Having taken the Premier League by storm in his debut season for West Brom back in 2010/11, Peter Odemwingie declined dramatically as a Fantasy prospect in his second full campaign to assume “Sleeper” status.

Handed a modest starting price across the Fantasy games upon his arrival from Lokomotiv Moscow, the Nigerian striker proved to be a superb value option and fired 15 goals and nine assists, racking up 171 points in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. Predictably, Odemwingie’s Fantasy valuation spiked for last season as a result, with the FPL slapping a 7.5 tag on his services, a factor that was to ultimately dull his appeal before a ball had been kicked. As it turned out, our disinterest was justified.

Odemwingie was handed 25 stuttered starts for the Baggies, emerging from the bench in five more games. It was a frustrating season, not just for the Nigerian but also his manager at the time, Roy Hodgson. The now England boss vented his feelings in the press back in November, having seen Odemwingie fetch just two goals in nine appearances, with a string of niggles and injuries disrupting his input.

For a player who we really put so much into in the hope that he would be a major force for staying in the Premier League we have not had much of a return.

That criticism at least drew a reaction from the player as Odemwingie struck crucial goals in back-to-back wins at Blackburn and Newcastle shortly after. That settled him within Hodgson’s lineup, although a shift to a 4-5-1 formation saw Odemwingie handed a more withdrawn role on the right-flank. Not that this ultimately hindered the Nigerian’s output too much: after a run of six starts without a goal or assist, Odemwingie blasted five goals in two games, as the Baggies swept aside local rivals Wolves at Molineux and Sunderland at the Hawthorns.

That spectacular spell offered a reminder of the quality that Odemwingie possessed and, having ended the season on 10 goals and four assists, he still finished as West Brom’s most potent attacking Fantasy asset.

The Prospects

Odemwingie’s future at West Brom is still far from secure. The player has previously expressed his desire to find pastures new and, wth last season behind him, the Nigerian soon made his intentions pretty clear…

“It is time for me to struggle for silverware not just for survival in the Premier League.”

Meanwhile, his new boss, Steve Clarke, is equally adamant that he’s looking to retain the striker’s services…

“There’s no reason to doubt that he’s not a top, top player and I’m really looking forward to working with him. His goal record here is really good. He’s the man you look to for the goals”

Right now, then, Fantasy managers will be forced to sit back and monitor the situation, not least Odemwingie’s reaction in pre-season and perhaps the effect of renewed interest from Arsene Wenger, a purported admirer.

There’s little doubt that Odemwingie presents the best attacking option within Clarke’s squad right now and that, following a disappointing return last season, we’ll see his valuation decline; a initial value of 7.0 or below seems likely in the FPL.

While a meet with Liverpool and a trip to Spurs present a daunting opening, the Baggies follow that with a decent run of fixtures. Home games with Everton, Reading, QPR and Southampton in the first ten Gameweeks could well ease Clarke’s slippers under the Hawthorns desk and see Odemwingie amongst the goals.

The canny Scot, renowned for his defensive coaching, has promised an attacking brand of football. If Clarke can deliver that and get the best from Odemwingie, Fantasy managers may yet find gold amongst the West Midlands club. With options like Papiss Cisse and Nikaca Jelavic set for significant valuation hikes, Odemwingie is a proven Premier League goalscorer who may well earn our attention once more.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Saw spike's comment on previous page about points for pass completed could work. Bonus points should be scrapped and points should be given for passes completed, saves, etc.

Lets say a point each for:
    3 saves
    5 recovered balls
    50 passes completed
    5 shots on target
    5 chances created
or something along those lines, what do you guys think?

Either make the bonus points transparent, so we can all see they are awarded fairly, or just scrap them altogether.

Maybe reward the defensive midfielders with RB's.

Also make the assist rule fair!!! That Klose assist in the Euro's was a joke, similar happened last season many times.

I know the scoring is different so picks may be a bit different, but if the SKY game is anything to go by it should be an interesting FPL season, only two players (Hart and Aguero) are over 16.67% ownership.. hope there will be a lot variation in teams and tactics this year....

