We’ve been spoiled so far this summer. After 12 consecutive days of football which have harvested 24 games, Euro 2012 is taking a rare day off tomorrow before the knockout stages begin on Thursday evening at 7.45pm. As Group A winners Czech Republic ready themselves to take on Portugal in the first of the quarter finals, we’ve rolled out the Captain Poll for you to have your say:

Michal Bilek’s side arrive in strong form for Thursday’s game. Written off by many after a 4-1 opening day defeat to Russia, back-to-back wins propelled them to the top of Group A, with Vaclav Pilar and Petr Jiracek the main protagonists. Between them, the midfielders have scored all of their nation’s goals, notching a couple apiece, and look the main threat to Paulo Bento’s favourites. Michal Kadlec’s penalty duties and Milan Baros’ role as the lone forward means they cannot be overlooked, while the creativity of Tomas Rosicky (if fit) and Jaroslav Plasil is likely to provide their team mates with opportunities against a defence that conceded in all of their group games.

Cristiano Ronaldo looks almost certain to be the main man for a Portugal side that has also won the last two games. After a poor couple of performances, the Real Madrid man exploded into form against Holland, scoring twice and hitting the woodwork on a couple of occasions. Nani has provided an assist in each of the last two matches and has been somewhat unlucky not to find the net thus far, Helder Postiga’s guaranteed starting role has already seen him notch once, while Pepe’s threat from the back has seen him accrue 13 points, just one less than Ronaldo in the group stages.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

I know its risky but I think its worth a gamble if spain and germany took their clean sheets I would be over the moon, and the probability of one of the 5 defenders scoring is also high and I think it is time to start to gamble.

    Alreet lads

There was a guy on here last night (sisqo or something like that), and he had a crazy idea to pick Nelson Oliviera as your third striker. I thought the guy was mental at first, now I'm not so sure. He costs 4.5m, so you would be very much expecting him to end up on your bench, but then portugal are up against the czechs, and the guy has played at least 20 mins in ALL 3 games. If the game goes to extra time he will have more than an hour on the pitch!! He would be a major punt, and you might as well retire the valour award if it comes off, but if it doesn't, no harm done. he plays in the first quarter final, and you will have 10 more expensive outfield player to bring in for him. You can get a very nicely balanced team if you have 1 cheapie in each position.

The thing that is putting me off is that there are more decent expensive forward options, than midfield options, so I might go for two cheap starting midfielders instead (pilar + ?). Problem is, you would want a sub 5 million player to fill that slot in preparation for the final, and I can't find any midfield options with the points potential of oliviera.

Am I mad to be even considering it?

you aren't mad 😛 but as you said the points are coming from the forwards and defense most of the time except for dzagoev and pilar and mandzukic and ou have already 2 out of 3 strikers that almost everyone will have : gomez and ronaldo as for the third you can go with oliviera but if he doesn't perform you will back him up with a midfield or defender which i doubt is as rewarding.

as for cheap defenders and if you are looking for a differential instead of oliviera think of navas in the same way played 20 min in each of the 3 first add extra time and you have yourself 50 min during which navas will fly by his opponents.

      hope it helps

Cheers. But Navas costs 2m more, and you wouldn't start him in the final anyway (no subs) so he would be a waste on your bench. I think you need to have 4 sub 5 million players on your bench by the time you get to the final. Ideally 4m, but Pilar is ok for 5m as he has good points potential.

I think the striker slots are too valuable and too few to gamble. Nani would be the riskiest I would get, but I still can't see myself leaving Ronaldo out of my team.

That's another thing, oliviera would mean doubling up on portugual attack which is a big risk in itself. Wouldn't go into the semis without Ronaldo.

Fortounis is an option a lot of people are considering. I think he has a chance of starting considering Karagounis is suspended. He would free a lot of funds and maybe he will just get 2 points but I think that's more than Oliviera can grab. I think writting off the czechs is a mistake, they would give the Portuguese a hard time

You know what, that could be genius, but not right now.

      For the semis.

I didn't even know there was that option at 4.5! Portugal if they get through play first as well, so he'll be a good player to have just to see if he picks something, anything up at all.

