Fabio Borini nets on his Anfield debut as Liverpool ease past FC Gomel in the Europa League. Joe Allen moves closer to completing his move to Merseyside, Spurs slump to a 2-0 loss at Valencia, Martin O’Neill is sweating on the fitness of Stephane Sessegnon, while Brett Holman is determined to nail down a role in “the hole†at Villa next season:

Liverpool 3 FC Gomel 0
With Joe Allen watching in the stands, Brendan Rodgers rolled out his first-choice backline for Liverpool’s second-leg Europa League qualifier last night. Steven Gerrard was the further forward of the midfield three, while Luis Suarez and Stewart Downing flanked Fabio Borini up front. Borini made an instant impact on his first home start since joining up at Anfield from Roma but it was Suarez who caught the eye; he provided a pair of assists, in addition to having seven efforts over the 90 minutes and, intriguingly, also took a direct free-kick. Gerrard had chances aplenty, too – he grabbed his side’s second and struck the post – while the Liverpool skipper also shared corners with Stewart Downing. Glen Johnson served a reminder of his attacking potential from deep by hammering home the Reds’ third to ensure their progress to the next round.

Post-match, Rodgers admitted he was keen to keep Daniel Agger at the club, despite the attentions of Man City. The Liverpool boss revealed the Dane is crucial to his plans for the campaign ahead, saying:

There’s nothing new to add. He’s very important for me. I like to have a playmaker at the back. With Daniel, this is his game – building from behind, stepping out with the ball and making passes and you see his commitment to the cause. For me there’s no update because we don’t want to sell him. He’s a player who is very important for me and it will remain that way.

Rodgers then went on to concede that Allen is close to sealing a move from Swansea, with the midfielder expected to undergo a medical on Merseyside later today:

It’s obviously imminent. If he is up here, it is a sign there has been good communication with Swansea and hopefully over the next 24 hours we can conclude it.

Liverpool Starting XI: Reina; Johnson, Agger, Skrtel (Carragher 76), Enrique; Lucas (Spearing 86), Shelvey (Adam 76), Gerrard; Downing, Borini, Suarez

Valencia 2 Spurs 0
With the news that Scott Parker has been ruled out of the start of the season after undergoing an Achilles operation, Andre Villas-Boas has real problems in the Spurs double-pivot. Jermaine Jenas and Jake Livermore were handed the deep-lying central midfield roles last night but failed to impress and, with Sandro still on Olympic duty with Brazil, the lack of options is having a knock-on effect on Gylfi Sigurdsson. The Icelandic international lined up in “the hole†behind Jermaine Defoe and was handed corner kick duties but the introduction of Rafael Van der Vaart for Jenas was to Sigurdsson’s detriment, with the latter shifted into a more defensive role as the Dutchman took his place alongside Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon in the attacking midfield three.

Tottenham Starting XI: Friedel; Walker (Naughton 77), Gallas, Vertonghen, Assou-Ekotto; Jenas (Van der Vaart 61), Livermore (Carroll 88); Lennon, Sigurdsson (Kane 81), Bale (Townsend 77); Defoe.

In Other News…
Martin O’Neill revealed he is fretting over the availability of Stephane Sessegnon and Phil Bardsley only eight days before the new season gets underway. The Benin international is of particular concern to the Black Cats boss – he has failed to feature at all in pre-season and his fitness must now surely be a major worry ahead of their trip to Arsenal a week tomorrow. Talking to the local press yesterday, O’Neill went on to say:

Sessegnon pulled out of training the other day and Phil Bardsley has had a bit of a setback with his ankle injury as well. We’ll have to assess those two. They’re going for scans tomorrow morning. Sessegnon’s obviously an important player for us and it’s a concern. But in the overall scheme of things, it might not be such a bad thing. I thought he got tired towards the back end of last season because he had played all the games for us and under a lot of pressure to do well. In the long-term, it might not be so bad but in the short-term, I would obviously like him to have some proper football before the season kicks off.

Brett Holman is keen to win a role in “the hole†for Aston Villa for the season ahead. The summer signing from AZ Alkmaar has mainly been utilised from a wide position over pre-season so far but his versatility earned him plenty of game time in the position with his national side – a factor that he hopes will help him stake a claim on Paul Lambert’s first-team thinking. Holman – who has notched twice in the club’s recent friendlies revealed:

I like to play in behind the strikers and I’m an attacking player. I like to always go forward to create goals, score goals and defensive wise it’s not in my thinking really. When I first moved to Holland it was my aim to move into that role and I sort of moved from left to right. At AZ I played from the left side coming inside and with the Australian national team I play in behind the strikers.

Thoughts on the mid price range of strikers? I.e. Borini, Bent, Jelavic, Tevez, Suerez, P.Cisse, Biboteli

Allot of potential and Value for money. Many of us overlook them in favor of the two big hitters and a budget striker. The big hitters obviously bring captaincy material, but do we get value for our bucks with two, e.g. Aguero and Rooney.

For those costs, your going to want an average of 7 points per 90 minutes played to come ahead of the cost curve. They will probably achieve that, but both players got points in purple patches last season and lost form at times, so is having two optimal?

