Now a stone lighter after shedding his golf course weight, Carlos Tevez has once again emerged as a key player for Manchester City and Fantasy managers alike. The Argentine, who spent much of last season in exile after a spat with manager Roberto Mancini, was the star of last Sunday’s Community Shield victory over Chelsea, scoring a superb effort and overshadowing his compatriot, Sergio Aguero. But can he continue that form and keep the more expensive Aguero out of our Fantasy lineups?

One of the biggest attractions is the price difference between the pair, particularly in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, where Aguero has been priced at 11.5m in compared to Tevez’s 9m price tag. However, the difference in the Sky game is less marked with Tevez priced at 9.4m compared to Aguero’s 9.9m.

Another attraction is the post Community Shield comments from Roberto Mancini about Tevez being “a very important player†for City. With the side’s penalty taking, maverick striker Mario Balotelli still lacking match fitness and Edin Dzeko still out of favour as a starting striker, starts seem assured for Tevez for Man City’s opening games at least. But with Balotelli likely to be used sparingly during August, Aguero is set to retain penalty taking duties, arguably adding further weight to his hefty price tag.

Mark says…
I’ve been hesitant to consider Tevez over Aguero, for the simple reason that it seems inevitable that Roberto Mancini will look to give Mario Balotelli pitch time. My other concern is Mancini’s formation. The 3-4-1-2 looks to be a winning formula right now but the City boss is already indicating that he’ll abandon it once the real business gets underway. Even if it remains, I’m not sure how he builds both David Silva and Samir Nasri into his lineup, whilst keeping two strikers. I’m pretty sure they’ll be times when he’ll push Silva or Toure forward and abandon the idea of a pairing up front. For me, Aguero looks the most secure, regardless of the tactical scenario.

In the short-term, however, I have to admit I’m enormously tempted by the slimline Tevez. His goal and performance on Sunday was a clear indication of form and confidence and it seems nailed on that he’ll line up against Southampton. There’s every chance he could again steal the thunder from Aguero in that game and that 2.5 FPL difference can be invested to some effect elsewhere in our lineups. Will I be 100% that Tevez will take the field in a few Gameweek’s time? That’s the issue. For me, Aguero is a fire and forget option, by going with Tevez, it’s a question of cashing in on the short-term benefits and managing your way out of the situation later. After Sunday’s showing and the noise from the City camp, I might just be willing to take that on.

Andy says…
When I look at comparing two figures like Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero there is one thing that is always at the forefront of my mind – the Fantasy captaincy. The armband is the biggest duty for Fantasy Managers on any given Gameweek and, if I think I’m going to be spreading it about the Etihad stadium with regularity, I’ll make sure to pick the player that I think is not only most consistent and most likely to start games. That man, for me, without a shadow of a doubt, is Sergio Aguero.

However, in the first couple of months of the new season I really don’t see too many of Roberto Mancini’s men pushing the issue when it comes to captaincy. Given that inference I have to hark to the other dominant factor: price. While I think Aguero is more assured of pitch time, it doesn’t even begin to make up for the extra 2.5 in your pocket by opting for Tevez. As a player I prefer Aguero – exponentially so – but for the first couple of months of the season I’ll be managing with my head and leaving my heart at the door. Tevez will be in my team.

Paul Says…
It’s impossible to say over the long-term but, right now, he certainly looks to be. Tevez’s attitude has been praised by both Roberto Mancini and David Platt and the City boss has already stated he expects him to be an important player in the season to come – a sure sign of how he plans to utilise him. Aguero’s phenomenal debut season was, in part, helped by a number of factors –Tevez’s determination to force a move away from the Etihad and subsequent strop in the Allianz Arena, Mario Balotelli’s indiscipline and Edin Dzeko’s loss of form all meant that last year’s summer signing was too crucial to be left out at any point. Now that Tevez is 100% both physically and mentally, Mancini may well feel he can afford to slightly restrict Aguero’s game time when Mario Balotelli is fully-fit.

Personally, I feel that Tevez and Aguero could be handed roughly the same number of starts, with one or the other dropping out for Balotelli on occasion, while Edin Dzeko is mostly reduced to the role of impact sub. Bearing in mind this was a player who was priced at 12.0 at the start of last season, I reckon Tevez looks exceptional value at the moment for 9.0 and that 2.5 saving over Aguero has certainly won me over for just now.

