While we’re always a little cynical when it comes to withdrawals prior to international friendlies, Alan Pardew clearly has plenty to ponder ahead of Newcastle’s Gameweek 1 opener against Spurs. Having watched his side lose 4-1 to Cardiff at the weekend, the Magpies boss is keen to rally his troops in time for Saturday evening’s home clash with Andre Villas-Boas’ side but this morning he revealed he has several first-team concerns on the horizon…

Up front, both Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse are struggling for fitness. The pair missed out against Cardiff, with Pardew handing Shola Ameobi the lone striker role in a 4-4-1-1, which saw Jonas Gutierrez play in “the hole” – a possible sign of things to come should the Senegal strikers fail to recover from their respective injuries.

Bearing in mind that Newcastle then travel to Greece to face Atromitos in the Europa League on Thursday August 25 before their Gameweek 2 visit to Chelsea only two days later, it’s fair to say that Pardew will likely be cautious with his team selection for fear of any long-term absence.

“Papiss has got a slight hamstring we think he will recover by Tuesday or Wednesday. Demba has a shin injury which he has carried for a week or so. So we took him out of the game on Tuesday.”

There are plenty of other concerns, aside from the two forwards. Pardew also conceded that Hatem Ben Arfa is all but out of the Spurs game due to a knee problem, while Yohan Cabaye’s lack of match fitness is a big worry. Ben Arfa’s absence looks set to boost the first-team chances of Sylvain Marveaux – the winger impressed in the recent 5-1 win over Hartlepool by bagging a brace – while Ryan Taylor’s versatility could be significant here; he has started in central midfield recently and could well fill in again.

Indeed, Taylor’s chances are increased by the news that Cheick Tiote is also a doubt after limping out of the Cardiff defeat with a calf problem. With skipper Fabricio Coloccini also battling to overcome a hamstring knock, Pardew is facing an anxious next few days as he prepares for the curtain to raise on the new campaign.

All this, of course, could be good news for Tottenham’s attacking assets in Gameweek 1. With the London outfit set to follow this trip with (WBA, NOR, rdg, QPR), plenty investment in Villas-Boas’ side is already expected. The idea of Gareth Bale, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Rafael Van der Vaart lining up against an under-strength Magpies will strengthen Fantasy faith as we look to nail down our squads prior to Saturday morning’s deadline.

Our full team news service will be restored very soon, collecting all the very latest and offering predicted lineups as the days tick by towards the kick-off.

      It's different.

      No Man U attackers.

      Kaboul not nailed on.

      Allen not that attacking and has poor fixtures.

    Need some help with my defence please
    Had one big hitter now thinking about 5 budget options 24mil or below

    Hangeland, Rangel, J Olsson, Fox, Cuellar

    Considering downgrading Fox to a 4mil, West Ham maybe, and then upgrading Rangel or Olsson to a 5.5 Arsenal or Everton

    Thanks for any advice

    **Repost lads – last time every option got only one vote each!! First to 5 wins!**

    I need to save 0.5m from somewhere to get this team – best option?

    a) Mata -> Lamps
    b) Noble -> Guthrie
    c) Schwarzer -> Jaask
    d) Kagawa/Nasri -> Yaya
    e) Something else

    Schwarzer, Begovic
    Ivanovic, Zabaleta, Cuellar, Clyne, Gunter
    Mata, Bale, Pienaar, Kagawa/Nasri, Noble
    Torres(c), Tevez, Graham

    Bank 2.0m (Torres -> Rooney in GW2)

    DDG - Federici
    Lescott - Hangeland - Williams - Demel - Clyne
    Hazard - Nasri - N'Zogbia - Maloney - Guthrie
    Aguero - Torres - Graham

    3.5m spare for Torres -> Rooney, Nasri -> Silva once silva is certain to start and later on Hazard -> Bale.

    I'm doubting swansea's defensive capabilities and I'd love 2 swap williams for enrique however I'm struggling to find 1.0m from my team.

      Kompany (7.5) returned 145 points last season..and he was almost the best defender available..
      The 9th best midfielder Sinclair (7) returned 151 points..

      Dont waste too much money on defenders..there is only that much they can bring..
      there could be more cleansheets in initial weeks...but only with those defensive teams..not Everton or Tots..

