Having taken the Premier League by storm in his debut season for West Brom back in 2010/11, Peter Odemwingie declined dramatically as a Fantasy prospect in his second full campaign to assume “Sleeper” status.

Handed a modest starting price across the Fantasy games upon his arrival from Lokomotiv Moscow, the Nigerian striker proved to be a superb value option and fired 15 goals and nine assists, racking up 171 points in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. Predictably, Odemwingie’s Fantasy valuation spiked for last season as a result, with the FPL slapping a 7.5 tag on his services, a factor that was to ultimately dull his appeal before a ball had been kicked. As it turned out, our disinterest was justified.

Odemwingie was handed 25 stuttered starts for the Baggies, emerging from the bench in five more games. It was a frustrating season, not just for the Nigerian but also his manager at the time, Roy Hodgson. The now England boss vented his feelings in the press back in November, having seen Odemwingie fetch just two goals in nine appearances, with a string of niggles and injuries disrupting his input.

For a player who we really put so much into in the hope that he would be a major force for staying in the Premier League we have not had much of a return.

That criticism at least drew a reaction from the player as Odemwingie struck crucial goals in back-to-back wins at Blackburn and Newcastle shortly after. That settled him within Hodgson’s lineup, although a shift to a 4-5-1 formation saw Odemwingie handed a more withdrawn role on the right-flank. Not that this ultimately hindered the Nigerian’s output too much: after a run of six starts without a goal or assist, Odemwingie blasted five goals in two games, as the Baggies swept aside local rivals Wolves at Molineux and Sunderland at the Hawthorns.

That spectacular spell offered a reminder of the quality that Odemwingie possessed and, having ended the season on 10 goals and four assists, he still finished as West Brom’s most potent attacking Fantasy asset.

The Prospects

Odemwingie’s future at West Brom is still far from secure. The player has previously expressed his desire to find pastures new and, wth last season behind him, the Nigerian soon made his intentions pretty clear…

“It is time for me to struggle for silverware not just for survival in the Premier League.”

Meanwhile, his new boss, Steve Clarke, is equally adamant that he’s looking to retain the striker’s services…

“There’s no reason to doubt that he’s not a top, top player and I’m really looking forward to working with him. His goal record here is really good. He’s the man you look to for the goals”

Right now, then, Fantasy managers will be forced to sit back and monitor the situation, not least Odemwingie’s reaction in pre-season and perhaps the effect of renewed interest from Arsene Wenger, a purported admirer.

There’s little doubt that Odemwingie presents the best attacking option within Clarke’s squad right now and that, following a disappointing return last season, we’ll see his valuation decline; a initial value of 7.0 or below seems likely in the FPL.

While a meet with Liverpool and a trip to Spurs present a daunting opening, the Baggies follow that with a decent run of fixtures. Home games with Everton, Reading, QPR and Southampton in the first ten Gameweeks could well ease Clarke’s slippers under the Hawthorns desk and see Odemwingie amongst the goals.

The canny Scot, renowned for his defensive coaching, has promised an attacking brand of football. If Clarke can deliver that and get the best from Odemwingie, Fantasy managers may yet find gold amongst the West Midlands club. With options like Papiss Cisse and Nikaca Jelavic set for significant valuation hikes, Odemwingie is a proven Premier League goalscorer who may well earn our attention once more.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

how come Chelsea have a double GW so soon? Which 3 are we getting in - Mata, Cahill (if he starts) and maybe Hulk? Totally guessing here but Mata is nailed on for me

Ramires for sure, probably give him the armband. Then Terry or Cahill (I just have a sneaking feeling that Cahill is going to have a good season for Chelsea this year). Or maybe both as I certainly won't be going for Torres or either of the unproven new boys. David Luiz and Raul Mereiles would be in the reckoning if I thought they might start both games, which is admittedly most unlikely.

Yeah, he had a good season last season. 18 in 29 in the Bundesliga for a team who were fighting relegation. From what I had seen last season, he seemed to play mainly upfront but had a habit of drifting out wide to support the midfield in a similar way to RVP.

In the event of a guilty verdict: The maximum penalty is a fine of £2,500, with no question of a stricter sentence. Before issuing the sentence the Chief Magistrate will hear submissions from both prosecution and defence on aggravating or mitigating circumstances that should affect the sentence.

sure, but even they must be able to see why every non-United fan would think so.

