This evening’s couple of Group D clashes brought the curtain down Matchday 1 and affords Fantasy managers the chance to reassess their captaincy options ahead of the next four days’ worth of fixtures. Many will be wielding wildcards, while others will bring a more patient approach as we roll out the Captain Poll for Day 1 of Matchday 2:

Croatia’s Mario Mandzukic and Russia’s Alan Dzagoev were the top scorers in the first batch of matches, returning 13 points each after both bagged a brace against Republic of Ireland and Czech Republic respectively.

Dzagoev is handed the chance to continue his form as Russia square up to Poland in tomorrow’s evening kick-off. Roman Shirokov and Andrei Arshavin all picked up points from Dick Advocaat’s starting XI in the 4-1 win and will also be under consideration for the armband, while Roman Pavlyuchenko’s goal and assist contribution from the bench will perhaps cast doubts over Aleksandr Kerzhakov’s starting role, after the latter missed seven chances to find the net last Friday.

For the co-hosts, Robert Lewandowski will be looking to get amongst the goals once again, after notching in Poland’s opening day clash with Greece. Jakub Blaszczykowski provided an assist against the Greeks and will be in the mix, while Ludovic Obraniak’s set-piece duties perhaps boost his chance s of returns.

Elsewhere in Group A, the Czech Republic will perhaps be reliant on the likes of Vaclav Pilar and Jaroslav Plasil to pick up the points again. The former notched his side’s consolation in the Russia defeat, while Plasil bagged an assist after providing seven goalscoring opportunities. Tomas Rosicky’s role in the hole and Milan Baros’ place as the lone forward in a 4-2-3-1 system will also afford the pair a chance to impress.

For Greece, Dimitris Salpingidis’ contribution from the bench in the Poland game may well see him start. A 45 minute second half appearance harvested a goal, with a point also picked up for earning a penalty. Theofanis Gekas and Giorgos Samaras should maintain their roles in the front three, with the creativity of Giorgos Karagounis always liable to provide a spark for Fernando Santos’ side.

    This is interesting.

I just pretended it was a Spain - Germany final, and tried to make a team as if it were a wildcard.

It's difficult to even get a starting XI with a wildcard considering the prices. I can't even imagine how hard it'd be with 4 transfers in the semi finals.

Very tempted to save that wildcard for the final now. Here's what it'd look like if it were a Germany - Spain final.

    Casillas
    Alba, Ramos, Boateng, Hummels, Badstuber
    Iniesta, Alonso, Fabregas
    Gomez, Podolski

Subs all 4.0 and it JUST makes budget.

That's not great at all, and I'd need the wildcard to get all those 4.0s even though I intend to have at least 3 going into the QF stage including a keeper.

I have a feeling I'm going to be up all night planning my QF team...

        Yes.

But it still doesn't come out well. I think it's virtually impossible to get a full XI for the final without taking a hit. You would tend to pick players from the big teams expecting to progress and their starting XIs are all very pricy. German midfield in particular is ludicrously overpriced.

So what happens, is that you pick the big players, and if they get through, you're constrained by budget so have to take hits to balance the books. If they don't get through, you don't have enough of the underdog players to get a full team out with just 4 transfers.

It is indeed tricky. Would saving the W/C really make up for what you could get earlier?

It's the sort of gamble either way that looks good or grim depending if you're lucky with your players. I'm still not decided what to do.

As the prices haven't changed that much they become less of a consideration.

Even if they didn't change once, it'd still be difficult. Ultimately, I think we'll have to allow 0.5m minimum to the transfers we plan to make to accommodate price changes.

Saving the WC for the final indeed allows a lot more flexibility. It's a gamble though, because if there's an upset, you're in the money and can wildcard in the best players. But if you guess the finalists correctly, it could end up saving you only a few points.

I guess it depends on how confident you are on who's going to make it through. If there are upsets, and you get it wrong i.e. a Group A team makes the semis or final, saving that WC could be worth a lot.

Either way, it'll get you a starting XI where others wouldn't have one though.

                Yeah.

I think my decision may hinge on my standing in the FFS cup. If me and Jonty make it through to the knockout rounds by winning the next match, I'll hold onto my wildcard. If not, I'll use it to get a leg up for GW 3.

Did you factor in the extra 5 million you get for the QF? Otherwise, similar situation to the CL game. I had to max out on 4.0 Apoel players to have a decent starting lineup.

