Brett Holman arrived at Aston Villa this summer on a Bosman deal from Dutch side AZ Alkmaar, having signed a pre-contract to join the midlands outfit back in March during the reign of Alex McLeish. The 28-year-old midfielder was the first of three new faces to boost Paul Lambert’s squad, with Karim El Ahmadi and Matthew Lowton also added to the ranks in recent weeks:

Holman’s attacking threat is likely to add plenty menace to a side that struggled for goals last season under the defensive-minded McLeish and, while there are fears he may not feature in Lambert’s plans, the former Norwich boss has been quick to assure the Australian he will get a fair crack of the whip following the previous manager’s dismissal:

“If there is one lad who has probably got a bit of trepidation, then it would be Brett because it wasn’t me who brought him to the club. But I have spoken to him to reassure him and he will get a right fair chance. He did well at Alkmaar so I don’t have any worries about him on that score. As long as he works hard and tries to be successful, then he will be the same as everybody. He will get a chance.”

The Statistics

Holman’s career in his native country kicked off in the youth set-up at Northern Spirit before he was snapped up as a 17-year-old by Parramatta Power in the 2001-02 campaign. He managed five goals and a couple of assists in 13 first-team appearances before sealing a move to Feyenoord in 2002 but failed to feature for the Dutch giants – the following four seasons saw Holman farmed out on loan to SBV Excelsior where, over the course of 134 league appearances, he returned 39 goals and 23 assists.

The Australian’s impressive attacking displays saw him move to another Dutch club, NEC Nijmegen, where he produced 13 goals and six assists over 59 games before Louis Van Gaal signed him for AZ Alkmaar in the summer of 2008. Holman lasted four seasons at the club and also worked under Dick Advocaat, making a total of 96 league appearance and returning 15 goals and 20 assists. Last term was by far his most successful from an attacking perspective, with five goals and 11 assists earning him two prestigious accolades in his native country – Holman was voted Player of the Year by the Professional Footballers Australia and Football Media Association’s International Player of the Year.

The Prospects

The new manager’s propensity for attacking football should certainly boost Villa’s prospects going forward next season. Last term saw the midlands outfit register a mere 37 goals, the second lowest total in the Premier League and considerably less than Lambert’s Norwich; the Canaries netted 52 goals, a tally only beaten by the top six.

Certainly, Holman got off to the perfect start last weekend at Burton Albion. On as a second half sub, he grabbed the decider in a 2-1 victory to ensure Lambert kicked off his tenure as Villa boss with a win. Holman also started and completed an hour of last night’s 1-0 win over Philadelphia Union.

The Australian is able to play on either flank as well as a second striker and his adaptability could prove vital when assessing his potential game time for the season ahead. With Charles N’Zogbia likely to pick up the most investment from the Villa midfield as a result of renewed expectations, Holman should fly under the radar, though question marks hang over his ability to make an instant impact in his new surroundings.

From a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) perspective, N’Zogbia’s 6.5 valuation could well be a significant factor in how we assess Holman. The former Wigan man started last term at 7.5 and, while he failed to fire under McLeish, his proven returns at his previous club are likely to bring investment his way. At 6.0, Holman is just a tad cheaper, though his acquisition represents more of a gamble, given he’s a newcomer to the league. Intriguingly, the Sky Sports game have handed both an identical value of 5.7 in the mid-price bracket.

Looking at the fixture list, the midlanders have been afforded the perfect opportunity to banish the memory of last season from the off. Home clashes against Everton, Swansea and West Brom in the first six Gameweeks look prosperous and with trips to promoted pair West Ham and Southampton, Lambert’s side may well be quick out the blocks. If Holman can nail down a regular role, the Australian may very well be one to watch.

exactly my thinking, except with the defence i've gone down the fulham/stoke/sunderland rotation as it sounds the safest bet for my liking. Frei there as a placeholder as not sure who else to get, but need to have a deeper look at the cheaper midfielders

team a for me. better balance which i think is key to the start of the season. i don't like your 3 cheap mids in b. i'd look into getting ivanovic instead of terry in a and bringing in kagawa for yaya. that gives you united coverage from the beginning of the season. i think yaya is almost as much of a punt as kagawa as you dont know when he'll be playing deep or not

At this time of night you get more time to read posts properly and get into better discussions. Sometimes during the day theres just too much going on.

I've also found that a lot of the football fans from NZ, AUS, US, India etc are quite into the sport and knowledgeable. Maybe something to do with the fact its not your countries main sport.

Vis-a-vis, during the day you get a lot of casual English fans who are just culturally indoctrinated and unfortunately they don't add much to the forum apart from repetitive RMTs.

Both should do really well this year. Tevez and Yaya are the tempting, cheaper alternatives, who could score just as well, and at a full 4.5m cheaper are perhaps the way to go....

Anyone mind Rating My Team on the first draft?

    Cech (Jussi)

Vermaelen - Hangeland - Cashley (Rafael, Fonte)

Hazard - McAnuff[c] - Yaya - Valencia (Pienaar, depending on his transfer)

Vaz Te - Rooney - Pog

Going for Chelsea+Reading scoring well in the DGW. Something about watching Vaz Te last season tells me he is going to hit the ground running.

    Any suggestions welcome!

    Cheers lads.

