This evening’s couple of Group D clashes brought the curtain down Matchday 1 and affords Fantasy managers the chance to reassess their captaincy options ahead of the next four days’ worth of fixtures. Many will be wielding wildcards, while others will bring a more patient approach as we roll out the Captain Poll for Day 1 of Matchday 2:

Croatia’s Mario Mandzukic and Russia’s Alan Dzagoev were the top scorers in the first batch of matches, returning 13 points each after both bagged a brace against Republic of Ireland and Czech Republic respectively.

Dzagoev is handed the chance to continue his form as Russia square up to Poland in tomorrow’s evening kick-off. Roman Shirokov and Andrei Arshavin all picked up points from Dick Advocaat’s starting XI in the 4-1 win and will also be under consideration for the armband, while Roman Pavlyuchenko’s goal and assist contribution from the bench will perhaps cast doubts over Aleksandr Kerzhakov’s starting role, after the latter missed seven chances to find the net last Friday.

For the co-hosts, Robert Lewandowski will be looking to get amongst the goals once again, after notching in Poland’s opening day clash with Greece. Jakub Blaszczykowski provided an assist against the Greeks and will be in the mix, while Ludovic Obraniak’s set-piece duties perhaps boost his chance s of returns.

Elsewhere in Group A, the Czech Republic will perhaps be reliant on the likes of Vaclav Pilar and Jaroslav Plasil to pick up the points again. The former notched his side’s consolation in the Russia defeat, while Plasil bagged an assist after providing seven goalscoring opportunities. Tomas Rosicky’s role in the hole and Milan Baros’ place as the lone forward in a 4-2-3-1 system will also afford the pair a chance to impress.

For Greece, Dimitris Salpingidis’ contribution from the bench in the Poland game may well see him start. A 45 minute second half appearance harvested a goal, with a point also picked up for earning a penalty. Theofanis Gekas and Giorgos Samaras should maintain their roles in the front three, with the creativity of Giorgos Karagounis always liable to provide a spark for Fernando Santos’ side.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Exact same defence as me, infact only 3 players different, I have plasil, ribery, robben instead if dzag affelay Benz.

I just thought Benz looked very poor tonight and not sure I wanna double on Russia mid but looks very strong none the less. Affelay is a rotation risk though.

me, at the end of the day people are getting caught up in dzageov and are chasing points with him in my opinion. Yes he did well but it was v poor czech side.

Lewa is overall in great form and has shown he is a pure striker for club and now for country

Thoughts on Gerrard? I know he played almost as a second holding MF today but surely Roy just did that because it was France. A possible role in an advanced position for England's 2 easier games is surely on the cards?
He can whack in a goal from long range when he wants to.

As a felow Reds supporter I thought he did well but not worth the 8.5m in the midfelers when you can get Dzagoev, Shirokov , Mandukuc etc for less and prob get you more points. If he starts against us Fabregas will be the payer of the round.

486th in the world, quite proud of that. It helps to choose a team by yourself and not fall into a generic team here. (That being said I'm sure most did well, also fully aware it's only one round in). Got Maniatis and Perquis from here though, love the intense scouting that goes into it 🙂 I think it's better to not get too worked up about your team. You can spend weeks prepping it but really just go with your gut. Not sure where the cheesy motivational post came from but maybe some might take it into account. I started doing great in FPL when I stopped caring oddly enough.

Great job. 355 places behind you 😉 Have to admit I worked my ass off for once on this team, but the picks that saved me this week (Dzagoev and Shirokov) were last minute impulse decisions going with my gut like you said.

I find I usually nail about 13/15 of my players without FFS, but FFS unearthes some real gems I wouldn't have found otherwise. There is truth in some bandwagons, you just need to investigate them for yourself.

General advice. WATCH THE GAMES 😀

I'll say it once (and possibly again), if Jan Vertonghen is priced at anything under 6.5, be it for Arsenal or Spurs snap him up. Watch him a lot, loves to get forward despite being a centre-back and has a cracking shot on him. Big aerial threat too and can take free-kicks. He'll be Spurs' very own Vermaelen!!

I fully agree here, Kos was the unsung hero for Arsenal this year. Verm plays far too high up the pitch and leaves acres of space behind him. Just very basic errors opening huge gaps in central defence. Somewhat nervous when Verm plays.

We've lost him to Spurs haven't we fo sho?

Belgian flair! They really have some excellent players, although I don't rate Vermaelen too highly - too error prone. Vertonghen is a brilliant defender as well as an excellent baller. Rarely out of position too. Surprised Barca haven't been in for him tbh with T.Silva possibly off to PSG.

Well on that note there was a persistent rumour a month or so ago that Barcelona were hunting for David Luiz.

Playstation joke aside, Luiz has come on a lot this season and played very well against Bayern in the final.

I think the Danish forwards will be all at sea with Nani and Ronaldo running at them.

Kjaer and Agger are quality, but will be exposed this round. For some strange reason Holland played their normal Dutch style around the back, but then in the last 3rd really direct and into their hands... Portugal more likely to get at them... like Robben and Affelay should have done more of as they're older and vulnerable. No defender likes that shit. Little crosses all day long is what the Kjaer's of the world relish!