    Just food for thought..

I have a draft with Jelavic - Tevez - Suarez that looks VERY tempting... the Capt choice is bugging me tho, its soo important.
As long as the big strikers get about 200 points, im good.. if someone does a "Van Persie" and hits the 250+ mark, im fckd

I've seen, quite a few times, over the past week or so how Tevez may well be a good pick for the first week but after that you'll need Aguero. That Tevez'll be a massive rotation risk, but seemingly not Aguero. Why?

Last season Aguero was nailed on because Balo was often injured/suspended, Dzeko went off the boil and Tevez was playing golf.

My point is, if they're all fit and there (not playing golf, Carlos!) I expect there to be a fair bit of rotation for all City strikers, particularly when the Champions League kicks off. I could just about stomach a £9m striker missing the odd game or coming off at the 60 minute mark quite often, but this happening to an £11.5m striker I just couldn't. (Plus you could well add Ade into all this seeing as he's still there'n'all).

I'm not saying Aguero won't play more minutes than the others, but I do expect more rotation for all, and so his game time being less than last season and mass frustration at times. Just my two pennies worth.

I'm not saying Aguero won't play the most out of the City strikers, or won't be the "first choice" striker. My point is that with all of them there it will impact the minutes, and so points, of all of them. Aguero included.

If Tevez didn't have a tantrum in Munich Aguero would most certainly not have played as many minutes as he did in the PL last season. There'd have been more rotation. Aguero was basically all Mancini could rely on at times. (Balo injured/suspended, Tevez away).

Yeah don't double up Swansea attack. Sinclair and Petric if you rate Sincalir over Graham. If not, McLean, Walters, Larsson and N'Zogbia are all interesting picks. Ramires too but you have Hazard

Not seen in many RMTs, though presumably there are better options for that price and WBA have not the easiest of opening fixtures maybe?

I usually buy him at some point in the season. He tends to go on a run that just goes unnoticed as well, consistently picking up 5's & 6's for a few weeks. Nothing spectacular, but it adds up.

back to square one. after much deliberation and changes aplenty, I have gone back to the team I first set out when the prices were released. The cheapo defenders rotate well. As do the goalies. And Graham looks a good bet for the first 8 GWs. Any thoughts?

    Friedel, Federici

    Cole, Lescott, Cuellar, Gorrks, Demel

    Kagawa, Hazard, Sinclair, Maloney, Noble

    Rooney, Aguero, Graham

Risks are Kagawa and Lescott, I guess. Is Hazard nailed on in your view, fine FFS folk?

      It's pretty good but...

Double Reading at the back. Our survey says eh-eh.

I like the cheapish side of your midfield but Kagawa and Hazard are new to the EPL. You might want to only punt on one (Hazard is "nailed on" IMO) and go with a safer option on the other.

Nice strikeforce but you'll now be playing at least one (perhaps two) of Graham, Malonely and Noble every week. Do a few mock lineups for the first few gameweeks and see.

      Lescott/Cole/ShawX/Colo/McCartney

Not a fan, very similar to one of the first teams I set out...

Cuellar doesn't rotate particularly well with Gorkss and Demel

Hazard is a risk but should get good game time

No guarantees Kagawa will play much to begin with

      Don't like Sinclair

I'd only have 1 of Maloney and Noble, not both.

Thanks to all for comments. I'll have a think about Cuellar and re-look at fixtures. I thought they rotated pretty well. Between them, over the first 10 weeks you get:

STO+che, RDG, FUL, nor, SUN, WIG, swa, SOT, FUL, AVL

Kagawa, I agree, is a risk. Will see how things stand nearer 18th.

his style is very tempting, he is involved in almost every liverpool attack but at the end of the day, he's just not going to earn u points. can't finish, can't earn baps. avoid

Because he's actually a very good footballer and was desperately unlucky not to score quite a lot more last year.

Because he's awesome and his stats are not bad considering he missed loads of last season for the Evra thing.

    So far, I've got:

    Ruddy, Rudd

    Hangeland, Lescott, Taylor (Barnett, Fonte)

    Michu, Yaya, Carzola, Bale (Allen)

    Borini, Tevez, Torres

1.5m in the bank. Any exciting alternatives to Tevez?

Borini was clearly cutting in from the left last night and Suarez was the central striker, should be a big season for Suarez this.

Downing had 1 bad season and is now labelled a no go... He's playing as a wing forward now under Rodgers, definite bargain at that price for me.

If Liverpool buy Dempsey/Walcott/Johnson/other wide player then Downing doesn't get in the team, if not then £6.5m is a tremendous price.

As I said before. Two seasons over 160 points, at £6.5m I'll have him at some point, no doubt. He was brilliant of FPL while at Villa.

I still maintain he didn't have *that* bad of a season IRL. Don't get me wrong it was not a vintage year but you also have to consider his job was to whip in crosses towards a compeltely out of form striker for a lot of the season.

That and KKs tactics were not great. If he looks like nailing down a starting place I will definitely own him during good patches of fixtures.

Watched a lot of Downing last year and he was largely poor. Can still come good though but I think he's only in the team whilst a new wide player is recruited.
