The out-of-position midfielders stood out yet again in the third day of Euro 2012 action. Cesc Fabregas notched for Spain in the 1-1 draw with Italy, while Mario Mandzukic bagged a brace for Croatia as Slaven Bilic’s men got their Group C campaign off to the perfect start against Republic of Ireland…

Spain 1 Italy 1
Vicente Del Bosque sprung a major surprise by handing Cesc Fabregas the chance to lead the line and fielding a side without a recognised forward in yesterday evening’s match against Italy. The former Arsenal man, classified as a midfielder in the McDonald’s game and priced at 8.5, rewarded his manager’s faith by notching the equaliser before making way for Fernando Torres. El Nino hardly boosted his chances of a first-team place with another lacklustre display, missing a couple of straightforward chances to grab the three points for the defending champions.

Andres Iniesta started on the left of the front three and was his side’s main goal threat, firing five attempts, while David Silva begun on the opposite flank and provided the assist for Fabregas’ goal just minutes after his side went behind. Up next for Del Bosque’s side is a game against Republic of Ireland on Thursday and, with many Fantasy managers ready to wield their group stage wildcard ahead of Matchday two, plenty will be loading up on Spain’s assets for a match they will be expected to win comfortably. The result also means Spain can ill-afford rest and rotation over their final two games, meaning Del Bosque could well decide not to gamble on many of his fringe players as he looks to clinch a place in the knockout stages.

Cesare Prandelli changed systems after a 3-0 friendly defeat by Russia and rolled out a 3-5-2 formation for the Spanish showdown. Roma midfielder Daniel De Rossi started at the back and was flanked by Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci, while Christian Maggio – who is classified as a defender in the McDonald’s game – started on the right of the midfield five. Elsewhere in midfield, Prandelli handed Emanuele Giacherrini (priced at 5.5 in the McDonald’s game) his debut for the national side on the left, while Thiago Motta was the furthest forward of the five.

Mario Balotelli fluffed his lines when handed a gilt-edged chance to score for the Azzurri; with replacement Antonio Di Natale finding the net just three minutes after climbing off the bench, Balotelli’s starting role for Thursday’s showdown with Croatia could well be under threat. Similar to Spain, Fantasy faith in Italy will be strong for their final couple of group games, with 8.0 priced Antonio Cassano perhaps affording the safest route into the Azzurri’s frontline; given that he has just 1.5% ownership, the Milan forward could prove to be a strong differential.

Republic of Ireland 1 Croatia 3
Giovanni Trapattoni’s side had chalked up 11 clean sheets in their previous 14 matches prior to last night’s opener but were no match for a rampant Croatia. The Republic of Ireland boss rolled out his expected starting XI with Kevin Doyle partnering Robbie Keane up top, but it was 4.0 priced Keith Andrews who was his side’s main goal threat, with seven attempts over the 90 minutes. Sean St Ledger grabbed the goal and picked up an eight point return in the McDonald’s game, with six recovered balls also boosting his score. Aiden McGeady’s set-piece duties helped the winger to an assist after St Ledger nodded home his free-kick but with Spain and Italy up next, many Fantasy managers will be shipping out their Irish contingent and looking elsewhere for alternatives.

There were many question marks against Slaven Bilic’s starting lineup prior to last night’s kick-off. In the end, the Croatia boss opted for Darijo Srna and Ivan Strinic at full-back and rolled out a midfield diamond, affording both a chance to bomb forward. Srna’s Fantasy owners will be somewhat frustrated, though; classified as a midfielder and coming in at 7.5, a move back from his usual place on the right of midfield lessens his appeal, though he still managed three shots and, having created two goalscoring opportunities, picked up an assist. Strinic, on the other hand, looks a decent squad-filler as a 4.0 defender option in the McDonald’s game after getting the nod ahead of Danijel Pranjic.

Ivan Rakitic and Ivan Perisic started on the right and left of the diamond respectively, with Luka Modric playing in a more advanced central position. Rakitic had four shots – the most of any Croatia player, while Mario Mandzukic rewarded the 1.3% of Fantasy who snapped up his services by bagging a double and a 13 point return in the McDonald’s game. Classified as a midfielder yet playing up front, Mandzukic proved an outstanding out-of-position candidate and made a mockery of his 6.0 price tag, while Nikica Jelavic also got amongst the goals. Coming in at a mere 5.0, the Everton forward is the second most popular forward in the McDonald’s game with over 34% ownership but, with those Spain and Italy clashes to follow, he – like Mandzukic – may struggle to replicate his returns.

    Morning all!

    FANTASY PRO LEAGUE QUESTION

Having trouble getting my head around transfers...

    1) Can we only bid for the free agents, or can we bid for players who others own already?
    2) And if so, would we then have to bid for our own players to ensure we keep them?
    3) Do we just 'release' the players we want to get rid of?
    4) If so, what if we release but are unsuccessful in a bid, then we wont have a squad of 15...

Sorry for all the questions, I don't think it is very clearly explained on the site itself.

Moring GO, I see you're 5th and I'm 15th in the BUG league, oviously we didn't get in the cup as our combined skill wouldn't have been fair on the other competitors 😉

Don't know the answers to your questions, and I agree the site is confusing and a pain in the arse.