Do you really fancy France against Spain that much? Diarra is going to have a busy game and he could get a yellow card, he would get 3 or 4 points at best. Also a clean sheet for france looks unlikely. I'd get rid of diarra for Pilar. Maybe downgrade Debuchy to limbersky or selassie, and use the extra money upgrading nasri to schweinsteiger.

Unless you're gonna wildcard it's a tad risky signing cheap greeks (Greaps!) cos your players in remaing two games could end up in the semis suspended or injured and hamper your 8 transfers. But it's a stroke of genius spotting you can still buy Greaps up until the final whistle of the Germany game.

That's what I'd do, but then I am also in need of advice on my own team, so who knows. If you weren't in the deadzone you might get a wider range of ideas...

I'm pretty sure CR7 is considered mandatory as is some form of spanish attack. Some are putting the rest of their money in the backs and compromising in the mids, others are going the opposite.

I like the idea of having an all german/spanish defense because I don't fancy chances of guessing who will be the goal scorer, but points are guaranteed if you can get a clean sheet. Worth a shot 🙂

Maniatis will get negatives for conceding goals. But really can't see any of them getting more than 2.

I am going with both Gerrard & Pirlo and leaving Iniesta & Ozil because both the teams have too many attacking players who will share the attacking points.

you need to fix that! you dont want to be wasting a transfer later getting in a new gk. get a gk you think will make it to the finals. (probalby casillas or neuer). and then worst case they get knocked out you just downgrade them whereas you will have to make extra transfers to upgrade one of your gk after they get knocked ou

    Final standings GROUP B

    6 Denmark +29
    6 Germany +3
    6 Netherlands -32
    0 Portugal

Netherlands only 6 points away from going through. Nasri & Benzema scoring for example.
Portugal slightly further behind - 15 points off (7+8). Ribery & Gerrard/Young doing something would have sufficed.

      Correction:
For Netherlands a Ribery goal + another point from somewhere.
For Portugal a Ribery brace and Gerrard/Young sharing a goal.

I thought it had been decided that goal difference in our fixture didn't count in the event of a holland win? Denmark lost to germany by 6 points. So a captain ribery goal for light knight would have been enough to draw the game and send us through! But now i'm not sure. It did get very complicated!!

On a third look, you are right!

In fact, a mere Ribery assist would have seen you through.

However we would have gone through had Ribery and Gerrard both scored, the latter assisted by Young!

        Bonkers.

            Of course! Very nice.

Everything I've written is based on that in case of a 3 team tie, only the goals scored in the three games between the teams are considered.

Final internal GD in case of three teams on 6pts:
            Denmark +29
            Germany +3
            Netherlands -32

Final GD in case of 3pts tie (did not happen, but included for argument's sake):
Netherlands +3 minus whatever margin Portugal won by
            Germany +2
Portugal -5 plus the same margin

I.e. in case of POR/DEN wins last night,
NED would have been through if POR only won by 1pt (most scored points)
GER through if POR won by 2pts - 6pts (GER best GD +2)
POR through if we won by 7pts or more

at least that's how I figure it to be

But Selassie is involved in almost every attacking move of Czech. Don't want to lose out on his attacking return, since I know Portugal won't keep a CS.
And now I am thinking is Nani better than Cassano? Cassano has a greater chance of scoring more points, no?

I'm not sure schweinsteiger is worth the money, He has scored well up to now, but that doesn't change the fact that he is essentially a defensive midfielder. He should be priced in the Gerrard/ Pirlo range.

Other than that, it looks good. Very similar to mine (see below)

I'm going all in on the german defence. They play the greeks so definitely have the best chance of a clean sheet in the next round. Then play england who will always struggle to score. I take it you don't enjoy a good double or treble on defenders with good fixtures in fpl?

Remember that I have already got 4 bench players, so for this team I need a cheaper starting player. i would need 1.5m to upgrade cabeye to pirlo.

Not really any suitable defensive downgrades, now that debuchy plays spain!!

I would only make 1m on downgrading Torres - Wellbeck, and I think Cabeye + Torres has much more points potential than Pirlo + Wellbeck anyway

My toon bias served me well in fpl. Had Dave and Barfa for the whole of their hot streak. Really pushed me up the table! With M'Vila sitting, it gives Cabeye some license to get forward. I reckon he's a much better option than the similar priced mids (busquets, khedira, etc).
