Man City get back to winning ways after a couple of poor performances, as Sergio Aguero and Vincent Kompany grabs the goals against Besiktas. QPR notch five for the second successive pre-season friendly, with Adel Taarabt pulling the strings as his side run riot against Asian side Kelantan. Djibril Cisse’s injury is an early concern for Mark Hughes, however…

Man City 2 Besiktas 0
The champions stepped up a gear in their third pre-season match after failing to find the net in the first two. While still devoid of his Euro 2012 contingent, Roberto Mancini fielded a strong looking side, with Vincent Kompany shaking off a hamstring knock sustained in the previous game against Dynamo Dresden to start alongside Kolo Toure in the heart of defence. Despite a multitude of star names on show, the City official website praised the performance of Abdul Razak in particular – the teenager carried much of his side’s attacking threat and set up Sergio Aguero for the opener. Kompany demonstrated his class once again by grabbing the second; carrying the ball out from the back, the City skipper executed a perfect chip over the opposition goalkeeper just before the hour mark. The Belgian was immediately subbed off, though, and, as Mancini continued to ring the changes during the second half, City lost their momentum but, despite suffering a scare when the Turkish side hit the post, cruised home comfortably in the end.

Man City Starting XI: Pantilimon; Zabaleta (Rekik 70), K Toure (Boyata 88), Kompany (Savic 57), Kolarov (Helan 88); A. Johnson (Mancini 88), Y Toure (Evans 75), Razak, Lopes (Weiss 46); Aguero (Jelavic 70), Tevez (Scapuzzi 64)

Kelantan 0 QPR 5
Mark Hughes’ side continued to rack up the goals in their Asia tour with another 5-0 win yesterday. Intriguingly, QPR lined up in a 4-4-1-1 formation, with Adel Taarabt handed a role in “the hole†behind Djibril Cisse, while both Fabio and Rob Green earned their first starts since joining up at Loftus Road this summer. According to the match report on the club’s official website, Taarabt was central to most of his side’s attacking moves and, creating chances aplenty from a more central position, picked up two assists. At 6.0 in FPL and 5.2 in the Sky Sports game, the Moroccan is definitely one to watch next term, though it’s arguable that this team shape may be more applicable to away games, bearing in mind that QPR picked up one point from nine road trips under Hughes last term.

Substitute Max Ehmer also provided a pair of assists, with Shaun Wright-Philips, Michael Harriman, Darren Mackie, Bobby Zamora and Heidar Helguson all getting amongst the goals in another emphatic performance from the London outfit. Despite the win, Hughes’ joy was somewhat tempered by the hamstring problem that forced Cisse off after just 20 minutes – the manager admitted post-match:

Djib felt some reaction in his hamstring. We’ll have to wait for a couple of days before it settles down and then we can make a more definite decision. It’s probably too early to make a guess on how long he’ll be out for…We’re hopeful it won’t be any longer than a week to ten days, but it’s too early to say for definite.

QPR Starting XI: Green (Murphy 46); Fabio, Ferdinand (Connolly 60), Hill (Onuoha 46), Traore (Harriman 46); Mackie, Diakite (Doughty 60), Ephraim, Wright-Phillips; Taarabt (Zamora 60); Cisse (Johnson 20) (Helguson 77).

Lets discuss RVP! Do we think he is going to leave Arsenal, if yes where do you think he will go?

And finally, would you consider buying him if he went to Man city or united, would you rethink buying aguero/rooney if he did??

Personally i think he will go to Italy and FFPL will be more interesting without him!

a few pre-season posers as i work on my team

    1) given chelsea uncertainty with attacking formation/new players, is anyone doubling up at the back for the dgw?
    2) does anyone think lescott could be a rotation risk and hence thinks Kompany is better option?
    3) Are there any Nani lovers out there? Ok I know there is serious rotation risk there but if he starts the season strongly will be a great differential potentially.
    4) doesn't walters at stoke look mis-priced given his OOP qualities and his strong scoring last year?

You can tell what I am thinking from my team below - but I am not afraid to be convinced to change!!

