Italy and Spain both go seeking their first wins in Euro 2012 today after playing out a 1-1 draw in last Sunday’s Group C opener. While Vicente Del Bosque’s side have to wait until later tonight before squaring up to Republic of Ireland, the Italians take on group leaders Croatia in the early kick-off and, as usual, we’ve opened up the Dugout Discussion ahead of the 5pm showdown…

The team news is in already and the lineups are as follows:

Italy XI: Buffon; Bonucci, De Rossi, Chiellini; Maggio, Marchisio, Pirlo, Motta, Giaccherini; Cassano, Balotelli.

Croatia XI: Pletikosa; Srna, Corluka, Schildenfeld, Strinic; Rakitic, Modric, Vukojevic, Perisic; Jelavic, Mandzukic

Cesare Prandelli remains faithful to the XI that started the game against Spain. The 3-5-2 system stays intact, then, with Daniel De Rossi once again kept in defence, while right-back Christian Maggio offers Fantasy managers an out-of-position prospect on the right of the midfield five. Up front, Antonio Cassano and Mario Balotelli keep their places, with Antonio Di Natale set to once again play the role of impact sub.

Slaven Bilic’s side is unchanged from the 3-1 win over Republic of Ireland. Darijo Srna is again at right-back, cut-price Fantasy favourite Ivan Strinic (4.0 in the McDonald’s game) remains at left-back, while Luka Modric will keep the more advanced central midfield role against the Italian’s three-man defence. Unsurprisingly, Nikica Jelavic and Mario Mandzukic maintian their places up front after notching all of the goals against Ireland between them.

          Yep, Cox dropping into the middle to help deal with the Spaniards in the middle and Robbie playing lone striker. I think Cox is actually good but Keane should be gone. I'd be playing Walters and Long, have Cox dropped to attacking centre and McLean on the wing instead of McGeady. We NEED to attack. We're not good enough for the defensive game, if we attack we have a chance. If we had attacked against Croatia we could have won. Trap won't listen to reason though.

            I agree but I'd keep McGeady, I'd probably play Gibson ahead of Whelan too.

              Definitely play Gibson ahead of Whelan. Really am not fond of McGeady, struggling at the Russian club level. Fast and technically gifted but never puts the head up to take a look. Either way though, the team could be a hell of a lot better than what it is.

        Its because Germany and Austria in the 1982 World Cup stopped playing as they knew the result at the time would suit both of them so ever since the final pair of group matches always start at the same time

            Not quite Beric, but coming soon (split/multi-screen tech on its way). PVR = personal video recorder, a digital hard drive, as in Sky Plus box, or you can buy them separately. Pretty handy with a decent EPG, or electronic programme guide.

          Howdy Spikey old chap. Yeah, pick your friends, family, terminal illness, but not your footie team. On Droopy, I assume. Not terribly upset, I was never a complete convert and I think there has been plenty of times when tactics/selections have been questionable.

          This has obviously been planned for a while so I expect Daniel has already got his ducks lined up, and my suspicion is that he'll punt on possibly AVB. He definitely wants a return to the manager/dir footie structure, and Droopy simply won't play ball on that.

          Wait and see, but it doesn't help that we need quite a bit of work up front this summer, so I hope things move along briskly.

              Tch tch, that doesn't add value to the Tottenham master plan. How would you fill a 55k stadium with West Ham's team? 🙂

              Ade was always unlikely but still not out of the question, Levy's had talk with him and Citeh. Bale & DVD stay, simple as that. Neither is desperate to leave and are on good, long contracts. Moddy, hmm. That's a bit tougher because of last summer. That he accepted his fate then and got on with things to have another very good season speaks volumes for the lad, but Levy may feel expecting the same again is too much.

              But importantly, I don't see Levy selling within the Prem, that would be hugely counter-productive. There's hope Spikes, there's hope. 😉

          I'll be honest, I see Spain scoring a lot. If we go defensive (as we always do thanks to Trap) they'll out pass us and make a show of us. We won't score either unless he actually gets us to play some attacking football. I'd still be very surprised if Spain don't get out of the group but that awful game against Croatia may have done it for us.

      HH, I like him. He's a bit spikey but in a good way. Doesn't make particularly eye-opening comments, but he does largely say it as it is... ie, England won't get anywhere if they can't keep and pass the ball.

      See what I mean? Pulling up no trees, but to the point.
