Alan Dzagoev justified his position as leader of the Captain Poll for Matchday 2, Day 1 by notching yet again this evening as Russia drew 1-1 with Poland. Jakub Blaszczykowski grabbed the co-hosts’ equaliser while, in the early kick-off, Vaclav Pilar scored for the second successive game as the Czech Republic bounced back from their 4-1 mauling at the hands of Dick Advocaat’s side in Matchday 1.

Despite a yellow card late in the second half, Dzagoev picked up an extra point due to the recovered balls rule, meaning he – like Pilar – sits on seven points, or 14 with the armband. Blaszczykowski picked up 8 points, or 16 with the armband, and their respective captaincy owners must now decide whether it’s worth sticking with what they have or gambling for more. Looking at tomorrow’s encounters, several options look enticing and we’ve rolled out the Captain Poll for you to have a say.

Portugal square up to Denmark in the early kick-off with Paulo Bento’s side desperate for a win in order to stand any chance of progressing. Cristiano Ronaldo will be heavily backed to open his account tomorrow, while Nani’s 3.7% of owners will be looking for a points return against a side that conceded 27 shots in their group opener.

The Danes already have three points in the bag after downing the Dutch in their opener – can Michael Krohn-Deli follow in the footsteps of Dzagoev and Pilar and notch in back-to-back games or will Nicklas Bendtner rise to the occasion for the Group B underdogs?

The later game could well be one of the showdowns of the tournament. Holland face Germany at 7.45pm with Bert Van Marwijk’s side knowing that if the Danes grab a point in the earlier kick-off, they will need to avoid defeat to keep their chances of making the knockout stages alive. Robin Van Persie had eight shots in the game with Denmark, while Wesley Sneijder created 10 goalscoring opportunities for his team mates – both will be looking to produce the goods, while Arjen Robben and Ibrahim Afellay will add plenty attacking threat against their bitter rivals.

Joachim Low’s first XI is packed full of attacking talent with plenty of options from the bench. Of the likely starters, Mario Gomez will be looking to get amongst the goals once again after nodding home the winner against Portugal, while Mesut Ozil’s creativity and the threat of Thomas Muller and Lukas Podolski from out wide is sure to play a part in what is shaping up to be a scintillating encounter.

Expensive defence wen you only need 2 defenders and clean sheets are rare. Good midfield especially The Ox v Sweden. I,m hoping Benzema does well before the Quarters but that France don't go through!

I was hoping for more from my dzageov/arshavin pairing but I'm hardly complaining 🙂

In some ways a draw was a good result in that it lessens the chance of either being rested for Gw3

ok I don't know if there's anyone on who had Dzagoev (c) like me, but if there is here my take on whether to stick or twist.

So, we know that Dzagoev as (c) delivers 14 points. The question for me is, do I think any of my other options will beat that? Sure the likes of Gomez, CR7, Iniesta, Benzema are all capable of beating in, but what is not what matters.

I also don't buy the argument of, oh well you have 3 more chances so you may as well twist., Why must you? If you have a good captain score that you are happy with and you're not sure if another option is better, then by g-d just stick with the guaranteed points. Anything else is a bonus. Maybe one of your other options will outscore your captain, maybe they won't but do you want to end up in the Lewandowski situation where every captain choice goes wrong, or you rely on a Mandzukic style stroke of luck to get a decent score.

On this basis I'm sticking with Dzag and taking any other points as a bonus. If someone does outscore him, it is just one of those things and at least you have something. Who knows it may even be someone you'd never even considered captaining.

I am sticking. Even if someone scores two (which is unlikely) it is not such a big differnce. I would say it is more likley that if you pick 3 players as a captain that they will score 1 or less than one than they will score more than 1. So I am sticking. If another of my players scores two I will still be happy.

^^this^^^ Unless a guy gets a hat-trick you will not lose out to heavily and I don't see than anyone bar Beznema has that hope, and a hope is not enough to make me switch. All these people who say after the event I knew have captained so and so. No you didn't,it's easy to say that in hindsight, and anyone who did (c) him just got lucky.

I twisted last week with Kuba and was lucky that Jelly scored in the third. I put 5 points on the line and got an extra 2! I could have got more if I'd chosen Mandy (who I also had). I would have scored less if I went with any other player on my team including Iniesta and RVP.

There's an extra two points in it this time and I'm very suspicious of people saying so-and-so will get a hat trick. Only three players got more than 10 points last round an it was the players noone expected.

    Definately leaning towards stick...

It depends on what you think a "best score" is:

For example, if you think that 13 points is the best score a player can get so far, and a player is usually guaranteed 2 points minimum, by switching captains you are:

      Risking 5 points (7 points minus 2) and able to gain 6 (13 points minus 7, which is your current score);

Of course the risks and rewards of your move will depend on your "projection" of the scores. If say you think Ronaldo will score 2 goals, you are risking 5 to gain 2+4+4(which is ronaldo with 2 goals)-7(your current captain score) = 3 points, which is not a very good outlook at all.