    De Gea/Juusi
    Terry/Cole/Kompany/Fabio/Jenkinson
    Nani/Walters/Noble/N'Zogbia/Silva
    Aguero/Graham/Pog

      1. a few people are. I reckon there'll be a few mids nailed on and Torres also unless they sign another striker or lukaku continues to start and do well Pre season. Heard he might be going out on loan though.

      2. Would think Lescott is nailed on with company. Can't justify 7.5 on kompany this season.

      3, will wait and see

4 Walters is pretty good value, no reason why he shouldn't get similar returns to last season IMO

Lescott is nailed-on, I'm tipping him to be the top scoring defender for this season. You're right about Nani, but is the start of the season really the best time to search for differentials? Walters doesn't really tempt me at all, from memory he always scored at home (and off a penalty), but this time round its Arse and City - tough fixtures.

ok thanks folks. I think i might keep walters in the back pocket, save a bit with lescott but with money to swap to company if needed, wait on nani thinking of going Bale/de Guzman the latter as a punt on a player with good fixtures too.

Very good team, strong gk, def, str. I think you could do a little more with the midfield, I'd wait to see how Dempsey beds in at that price personally. Ramires could be decent but for that money I think I'd go hazard mcclean/pienaar(if he moves to Everton) instead of demps/ram.

    My defence is

    DDG/4.5
    WHam/WHam/Stoke/Stoke/Terry

    *Terry will change to Lescott

I have the 2 most likely teams for clean sheets covered in Man City & Man Utd and I always have 2 players with decent defences at home to cmplete the defence. Best of all it's cheap.

I'm ure there must be a huge flaw in my thinking.....anyone care to point out what it is?

Well it's just if west ham or stoke don't keep clean sheets.

Ahh that's the obvious one. However if you have 2 cheap defenders you are happy if one keeps a clean sheet. If Stoke and West Ham keep a 35%-40% home clean sheet record then the returns are guaranteed to be as good as most other medium priced defence combinations.

If West Ham and Stoke can keep a combined clean sheet of 1 every 3 games then I am scoring an average of 3.5 points a game for each cheap defender + goals assists. 3.5 X 38 =133 points each contributed to my overall score. A total of 266+ off my cheap defenders. Now that is a good return.

        Sorry.....my accountancy side coming out.....

Your suggestions were so good, I made part two:

    Hart (Al-Habsi)

Shawcross Ivanovic Evra ( McCartney, Clyne )

Noble, Hazard, Pienaar, Gerrard ( El Ahmadhi )

Torres (for Rooney Wk2) Bent, Pog

    Gerrard for a defining season..

Suggestions can't have been good if you ended up with that 😛

Hart + Al Habsi = 12m on goalkeepers. Waste of money, have a 4.5 as backup and I don't see the value in Hart with DDG 1m cheaper (Friedel is better than DDG to start with though).

Gerrard had terrible fixtures, much better to go with, say, Bale. Why Ahmadhi?

Ahmadhi because I'm a hopeless romantic (Villa fan)

        Good points about keepers, thanks

I think that Gerrard will have the best season of his career. If he can stay injury free

Gerrard couldn't last 80 mins against Italy. He's finished. Will be injured again by October. Liverpool should sell him when he still has a high profile after the Euros and I'm a Liverpool supporter myself!

Wait until their fixtures improve, im sure he will do ok for his price, kaboul better to start with though at the same price in a better team (debateably) with better fixtures.

Will anyone rate my team and put my questions to rest?

    GK: De Gea Jaask
DEF: Lescott Cole Kaboul (Fonte) (Cuellar)
MID: Hazard Yaya Noble Pienaar (Britton)
    FOR: Aguero Ba Torres

So here are the question marks I have hanging over this team at the minute.

1 - Is Fonte nailed on? There's alot of 4.0 defenders available but it's hard to say which one to go for.
2 - Is Pienaar certain to go back to Everton?
3 - Will Ba be pushed out on to the left-wing again? If so, should I go Torres -> Cisse after GW1 and replace Ba with Lambert now?

    Cole, Lescott, Cuellar
    Mata (c), Valencia, Guthrie,Toure
    Aguero, Pogrebnyak (v), Suarez

    Begovic, Nolan, Tierney, McCartney.

2.5m in the bank. Hope to swap Michu for Nolan if the price is right. Potentially the best pound for pound midfielder in FF this season.
