Alan Dzagoev justified his position as leader of the Captain Poll for Matchday 2, Day 1 by notching yet again this evening as Russia drew 1-1 with Poland. Jakub Blaszczykowski grabbed the co-hosts’ equaliser while, in the early kick-off, Vaclav Pilar scored for the second successive game as the Czech Republic bounced back from their 4-1 mauling at the hands of Dick Advocaat’s side in Matchday 1.

Despite a yellow card late in the second half, Dzagoev picked up an extra point due to the recovered balls rule, meaning he – like Pilar – sits on seven points, or 14 with the armband. Blaszczykowski picked up 8 points, or 16 with the armband, and their respective captaincy owners must now decide whether it’s worth sticking with what they have or gambling for more. Looking at tomorrow’s encounters, several options look enticing and we’ve rolled out the Captain Poll for you to have a say.

Portugal square up to Denmark in the early kick-off with Paulo Bento’s side desperate for a win in order to stand any chance of progressing. Cristiano Ronaldo will be heavily backed to open his account tomorrow, while Nani’s 3.7% of owners will be looking for a points return against a side that conceded 27 shots in their group opener.

The Danes already have three points in the bag after downing the Dutch in their opener – can Michael Krohn-Deli follow in the footsteps of Dzagoev and Pilar and notch in back-to-back games or will Nicklas Bendtner rise to the occasion for the Group B underdogs?

The later game could well be one of the showdowns of the tournament. Holland face Germany at 7.45pm with Bert Van Marwijk’s side knowing that if the Danes grab a point in the earlier kick-off, they will need to avoid defeat to keep their chances of making the knockout stages alive. Robin Van Persie had eight shots in the game with Denmark, while Wesley Sneijder created 10 goalscoring opportunities for his team mates – both will be looking to produce the goods, while Arjen Robben and Ibrahim Afellay will add plenty attacking threat against their bitter rivals.

Joachim Low’s first XI is packed full of attacking talent with plenty of options from the bench. Of the likely starters, Mario Gomez will be looking to get amongst the goals once again after nodding home the winner against Portugal, while Mesut Ozil’s creativity and the threat of Thomas Muller and Lukas Podolski from out wide is sure to play a part in what is shaping up to be a scintillating encounter.

The Harry Redknapp rumour is becoming very factual. Saying on Talk Sport that there is a serious rift between Harry and Levy over contracts and Moyes is on Levy's wanted list 🙁

I have a few reasons for why 8 points is a good stick.

        1. 8 points is more than a defender would typically get for a clean sheet. I'd consider 7 points with the RB rule a defenders' score.

        2. It's a total that's difficult to surpass. Notice only Dzagoev, Mandzukic and Shevchenko scored more than 8, and they scored two each.

9 points or more is rare, and guarantees involvement in two goals. I'd rather not gamble on any player with the expectation that they will be involved in two goals.

            Day 1 9-10

All quite reasonable, just wonder if 7 should cut the mustard (as in the current situ). As you say, very few 8+ scores, so for the sake of 2 pt loss, a 7 score reduces risk of (c) switches to 2/3 scorers.

No right or wrong, just trying to come to peace with my own Rusky riddle.

I'll give a reason why for this week 8 pts shouldnt stick.

          1) With Ronaldo vs Denmark, Iniesta v Ireland and Ribery/Benzema vs Ukraine - One of 3 should better that score or in the least equal it. If You were at matchday 2 or 3 I could understand not wnating to lose it, but look at what you have to gain vs what you have to risk.

          Captain 8 and hold
          Non Captain = 2
          ____________________total 18

          Not captain = 8
          Captain fail = 2
          _______________total 12

this is a 6 point risk

          Not Captain 8
          Captain success = 13
          ____________________total 31

You are only risking 6 points with a potential for 13 and a high liklihood that in next 2 days, one of captains will at least match the 8

            You did the math wrong.

8+13 = 21. You risk 6 points to gain 3. Not worth it.

7 points on the under hand is an even risk.

Risk 5 to gain 6 if you take 13 as a strong score. It'll probably be less than that, but still a fair gamble.

But you also neglected something else.

If you didn't twist you'd have two scores of 8 and 13 not 8 and 2.

                So 8x2 = 16 + 13 = 29. So you potentially gain 5 points.

