level isn't the reason Spanish attackers aren't number one for all of us that there's too many of them? I think that's the more fundamental reason. You're playing roulette. It could be Iniesta, it could be Silva, it could be Fabregas, it could be Torres, it could be Xavi, it could be Alonso, heck, it could be Mata, it could be Llorente...

The moment the Spanish center forward position is nailed on I will take it. No one else.

Point taken, but one of my reasons of looking at Silva is that he will keep his place regardless of what Del Bosque decides to do with his #9 position. That's a really good thing, no?

You're obviously anticipating Spain to giveus a hiding? Won't happen. Silva is overpriced for a midfielders scores and way beyond overpriced as a forward. If Fabregas starts I reckon he's the only Spanish player with a decent price tag.

No need to go on the defensive Greenred! Surely it's natural to look at options from the current European and World champions when they will need to get results out of their two next games?

I'm very put off by the rotation risk of Fabregas. I reckon he should start but am not willing to risk it.

He's nailed on the left yes. That's tempting. But the combination of Spain generally forcing their opponents into parking the bus (last World Cup they won with only 1-0s, this Euro they start with a 1-1) and the wide forwards in the Spanish system not really getting into the goals that much means there's far less than 9.5-worth of points on offer IMO.

Maybe he's worth it against Ireland as their defence looks worse than most.

Fair enough - good reasoning and it is something I do fear. Just have that feeling that he's looked dangerous in their friendlies and also against Italy and that he is a tad more interesting in scoring/assisting than passing it around, something that can't be said for all his team mates!

I agree on that, he at least threatened to shoot against Italy. It really is about the alternatives. If there isn't a nailed on alternative striker with a good fixture for a good team I'd give it a try.

I had Iniesta in my WC team, but have switched Iniesta and Benzema to Silva and Nasri (same price)

Mainly because I thought Nasri was more involved and more threatening than Benzema vs England, and Silva represents equally good Spanish coverage as Iniesta.

Silva is basically nailed on, but I have to say I feel Iniesta is if anything the more secure of the two, if only because the midfield trio of Xavi/Busquets/Iniesta for Barcelona are effectively undroppable and del Bosque loves all three of them.
That said he really likes Silva and I think Silva is nailed on, especially as Spain won't get to the last game having qualified

Yeah, I agree. I suppose there is a tiny risk Jesus Navas gets the nod on the right instead of Silva, but I'd say it's unlikely and even then Silva could be played in other positions. I like the moves you went for there.

You needs to go the most (no WC this week):

    A) Szczęsny (other keeper is Given vs ESP)
    B) Klose

I'd get rid of Klose. A better chance for you to bring someone in to get points. Goalkeeper switch will mean your keeper will have to keep a cleanie but you could get in some for Klose who you could capt and could score two! 🙂

Kuba has Russia( Poland have a 50-50 record against them) and a poor Czech team to play, Yarm has France and England. Kuba is group1 which allows a transfer out. Yarm just didn't look at the races( 1 cross!).

Oh really, not sure if he is much of an upgrade on Kenny. I'd prefer Ben Foster

Mail online, would prefer Foster, but I disagree, I believe he is a big step up from Kenny.

Debuchy, he looked very threatening tonight, and kept skinning Cole, was very pacy, good positional awareness and can beat a man, he has decent chance of assists the way he was playing, or even a goal, he popped up with one in the friendlies

    Price rises

Forget trying to make money, the game is too short and complicated enough. If you are wildcarding just get the players you want early, to make sure they don't go up before you get them, a .1m rise is effectively a .5m rise.

+1. People are assuming it's the same as FPL. Price changes are not the same kind of game...

    Chalkias, Andersen

    Beruzutski, Alba, Debuchy, Lescott, Selassie
    Pilar, Dzagoev, Iniesta, Sneijder, Polanski
    Ronaldo, Lewandowski, Benzema

Hello to all. Good tournament so far, isn't it? I'm very happy with my 57 points. It's a pity I was on holidays when all the pairings were done, it looks like good fun.

I WCed tonight and I think it's looking OK.....I could do a RMT but I need 3 replies to do so... 😉

Maggio because he's much more attacking, has a chance of being OOP and is an overall better player.

Maggio. OOP chance, and suppose when Barzagli is fit Bonucci has greater risk of being left out from the first eleven.

    A) Robben (c), Gerrard, Pique
    B) Ronaldo (c), Erikssen, Pique, or
    C) Ronaldo (c), Krohn-Dehli, Ramos

B and C would mean doubling up on Denmark and Portugal, and not having any coverage from Germany and the Dutch.
    All opinions appreciated!

Out of those I like C best.

Robben looked very selfish, and was having trouble beating his man in the Denmark game, Ronaldo has a good chance of goals i'd say
