Mario Balotelli sends Germany packing with a superb double enough to see off Joachim Low’s favourites and seal a meeting with Spain in Sunday’s final. Antonio Cassano and Riccardo Montolivo also pick up the points with an assist apiece, while Mesut Ozil signs off with converted spot-kick to take his total for the tournament to 25 points:

Italy 2 Germany 1
Cesare Prandelli made a single alteration to his starting XI for last night’s clash. The injured Ignazio Abate dropped out as Giorgio Chiellini returned after missing out against England with a thigh problem – Federico Balzaretti moved over to right-back, with Chiellini slotting in on the opposite flank.

Mario Balotelli grabbed a nine point return for his Fantasy owners after bagging a brace, though it could have been 10 if he hadn’t been cautioned for removing his shirt after hammering home the second. Antonio Cassano produced an assist to take his tally for the tournament to 16 points in the McDonald’s game – priced at 8.5 and 8.0 respectively, they offer strong mid-price options for Fantasy managers willing to bank on Italy finding a way past the Spanish defence. The omens are good; Prandelli’s side are the only team to score against Spain and, with four of Italy’s six goals between them, the strike duo are more than likely to play a part if Vicente Del Bosque’s backline is to be breached again.

In terms of creativity, Andrea Pirlo had a quiet game – the 8.1 priced midfielder provided only one goalscoring opportunity for his team mates last night; Daniel De Rossi was the most impressive with three and, bearing in mind the latter has a current ownership of 1.3%, could be a real differential punt for Sunday. Montolivo’s price tag of 6.9 is sure to pick up suitors after his assist, while Claudio Marchisio offered a decent goal threat after firing off two attempts and comes in at 7.0. At the back, Italy also offer value for those backing a clean sheet, with the likes of Federico Balzaretti and Andrea Barzagli costing 5.4 and 5.9 respectively.

Joachim Low tinkered with his team once again last night, making three changes to the side that defeated Greece 4-2 in the quarter finals. Toni Kroos, Lukas Podolski and Mario Gomez were all handed starting roles though the ploy clearly backfired and, with Italy establishing a 2-0 lead in the first half, the latter two were hauled off after the break for Marco Reus and Miroslav Klose. Germany arrived as strong favourites and were heavily backed by Fantasy managers but only Mesut Ozil produced the goods for his owners after slotting home a late spot-kick. The tournament ended disastrously for Gomez owners, in particular; after finishing the group stages as top points scorer, he managed to muster a total of two points over his last couple of matches.

    zdawg says:

I am 13 points ahead in my ML.

Only really want to take a -3 hit as I think this can be claws back by appearance and RB points.

Realistically looking at only being able to afford 9 players.

    Casillas

    Ramos Alba

    Pirlo Iniesta Fabregas Busquets

    Silva Balo Negrado

    Any other improvements?

Yeah I'm exactly in the same position. 12 points ahead and took a 3 point hit. I can only field 9 players as well.
If I were you I'd pile in the defenders like I did rather than banking on MF/FWD. If it is going to be defensive then there's more points to be had. Someone else wrote a big long explanation earlier about net gain/loss etc. Just dig back for it. =)

How does this final team look?

    Casillias

    Arbeloa Ramos Barzagli Balzeretti Alba

    Marchisio Pirlo Iniesta Busquets

    Silva Balotelli

This is on wc so no hits, 2.1 in the bank for late tinkering and a selection dilemma with 12 players.....I'm defending a 19 point lead so gone for 7 v 5 fairly even team spread.

Ok my team was decimated last night, six GER and two POR to transfer out.

Using FT only, I can only field a team of nine, assuming Negredo plays (which he won't after THAT performance).

Basically, I'm screwed aren't I? -4 for each extra sub relies on a 0-0, or a high-scoring thriller to make it worthwhile...

-3 for each extra transfer so a bit better, particularly given the RB rule.

I've got 7 in the final with no hits (excluding Negredo), so it could be worse!! I think a lot of people are in a similar boat so I wouldn't worry.

I really, really don't get this idea that you can't have a striker and a defender face each other.

Okay you won't get the highest score of the day but if you think Spain defenders are the best pick go for them, if you think Mario is one of the 1/2 best striker options pick him.

