Shane Long is amongst the goals as West Brom ease past Forest to extend their unbeaten run to five games. Michael Kightly notches for Stoke on his debut as the Potters register their fourth consecutive 1-1 draw, while West Ham produce a similar scoreline at FC Braga thanks to a last-gasp equaliser from Winston Reid:

Nottingham Forest 0 West Brom 2
Steve Clarke welcomed back Chris Brunt and Steven Reid as the Baggies extended their unbeaten run to five matches with a comfortable cruise at the City Ground. Liam Ridgewell is a concern, though, after limping off at half-time with a thigh problem, while Jerome Thomas missed out with a niggle picked up in the previous match. In terms of formation, West Brom rolled out a 4-3-3 with Shane Long flanked by Peter Odemwingie and Zoltan Gera, with James Morrison the most advanced of the central midfielders. Morrison was a threat early on and teed up Youssouf Mulumbu for the opener before Long dusted himself down to slot home a spot-kick after being fouled in the box; the goal, his second of pre-season, the perfect response to the recent arrivals of Markus Rosenberg and Romelu Lukaku as the competition for striking berths heats up.

West Brom Starting XI: Foster; Reid (Jara 69), McAuley (Dawson 62), Olsson (Tamas 62), Ridgewell (Jones 46); Yacob (Hurst 81), Mulumbu (Thorne 81) Morrison (El Ghanassy 66); Odemwingie, Long (Fortune 66), Gera (Brunt 69).

Greuther Furth 1 Stoke 1
Tony Pulis handed new boys Michael Kightly and Geoff Cameron their Stoke debuts against the Bundesliga newcomers last night. Both players showed their versatility in the 1-1 draw; Kightly started on the left wing before switching to the right later on, while Cameron began the game in central midfield but shifted into the heart of defence after the Potters boss made a host of changes. Kightly was the chief protagonist for his new club; the former Wolves man scored with his first touch and teed up Ryan Shotton, only for the latter to hit the post. Asmir Begovic and Thomas Sorensen were handed a half apiece between the posts, while Matthew Upson continued alongside Ryan Shawcross at centre-half due to Robert Huth’s absence. Upson hardly covered himself in glory though; he gave away the spot-kick that led to the home side’s equaliser before making way on the hour mark.

Post-match, Pulis revealed the club are expected to sign Dynamo Kiev left-back Goran Popov on a season-long loan on Monday; a move that will surely place real question marks over the game of Marc Wilson in the Potters’ backline next term. The Stoke boss also gave an update on Robert Huth – the German has returned home after being hospitalised with viral meningitis earlier this week and is expected to return to light training at some point in the next few days:

It’s a massive bonus that he has recovered so well because we were really concerned that it was the serious strain at one point. He’s a bit weak at the moment, so it’s too early to say when he will be back. We’ll have to take it one step at a time, but he’s a tough character and I know he won’t want to miss out on the start of the season if that is at all possible.

Stoke Starting XI: Begovic (Sorensen 46); Wilkinson (Jerome 60), Shawcross, Upson (Palacios 60), Wilson; Pennant, Whelan (Whitehead 46), Cameron, Kightly (Delap 76); Walters (Ness 65), Crouch (Jones 65).

Braga 1 West Ham 1
Sam Allardyce rolled out a 4-3-3 formation last night, with Ricardo Vaz Te and Modibo Maiga swapping wings on either side of Carlton Cole up front. Elsewhere, James Tomkins started in central midfield, with James Collins continuing alongside Winston Reid in the heart of defence. Matt Taylor came on as a sub midway through the second half and was handed a role on the left of the front three, with Maiga moving centrally. Intriguingly, Vaz Te shared direct free-kicks with Noble, while Tomkins grabbed an assist for Reid’s late, late equaliser after nodding down a Taylor corner.

West Ham Starting XI: Jaaskelainen, Demel, Reid, Collins (O’Neil 76), O’Brien, Tomkins, Diame (Moncur 84), Noble, Vaz Te, Maiga, Cole (Taylor 71)

Beavis takes the reins at SC Bastia

Following the promotion from Ligue 2 after a very successful campaign in which SC Bastia won the league by 6 points and amassed the best goal difference (+25), the board of directors has surprisingly decided to appoint the inexperienced 22-year old Beavis as their new manager.

This decision has left the previous manager, Frédéric Hantz, very disappointed and has simply reiterated the ever-changing and unforgiving circumstances in which football is being run in the modern day. It is reminiscent of the unfair way in which Vicente del Bosque was not offered a new contract back in 2003 for Real Madrid despite winning the league for in 2001 and 2003, as well as the Champions League in 2000 and 2002. Hantz will be hoping to follow in del Bosque’s footsteps and prove his doubters and previous employers wrong.

SC Bastia will similarly be hoping that they do not eat humble pie and that Beavis can lead them to a respectable finish in Ligue 1. Beavis himself will be hoping that his experienced players like Jerome Rothen, who played in the 2004 Champions League final for Monaco, and the captain Yannick Cahuzac will lead by example and try to push the team forward in what has been described as a ‘new era’ by the board of directors.

Beavis also took the time to introduce himself and point out that not only did SC Bastia have top players, but now they also had a top manager. Following his 580th overall finish in last year’s season, he dubbed himself ‘The Amazing One’ and said that the SC Bastia fans had nothing to fear this year, as well as promising them European qualification at the very least.

Although this would be described by most as farfetched and unrealistic, you cannot fault Beavis’ ambition and it will be very interesting to see how the Ligue 2 champions will fare against France’s big boys.