Portugal's midfield three sat quite deep and tried to nullify the threat of Özil and Scweinsteiger in particular. Some tidy passing, never really offered anything going forward. Maybe he'll get forward a bit more against Denmark but I wouldn't go for him. Most noticable thing about his performance was he shaved his hair.

Was the furthest forward of their midfield 3, but not a huge threat, though i missed the first 15 minutes.

Didn't look particularly dangerous, but then Portugal's tactic v Germany seemed to be 'give it to Ronaldo where possible and hope he can do it himself'

If you want me to elaborate on Meireles, he's not got potential because Portugal don't attack down the centre but attack down the wings. He's not a great attacking midfielder in my opinion and is not being played as a CAM but more like the CM he plays for Chelsea - you know how he does there.

      Thanks people.

So for goals scored we have
      Spain 5
      Germany 5
      France 4
      Italy 4
      Russia 3
      Portugal 3
      Ukraine 1

Might have buggered up the goals concede question. I meant least goals conceded 😮

I've had a woeful start, expert help much appreciated here. Took Lescott and Lewandowski out 5 mins before deadline, Szczney in goal and a midfield that played well but got no pts. So i'm kneejerking and playing my WC (you get another after group stages I am assuming). What do people think of this epic kneejerker? (caps players subbed in/out)

    FROM

    SCZESNEY/GIVEN
Debuchy - ZHIRKOV - KADLEC - BALZRATTI -Olsson
    Sneijder - Iniesta - OZIL - Young - POLANSKI
    Ibra - Muller - Jelavic

    TO

    CHALKIAS/ANDERSON
    Olsson - ALBA - LESCOTT - Debuchy - BONUCCI
    Sneijder - NASRI - Young - Iniesta - SHIRKOV
    Ibra - Muller - Jelavic

Wondering if Ibrahimovic will get another decent performance, or if (despite his no. 10 role) Young might not be so good an option compared with Gerrard. Also just the one German.

If any1 is interested in Poland's starting line-up 4 2moro it could look like the following:

Tytoń - Piszczek, Wasilewski, Perquis, Boenisch - Polański, Murawski, Dudka - Błaszczykowski, Obraniak - Lewandowski

Smuda is afraid of the Russians and puts def mf Dudka in for att mf Rybus

Obraniak will probably stay despite his poor appearance vs Greece

Hard 2 say, 'cos Lewy is in form with a great season behind... however he can't do shite without any passes so there's the big question.

As to the whole team it doesn't even look like that, it simply is very defensive.

As I said Smuda is afraid...

I love Lewy, Kuba and Piszczek - it would be a shame if they kill their own game trying to kill Russia's game.

I suppose Smuda afraid that if he gets thrashed by the Russians he will be sacked!

I don't think the Russian defence is exactly world class. The main problem is their 4-1-4-1 shape - it's hard to mark the 4 attacking midfielders when they're making runs everywhere. I think Smuda is hoping that by packing midfield he can stop the Russians playing their game. Which is fair enough.

I think Smuda will leave after euro 12 4 some club anyhow so fear of sacking is out of the question.

U may b right with packing up the midfield.

The coach and players want 2 focus on counterattacks.

Am curious how it will all work out 2moro.

Can't forgive the coach tho 4 setting the team so defensively and not substituting Obraniak 4 Mierzejewski and letting in Dudka instead of Grosicki,,,

Sitting back cost them against Greece though. I don't think they have the defense to keep Russia out for 90 minutes. Russia will really go after Boenisch with their mobile midfield.

thats better than most forwards (benzema 2.25, cr7 2.95) and it is by far the best odds for any midfielder

asssume you will captain cr7....against andersen? don't like doing that myself

lescott & gerrard (/young) means you cant get rooney for the game vs ukraine without a hit

    Andersen, Chalkias.
    Maniatis, Alba, Maggio, Hubnik, Lescott.
    Iniesta, Gerrard, Andrews, Shirokov, Nasri.
    Benzema, lewandowski, CR7

Contemplating Gerrard for Young, but Stevie G played well!

I was upper mid I think after falling apart in Nov/Dec. H2Hs are notoriously hard to get right, but I enjoy them. Particularly pub based for bragging rights.

I orsomeone should have set up a classic as well but the H2H is fun, a bit random but the bragging rights and banter are the fun side of it.
I just seemed to be busy at work and a bit distracted, I was playing the game still, albiet badly but I just wasn't giving ffs much time. Certain elements p*ssed me off a tad which wasn't helping my general grudge with life. The only times I was really on was after a few vinos and that's not always a good thing. 😉

Is it too mad to back the croatians to beat the italians? I'm wildcarding but contemplating keeping mandzukic and jelavic hoping lightning will strike twice, and not bringing in any italian coverage,
    risky?
    stupid?
    inspired?
    thoughts?

I could see Italy conceding since their defense had issues but backing Croatia to win with Pirlo swinging in free kicks against their dodgy defense is madness.

Cheers! that was poorly worded on my part, i didn't mean win, i meant i'm keeping those 2 in my team hoping they can grab some spoints, the italians are likely to beat them sure, so are the spanish, but they are such good value i'm finding it hard to let them go, especially as there is always that chance as has happened in recent years that the italians will implode!