I had Mario(c) and 3 German defenders yesterday - worked out alright.

Also on a separate note, how many hits do you all think is the limit to field as many players as possible? 2? 3? Or just take hits until you've got the full 11?

I am 30 points in front of my wok ML
So am taking -6 to get 11, hoping to cover major attacking options and 2 of each at the back.

Hopin then that this should negate any massive point hauls from either team.

Look at it on a case-by-case basis rather than an overall limit. For every transfer you consider, will the new player score at least 3 more than the player you're taking out.

For decent defenders and midfielders, who get recovered balls, a hit to take out a non-player is likely to be worth it. Much less chance for strikers because they get fewer recovered balls.

See the chain above with me. Thinking the latter, best to have 11 scoring opportunities as most players will break even given a -3 hit.

Full 11 in my opinion, you should make back at least 2 points for every 3 point hit, so i think it's worth it

      Agree...I too back Italy.

Nah, I think we have already seen the best match of the tournament.

And hats-off to all those who captained Balotelli. It's lucky he was subbed around 70th minute, else he could easily have got a hat-trick, when Germany just flung everyone forward.

What a co-incidence though, that Germany was knocked out the same time as you were, Both the finalists in the EuroFFS cup are also from Group C etc etc

I have 8 players for the final, after using my free transfers.

Is it worth taking a 3 point hit per transfer, to field 11 men?

I would be on -9 points.

So from those 3 new players, I would need a goal, CS etc just to break even.

Is it better to only field 8 players & hope that those other people that take a points hit, end up with less points?

Those stats can theoretically help to identify underperformers as well as players hitting form before they get point hauls and everone jumps on a bandwagon. Besides, with baps being awarded based on stats you may identify which players are likelier to get baps.
So, it basically means that you have an informational disadvantage if you don't have those stats. And you can't solve this problem by doing any research, only payment can bring you to the same level.

It's a level playing field. It's like saying that someone in your league has an advantage because they have Sky and ESPN but the others don't want to pay for it. What next? Ration who can watch match of the day because the others have to go out on Saturday night?

I think it's every man for himself. If there's an advantage to be had, you take it. Like I say, its a level playing field - opportunities available to all, it's up to them to take it.

It's not about members its about the whole idea of using this site full stop. There are a lot of folk who have to hide this site from others in their league - fair enough if they're hiding it to keep it a secret (although I'd rather they didn't πŸ™‚ ) but if there is an actual league policy to not use the site because it's an advantage, that seems daft.

Like I say, where does it stop? If one guy's single and can watch more football, is he forced to go out and find a girlfriend because the other managers think it's unfair? πŸ™‚

For me and for most people (I guess) it stops when it starts to boil down to money.
But basically every group of people have to decide on what directions they can compete before starting a competition. In the overall league, people compete on everything. But there is nothing strange that some group of people may want to set a limit to some of these directions, e.g. money or (theretically) time, to ensure they don't get involved into money/time spending chasing.

But like I say, with Fantasy Football, money can dictate whether someone can watch live football. Time is also money for some. For someone who has to work Sundays, they miss out on all the live games and therefore have a disadvantage. So where do you draw the line?

In almost every hobby/sport at grass roots, investing time and money gives some advantage. The more you put in, the more you get back. Fair enough if some leagues want to set ground rules but, for me, there are advantages and disadvantages to be gained and lost all over the place and so many opportunities to claim something is "unfair".

Last night I got back late from a meeting and missed the deadline for subs - my tough luck for not having the time to manage things better. I'm busy and that's the price I pay; it means folk in my mini-league might get an advantage. I can't claim that's unfair though: everyone has different time/money to spend on Fantasy Football. Regulating all this at the mini-league level just seems like a minefield.

Great thoughts Mark, but don't quite agree it's a level playing field. The reason is that a membership on FFS definitely has a big influence on the ranking/points, as compared to a casual. It's right there to see - I won my ML of 20 members in the GW28 or so and I was the only FPL debutant.

Also if you're actually getting FFS membership, it would mean you do care about your team a lot and have a decent amount of time to invest in it.

Having said all that, I'm not saying the MLs have the right to set the ground rules. That's upto each ML but I can totally understand the reasoning.
