Fabio Borini nets on his Anfield debut as Liverpool ease past FC Gomel in the Europa League. Joe Allen moves closer to completing his move to Merseyside, Spurs slump to a 2-0 loss at Valencia, Martin O’Neill is sweating on the fitness of Stephane Sessegnon, while Brett Holman is determined to nail down a role in “the hole” at Villa next season:

Liverpool 3 FC Gomel 0
With Joe Allen watching in the stands, Brendan Rodgers rolled out his first-choice backline for Liverpool’s second-leg Europa League qualifier last night. Steven Gerrard was the further forward of the midfield three, while Luis Suarez and Stewart Downing flanked Fabio Borini up front. Borini made an instant impact on his first home start since joining up at Anfield from Roma but it was Suarez who caught the eye; he provided a pair of assists, in addition to having seven efforts over the 90 minutes and, intriguingly, also took a direct free-kick. Gerrard had chances aplenty, too – he grabbed his side’s second and struck the post – while the Liverpool skipper also shared corners with Stewart Downing. Glen Johnson served a reminder of his attacking potential from deep by hammering home the Reds’ third to ensure their progress to the next round.

Post-match, Rodgers admitted he was keen to keep Daniel Agger at the club, despite the attentions of Man City. The Liverpool boss revealed the Dane is crucial to his plans for the campaign ahead, saying:

There’s nothing new to add. He’s very important for me. I like to have a playmaker at the back. With Daniel, this is his game – building from behind, stepping out with the ball and making passes and you see his commitment to the cause. For me there’s no update because we don’t want to sell him. He’s a player who is very important for me and it will remain that way.

Rodgers then went on to concede that Allen is close to sealing a move from Swansea, with the midfielder expected to undergo a medical on Merseyside later today:

It’s obviously imminent. If he is up here, it is a sign there has been good communication with Swansea and hopefully over the next 24 hours we can conclude it.

Liverpool Starting XI: Reina; Johnson, Agger, Skrtel (Carragher 76), Enrique; Lucas (Spearing 86), Shelvey (Adam 76), Gerrard; Downing, Borini, Suarez

Valencia 2 Spurs 0
With the news that Scott Parker has been ruled out of the start of the season after undergoing an Achilles operation, Andre Villas-Boas has real problems in the Spurs double-pivot. Jermaine Jenas and Jake Livermore were handed the deep-lying central midfield roles last night but failed to impress and, with Sandro still on Olympic duty with Brazil, the lack of options is having a knock-on effect on Gylfi Sigurdsson. The Icelandic international lined up in “the hole” behind Jermaine Defoe and was handed corner kick duties but the introduction of Rafael Van der Vaart for Jenas was to Sigurdsson’s detriment, with the latter shifted into a more defensive role as the Dutchman took his place alongside Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon in the attacking midfield three.

Tottenham Starting XI: Friedel; Walker (Naughton 77), Gallas, Vertonghen, Assou-Ekotto; Jenas (Van der Vaart 61), Livermore (Carroll 88); Lennon, Sigurdsson (Kane 81), Bale (Townsend 77); Defoe.

In Other News…
Martin O’Neill revealed he is fretting over the availability of Stephane Sessegnon and Phil Bardsley only eight days before the new season gets underway. The Benin international is of particular concern to the Black Cats boss – he has failed to feature at all in pre-season and his fitness must now surely be a major worry ahead of their trip to Arsenal a week tomorrow. Talking to the local press yesterday, O’Neill went on to say:

Sessegnon pulled out of training the other day and Phil Bardsley has had a bit of a setback with his ankle injury as well. We’ll have to assess those two. They’re going for scans tomorrow morning. Sessegnon’s obviously an important player for us and it’s a concern. But in the overall scheme of things, it might not be such a bad thing. I thought he got tired towards the back end of last season because he had played all the games for us and under a lot of pressure to do well. In the long-term, it might not be so bad but in the short-term, I would obviously like him to have some proper football before the season kicks off.

Brett Holman is keen to win a role in “the hole” for Aston Villa for the season ahead. The summer signing from AZ Alkmaar has mainly been utilised from a wide position over pre-season so far but his versatility earned him plenty of game time in the position with his national side – a factor that he hopes will help him stake a claim on Paul Lambert’s first-team thinking. Holman – who has notched twice in the club’s recent friendlies revealed:

I like to play in behind the strikers and I’m an attacking player. I like to always go forward to create goals, score goals and defensive wise it’s not in my thinking really. When I first moved to Holland it was my aim to move into that role and I sort of moved from left to right. At AZ I played from the left side coming inside and with the Australian national team I play in behind the strikers.

I currently have a Friedel - Federici combination, however I am having doubts about tottenham's ability to keep cs especially with AVB. Would you recommend I use the 10m to get a 6.0m keeper that plays week in week out+ cerny?

    1) Is it worth bringing any REA players into this team for their DGW?
    2) Best 4.0m defender to bring in to rotate with these guys?