It's good to go with a gamble like Vaz Te if you have seen him and have a sense he'll make it in the Prem. My only niggle with your team is you only have Yaya for MNC exposure - the team that scored the most goals (by far) and kept the most CS. Why not Lescott or Clichy for A.Cole since you already have Cech ? And no CHE attacking player for GW1 ? How about Hazard/Lampard for Valencia for GW1 ? I am also not convinced by Pog - his Bundisliga history suggests his Fulham start was a bit of a fluke.

Alright thanks for the tips. Yeah you are right about the City coverage, no point in me doubling up on Chelsea clean sheets. I'll bring Lescott in there. Pog was put in there simply because everybody was talking about him, but now I think about it I don't think its a smart move. I don't want Hazard, I would much rather have Marin if it was guarunteed that he would play. Lukaku WOULD be a fantastic fantasy buy if he got the game time.

cheers, another option is downgrade Bent to Graham(or someone around that price but I like concept of Graham). Then use the 2.5million gained to upgrade Noble to Ben Arfa which makes the midfield:

Ben Arfa / Kagawa / Hazard / Michu / Guthrie which looks stronger

Aussie Dude here looking for some asistance.

First, in the league setup what is the KO round for?

    Secondly, RMT:

    Cech - Vorm

A Cole, Williams, Fabio, Harte, Vertonghen

    Marin, Siggy, Dempsey, Noble, Lallana

    Giroud, Cisse, Graham

    - Realise keepers are expensive but set & forget in my mind
    - Worried about no cover from United or City
    - RVP is too expensive and could move on anyway

    Thoughts?

Dont want to be too harsh but really not sure about that team- i do appreciate being different but this is too different if u ask me

gks- if u have cech no need to pay for vorm, get a 4.5
def- ok better to have lescott rather than veton
mid- again ok siggy or bale? will marin start?
      fwrds- too cheap

How much does this team cost? looks ike an 90 million team to me

Initial RMT, I appreciate any feedback:

    Mignolet, Jaaskelainen

IMO the midfield is way too risky with Kagawa and Toure so think about changing them to cheaper ones and upgrading your forwards as i think giroud will not perform under arsene as he is more of a power player rather than a skilled one like he might want him to play like. Koscielny is also a bit risky but maybe he'll work out alright. So yeah, with a downgrade in the midfield you will be able to upgrade your strike force to acquire more points

Thanks, I may just downgrade Toure and upgrade Kagawa to Silva, food for thought. If Kagawa hits the ground running then I could make the switch, same with Giroud. Waiting of course to see what happens with RVP.

        1. Don’t go near Stoke or Sunderland goalies.
        2. Have one City defender at all times.
        3. No more than 2 defenders £6m or over.
        4. Avoid Everton and Wigan players until the second half of the season.
        5. Two middle range defenders until cheap alternatives are known.
        6. One bench warmer bargain basement defender.
        7. Avoid rotation managers like Lambert.
        8. Try resist City forwards apart from Aguero.
        9. Buy from predictable managers like O’Neill.
        10. Avoid defenders relying on Jaaskelainen between the sticks.
        11. Avoid bandwagons that only seem to take on a life of their own on FFS.
        12. Don’t ever buy Defoe, Gibbs, Kolarov, Ireland, Hibbert or Bendtner no matter how logical it seems at the time.
        13. The second Bale shows signs of form, buy him even if it means sacrificing a Silva or Nani.
        14. Don’t buy Ashley Young.
        15. Stick to players that you can better predict when their point hauls will come such as Sunderland, Fulham and Swansea DFs, Dempsey, Bent or Aguero while playing at home while on the flip side avoiding unpredictable WBA & Wigan players, Everton attackers
        16. Ignore news around here of some non entity ripping it up in pre-season ala Boselli.
        17. Keep the wildcard until after January.
        18. No more than 5 point hits all season.
        19. Never captain a defender.
        20. Stop spending so much time reading this site and compiling silly lists.

    jaaskeleinen (+ filler)
    terry | ivanovic | gorkss | (kaboul) | (rangel)
hazard | siggy | noble | kagawa | (whoever ends up being swansea AMC)
    aguero | tevez | pog

bit of a risky midfield, particularly siggy, most likely i'll pussy out on that one xD plan is to bring in vidic for terry week 2...

depends on the swansea midfielder really, if i get dyer i have an extra 0.5 but i was intending on guzman (6.0) or most likely michu, so i'll have to wait on prices. if michu comes in and is more than 6 though i might look elsewhere...

Thinking of going with Freidel instead of DDG to partner Federici.

    - Rotates pretty well
    - No plans to have a Spud defender anyway (as of now atleast)
    - Would avoid doubling up on Utd when I bring in Vidic in GW 3
    - Saves some cash too

    Sounds sane?

    1. N'Zogbia to Holman and Nasri to Yaya, are these considered as downgrades, or? (both have lower prices by 0.5)

      1. wouldnt consider them downgrades, more like smarter options
      2. not worth it, with any wigan defender for that matter

      1. The first one maybe. The second one no. Yaya will be playing very deep.
      2. Not sure.

yay is a downgrade in terms of points potential assuming both play, but nasri is less likely to play. talk is that holman will be 'given a chance', but he's hardly nailed on.

      1. Nah. Good moves imo.

      2. Definitely not. If you so desperately want a Wigan defender, just pick the cheapest one assured of game time.

Darn... I wasn't interested in a low ID but wanted to get a lower one than those who really did 😉 but by definition that prob means I wanted a low ID in which case I failed as I was in a 3hr meeting when it went live so I'll have to be happy with Mr Joe Average ID 😉

It's still low DF if you think about the 2,500,000 who'll be in by kickoff.