I was wrong, you don't potentially gain 3, but 5. Still less than 6 though 😛

But Im not comparing those two scenarios - Yes I will only gain 5 pts if later on someone hits 13, but it is difficult to determine the probability of each event. All I am saying is worst case scenario, you lose 6 pts, and in a good scenario, you will gain 5 pts. But what is the probability of each. If you wanted to bet with me that neither Ronaldo/Iniesta/or Benzema will score at least 8 pts, I would take that bet any day at even money, which is what we are basically paying. You are taking 13 pts as the max, but truth be told, I wouldnt be horribly shocked if 1 of those broke 13 points. If I had only 1 captain choice this week, it would be Benzema - so I am not going to settle for 8 pts prior to reaching him because I think he could outscore that in the first half and could end up with a hat trick giving him 14 points. Iniest could easily bad a goal and a couple assists. thats 14 points with a clean sheet and no RB's. GW 1, the games were more difficult - and now teams need to score and win. At this stage, sticking to an 8 pt captain on day 1 of Matchday 2 is very foolish to me.

If you are looking for a good score and just to be middle of the pack, stick with 8 - If you want to win you have to go for better as there will definitely be many that had the 13 point captain matchday 1 and will have an above 10 captain this matchday - If you want to be one of those guys, switch captain - if you are just looking to place nicely and happy with that, then stick with 8.

                    Fair points.

I guess it depends on what you would consider a good score. I think 8 in this game is a pretty good score. And for me, with the risk greater than the potential reward, it's hard to justify switching captains.

Sticking with Shirokov (c) in match day 1 was one of my few good decisions.

One last thing before I sleep - for the Order of Extreme Valour, for fairness' sake, we're defining what a differential is so it's not subjective.

Players selected by a maximum of 10% of participating managers (3 from 32) will be considered.

Hope you agree that's sensible, otherwise we'd be buried in bandwagons...

Tricky one. Danes allowed 27 (Twenty Seven) shots v Holland, yes they played well defensively, but were also very lucky.
Id (c) Ronaldo you only need 2 assists or 1 goal and 5 rb's

too early in competition for that - go for the jugular - Ronaldo on Pks if they score three, Ronaldo may be involved in all of them even 2 assists = that total but 2 goals and an assist and he will be at 13

Also, If you had only 1 captain choice this week who would it be? For me, would be 1 of Benzema or Ribery - So unless I get a 10 pt captain prior to that Game, I will keep trying. The worst thing that can happen in this competition in my opinion is getting an ok score for captain in first round. You figure you will keep it, but everyone else who didnt captain that player will continue. Then a player a couple days later scores a hat trick and everyone but you has them as captain. That is why I say that if you had only 1 captain choice, who would it be and what would you expect. If you didnt get that amount already, keep switching.

Here's a little captaincy theory to back up my decision that 8 points should be a stick.

    Take 2 theoretical scores.
    2 points - a captain fail
    13 points - a captain win

Here's what you gain and lose if you switch your captain starting from:
    2 points - risk 0, gain 11
    3 points - risk 1, gain 10
    4 points - risk 2, gain 9
    5 points - risk 3, gain 8
    6 points - risk 4, gain 7
    7 points - risk 5, gain 6
    8 points - risk 6, gain 5
    9 points - risk 7, gain 4 etc....

Look where the cut off is where you risk more than you gain...

Both your theory and Natas's theory of one captain choice are interesting... I wish I could get 20+ (after double) from my captain, but I think I probably go safe way and keep Dzagoev with 14 points for now. If I still lead the league after MD2 Day3, I would stick with him. Otherwise, Nasri or Benzema will be welcome for armband.

Sure, but you can always amend it based on what you would consider a captain win. Would 12 points be considered a worthwhile gamble? Would 10? Would only 14 convince you it was the right choice beyond a shadow of a doubt?

That's where your risk taking comes into play. But roughly, those are pretty good gauges.

Those numbers are just simply fixed to fit the bill. What if I think a captain win is 20 points? The gain would be skyhigh, and the risk low. But this doesn't say anything about the probability for it to happen. Neither would it give me a better score in the game. And that's ehat we all are about. 8 is a good, safe option as it only requires a player to score one goal. But scoring a single goal is quite usual for the better strikers in the game. A better way to find out how riskful your investment is, is to look at the odds for a player to score, and then find out how likely it is that none of your eventual captains score. The exact probability for a player to get 8 points in the game is too complex to find out.

