A goal from Jermaine Defoe is enough for Spurs to see off Watford. Nemanja Vidic returns as Antonio Valencia is fielded at right-back for United’s draw at Valarenga, Edin Dzeko bags a brace in City’s stroll in Limerick, while Everton and Wigan both fall to defeat at the hands of Blackpool and Real Mallorca respectively:

Watford 0 Tottenham 1
Andre Villas-Boas continued with the 4-2-3-1 formation which has served his side over all their games thus far – Jermaine Defoe’s predatory instincts made the difference after he nodded home a Kyle Walker cross in the second-half. Priced at 7.5 in FPL, Defoe is an intriguing prospect if he can nail down the lone forward role, particularly with such a strong opening schedule – certainly, the club’s attempts to acquire Emmanuel Adebayor on a permanent basis seem to be weakening by the day right now and, with Gareth Bale, Gylffi Sigurdsson and Rafael Van der Vaart battling for our midfield attention, whoever finally lands the lone forward role at Tottenham for the season ahead will undoubtedly be a popular pick amongst Fantasy managers. Sigurdsson and Jan Vertonghen were introduced after the break yesterday, with the club’s official website heralding the Belgian’s ability to bring the ball out from defence and instigate attacks. The clean sheet means Spurs have conceded just two goals in five games under Villas-Boas, suggesting their backline perhaps has the ability to adapt to their manager’s tactics a little better than his former club Chelsea.

Spurs Starting XI: Friedel (Cudicini, 46); Naughton (Walker, 46), Kaboul, Gallas (Vertonghen, 46), Assou-Ekotto; Jenas (Sigurdsson, 46), Livermore (Bentley, 79); Carroll (Huddlestone, 66), Lennon, Bale (Townsend, 75); Defoe (Kane, 66).

Wigan 0 Real Mallorca 2
Roberto Martinez handed new boy Ivan Ramis a start in the back-three but despite their possession game dominating play, Wigan were caught on the counter and slumped to their first pre-season defeat yesterday afternoon. Whilst Mauro Boselli’s recent goal spree has hogged the headlines, Martinez handed Franco Di Santo the chance to lead the line for the Latics. Di Santo was a strong threat over the first 45 before making way for Boselli at the break – he had three chances, with an effort ruled out, while Boselli failed to impress in the second-half.

Wigan Starting XI: Al Habsi; Ramis (Lopez 45), Caldwell, Alcaraz; Boyce (Stam 45), McCarthy (Fyvie 86), Gomez, Beausejour; Maloney, Moses, Di Santo (Boselli 45)

Limerick 0 Man City 4
Yet again, City rolled out a 3-5-2 formation, as Roberto Mancini handed some of his Euro 2012 contingent game time yesterday. Edin Dzeko gave his manager food for thought after bagging a brace in his first start of pre-season – while clearly short of sharpness, the Bosnian is perhaps currently ahead of Mario Balotelli in the pecking order up front. Neither Balotelli or David Silva have featured at all in pre-season, with the suggestion that both could be a doubt for the season kick-off. It could also mean that Dzeko could be handed game time if Sergio Aguero or Carlos Tevez needs replacing during games right now – once Baltotelli gets his fitness up to speed, however, he is surely set to vie with Tevez for starts. With regards to formation and frontman options, next Sunday’s Community Shield will hopefully shed more light on Mancini’s thinking ahead of the season opener with Southampton.

Man City Starting XI: Pantilimon; Evans (Wabara 57), McGivern (Lopes 46), Lescott; Boyata, Milner, Nasri (Scapuzzi 32), Suarez, Clichy; Dzeko (Bunn 70), Santa Cruz,(Facey 73).

Valeranga 0 Man United 0
Nemanja Vidic was handed an hour’s game time in his first start for eight months as United played out a stalemate in Norway. The worrying news for Fantasy managers was the sight of Antonio Valencia beginning the match as a right-back – Nani was afforded the right wing role in his first outing since Euro 2012, while Anders Lindegaard got the nod over David De Gea between the posts. Ashley Young started on the left, while Wayne Rooney was partnered by Danny Welbeck up top as Sir Alex Ferguson rolled out a 4-4-2. The latter spurned several opportunities to find the net before making way for Shinji Kagawa on the hour mark, as United moved to 4-4-1-1. Playing in “the hole”, the Japanese midfielder’s creativity caught the eye – he twice provided chances for his team mates but United – despite their dominance –continued to flounder in front of goal and had to settle for a draw. Ferguson’s side have found the net just three times in four pre-season matches thus far, though the upside is their defensive displays – the Old Trafford outfit have registered a trio of clean sheets over those games but their resilience will be firmly out to the test on Wednesday when they square up to Barcelona.

Man United Starting XI: Lindegaard; Valencia, Vidic (Anderson 61), Ferdinand, Keane; Nani, Carrick, Scholes (Powell 75), Young (Lingard 75); Rooney (Hernandez76), Welbeck (Kagawa 61).

Blackpool 2 Everton 0
Nikica Jelavic and Steven Naismith started for the first time together since the latter’s summer move from Glasgow Rangers and the pair offered some glimpses of their previous partnership at Ibrox before the Croatian was subbed off at the break. Steven Pienaar was afforded his first game time since returning to the club from Tottenham and teed up Marouane Fellaini to net in the second minute but the effort was ruled out for offside. Naismith and Leon Osman both came close in the second-half but with David Moyes making a host of changes after the break, Everton fell off the pace and slumped to their first defeat in four pre-season matches.

Everton Starting XI: Mucha, Neville, Heitinga, Duffy (Bidwell), Baines (Garbutt); Coleman, Fellaini (Vellios), Gibson (Barkley), Pienaar (Osman 46); Naismith (Rodwell 70); Jelavic (Anichebe 46).