    Have been thinking back and forth regarding Graham vs Petric. I find it extremely hard to make up my mind on who to choose. My gut feeling is that graham is a better pick but then I find it hard to cover for Fulhams good run of fixtures where as if I choose Petric up front Michu seems to be a tempting option. If I choose Graham up front I think I will end up with someone like N'zog as a 6,5m MF so I guess it comes down to two will score the most of

    A) Graham & Nzog
    or
    B) Peric & Michu

    Who do you reckon will score the most? Tough one...

      With B you're dabbling with 2 unknowns. I'd rather stick with what I know until I've seen the others perform competitively.

    Vernon Anita flying over today to discuss personal terms with Newcastle.

    Should mean that he'd partner Tiote as the two holding midfielders, pushing Cabaye into the central attacking midfielder spot where he should have been played all along. Same position he plays for France and played for Lille. Makes Cabaye a more interesting FPL prospect as he is on a number of set pieces too. Jonas's playing time will probably be greatly reduced with Marveaux now fit and Anita on his way.

    Still very much in the market for a CB and a ST too.

        Jonas is a great player, but he is the only obvious route into the team for anita (if he agrees terms). I would expect jonas to get plenty of playing time though. It will be nice to have a team that doesn't pick itself for a change. With Marveaux back and looking good, we will have 6 great options for 4 spots.

      I would still expect Douglas to move there, it just has to wait until he qualifies for NL at the end of August - although I would prefer him to come to Ajax! The defence was abysmal yesterday.

      Anita is an excellent signing for Newcastle

        Hi pompey. I was hoping to see you on here. I remember that you said anita would be a great signing, but then it all went very quiet. If this comes off, for the reported 6-8 million quid it looks like being another quality signing. Especially when you compare it to 15 million for Allen! De Boer seems to be gutted at the prospect of losing him, which must be a good sign. Any idea what sort of wages he was offered by Ajax? He still has to agree terms with us.

          In absolute terms, not sure about his wages. Relatively though, he was offered a deal that would make him one of the top earners in the club.

          Everyone at Ajax would be gutted to lose him. I don't know what he is on or was offered but probably he wouldn't have been offered anything more than 20k a week. Personal terms wouldn't be a problem, he still didn't get into the Dutch squad so maybe he feels that going abroad will help with that too.

        If we do get douglas, then I will be delighted with our window, especially if we keep hold of all the main players. We could do with another striker too, but would be happy with an "unknown" with lots of potential as he wouldn't get much game time (in the league) this year, unless senegal qualify for the african nations.

          I quite like Serero and allegedly Janssen wasn't in the right frame of mind to play, but when he came on he was good. Defensivly we're very poor, albeit a bit unlucky they scored two out of 3 chances. Blind simply isn't good enough, I still have my doubts on Vermeer and we missed the creative influence of Eriksen abd Boerrigter badly. Were losing Anita and Janssen too now and hopefully/probably Van Der Wiel. Things arent looking great.

            well hopefully serero will put in a great performance soon. Blind is definitely not good enough a defender, although i didn't like the reaction of the fans to his substitution. I also don't like Vermeer, he was terrible last season, just don't trust him not to give a goal away at any given moment. Signings are needed desperately, Eriksen can't do everything, & we can't rely on Boerrigter to be fit all the time

    Green - Foster

    Williams - Hangeland - Lescott (at the moment) - McCartney - Cuellar

    Bale - Hazard - Pienaar - Michu - N' Zogbia

    Petric - Tevez - Torres

    What the overall lack of love / confidence in Hazard ?
    I have not yet managed to watch yesterdays game (so guess that may give the answer)

    If Chelsea did not have a DGW would anyone actually consider a a midfield option from them ?
    Is Hazard the 3rd choice behind Mata / Lampard ? and if so why

    (realise many questions are asked here, but few answred due to the RMTs) so sorry in advance

      To be honest, the fancied Chelsea mids all look out of sorts - Mata needs a bit more fitness/sharpness while Hazard looks as though he's going to take time to adjust. Lampard and Ramires are perhaps the safest options on offer in the Chelsea mid for the double then - albeit potentially less explosive.

    Why doesn't this site develop / buy a price changes tool? - it seems to be the one major element currently missing from the offering.