I think you are thinking far ahead - Spain doesnt look a team to go to the final for me at least. If they win, they will face england or france in the quarters and if they win that game, they will face most likely either netherlands or portugal - as of now, if germany and portugal get a result this matchday, I can see Portugal in the semis on one side of the bracket. My prediction is Portugal France, In which case, just need cr7 nani oliveira portugal defenders and goalie and any portuguese mids. IF spain Germany final, everyone will be in same boat so I wouldnt sweat it if I were you. Much more points can be made with a good wildcard use now than can for a 2-1 final with 1 goal from torres 1 from xabi alonso and 1 from khedira. Dont sweat it.

I think it doesn't make that much difference as to who gets through, you're still presented with the same problems.

Fact is, you have to tip at least one team to get through in the quarters to not only score well, but to have the requisite number of players. The problem is, if you tip a team in the quarters to do well, you open yourself to being wrong and needing too many transfers to field a team.

its all up to luck, benzema plays ukraine whos defense seems worse than denmarks. Portugal don't seem to have that final touch but ronaldo looks really deadly. I'd bet on Ronaldo just cause messi scored a hat trick this week, and most probably he'd try to one up him =P Thats why I'd pick Ronaldo cuz of his EGO

Was screwing around and found this combo:

    Andersen, Neuer
Ramos, Hubnik, lescott, Maniatis, Beretzutski (Avoids all yellows from Alba and Maggio)
    Iniesta, Nasri, Pirlo, Shirokov, Andrews
    Benzema, Salpingidis, CR7

the Catch is you have a 5 striker, any good?? or rather

    Andersen, chalkias (bad keepers)
Alba, Hubnik, lescott, Maniatis, Maggio (yellows)
    Iniesta, Nasri, Pirlo, Shirokov, Andrews
    Benzema, lewandowski, CR7

        It's worse than that.

2 yellows in any of the group stage matches AND the quarter finals nets you a one-game suspension.

So if Maggio who's on a yellow picks up a yellow in the quarters, he's suspended for the semis.

Benzema didn't have many chances yesterday and stayed out of the box most of the time and play short passes, is this how he always plays for France? Do hope that he can score against weaker defence!

Very tempted to pick Ox as a nice cheap differential. If it looks like he's on the way out when Rooney returns can always transfer him, lots of replacements at that price.

    Alreet lads

Very consistent scoring from holland in the first match. Myself and Flynn both posted a pretty meh 45 points, but 90 points would have been enough to see us past Germany and Portugal. Pity we had to come up against Denmark!

How do they work out the scoring in the groups? If teams are tied for on results, do they look at points difference in the match ups (bad) or total points (good).

the general feeling is we just don't know, other than Robben (and if fit Sneijder) are nailed on to start. One or both of RvP or Afellay may sit.

Here's something for the dead (zone)

    a)
    chalkias, ANDERSEN
    LESCOTT, MAGGIO, debuchy, alba, perquis

    b)
    chalkias, HART
    MANIATIS, BONUCCI, debuchy, alba, perquis

A is tempting, but after a round when my keeper got me 1 point, I'm just not sure......

Am I mental to be considering Wellbeck? I kind of want england attacking coverage against two of weakest defenses in the competition, and young is a bit expensive (and will only be OOP for one more game). I thought wellbeck did ok yesterday. Will he keep his place?

ok folks, I like the looks of this

    Chalkias, Andersen

    Lescott, Debuchy, Alba, Coentrao, Hubnik

    Alonso, Pirlo, Madzukic, Dzagoev, Pilar

    Benzema, Gomez, Lewandowski

Alonso worries me, but he's the best I can afford from Spain, but he is on pens and some fks, plus there is possible rb points

looked a decent goal threat and got 16rbs. Anyway in these FFS UEFA comps my partner has Selassie, so I have Hubnik. Spreading the coverage.

Don't like the double England defence, and Fab is not nailed on, Del Bosque says he may keep things as they are or he may draft in a striker. IMO, swap Lescott for Berezutski

He got plenty of shots v Croatia, but that was mainly as they stood off and let him shoot, Spain and Italy will not be as generous. Pilar is a much better bet

Can someone convince me that pilar is a good option? dint really notice him apart from the goal.. he playin high up the pitch? lots of shots etc? Andrews had 4 shots if i'm not mistaken.. course 2 pts is the max he's gonna get next 2 games

Pilar plays as an attacking winger. Major reason he wasn't noticed was because Czechs was on the backfoot for most of the game, this will not be the case v Greece or Poland,

He's a good up and coming player. Off to Wolfsburg at 23 years of age. Playing an attacking wide role, and they need to win.
