Chris Hughton’s Norwich play out a goalless draw at MK Dons and record a third clean sheet in four. Sir Alex Ferguson admits he has a dilemma over the goalkeeper’s position at United, Paul Lambert talks up the potential of Charles N’Zogbia and Stephen Ireland, while Reading’s Jimmy Kebe looks set to miss the start of the season with a hamstring problem:

MK Dons 0 Norwich 0

Chris Hughton handed new boys Robert Snodgrass and Michael Turner their first starts for Norwich at MK Dons last night. The Canaries boss rolled out a 4-5-1, with forwards Chris Martin and Simeon Jackson on the flanks and Steve Morison the lone frontman. Both Snodgrass and Jackson impressed – the former’s set-pieces and eye for a killer pass caused chaos throughout the first-half and created plenty of chances, while the latter passed up a trio of opportunities to break the deadlock prior to the break. The two new signings almost combined to give the visitors the lead early in the second-half –Turner met a Snodgrass corner only to see his header superbly saved before he made way for Ryan Bennett on 65 minutes. Stout defending from MK Dons limited Norwich’s offensive forays as the game rolled on and, aside from a Martin effort late on, the Canaries failed to threaten as the match finished goalless.

Despite an inability to find the net, Hughton will no doubt take solace in the fact that his side are, yet again, showing a greater defensive resilience over pre-season – this was their third clean sheet in the last four matches. With a mere three clean sheets to their name over the entirety of 2011/12, Norwich’s failure to shut out their opponents has seen their defensive options handed kind price tags for the upcoming campaign – an upturn in output at the back could well see the likes of Marc Tierney (4.0 in FPL) earmarked by Fantasy managers if he can nail down a regular role at left-back next term.

Norwich Starting XI: Rudd; Francomb, Barnett, Turner (R. Bennett 65), Lappin; Jackson (Josh Murphy 79), Surman, Hoolahan, Snodgrass, C. Martin; Morison

In Other News…
As Fantasy managers eye up Reading’s assets ahead of their double Gameweek 1, the Royals right winger Jimmy Kebe looks set to miss out. The club’s official website revealed he is “unlikely” to be ready in time to face Stoke and Chelsea due to an ongoing hamstring problem, after undergoing scans earlier this week. This looks good news for summer signing Garath McCleary to step into Brian McDermott’s starting XI – the former Forest man comes in at 5.0 in FPL and a mere 4.3 in the Sky Sports game. Reading also revealed Chris Gunter has yet to recover from the ankle problem that has forced him out of the last couple of pre-season matches – he is set to miss today’s friendly against Bournemouth as a result.

Sir Alex Ferguson hinted that the goalkeeper’s position is far from settled at United yesterday after Anders Lindegaard signed a new four-year deal at Old Trafford. While many Fantasy managers have pencilled in David De Gea due to the Spaniard’s 6.0 FPL price tag, Ferguson admitted to the club’s official website that the choice between the two is a tough one to call and is set to give him a dilemma in the season ahead:

Anders has come on leaps and bounds since joining us last year There is healthy competition in the goalkeeping department, which is always good for the team, albeit a headache for me! I am delighted to see that he has clearly returned from the summer break in good shape after the disappointment of suffering an injury last season

Paul Lambert reckons both Charles N’Zogbia and Stephen Ireland are set to be key players for Villa next season. The pair were huge disappointments under previous boss Alex McLeish but Lambert’s more attack-minded approach paid dividend at Norwich last term and he anticipates the duo will be crucial to his side’s success in the upcoming campaign. N’Zogbia, at 6.5 in FPL and 5.7 in the Sky Sports game, and Ireland priced at 5.5 and 5.0 in the respective Fantasy games, could well be intriguing mid-price alternatives if they live up to their manager’s faith, with Lambert saying:

Stephen is a real talent, there’s no doubt about that. It shows when he plays because there is a lot of creativity there, just like Charles. They are both really talented footballers. We will try to get the best out of them because they are very, very clever footballers. We’ve got to get Ireland in positions where he can hurt teams. I’ve got a fair idea of what I want to do with him.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Hart and cerny IMO. means you can downgrade a city defender and NEVER need to stress about keeper rotation. In 6 years, this has been the first i've gone with this strategy...

only cos i had vorm/krul from the start last year and the headaches i benched the big points guy.

