Now a stone lighter after shedding his golf course weight, Carlos Tevez has once again emerged as a key player for Manchester City and Fantasy managers alike. The Argentine, who spent much of last season in exile after a spat with manager Roberto Mancini, was the star of last Sunday’s Community Shield victory over Chelsea, scoring a superb effort and overshadowing his compatriot, Sergio Aguero. But can he continue that form and keep the more expensive Aguero out of our Fantasy lineups?

One of the biggest attractions is the price difference between the pair, particularly in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, where Aguero has been priced at 11.5m in compared to Tevez’s 9m price tag. However, the difference in the Sky game is less marked with Tevez priced at 9.4m compared to Aguero’s 9.9m.

Another attraction is the post Community Shield comments from Roberto Mancini about Tevez being “a very important player” for City. With the side’s penalty taking, maverick striker Mario Balotelli still lacking match fitness and Edin Dzeko still out of favour as a starting striker, starts seem assured for Tevez for Man City’s opening games at least. But with Balotelli likely to be used sparingly during August, Aguero is set to retain penalty taking duties, arguably adding further weight to his hefty price tag.

Mark says…
I’ve been hesitant to consider Tevez over Aguero, for the simple reason that it seems inevitable that Roberto Mancini will look to give Mario Balotelli pitch time. My other concern is Mancini’s formation. The 3-4-1-2 looks to be a winning formula right now but the City boss is already indicating that he’ll abandon it once the real business gets underway. Even if it remains, I’m not sure how he builds both David Silva and Samir Nasri into his lineup, whilst keeping two strikers. I’m pretty sure they’ll be times when he’ll push Silva or Toure forward and abandon the idea of a pairing up front. For me, Aguero looks the most secure, regardless of the tactical scenario.

In the short-term, however, I have to admit I’m enormously tempted by the slimline Tevez. His goal and performance on Sunday was a clear indication of form and confidence and it seems nailed on that he’ll line up against Southampton. There’s every chance he could again steal the thunder from Aguero in that game and that 2.5 FPL difference can be invested to some effect elsewhere in our lineups. Will I be 100% that Tevez will take the field in a few Gameweek’s time? That’s the issue. For me, Aguero is a fire and forget option, by going with Tevez, it’s a question of cashing in on the short-term benefits and managing your way out of the situation later. After Sunday’s showing and the noise from the City camp, I might just be willing to take that on.

Andy says…
When I look at comparing two figures like Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero there is one thing that is always at the forefront of my mind – the Fantasy captaincy. The armband is the biggest duty for Fantasy Managers on any given Gameweek and, if I think I’m going to be spreading it about the Etihad stadium with regularity, I’ll make sure to pick the player that I think is not only most consistent and most likely to start games. That man, for me, without a shadow of a doubt, is Sergio Aguero.

However, in the first couple of months of the new season I really don’t see too many of Roberto Mancini’s men pushing the issue when it comes to captaincy. Given that inference I have to hark to the other dominant factor: price. While I think Aguero is more assured of pitch time, it doesn’t even begin to make up for the extra 2.5 in your pocket by opting for Tevez. As a player I prefer Aguero – exponentially so – but for the first couple of months of the season I’ll be managing with my head and leaving my heart at the door. Tevez will be in my team.

Paul Says…
It’s impossible to say over the long-term but, right now, he certainly looks to be. Tevez’s attitude has been praised by both Roberto Mancini and David Platt and the City boss has already stated he expects him to be an important player in the season to come – a sure sign of how he plans to utilise him. Aguero’s phenomenal debut season was, in part, helped by a number of factors –Tevez’s determination to force a move away from the Etihad and subsequent strop in the Allianz Arena, Mario Balotelli’s indiscipline and Edin Dzeko’s loss of form all meant that last year’s summer signing was too crucial to be left out at any point. Now that Tevez is 100% both physically and mentally, Mancini may well feel he can afford to slightly restrict Aguero’s game time when Mario Balotelli is fully-fit.

Personally, I feel that Tevez and Aguero could be handed roughly the same number of starts, with one or the other dropping out for Balotelli on occasion, while Edin Dzeko is mostly reduced to the role of impact sub. Bearing in mind this was a player who was priced at 12.0 at the start of last season, I reckon Tevez looks exceptional value at the moment for 9.0 and that 2.5 saving over Aguero has certainly won me over for just now.

Are people going for federici alongside DDG due to the DGW, or because they except Reading to be the strongest defensively of the 4.5m keepers? I reckon West Ham will be better defensively than reading as they have premier experience and fat sam will set them up like chelsea against bayern for every game!! I don't think an extra point or two (or maybe minus points) for fedirici from the DGW should sway peoples thinking. I'm going for jaask.

But you will never choose to play jaask anyway. He will only fill in when DDG is rested. You are unlikely to choose Demel for many games anyway, so the chances of them playing in hte same game are pretty small. And if they do, it will be one where they have a good chance of a CS as you will have picked demel ahead of two other defenders.

Personally I'm not so convinced about West Hams defensive prowess. Reading did well defensively in the championship and deserve to be recognises as somewhat decent defensively. Of course almost all the time DDG will play anyway so there is no reason why we shouldn't cash in on the DGW

The DGW game is against Chelsea at stamford bridge!! There is as much chance of fedirici getting minus points, as there is of him earning a couple of (save) points.

Yeah but when comparing West Ham defence with Reading defence there is really nothing in it. I had Jaas but I just don't rate the Hammers defence. Also I have Noble so I'm also not that keen to double up. I know you have Guthrie so the reverse is true.