It's usual for RVP to score goal. But, on a certain day, he could fail to score too. There are risks. Anyway, it's a game.. Choose the way you will enjoy most. 🙂

Not really. They are likely to sit very deep, which denies Torres space to race past the lines. The Irish will fancy themselves in the air, so deep it is.

Not great. Around 45,000k after today's games. But hopeful nonetheless!

Hi, long time lurker first time poster here. Taking things more seriously than usual since I've fluked my way into the top 60 overall. Can you only sub players the day after they play, or can it be any time before their replacements play? Cheers

Once the games have finished and the game has updated, then you can make your substitutes. Good flukery, gl with the remainder of the competition.

Ah yeah I get that, sorry I wasn't very clear. My subs are all English and French players, and I have three players who flopped today, but it's possible some of my other players will flop harder in the intervening games if you follow. Do I have to make the subs before tomorrow's games to get today's players out, or can I wait until before the England/France games?

                Haha. My advice:

                1) Have very little European football knowledge
                2) Read the (excellent) articles on here to find out of position players
                3) Pick them
                4) Pick other players with good fixtures
                5) Pick Lescott due to massive forehead's goalscoring potential

Truly I am a fantasy sage right 😛

                  6) watch as many games as possible to get a feel for player form.

I kind of fancy the Danes to keep them to a low score myself to be honest. But they did play some nice ball against Germany and on paper, well, they're one of the strongest squads in the competition. Lacking a good CF though.

I thought nani looked much more dangerous against the germans as well, kept ronaldo pretty quite in comparison

I see the attraction of Ronaldo. He's on all set pieces and could easily explode in terms of points. If I owned him, I'd be captaining him for sure. I however, own Mereiles and Bendtner 😛
And will be captaining Muller as was crowing loudly about earlier!!!

haha I do like the muller (punt?) certainly not one of the main german picks but had an incredible world cup for germany and scored in the champs final, good luck with him. I'll be sticking with dzagoev I think

I'm captaining Muller over Ronaldo. Maybe crazy but that left side of the Dutch defense looks really weak.

I knew i should not have logged on tonight in fear of getting confused over twisting off Dzagoev. Reading everyones rationale for twisting is pretty sound, however i just cant pull the trigger.

My options going forward are Ozil>Iniesta or Cassano>Benzema

I have a pretty good rank going. Also in the FFS Friendly World Cup, one of our rivals has Dzagoev (c) and we already have an approximate 20pt lead after 1 day.

    Advice most welcomed!!!

Stick on Dzagoev, without a shadow of a doubt in my opinion. A bird in the hand is better than two in the bush. Sure, anyone of those players might beat his score, but the probability is that they wont. Plus, imagine if you switch it and the player gets sent off!!! Stranger things have happened. Play the percentages I reckon.

Completely agree with this.. There's potential bigger return but with risk. For those who Dzagoev (c), the risk is more.

I know this would've been discussed to death.
But stick or twist with Dzagoev? Other options are Ronaldo, Cassano, Iniesta, Benzema.
    Thanks! 🙂

Not sure. It is tempting, though. Plus I'll have Iniesta and Benzema to fall back on.
If this was the 3rd or 4th day, I would've stuck for sure. Dunno what to do now!

I didn't twist in Matchday 1 when I had Lewandowski, which proved to be correct. Ibra equalled him but RVP & Iniesta failed.

This time around I have CR7, Pirlo, Fabregas, Benzema & Young. I fancy the twist.

I twisted and then bit my nails until Ibra came though....almost failed.

IMHO.....unless you have an excellent midfield captaincy option you should stick. CR7 is the only exception.

    Morning all

Right. Ozil, Affalay or RVP for captain tonight? Currently on Shirokov who scored a whopping deux points...

Last night's games were great but tonight's should be even better. If I was a betting man I'd definitely have money on neither Portugal nor Holland finishing with 11 men. It's going to be fun.

Heh.. I'm in the exact same situation so your post caught my eye (you must not have wildcarded either). I went with Ozil, but I may get the urge to switch to RVP. I'm a big fan of Affellay and would love to see a great performance, but he's certainly riskier.