You have the right idea, a cheap defence is better. Certainly 9m keepers are optimal. Bogovic is a rotation risk though so i'd look to replace him. Have you thought about Swansea offensive cover for their great fixtures?

Sorry lads this got lost on last page....

Good afternoon you gentlemen of leisure, LASHING rain here in the South of Ireland. Worst summer in about 50 years. Say thankyou to us for being the weather buffer of Europe!!!!!

Two fatty, gristle-riddled questions for you to gnaw on this avo….

    1. I fancy the idea of two 6.5 mids, there are plenty to choose from and they give pleny of flexibility l8r on in the game to upgrade/downgrade….but, which 2 to go for???? Pienaar, Fellaini, McClean, Larrson, Michu, N’Zogbia…..which two????

    2. Is it overkill to have Rooney AND Aguero??? At the moment I have Petric/Aguero/Tevez with 1.5 in the bank to change after GW 1 if needs be, but wondering should I just start with both of them and adjust everything else accordingly? Is Rooney enough Utd cover to ignore Valencia/Kagawa and their Def/GK???

1)Larsson/McClean+ Nzogbia/Pienaar... Even though Nzogbia is a HUGE risk

      2) Go for a Torres-Pog-Aguero combo, save 2 mill somehow, and in gw 2 Swap torres for Rooney

+1000000 on the midfield plan. IMO....you should not have more than 1 mid priced below 6.5 for the reasons you have sited above.

As of now, i am on Larrson/N'zog

I think Rooney is enough united cover, and reckon having both united / city cover in defense is essential.

looks like a lot of teams i've seen already. perhaps a good thing. NO WAY graham over petric tho dude! You realise petric is WAYYYYYYYYY underpriced, if it weren't for my heavy strikeforce strategy he'd be my cheap forward.

graham and petric is like night and day. believe!

All signs pointing to great failure for the torres --> rooney swap. Perhaps a rooney hattrick Gw1 & torres hattrick gw2 on the cards. Feels like boselli kolarov drenthe hype glad not to be part of it this time!

With the new manager in place you really can't be certain can you? For 5.5 I'd keep your eye on Ireland, could prove to be great value if played behind a lone striker. Alternatively I like Taarabt at 6.0, unless you already have him that is. Just wouldn't touch Hoolahan.

A tweet said cabaye may not be ready for the start of the season. Thinking silva might be overpriced better value in bale valencia aso. Hazard is a punt might be a great bandwagon but would consider lampard at 9.0 also. Forwards and defence is grrreat!

      depends on the formation.

4-2-3-1 - then he will play in the middle of the 3 just behind rooney.

in a 4-4-2 he might not play so easy home games where fergie picks rooney and wellbeck, you might see kawaga on the bench or out of position

      Sir Alex on Kagawa

As for Kagawa's role, the boss said: "He'll play further forward [than Powell]. We shouldn't be looking at one player changing the way we play but he could make a difference. He can give us that extra in the final third of the field. If his goalscoring record continues he could be a very good player for us."

Far from nailed on. Wait and watch.

Welbeck Chicha and all the mids are competition. Guaranteed in the big games. Not so much in the easy home fixtures.

bingo. in the big games we will play 4-2-3-1 where kawaga will definitely play.

its the easy home games where im worried he would miss out and be rotated

    Krul (Cerny)

    Lescott - A.Cole - Coloccini (McCartney , Clyne)

Walters - Hazard - Kagawa - Dempsey (Marveaux)

    Tevez - Torres - Pogrebnyak

2.0 in the bank for Rooney after GW1.
