634x258 Euro 2012

If you handed the armband to Xabi Alonso tonight, you need not bother with the “stick or twist” dilemma. The Spain midfielder returned the highest individual score so far in EURO 2012, with two goals, a clean sheet and five recovered balls helped him to a staggering 28 point captaincy haul. For the rest of us, though, there’s still plenty to ponder over.

In truth, tonight was a disappointment. The top four in our Captain Poll – David Silva, Andres Iniesta, Fernando Torres and Cesc Fabregas – all failed to pick up any attacking returns, with Torres’ owners left frustrated after he was omitted from the first XI by Vicente Del Bosque. France were woeful and offered little going forward – after all the pre-tournament hype, they grabbed just three goals over their four matches and limp home after a lacklustre performance. Time to contemplate tomorrow’s options, then, as we rundown the likely armband contenders.

Italy will be reliant on Andrea Pirlo to continue the superb form he produced over the three Group C games. The Juventus midfielder was the only player to produce attacking returns in all of the Azzurri’s matches and is by far their top scorer in the McDonald’s game, with 19 points accrued. Antonio Cassano is the only forward to start every match so far and will arrive in confident form, having broken his scoring duck in the previous encounter against Republic of Ireland. Mario Balotelli impressed in a brief sub appearance against Giovanni Trapattoni’s troops with a superbly taken finish and could replace Antonio Di Natale in the first XI, while Thiago Motta may flourish in a role in “the hole” if Cesare Prandelli continues with his 4-3-1-2 system.

For England, Steven Gerrard has been the main protagonist – similar to Pirlo, he has also produced the goods in all three of his appearances and, with 18 points on the board, leads the way for Roy Hodgson’s side. Wayne Rooney announced his return from suspension by nodding home the only goal in the win over Ukraine and will carry the hopes of plenty Fantasy managers – with just 8.2% ownership, he could prove a decent differential tomorrow evening. Danny Welbeck offers a mid-price armband alternative to his United team mate up front, while Ashley Young is afforded the perfect opportunity to prove his worth on the left flank, after a below-par tournament thus far.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

i guess it depends who makes it on between england and italy i'll have to see... not sure if i really rate either to score against germany though.

will also depend if we learn anything about who will start up front for germany. if we have any info that could change things

will pick from portugal/spain players depending on lineups, have a few of both already - thinking right now to sell ronaldo to free up funds

planning to max on out on germany, possibly sell gomez as well to free up funds and make up the rest of the squad from england/italy bargains

think i can get 14/15 players out that way. should have a strongish defence, and will keep ozil/iniesta but the front line will be a gamble

Just to let ya know tonight's killed off my knockout cup tie, as I'm trailing 48-53 with Pirlo to play and he has Pirlo, Lescott, Abate and Rooney left to play. I'm the one still without a decent captaincy so I'll stick it on Pirlo I guess, but barring an absolutely horrible day for England (which I don't really want to see) the tie is over. The ride was good while it lasted and a lot of fun! Would play again!

So now I'm free to say without reservations come on England! (And Denmark, we're leading Russia 107-79?!!)

What noises? Klose played due to the opponent. That will change in the semis imo

He has basically said he was very happy with the players that came in, that the attack had needed to be freshened up and they looked very dangerous. That to me indicates Klose will start, as Light Knight has pointed out, Klose is much more mobile than Gomez.

The strategy I can see is to heavily back one team to progress (Germany) and hedge in the second match so you can field XI.

Here, you're stuck if one of Spain or Germany don't get through, whereas the other strategy only gets you stuffed if Germany doesn't make it.

          I provided my reasoning...

If Spain don't make it, he's royally stuffed, and if Germany don't he's got to use all 4 transfers on getting his Germans out.

If you fully back Germany with 5 players, then hedge on Spain and Portugal with 4 and 3 players respectively, you can replace Spanish or Portuguese players for a full XI in the final.

we have Pirlo and Gerrard x2, Rooney, Balotelli and Balzeretti

You have Lescott x 2, Marchisio, Rooney, Gerrard and Pirlo

So you cancel out 1 Gerrard one Pirlo and Rooney.

I am definitely sticking now. I'd be happy with a 20 points from a striker (c) but from a defender, even better. 😀

Did you really need persuading? Alba clean sheet = more likely than Busquet attacking or insane RBs return so he was always likely to score higher, assist was a cherry on top.

Safest option for 3/4 points is Gerrard IMO

Lescott will probably get 5/6 but could easily be on 2

Gerrard could get 7+ so worth a point I reckon...

thats the kinda punt i like...im sorely tempted as i need to turn this game week around and I am sick of punting on the 'big guns' ronaldo,gomez,iniesta.... only to end up with gerrard letting me down as well (in fairness ronnie didnt let me down too much).

i'll wait for the lineup to make sure but i think i'm gonna do it. wish me luck!!!!

I'm on 55 with Cassano and Gerrard still to play.

Should i sub out my players who scored 3 (Selassie, iniesta, Limbersky) for Welbeck/Lescott who are on the bench or just stick with points scored currently?

    Thoughts people?!?
