If you missed it, yesterday we announced that we’ll be covering the free-to-play Sky Sports Fantasy Football as our second game this upcoming season. We’ll bring you one article per week when the campaign gets underway but over the next few days, we plan to roll out a few articles analysing the rule set and player picks ahead of the big kick-off on Saturday August 18…

Sky have made a few changes from last season’s offering, with the good news being that the main prize is £25,000 for the overall winner. Over £100,000 in prizes is on offer – second place will land you £5,000, whilst third will be enough to boost your bank balance by a cool £2,500; there is also a selection of monthly and weekly prizes for Fantasy managers to fight for. A new and improved version of Live scoring will also be a welcome addition on Matchdays, allowing you to automatically assess your position within mini-leagues as the points roll in. First up, then, we look at how to play the game:

Team Selection

Managers can select up to two teams; each side consists of XI players and is handed a budget of £75m. Budget-permitting, there is no limit as to how many players from each Premier League side we can select – you can fill your side with as many City and United players as you wish, for example, as long as the formation is one of the five valid team shapes available; 4-4-2, 4-3-3, 5-3-2, 3-5-2 or 4-5-1. Normal captaincy rules also apply, with Fantasy managers scoring double for whoever is handed the armband. One captaincy change per Gameweek is allowed, with Gameweeks running from Saturday to Friday.

In terms of transfers, you can tinker with your team from now right up until the deadline – after that, though, you have just 30 transfers over the course of the season, so use them wisely. In addition, a maximum of five transfers is permitted per calendar month.

In order for a player to score points for your team, he must be transferred in before the earliest kick-off that day – any trades made after this will pick up points from the earliest kick-off the following day, as the rules explain:

For example: If you transfer in Rooney before the earliest kick off on Saturday he will be eligible to score points immediately. If you transfer him in after the earliest kick off on Saturday, he will be eligible to score points from Sunday’s matches

With just a starting XI to manage, there are no subs to play with: a factor which obviously means that selecting regular starters is vital, while reacting to injuries and suspensions becomes equally important.

Essentially, then, the Sky game affords us an easy-to-play option which is relatively less demanding than the likes of Fantasy Premier League (FPL). With prize money on the table, it offers the more hardcore manager a chance to financially benefit from all those hours of research, while at the same time, the minimal amount of team maintenance should appeal to the more casual manager.

Scoring Points

The rules are relatively straightforward when it comes to picking up points. A player receives 2 points if he features in the starting XI and just a single point if he comes off the bench. Scoring a goal is worth 5 points, while an assist will pick up 3 points – one significant factor to bear in mind is that the Sky game uses Opta stats to determine their scoring whereas FPL is run by Press Association statistics.

If your player picks up a caution, he loses a single point – a red card reduces their score by 3 points, as does a missed penalty. At the end of every game, the official Sky Sports Man of the Match is awarded an extra 5 points; we plan to look at those most likely beneficiaries in a future article, by assessing last season’s recipients.

At the back, keepers and defenders pick up 5 points for a clean sheet, though they lose a point for every goal conceded – with no bench as a safety net in this game, rotation of cheap defenders is not an option, making the need for reliable defenders more vital. Keepers also pick up 3 points if a penalty is saved or missed.

This season also sees the introduction of bonus points to the Sky game. Players who produce 60+ passes per game are awarded an extra 2 points, as do those who make 4+ tackles – again, the knowledge of Opta data will be vital. We plan to follow this up with another article on those players most likely to appeal here, with our Members area more than a little handy for such information. We’re planning to create a specific Sky Sports table to accommodate Members playing this game as an statistical aid on last season’s data and, of course, the 2012/13 season as it unfolds.

The Scout League

We’ve set up our own official league for next season’s Sky game, with the prize of a Samsung Blu Ray home cinema system worth up to £600 handed to the overall Scout League winner – it’s not just bragging rights on offer here. In addition we are also hoping to have some monthly prizes available; more on that later but for now, feel free to join up if you haven’t already. The league name is “FFScout” and the pin code “8004519”. Click here to get involved.

Morning all, while we wait for FPL to pull their finger out, I finally think I’m settled on my Telegraph team – any no-no’s in here?

    Cech (3.8)
    Vidic (4.5), Agger (3.6), S Taylor (3.1)
    Dempsey (4.3), Siggy (4.0), Sessegnon (4.0), Arteta (3.6)
    Aguero (6.7), Rooney (6.8), Adebayor (5.6)

Question: Is it worth downgrading Arteta -> Noble (3.0) if it means I could upgrade Agger -> either Ivanovic (4.2), Baines (4.1) or Vertonghen (3.9) ??

I imagine Baines will be a lot better with a proper frontman like Jelavic and Naismith will be getting in the box aswell often.

        FOR ALL PLAYERS
        Starting 11 appearance : 2 points
        Sub appearance : 1 point
        Goal scored(*) : 5 points
        Key contribution : 3 points
        Red card : -3 points
        Yellow card : -1 point
        Missing a pen(*) : -2 points
        Own goal: -3 points

FOR DEFENDERS & GOALKEEPERS - FULL MATCH
        Clean sheet: 4 points
        Concede 1 goal(**): 0 points
Each additional goal conceeded(**): -1 point

FOR DEFENDERS & GOALKEEPERS - PART MATCH
        Clean sheet: 2 points
        Concede 1 goal(**): 0 points
Each additional goal conceeded(**): -1 point

It's not something I have considered before. And it wouldn't mean restricting myself to only picking those players. I just know that some weeks last year I had very poor captain options. The above strategy would guarantee that you have at least one solid captain option every week.

