Chris Hughton’s Norwich play out a goalless draw at MK Dons and record a third clean sheet in four. Sir Alex Ferguson admits he has a dilemma over the goalkeeper’s position at United, Paul Lambert talks up the potential of Charles N’Zogbia and Stephen Ireland, while Reading’s Jimmy Kebe looks set to miss the start of the season with a hamstring problem:

MK Dons 0 Norwich 0

Chris Hughton handed new boys Robert Snodgrass and Michael Turner their first starts for Norwich at MK Dons last night. The Canaries boss rolled out a 4-5-1, with forwards Chris Martin and Simeon Jackson on the flanks and Steve Morison the lone frontman. Both Snodgrass and Jackson impressed – the former’s set-pieces and eye for a killer pass caused chaos throughout the first-half and created plenty of chances, while the latter passed up a trio of opportunities to break the deadlock prior to the break. The two new signings almost combined to give the visitors the lead early in the second-half –Turner met a Snodgrass corner only to see his header superbly saved before he made way for Ryan Bennett on 65 minutes. Stout defending from MK Dons limited Norwich’s offensive forays as the game rolled on and, aside from a Martin effort late on, the Canaries failed to threaten as the match finished goalless.

Despite an inability to find the net, Hughton will no doubt take solace in the fact that his side are, yet again, showing a greater defensive resilience over pre-season – this was their third clean sheet in the last four matches. With a mere three clean sheets to their name over the entirety of 2011/12, Norwich’s failure to shut out their opponents has seen their defensive options handed kind price tags for the upcoming campaign – an upturn in output at the back could well see the likes of Marc Tierney (4.0 in FPL) earmarked by Fantasy managers if he can nail down a regular role at left-back next term.

Norwich Starting XI: Rudd; Francomb, Barnett, Turner (R. Bennett 65), Lappin; Jackson (Josh Murphy 79), Surman, Hoolahan, Snodgrass, C. Martin; Morison

In Other News…
As Fantasy managers eye up Reading’s assets ahead of their double Gameweek 1, the Royals right winger Jimmy Kebe looks set to miss out. The club’s official website revealed he is “unlikely” to be ready in time to face Stoke and Chelsea due to an ongoing hamstring problem, after undergoing scans earlier this week. This looks good news for summer signing Garath McCleary to step into Brian McDermott’s starting XI – the former Forest man comes in at 5.0 in FPL and a mere 4.3 in the Sky Sports game. Reading also revealed Chris Gunter has yet to recover from the ankle problem that has forced him out of the last couple of pre-season matches – he is set to miss today’s friendly against Bournemouth as a result.

Sir Alex Ferguson hinted that the goalkeeper’s position is far from settled at United yesterday after Anders Lindegaard signed a new four-year deal at Old Trafford. While many Fantasy managers have pencilled in David De Gea due to the Spaniard’s 6.0 FPL price tag, Ferguson admitted to the club’s official website that the choice between the two is a tough one to call and is set to give him a dilemma in the season ahead:

Anders has come on leaps and bounds since joining us last year There is healthy competition in the goalkeeping department, which is always good for the team, albeit a headache for me! I am delighted to see that he has clearly returned from the summer break in good shape after the disappointment of suffering an injury last season

Paul Lambert reckons both Charles N’Zogbia and Stephen Ireland are set to be key players for Villa next season. The pair were huge disappointments under previous boss Alex McLeish but Lambert’s more attack-minded approach paid dividend at Norwich last term and he anticipates the duo will be crucial to his side’s success in the upcoming campaign. N’Zogbia, at 6.5 in FPL and 5.7 in the Sky Sports game, and Ireland priced at 5.5 and 5.0 in the respective Fantasy games, could well be intriguing mid-price alternatives if they live up to their manager’s faith, with Lambert saying:

Stephen is a real talent, there’s no doubt about that. It shows when he plays because there is a lot of creativity there, just like Charles. They are both really talented footballers. We will try to get the best out of them because they are very, very clever footballers. We’ve got to get Ireland in positions where he can hurt teams. I’ve got a fair idea of what I want to do with him.

Cheers Eoin. Thinking of swapping him Cole for him then Coloccini to AN other. Considering Jones too for pricey defender role? Not that clued up on defence rotation and what works other than 3 at home and 2 away and rotae each week. I'm thinking if I have 2 fairly pricey defenders it's best to try having 1 home 1 away each gameweek but for the life of me I donm't know why !