A team laughed at for so long for being shit - forever living in the shadow of their illustrious neighbours as they became arguably the biggest club in the world - winning the league in a season where it looked like they'd thrown it away months before, only to claw it back, and then throw it away again in the last match, due to two injury time goals, stealing the title from under their rivals' noses as they began to celebrate.

Team squad sizes as per wikilies (not including loan players etc)

    Arsenal – 33
    Aston Villa – 30
    Chelsea – 30
    Everton – 26
    Fulham – 26
    Liverpool – 34
    Man City - 29
    Man Utd – 28
    Newcastle Utd – 29
    Norwich - 28
    QPR – 29
    Reading – 38 (yes 38…)
    Southampton – 31
    Stoke – 28
    Sunderland – 22
    Swansea – 31
    Spurs – 30
    WBA – 24
    West Ham – 25
    Wigan – 25

So with an average of 28.8 (nearly three full teams) per squad we have to choose 15 players from 576……oh joy!

What were squad sizes 10 years ago? 20 max?

It's the guys on massive wages that hurt a clubs finances. The fringe players usually don't affect it that much (some exceptions).

Agreed but it all adds up......certainly plenty of players who spend their time doing not a lot yet still collect their wages. Not blaming them, blaming the clubs. Wish I could collect a salary for nothing!!

I'm getting a bit nervous about the start into the new season and wanted to start thinking about some players for my squad... does anyone have a fixture list where I can see the first 10 games (obivously not in BBC or guardina style ; ) - just neat and clean on one page

Things are really that bad. Catch22, employers want 2 years experience... how are you meant to get the experience.

Degrees are pretty useless now in my opinion.

Yeah this is it, the experience is what you need and once you graduate it's too late to get it. Decided to just go back and finish a PhD as it's paid and is better than the current depressing catch22 situation.

welcome to the real world! It's awful for graduates out there. So many people with degrees and little to distinguish them from their peers. This combined with the economic downturn and many graduates are taking jobs starting at 13-15k that they could have done without a bothering with university.

Who knows, he could UP his rate after he actually settles into life in the toon!! Ha. Truthfully though, it is highly unlikely that he will score at the same rate, but no reason why he shouldn't be one of the leading scorers. Not going to the olympics means he will have the pre season the bed into the team. Watch out in case ramadan affects him the same way as it affected ba last season.

    Richard Lovelace. 1618–1658

    348. To Althea, from Prison

    WHEN Love with unconfinèd wings
    Hovers within my gates,
    And my divine Althea brings
    To whisper at the grates;
When I lie tangled in her hair 5
    And fetter'd to her eye,
The birds that wanton in the air
    Know no such liberty.

When flowing cups run swiftly round
    With no allaying Thames, 10
Our careless heads with roses bound,
    Our hearts with loyal flames;
When thirsty grief in wine we steep,
When healths and draughts go free—
Fishes that tipple in the deep 15
    Know no such liberty.

    When, like committed linnets, I
    With shriller throat shall sing
    The sweetness, mercy, majesty,
And glories of my King; 20
When I shall voice aloud how good
He is, how great should be,
Enlargèd winds, that curl the flood,
    Know no such liberty.

Stone walls do not a prison make, 25
    Nor iron bars a cage;
    Minds innocent and quiet take
    That for an hermitage;
If I have freedom in my love
And in my soul am free, 30
    Angels alone, that soar above,
    Enjoy such liberty.

Surely if Terry is found guilty he should be sacked and sued by Chelsea for damage to their reputation in the same way as Mutu? Any chance of this happening? Any chance at all????? 😉

I'm not sure this will happen ̶w̶h̶e̶n̶ if Terry is found guilty. Suarez was banned after an FA investigation and nothing to do with the courts. Would the FA/Premier be able to to punish him for something he had already been punished for in a court of law, regardless of how pathetic the punishment is..?

Using your Gw2 transfer on this rather than getting rid of one of your Chelsea players?

His goals came when Mancini moved him behind the striker. Usually, he played fairly deep, alongside Barry. I don't think he's ever been that good of a fantasy prospect, certainly not for his price anyway.