I've seen LOADS of people on here saying they are going to be getting Ian Harte. I don't see the point. Surely if you get a reading defender, you won't ever CHOOSE him to play. So basically if you are going to get a reading defender, as bench fodder it should be the cheapest (4m) starter. Harte will be at least 4.5m I reckon.

It depends why you are getting them - I Hate certainly isn't bench fodder though, I agree there.

If you are getting 4 (relatively) cheapos, he's a great option. Think he'll be 5-5.5m which is pricey but with all the set pieces he takes, could still be fantasy gold.

Clean sheets are still the bread and butter of any defender though, surely? And any attacking points, are just as likely to occur in the games you don't pick him for. If you pick a defender for attacking potential, you have to play him in every game (bar the top boys away). Would you play harte most games?

Yes there's a chance he'll be a Ward type player but it's a risk worth taking if reading turn out to be a decent defensive unit.

I don't think they're just as likely to occur in games you don't pick him for, e.g. Spurs away, but I get your point. I think if you have Harte, you play him in all games other than away at top 8 teams.

It's the whole Jagielka vs Baines argument again - and the set piece taking defenders always come out on top in the long-run.

Why would you never choose a reading defender to play?!

Best defence in the championship last season. Who was it the year before. Swansea... Not saying they'll get near the same amount of CS's but why would you buy a 4m defender on the basis you'll never want to play them.

I have a funny feeling that swansea was a freak. I can't see any promoted teams doing nearly as well defensively. I would prefer to have a look at the various defenses before I take a punt. That is one of the main reasons I am seriously considering an early WC.

When I rotate defenders, I want to be confident that whoever I choose on any given day has a good chance of a clean sheet. I wouldn't be confident with reading.

The Liberty was a fortress for Swans in the year they were promoted, the Madejski far less so for Reading. Swansea conceded three times fewer goals at home than away in their promotion year, whereas Reading's home form wasn't that much different from their away form. Granted, they kept more cleansheets at home (12 versus 8 away), but I wouldn't be confident in rotating a Reading defender. And this coming from a loyal Royal!

Sure they did. But you won't pick one of their defenders to play every week and if Reading continue to play almost as well away as they do at home, then having one of their defenders for rotation purposes could lead to a lot of frustration (points on the bench)

I have got your mail and I am looking forward to what you are brewing. I shall not be on these boards much this week (as I am graduating this week) so if there are updates from you or FPL I shall see them on the weekend. Thanks

After the Euros I've only been in here for quick looks on the new articles, but just want to say that "The Long and Winding Road" looks set to be an absolutely brilliant competion! Great work on the sponsorship Doosra, really looking forward to this. 😉

And more on-topic: I've been paying the fee for Spotify Premium for a few year now, and haven't regretted it a minute. Totally worth it!

It's bollocks. What happened is Berlusconi's son, who isn't involved with or responsible for transfers, said he would like Carroll to play for Milan and the newspapers have run with it. If we make any offer at all it will be loan with option to buy. Zero chance of anything happening with this one.

Pre-season friendly right? Can't say I'm too fussed, Italian clubs are always awful in friendlies, no effort from the players. That the Italian season and therefore training starts a couple of weeks later doesn't help.

No because he'll be involved in the Olympics and has nang fixtures. But over the course of the season I think he'll be the top scoring high value striker (As in he won't be the top scoring (Aguero), or the top value (Probably Pog or somebody similar) but will offer both - a bit like Adebayor last year.

I'm going to be boring and say it depends on prices but I'll say 3 if they get these (possibly realistic prices)
      Sigurdsson (8M or less)
      Vertonghen (6M)
      Kagawa (9M or less)
      Although I'd expect 8.5, 6.0 and 9.5 ðŸ™

I'd find it difficult to justify Kagawa at that sort of price, compared to tried and trusted assets such as Bale, Valencia, Nani. One to watch, I suspect, see how he and MU start.