So really, it is your pick.

Drawing on the wisdom of the crowds today:

Got Dzagoev as captain so far, this is the rest of the team (that haven't played):

    Andersen Casillas
    Bonucci Debuchy Willems
    Sneijder(C2) Pirlo (C3)
    SIlva Benzema(C4)

Stick or twist? Currently ranked 1655th, on 25 points so far with Pilar, Dza, Maniatis and Shirokov...

sneijder and pirlo are decent but not great captain choices (given their potential/fixtures) benzema could do well but would need more than 1 goal to justify and very unlikey as the first round showed (btw silva should be your day 3 choice by a long shot)

Appreciate the reply, I understand your point of view completely, I picked these players to be "key players" over the next 2 games as I WC'ed this GW...

Why do you think that Silva should be captain by a long shot? I think both are equally likely to get assists, and I believe that Italy would do better against Croatia compared to Spain against Ireland.

They are good on the ball and are a handful in the air.
Don't think Italy will cope. Plus, the croats have a tendency to do well in the big tournaments.

I agree with your points. That is why I invested in them first week, as I was convinced that they would perform against lesser sides.

But wouldn't you give Italy's midfield any credit at all, for patiently allowing Spain possession and counterattacking so efficiently? (Remember, if it weren't for Casillas Italy would've been leading by a lot more by half time)

Also, is it true then that you don't rate Italy's big men at the back as well, considering that both centre-halves and keeper are from Juventus? (I don't rate de Rossi as a centre half, despite what all the articles are saying)

                  Simply put.

                  Spain>Italy
                  Croatia>Ireland

                  Italy = or > Croatia

Hence, Silva could play a hand in more goals.

I would change C3 to Silva

I could see Silva or Benzema outperforming Dzagoev.

      Sticking is boring. Twisting isn't.

Thanks for your input, although I would like to know your argument as to why you think Silva will outperform Dzagoev, despite needing a goal and more (or 2 assists)..

Playing and Ireland side that are vulnerable to pace, do you think Torres will start and Silva will be in a more withdrawn role?

I think Del Bosque will stick to the same team.

I just think Spain are technically way more superior to Ireland and i can see a drubbing here.

Silva could be easily involved in more than his fair share of goals.

Also, i can see Silva getting atleast an assist. You wouln't have given him the precious striker slot upfront otherwise.

I have to admit, the reason I picked Silva was because I didn't have slots for any other attacking player for Spain. Torres isn't guaranteed to start, And if he does Fabregas will be sacrificed, and vice versa.

The toss up between Iniesta and Silva was an interesting one. Due to the fact that my 2 russian midfielders, Pirlo and Sneijder were set in stone, I only had Pilar to play around with. So with the budget constraints (coupled with the fact that I wasn't confident in anyone in the 5.0 striker bracket) I opted for Silva.

Also, even though you and I both are confident that Silva will have a quality game (>6 points), wouldn't Pirlo be in a similar situation? After all, he did play in the attacking tip of the Italian "diamond" and is as likely to get assists (and CS and RBalls bonuses).

Would you have gone for Silva + Pilar (which is paying off so far) or Iniesta + 5.0 forward? (I'm sure Jelavic springs to mind, but I'm sure you know of a better 5.0 forward pound for pound)

I went for fabregas, but that was because i did not use my WC.

In your situation, I would have gone for Iniesta simply because of more value.

But yes, since you were decided on your 4 midfield slots, i would have probably gambled on Silva too. I like the odd different player. Always.

So I had Blaz (c) this week and got 16 points.

I'm not willing to change it since a striker will have to get a goal and an assist to get that. And My other mids are Dzagoev, Pilar, Fab, and Young.

Fab and Young might get there, but it's not worth the risk imo.

    Good choice?

Captain RVP, Afellay or Schweinsteiger tonight?
I kinda fancy Schweinsteiger to get the most points out of the above even though Netherlands really need a win. What do you think?

RVP. Think about it this way:

Schweinsteiger's point sources are assists from midfield and balls recovered,
Afellay are assists from the wing, and RVP gets points from goals.

If you think Schweini can get more points from these compared to RVP (you might have to take a point of your projection because he's yellow card prone) then go with Schweini.

Alternatively, if you rate Holland's midfield to match Germany's, captain RVP.

no, the most asked question today will be:

I have Dzagoev (C). should i stick or twist?

and the answer is: use your own brains. form your own opinion. who do you think will score more points? Dzag or your alternative. not rocket science, is it folks.

In case you did not notice, this post is called "Captain Poll - Matchday Two, Day Two".

You might be surprised, but the poll currently on the front page is dedicated to answering just the question you ask. And not only that, it will also have a large numbers of voters.

After reviewing the poll, and you still can't decide, why don't you go with your gut and take a guess?