I'm thinking going for a balanced squad this year, with maybe only 1 big hitter, to try and make best use out of the time I spend on looking at rotation and planning transfers, then i would get Mrs China Mag to pick her team based on picking 4 bench sitters, and maximizing the cash spent on the first 11.

Does this make sense?, or are we sure that the best way to go would be a mix of the two strategies?

You would think so. Having looked at google however seems to indicate that its a lot closer than you'd imagine. Apparently horses aren't so confident going downhill, cyclists can reach speeds of 90kmph going downhill. This might make the difference

Pro cyclist would win over any kind of long distance, horses can only gallop (40-48kph according to wiki) for a few k's before needing a rest and as an example the fastest TDF stages are about 50 KPH for 150-200 k's. The horse would win the sprints though as the can reach nearly 90kph whilst cyclists are doing well to get in the 70's for even a short distance.

      I must be bored!

How were so many teams so similar last season? There seems to be LOADS of options, but surely there would have been the same number of options last year. Were lots of players priced wrongly last year so everyone got the players who were undervalued?

Its the problem with having players that are overvalued in the game. It rules them out as an option limiting the pool of desirable fantasy options.

I've seen plenty of people on here pushing to have points for returned balls introduced. The main reason seems to be to give the defensive midfielders more value. Do they not realize that if they did that, they would have to increase the price of these players accordingly? The "value" in picking a defensive midfielder at the minute is that they are dirt cheap, so allow you to fit more big hitters in.

I don't think anyone chooses a defensive mid for price or any other reason. Last season my cheap mid was Dyer.

No one chooses defensive midfielders because they're cheap... No one chooses defensive midfielders full stop. Last year, the most popular "cheap midfielder" (bar Ferguson) were the likes of Dyer, Moses and McClean, who were all wingers/attacking midfielders.

Personally, I don't want RBs to be introduced. They take the skill out of finding those cheap midfielders who can chip in the odd goal or assist. Picking a defensive midfielder who's guaranteed to return RB points every week as a 5th midfielder is no fun.

          +1.

Ppl will be seen arguing that 1 more RB from Lucas would've won them their H2H and stuff like that.

Anybody else finding this drip-drip of player prices from FPL annoying rather than anything else? Why don't they just let us know when it's ready and stop trying to conjure up extra interest before that...

There must have been a delay in the launch. If they always planned to drip feed prices they would have started before now. They should just admit the delay and tell us when we can expect it to open. "Later this month" could mean anything.

Seriously. Annoying to say the least!

They're doing because of the delay in launching in the actual game. But this is, in no way whatsoever, interesting. It takes out all the excitement of seeing the entire price list at once and trying to form a team.

OK that is a good point. But surely a lot of teams have interest in Demps? What is he roughly valued at? Just putting Carroll in there seems like such a minus factor. I hope they loan Carroll out to West Ham to make room for Kev Nolan in my team

I think Carroll is a lot better than that. In the right team, playing to his strengths, he can be lethal.Unfortunately for him that wasn't Liverpool last season, and is unlikely to be under Rodgers either.

Tevez's price is somewhat interesting because he is supposedly back in favor but will have plenty of competition from Aguero, Belotelli and Dzeko (who would probably leave anyway). Aguero and Tevez looked fairly devastating at times so who knows. You'd think Tevez will be a lot cheaper than Aguero

fantasy football scout. additional related question. Does this also mean you earn points for 2 players if you transfer out a saturday player and put Rooney in on Sunday or can you only transfer out a player who hasn't played?

I played Sky last season and say Aguero played Saturday, Rooney played Sunday, RVP Monday and on Saturday Aguero scored but gets sent off for a 3 game ban.

You end up with about 4 or 5 points from him in the bank. Then you can buy Rooney before 1st game kickoff on Sunday and get 10 points from him but he injures himself and will be out for a month. Those points are banked too and you can buy RVP before Monday kickoff and get his points. (It gets complicated if you're trying to sell your captain for someone else. I think only your first captain gets the double, not who you replace them with in this case.)

It all sounds great, but you have quite a limited number of transfers per month and for the season that. You can only go crazy like that if it's really necessary. But if planning to make a transfer in general you should be aware if the person you want is playing later in the GW you should always let the outgoing player play first, then swap and get both points that GW.

And if he doesn't leave til deadline day?

They're probably just testing it thoroughly to avoid a repeat of last season.

And I actually have a good feeling about the new design (probably because you can't get much worse than last season's).

I think I'll like the front end design of the site, I meant.

But they'll be testing the back end to make sure there are no bugs. There'll be over 2.5 million people playing so it needs to be tested properly. Last year was a disaster. They had to give away a free wildcard in week 2 because people couldn't log on around the deadline as the site was overloaded.

Surely it'd make more sense just to have him expensive whether he stays or goes? Stick him at 14, then if he stays he's 14 and if he goes on deadline day he's out of there.

I agree that since they're announcing the prices already they'll have a full price list set up already. They'll just be tweaking and testing it to make sure it works right.

Why can't they tell us RVP's price ?
Its because they want to see whether he stays at Arsenal or not.
If he goes to City he will be probably rotated with Aguero and the 14m tag wouldn't be justified on him.