However much I tinker with my team I keep coming back to this:

    Friedel, Federici
    Terry, Saylor, Cuellar, Boyce, Gunter
    Mata, VDV, Kagawa, Noble, Maloney
    Aguero, Torres, Graham

Nothing in bank. Will decide after GW1 how and when to get rid of 2-3 Chelsea players.

    Thoughts appreciated.

Yeah, Kagawa's gametime is a concern but he's a quality player with good fixtures. Even if he doesn't start every game he will get off the bench and could still score. Its an early season punt and can easily be sold after a few weeks once Utd's fixtures turn.

I'm convinced that VDV is a better option than Bale when fit. I'm bound to need to transfer him out at some point but you can say that about every player in the team.

Fair point(s). I love VDV, but he is one of those I will take the 'wait and see' stance on. So injury prone and with Siggy in the mix I'm not convinced. Kagawa could prove to be a must, especially if United don't land RVP.

Popov is gonna start. Definitely. He is Macedonian Gareth Bale if I can compare to a similar type of player. So quick, wonderful skills, quick, so attacking and has CL experience. I expect to be first choice way above Wilson. 4.5m is fair price according to me. He is so gonna be in my team. He is capable for goals and assists too.

Which team do you prefer (differences in CAPITALS)

    A) Reina - Cerny
    Lescott - Ferdinand - Williams - Demel - Barnett
    SILVA - Lampard - HOLMAN - Maloney - Guthrie
    Aguero - TORRES - Graham

2.5m spare for Lamps -> Bale and Torres -> Rooney

    B) Reina - Cerny
    Lescott - Ferdinand - Williams - Demel - Barnett
    MATA - Lampard - NANI - Maloney - Guthrie
    Aguero - SUAREZ - Graham

0.5m spare for Lamps -> siggy/vdv and mata -> silva

You are probably thinking I'm a complete idiot for including reina. However I made my prediction for the three teams that will concede the least goals over the course of the season (city, utd and liverpool) so I wanted to cover the defence of each of those three teams. Reina will play every match if not suspended or injured and I have faith that he can get 15+ clean sheets. Lescott should start regularly for city and I may have to change ferdinand with whoever ferguson seems to prefer.

    So basically the choice is
    A) Torres (Rooney after gwk 2), Silva, Holman
    B) Suarez,MATA (swapped with Silva in gwk 2) Nani can easily be swapped or downgraded with other utd midfielder

Don't let maloney's price turn you off if he gets regular game time he may turn out to be heavily underpriced. Guthrie will hardly be used I'll be using demel and barnett much more often than guthrie.

Silva isn't playing preseason, prob still being rested after Euros. Toure is playing scoring goals and 2m cheaper. Goals conceded doesn't always make great keeper points, clean sheets and save bonus's do. Believe me I hope the Reds concede nothing but they take their chances unlike last season. But winning 30 games 4-1 and keeping 8 clean sheets means 30 goals conceded by Reina but terrible points in FF. I'm going for Mignolet, 1m cheaper, but close enough in FF points and with a strengthened Sunderland defence this season.

Wilson has terrible fixtures and may not be first choice now Stoke have signed this Popov bloke. Not keen on Allen as an FPL option, if you go with that midfield you may as well get a 4.5m as 5th choice. I wouldn't go with that midfield though, there is bound to be at least 1 good budget option and the attack is a little light.

It actually hit me that all our teams are a little messed up. As the days pass, it seems less and less likely that either RVP or Dempsey are going to leave their respective clubs. These two are almost must-haves really. And at their prices...these teams will be ripped up. Personally I'm going to ignore RVP regardless of where he goes, unless the saga is resolved as opposed to put on hold. With Clint, however, I strongly believe he's a must-have. Such a goal machine. Thoughts?

Good post Lil H. Less worried about RVP because he'll cost the earth and you have to wonder if he can repeat last season's form and stay fit. I agree Dempo would be one who'd be nailed on for my team if there weren't doubts over his fitness, form and future.

Morning all, great to see the variations in squad selection on here. Really interesting choices that's given me food for thought when it comes to mine. Few burning issues I've been racking my brains about which I hope you all can help with - see below. Please list the letter and your answer with justification. Ta

    a) Who do you think is going to be more productive in the early GW's of the season - P Cisse or Ba? A little concerned that Ramadan might affect the latter's early season form, but he's apparently had a good pre season so far.
    b) Decent alternative to Federici around the 4.5-5.0 mark with good rotation and clean sheet potential?
    c) What is "grav"?!
    d) Williams or Hangeland at the back?
    e) Is Torres likely to play in this Spain friendly in midweek against Puerto Rico?

Like this. I've got a similar team but stronger in midfield and weaker up-front.

Am I right to side-step Chelsea's midfield talent, at least for the first few weeks to see who plays? Arsenal seem to have kinder fixtures also..

Depends how much of a risk taker you are. Get it right and you could get yourself a nice early lead.

Saying Chelsea's opening fixtures are harder than Arsenal's, is just completely wrong!!

    Rmt please lads many thanks

Foster, given ( just want two keepers to leave alone and swap each week )

    Clichy, fabio, cueller, Rangel,Koscielny,Rangel
    Bale,Michu,mata,Mcclean,pienaar
    Aguero(c),Petric,bent

Vidic Rooney Torres terry Defoe Sinclair hart lescott nasri Valencia and walker are players I like but I really found that last season I had awful balance early on and player the fixtures to much wasted a wild card so I want to play more solid and long term than tunnel vision whos going to do well this game week.
    Thanks for views simon