Exactly the same train of thought for me regarding Chelsea's midfield. This is why I'm just going for Torres, any Chelsea goals and he'll surely be involved. Little to no rotation, for now, I think?

this choice is an important one, one that really MATA's. Hazard needs some alone time to settle in. Lamps easily has the capability to score you 4 points. Mata will do something in at least one of the games

Aah the horror question! Spending far too much time debating this one with myself!

At the moment I'm on Mata as I reckon he's likely to start both games and pick up a reasonable return from them both. All the others worry me in some way.

Hazard - lack of PL experience/CC performance.
      Ramires - attacking prowess.
Lampard - gametime and deep position.

Im staying away from Hazard and Ramires, too much uncertanity there. Currently I have Mata, but if I need .5 elsewhere I will be switching to Lampard to free up money. As long as you have Mata or Lampard I think you will get an alright amount of points.

Some people on here say he won't do well, some people say he won't get enough game time, I really don't know enough about him to be comfortable picking him for my team. Whichever Chelsea mid I pick will be my captain, and I just feel like its gotta be Mata or Lampard.

well yeah, but i see no reason why he wont play both games, i think people are going to get a bit of a shock with mata, just cant see him being as involved with hazard around, and ramires i reckon will thrive as he's very attacking minded, his link up play is superb, its ramires for me anyhow 🙂

I've opted for ramires for a number of reasons
      A) game time, I simply see him playing more mins than anyone else in the minefield. Plus great engine.
      B) price, if he happens not to play 7m sat on bench is less painful and his price allows other upgrades.
      C) I'd picked him before sunday but he looked good before the sending off.
      D) I don't trust Mata or hazard or lampard enough to perform.

Don't agree about him being almost certain to start both games, if anything I'd say it's more likely that he won't. He has Meireles, Essien, Ramires and Mikel as competition, played 90 in the CC, likely to play for England and then has 3 PL games in a short space of time.

michu's a risk, lampard could be too deep, u could go tevez instead of aguero as i dont see much difference between them at this early stage of the season and u could earn more points with the extra £2.5m. but apart from that its good, defence is decent and moneys pretty well shared (maybe Zab instead of lescott for an extra £0.5m) bales a must, and noble and kanu mis well as midfield support

Sounds a bit like I expected, being a great passer, he's unsurprisingly being used as the passing midfielder to link things up. Not as far back as Carrick though... I hope?

Just watched a video with all his moves from that game. Defo deeper than Fabs usually played, and far from the ubiquitous 'in the hole' thing. Great passer and holder of the ball though, should be really good. But less certain of the Fpl prospects now.

Thanks, definite picture building up. 9.0 sounding overpriced, but he may well help returns from both attack and defence. Looking at Arsenal defenders with a keener eye... when we have a good passer in the team, like Arteta for example, we keep the opposition away from our goal...

I'm not loving Siggy (where will he play?) and Pog (moving him to Graham/Petric/etc. is too hard).

      I'd suggest a re-think there.

But I like how you think re: defense. Much different than the current groupthink here. I agree.

I've spent the last week tearing through, getting close to the team i want.
Siggy has had a good pre season, more of a punt really to cover spurs fixtures.

Players like Puncheon are only sittin on bench.

Gazzaniga...he has quite an epic name hence his choice over Rudd lol

Stick with Pienaar then. Or go for McClean/Taarabt/Larsson/Hoolahan etc. and N'Zog. There's loads of decent options at 6/6.5

Well everyone, back for another season of graft! Hope everyone had/is having a good summer..

Tevez vs. Aguero certainly is the burning question. I like the look of my team better with Tevez in it but Aguero's ownership is frightening! I just keep reminding myself of the beastly scores Tevez racked up the season before last when he was essential, has much changed!?

My other burning question at the moment is Bent/Podolski & Michu/Taarabt OR Petric & Walcott. People seem to be forgetting the great run of form Walcott hit the tail end of last season. He is only owned by 5%, so he is a good differential but also has minimal risk as he is a proven FPL points scorer..

One last thing, does Podolski look to have penalty's now or will Arteta get involved?

        Cheers 🙂

He was a beast in 2010/11 and even towards the tail end of last season. Don't want to be left behind though if Aguero was to rip it up. I said all summer that Aguero would be the first name on my team sheet but things always change don't they!

Very difficult picking a team for the 1st day..

    A. Mata / Dyer / Kac (With Maloney, 2 big hitters in mid but 3 under 5.5)

    or

    B. Ramires / Michu / Taarabt ( 1 big hitter mid only but 3 mid priced options & 1 5m)

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.