    Lost on last page..My apologies.

Good morning everyone…Thinking of throwing Petric into my sun team as well as the FPL game lads….But I’m also going to be perfectly honest here and tell you i had never heard of this lad until several ITK’s on here started raving about him. He’s now becoming a staple pick for a lot of RMT’s and is banging them in pre season for Fulham. I’m also told he’s played under Jol before which is another pointer towards a pick which may not be much of a punt in all honesty. He’s 2m in the sun game and my team at the moment looks like this….

    Krul

    Clyne/huth/lescott/vidic

    Kagawa/bale/mata

    Rooney/aguero/petric

Thoughts?? Please note, there’s money riding on this..A lot so any constructive pros and cons will be greatly appreciated on this one.

      Petric > Bale?

If Maloney and Guthire fail, you're in trouble imo. I'd only go with one cheapie in midfiled simply because you'll want to get in a mid-price midfielder in the first few weeks as we see form develop in that price range (happens every year).

    Afternoon good folk!

Quick question for you who know more about this subject than I do! Is Jose Fonte nailed on for a starting spot, or could Clyne nick his spot?

Cheers for any help! Much welcome!

I've never seen one of these... so time to be a pioneer 🙂

    RMA

    Hazard Siggy Pienaar McClean Noble
    Rooney Aguero Graham

Hazard->Dempsey is looking like the most likely future transfer.

I like it, Hazard>Dempsey is also on my radar if the great man stays at the Cottage.

More a fan of the RMD myself.

Well it all looks above board, all decent picks. I dont really get what we are supposed to look for, most attackers are worthy of investment at the moment as nobody knows for sure what will happen.

My draft team has stayed the same for a week or so but I'm having one major point of contention. I currently have 3 big hitting midfielders, plus Noble and Maloney to rotate in the final spot. I cannot decide if its worth downgrading one of the big hitters and spending the money elsewhere. My team is currently:

    Friedel, Federici
    Terry, Saylor, Cuellar, Boyce, Gunter
    Hazard, Bale, Kagawa, Noble, Maloney
    Torres, Tevez, Graham

2m Rooney fund in bank (can easily make it 2.5 by switching Terry to Cole/Ivan)

This is not meant as a RMT, just one question. Do you think I could improve the team by saving 2-3m downgrading Kagawa/9.5 mid to a 6.5 like Pienaar and spending the money elsewhere?

I would downgrade Kagawa and bring Rooney in from the off. Nice team Milanista 🙂

Kagawa is the one I'm thinking of downgrading though I'm pretty set on the Torres>Rooney GW2 move.

Maybe I stick with it to begin with. Double Utd attack looks far less appealing after GW4 so might go with this and change Kagawa GW5. I'm not really sure...

        Cheers for your input 🙂

I think Kagawa is a great talent i will be fantastic! I just think he may be rotated with Welbeck in home games. It's too risky.

Valencia pretty much nailed on the right for the first few GW's as he has had a good pre-season run. Fit and raring to go.

I am getting kagawa, I think he is class and could be creative force in united mf.

Not going for the Rooney save 2m tactic, I am going a Newcastle forward for Torres gw3.

I'm liking their run then for few games,

      Ba / cisse Time 😉

I'm very tempted by Cisse. The fixtures are a little sticky to begin with but his returns last season were amazing.

          Torres, aguero, Petric.

if kawaga plays most likely it will be in a 4-2-3-1 with kawaga in the 3 behind rooney up top

no doubt kawaga would be fantasy gold if fergie doesnt rotate him and plays him just off rooney.

but fear of rotation and playing 4-4-2 at home to weaker teams may affect kawagas fantasy returns.

                Fergie will most likely play

                Carrick with Scholes/Ando/Clevs

Kagawa could even play on the wings.

Too early to back him. And its a good 8.5 mil youre spending there.

10.5 is also quite a lot for one position that doesn't deliver massive returns. I agree that the price of keepers this season is a pain.

It is, I think the only other viable option is to go with double budget for 4.5/4.5. Once you started getting to mid-price + backup who isn't a bench warmer you've got to look at it and weigh up whether you may as well just go for big hitter + a nobody.