    Friedel, Green
Ivanovic, Clichy, Cuellar, Hughes, XXX (4.0m)
    Mata, Bale, Lampard, Noble, Maloney
    Aguero, Tevez, Graham

      1) Maybe Federici for Friedel of if you want to downgrade Maloney/Noble to Guthrie and then get Terry/Lescott instead.
      2) West Ham ain't bad from what I've just checked in this 3 cheapies rotation.

      1) No, you have 3 Chelsea so it means a hit in GWK 3 or bench one of them.
      2) I went for Clyne as one of my cheap defenders but you have plenty of choices (mainly the promoted sides)

I think Aguero & Tevez may be overkill on a seperate note, if City win a GWK 1-0 then you're going to be struggling for big points and it limits your captain choice

Cheers for the reply. Plan is to lose Lamps & Ivanovic by GW3 and then bench Mata. Clyne seems to be popular - might have a look at him - is he as nailed on as Fonte?

I agree re Aguero and Tevez, but the same can be said for say Aguero & Silva/Yaya. Also, if they win heavily then there's a good chance they'll both score well. It's a gamble, but I think GW1 and GW3 are great fixtures for them.

Clyne seems to be and very attacking, I did have Fonte in my initial draft but seems like you will get more "attachking" points from Clyne.

The front spots are so precious personally I would never double up in that area, mid/def maybe. Plus City have so many other options at the moment will both Aguero and Tevez play 90mins..... so 20m+ I'd want guarantee of mins

          Hope this helps

I think you should replace Walters maybe with McClean/Pienaar and also find 0.5 to get yourself a 2nd keeper as De Gea won't play all games. If you are adamant that you want to stick with a 4.0 keeper then switch it off Cerny as he has high ownership and is likely to fall in price when people realise he doesn't play.

Judging by SAF's comments which mentioned a battle between DDG & Lindy, DDG doesn't look nailed on - in which case you definitely need a 2nd playing keeper at the very least.

Clichy not close to nailed on, especially with Kolarov preferred for the 3-5-2. Gorkss not looking that encouraging. Clark plays for Lambert. Bad fixtures for Walters and Yaya plays too deep too often.

this is my second season playing fantasy football and did alright last year. looking to put a lot more effort this year (mainly as theres now money involved)

after much tinkering ive came up with a half decent squad i think for the first 3-4 gw's and obviously ill be swapping a couple of players in that time

if you could RMT and make any suggestions as to who i could swap at any time that would be great

    Green - Ruddy

    Bardsley - Lescott - Hangelaand - Alex Pearce - A. Cole

    J.McClean - Silva - Noble - Maloney - Bale

Strong Mid and similar front 3 to most..... only weakness is GK's/DEF but suppose "rough with the smooth" and I gather you will only ever play 3 at the back anyway.

I would be tempted to swap Dawson though to a 5m DEF who is guaranteed games like Colocinni.

Some input on line up below be lovely chaps. I am not sure on my forwards at all, they all have potential, but still skeptical.

    Krul, Jaaskelainen

Cuellar, Shawcross, Cole A, Fabio, Demel

Bale, Yaya Toure, Valencia, Mata, Allen

    Ba, Graham, Torres

Cole A => Lescott after DGW

Would be looking to upgrade Torres, but if he *actually* starts to score, he might remain. And once DGW over, will be Cole => Lescott

Krul/Jaask is a novel combination but not sure about rotation, is it good? There are some other tempting keepers at 5.5 too

Nice defenders though I'd save 0.5 by taking Wilson over Shawcross

Allen isn't a points prospect and would stay away from Valencia for a few reasons - rotation, reduced goal threat and deployment at RB for example

Ba suffers from Cisse, and Torres having a distant friendly is pushing the gamble a bit too far

Allen is not a great option when moving to lpool. Bad fixtures.

So, ladies and gentlemen, what is different about this years "generic" teams that will make them so much more successful than previous seasons?

A generic team is usually a good way to start because they tend to be reliable and ensure a soli start.

One of the key things to avoid is unproven PL players . Or at least we should keep this to a minimum. Thats usually a good rule of thumb. If you have lots then you'd be risking a lot. I'm not sure if there were more last season but I fear there is a lot in many RMT's

Not really. Countless people were told off getting Aguero at the start and were advised to get Torres instead, me being new to this FF game I was one. Another was Mata, who scored on debut and churned out some consistent returns. Also, I was rubbished out of getting a certain Everton striker once he joined by a certain regular poster, but that was my own doing really. People need to follow their gut more, and avoid these "generic" picks just because loads of people on here have them.
But I do get what you are saying, too many risks is dangerous.

        Both options have Chelsea.

The reason B is under consideration is you have Mata (who I consider the most nailed on of Chelsea's mids, whatever that might entail) instead of Torres, who has now been confirmed to have an extra International match and a lot of flight time to go with it.

And with having Rooney I max out my £100m spend from the get go, Spending money in this game rather than leaving money on the bench is never such a bad idea.

There's a lot to be said for A too, but, you know.

I'm not sold on Friedel mind you or Spurs defence in general but I don't rate Arsenal's CS prospects for the start of the season either. If you could downgrade Maloney (who I think will flop) to maybe Guthrie then you could get De Gea in instead.