Yeah, I guess we would be doing pretty well in the comp if we had made it in....shame!

I think you have to release your own players, then only bid for free agents. then at the designated transfer window, it will work like the bidding stages with continuous rounds untill everyone has a full team. I'm not sure though.

          I'm OK thanks

We would have been on 100pts now, I think that would have seen us beat most in the competition.

Even if Given didn't touch it, it still would've rolled across the line.

I am with you. The ball would have gone in if Given hadn't touched it.

If it had been headed out of the goal when Given touched it it would have been different, but it wasn't. It was credited correctly.

    RMT

    Chalkias, Andersen
Alba, Kyriakos, Lescott, Gebre Selassie, Debuchy
    Özil, Young, Iniesta, Shirokov, Perisic
    Benzema, Arshavin, Cassano

    My thought process:
Having been burnt by Szczesny and having an expensive GK (Lloris) on the bench, I feel like it is the wisest move not to invest to heavily in that position. This may be superstitious, but I think I am pretty set there. Would like to have to Russian goalkeeper, but I pass due to the uncertainty related to Akinfeev's knee.

Alba was looking good offensively and I do not think Ireland can score on Spain. Feels like a good choice. Love Kyriakos as a player and he may be worth the extra 0.5 over Maniatis due to his goal scoring abilities. Would fancy having a Greek defender as I think that the game against the Czechs will be low scoring, hence the inclusion of Gebre Selassie who was the best Czech player with Pilar in their loss. Lescott seems to be a popular choice, but as a Swede it hurts to bet against Sweden and our attack is pretty good, so I am open to suggestion there. Debuchy is obvious value.

Özil is my fav player and I think he could prove worthy of his hefty price tag. Young has looked great and should trouble both Sweden and Ukraine, even when Rooney returns. Iniesta was Spain's best player and Spain's coming matchups looks great. Shirokov is also great value in the Russian attack and I have been high on Perisic since before the tournament. It hurts, however, to include a Croat since I think they may struggle in the games against both Spain and Italy, but their attack should produce nevertheless.

Benzema is may bet to win the Golden Boot and I think Arshavin will step up and produce some points against Poland. He wouldn't let Dzagoev steal all the spotlight, would he? Could be a great differential. Cassano looked healthy and I fancy Italy's chances.

Would love to have two Germans on the fied, but I still think highly of Holland's attack after their lost the game against the Danes on bad finishing. Feel kinda bad doubling on England though.

    Suggestions?

And a question, when is the deadline for WCing with the original prices?

    Thanks in advance!

      I really like it.
Would probably go Maniatis for the greeks still OOP and all that.

Any ideas how I can spend the 0.5 I get from downgrading?

I am aware of my bias, but the clean sheets are so hard to predict imo so I may as well take my chances with cheap goalies. This naturally allows me to get a strong team with outfield players. I like Chalkias chances in the game against the Czechs though.

I am in fact not sure that Di Natale will start. With his knee problems, I think he may be best suited as a sub. Balotelli did some great underestimated work pressuring the Spaniards as well, so I think he may get one additional chance as a starter.

I also really like having two Russian attackers.

Do not like the choices of Afellay or Podolski either. Both failed to impress and I think there is a distinct possibilty that Afellay does not start against Germany.

Jumping Ahead but what would be the best transfer strategy from QF's > Final?

Im guessing the sensible approach is:

QF: You select 2 players from each team leaving 8 progressing to SF's
SF: You select 4 players form each team leaving 8 progressing to final
F: Use 4 free transfers to field starting 11.

Or do you take a punt and use more players from stronger teams @ each stage?

Only asking the question as not played any tournament FF before, the point is to keep a full starting 11 in both the semis & final.

If you were to choose 4 players from say 4 sides in the QF's and the worst case happens you could in theory end up with only 8 players in the SF's

If you lucks really out you could end up with only 4 players in the final.

        Sorry for wasting your time!

He had a tonne of chances when he came on though. Thought Spain looked 100 times better with him on. If only he took his chances....

I agree man I thought he looked quality but a week long punt on a "?" is too risky imo

a punt gw 1 is more than enough
he ddnt even get 1 pt as he managed to get a YC
i dnt care if he scores a hatrick he's out for me
and del bosque mentioned that he is very important in certain aspects of the gaem when on counterattack or open game, which is unlikely for spain to face since they keep the ball for hrs

Yep, i've got him. Need someone cheap to afford the big players upfront and he fits the bill nicely. Much better than; Andrews, Polanski e.t.c.

Quite a stretch so say he pays OOP in my opinion. Standard attacking midfielder in a 4-2-3-1.

What do people think of Xabi Alonso as a fantasy pick?

Allows me to get Lewandowski over Jelly.

      Pirlo is a better pick.

Would almost rather have Jelly over Lewandowski straight up.

Alonso appealled to me but mainly because I saw him getting 4-5 points a game form CS and RB points, but against weaker opposition he may not get so many RB points as Spain will most likely dominate posession throughout the game.

If he doesn't get a pen then he might be a waste of money, but I'd far prefer Lewandowski to Jelavic.