I believe now the old RateMyTeam website thingy has been subsumed into FFS we can expect that to appear at some point.

Not sure otherwise, fancy starting some rumours? I'll start - FFS is going to have members only forums where we can escape the riff-raff. There'll be big leather armchairs and snifters of brandy at a wave of the hand.

ah members-only club. Sounds nice. Except I'm not a member.

I thought they might think about making the comments search work better or some way to track who has replied to your comments (in-site).

Have the FFS H2H leagues been binned?

Haven't heard anything from a formal source about anything to do with the comments functionality, collar a scout next time one's about.

As far as I know the H2H leagues have sadly become a victim of the site's popularity - too much like hard work these days. There was a campaign to try to resurrect them but I've heard nothing to suggest it was successful.

Nothing wrong with an early wildcard. You get a free one in January anyway.

I've wildcarded early and always come off better for it - the extra cash you make WC'ing with the 'noobs' comes in handy when picking form players later.

You just have to know how you're playing and plan around it.

What are people's thoughts about Spurs defensive capabilities please? There is a lot of chatter about AVB being an offensive orientated manager and as such the defense can be weakened. Does this really happen or was it an anomaly with an uninspired Chelsea last season?

Will totally depend on whether we adapt to his style of play. Porto conceded a ridiculously little amount of goals. Have looked more comfortable as pre season has progressed. Good set of fixtures to start though.

In his season at Porto, they conceded 13 goals all season. 19 clean sheets in 30 games.

So his approach is perfectly capable of delivering defensive strength, it just didn't work out at Chelsea. The question is whether it didn't work out because Chelsea's ageing egos weren't willing/able to adapt or whether it's something about the premiership style of football. I've decided to wait and see but that does mean missing out on their nice early fixtures and maybe missing out on bargain of the century Dawson.

AVB had a great defensive record at Porto and a poor one at Chelsea.

How much of the Chelsea thing was down to players lacking the attributes for the system, players attitudes, bad man-management, sub-standard coaching... who knows.

I genuinely think Spurs will be good again this year but it's a hunch more than anything stronger.

        The way I see it one of two things can happen;

        1) Spurs become clean sheets rocks as no one can break past the uber quick defence.
        2) Freidel makes a tonne of save but lets some goals in.

I see no problem with either scenario

As AVB plays a high line, it all depends on whether Spurs can recruit a goalkeeper who is comfortable playing as a sweeper to break up attacks.

Friedel simply isn't that type of keeper, as the pre-season friendlies have shown.

You don't want Pog. Perhaps for the DGW but at 5.0 there are no alternatives to change do when Reading's goals dry up.

      2) for me.

Anybody else think that Winston Reid could be moved to RB to accommodate the arrival of Collins? McCartney currently looks more appealing than Demel imo.

neither at the moment.. Valencia might still play at RB at the start of the season and Siggy is playing at a deeper position.. so wait.

When Valencia played at right back last season he got a significant number of assists so hardly a risk

Siggy scores goals. He is the one to get. Playing a deeper position matters if your name is Mikel or Tiote but it will not affect him imo

Yeah but you'd rather not spend 9.0m on a RB especially since his place isn't guaranteed, whether he got assists there in the past or not.
Bale and Siggy come at the same price. And with AVB's pass, pass, pass tactic Siggy might very often assist the assister.

That is very true and valid points. But Bale is 0.5 more expensive and that makes a difference. Assisting the assister ala Modric is possible but Siggy does take a lot more shots on goal and has a more direct approach than Modric who opens space a lot more.

What I meant about Valencia is that he is not a right back but Fergie uses him there when he has no depth in defence He already suggested Jones would start there at the beginning of the season and he obv does not want to get them too tired in preseason or play them 90 mins when unfit. Also when Valencia was fully fit last season he played every game.

Haven't conceded many goals. Our first proper game was at LA Galaxy and we looked very suspect to the long ball. But the further along pre season has gone the more comfortable we've looked. Plus Sandro and Parker to come back in, promising signs.

They have conceded 2 in 4 games, Stevenage (2-0) and Liverpool (0-0) is CS, conceded against LA Galaxy and New York Redbulls. Dont know much about the american teams tbh.

My gut tells me spurs will do great this season.. even at defence, and that I say as a Gunner fan.
Just too hard to know at this point who will play CB with Vert. Walker and BAE is a coinflip imo, and could be the highest scorers FPL wise this season

5-6 out of 10. Pog is unreliable and is overhyped IMO, but I could be wrong. Sinclair may also be a bit of a gamble as he is returning from the olympics so he may not be ready to start the first premier league or so. Poor goalkeeper combination.

Rotates well with Friedel, Vorm and De Gea. Many having him as he has a DGW fixture, many thinking he'll keep a CS against Stoke.

Personally I'm going with Green - QPR have had a taste of the PL last year and I think they'll be much stronger defensively this year. Also Green rotates well with the mentioned 3.

Yup. I have DDG. But I was thinking whether it's really worth getting a Reading GK when others are available at the same price, best defense in the championship or not.
I basically got him in for the two aforementioned reasons, DGW and rotation. But now I'm skeptical if he'll do well when DDG can't play.

There are 5 spelling mistakes in this.

Defence you have spent a little too much on would be better to change one of the 5.0 to a 4.5 maybe Hangeland. Again in midfield you could downgrade one of Larsson or Pienaar unless you are planning on playing 5 in midfield and benching Graham which is not wise. Mata has played Euros and Olympics so will likely be rested.

You can then have some funds to improve Torres and/ or Graham

Out of 10 I would give this team a 6