    Faultless plan...

    Schwarzer, (Begovic)
    Lescott, Zabaleta, Demel, (Cuellar), (Clyne)
    Bale, Mata, Lampard, Taarabt, Guthrie
    Torres(c), Tevez, (Graham)

    Bank 2.0m

    GW2: Torres -> Rooney
GW3: Lampard -> VDV/Nani/Kagawa (form and price movement depending)

All he needs is 1 penalty.... 😉

All he needs is one penalty, to make 3pts profit (2 + 5 - 4 = 3pts), after you factor in the hit that you will have to take at some point!! I'm not sure it is worth it!

Surely the -4 only comes into it if I take a hit?! I'm not planning to take any hits right now.

His gametime is the only concern for me, hopefully he only plays 45 mins for England this week!

Did you not see my post a couple of pages back?

Basically the jist was, that any planned transfer now, will inevitably lead to a hit at some point in the future.

So you could either do Lampard to Bale in GW2 or get Bale in GW1 and carry over the transfer for a more pressing time.

Sure, it will cost you an extra transfer, but that's different to costing you 4 points. For example, I might have transfers planned for GW2 & 3, but then if I plan to save one in GW4 then I can also carry forward a transfer (like the above) and I still haven't taken any hits.

Unless there is a week when you really don't want to make any transfers (rare due to injuries, form, fixtures changes, etc), then it will end up costing you 4 pts. Might not be today, might not be tomorrow, but one day, it will cost you 4 pts!! Unless you can somehow manage to go the season without needing to take a hit!!

Just seen it - looks to me like the differential match up over the first 20 weeks is:

Schwarzer/Bego: NOR, ARS, WBA, wig, sot, AVL, EVE, SUN, NEW, wba, NEW, tot, SOT

Migs/Bego: rea, REA, LIV, whu, liv, NEW, AVL, whu, QPR, nor, avl, sot, LIV

I'd vote that as being 6-5 to Schwarzer, but there's not much in it. Also, I'm more confident that Cuellar will start more than Hughes....

Yes. But for me Sunderland have more chance of a clean sheet than fulham. So if the fixtures are similar (even slightly in fulhams favour), I would still go for mignolet

Hmm, not sure about that - SUN have looked awful in pre-season and there's the potential (albeit small) rotation risk with Migs and Westwood. Also, and I'm not saying this will actually happen, but the projections on here have Fulham getting 1.2 more cleanies than SUN over the season....Are you going Hughes for your 4.5m or doubling up with Cuellar?

I haven't realized that. And have to say that I am suprised. How many clean sheets did Sunderland keep last season AFTER MON took over, compared with Fulham? I don't know the answer but am sure sunderland kept more.

I am currently deciding between DDG + Jaask, or Miglnolet + Begovic. I will have cuellar regardless

Hmm, that I'm not sure of - could well be more as SUN did tighten up after he arrived. Doesn't Migs rotate pretty well with Fed also?

Fed fills in ok for the weeks you really wouldn't want to play migs. Sun/Ful is where is is really at, but that's an extra 0.5m

    Thoughts?
    DDG/Cerny (Open to other 10.0 GK combo's)
    Ivan / Zab / Cuellar / Clyne / McCartney
    Bale / Kagawa / Pienaar / Maloney / Guthrie (or other 4.5)

    0.5 in the bank

Yip, main man in Liverpool team, playing his way back to form, played a blinder in Europa League qualifier last week. Torres playing well too but lots of attacking Chelsea midfielders to share the goals with. As for people keeping money in the bank to get Rooney in GW2? Can't see that buzz myself cos he'll be supporting Van Persie and almost will score less than previous, class, seasons.

1 defeat, 2 draws, 3 wins preseason. If that's really bad then who in the PL had a really good preseason. The defeat and 2 draws were when Suarez was playing for Uruguay in the Olympics. They were not good.

It's your opinion man. No offence meant.I still don't see 1 loss, 2 draws and 3 wins with a new system and a less than nailed-on 11 as being very bad. Of course he's a risk with their fixtures. More of a risk cos he'll get dogs abuse from the crowd during away games all season. Aguero, Rooney and Van Persie could easily get a bucket of goals in their opening games and Suarez get nothing, but they're pricey and I wan a decent fairly-balanced attacking midfield rather than hedging on a budget-breaking striker.

      Like it, just watch for-
      Kelly- does he start?
Petric vs Graham? but then guess you wld have 3 swansea
Kagawa- some people on here were unsure about his gw1 start due to playing in a riendly in Japan. I dont know if its true but just keep an eye on.
You will have a midfield sub dilema quite often, the other option is to downgrade one of you 6.5's to a 5.0 or even 4.5 and upgrde defence

Kelly is brilliant fulham coverage if he does start but I have no clue :/ I don't want a QPR defender just yet because of fixtures (I don't like any other team defences with £4.5m or below).
Personally I actually like Graham over Petric XD But because I have Michu (who I think will be quality) I wanted to have someone who rotated with the rest of my mid and attack.
In terms of the sub dilema I think I sorted everyone's fixtures so I should always have 3-5 Home players out of the mid and forwards and so I'll just bench the away players (though I'd find it very hard to do with Aguero or Rooney). Any 5 midfielder you recommend in case I drop pienaar? Who should I upgrade in defence with the extra 1.5?

I like Noble for 5.0, should be on pens and good fixtures. With the extra 1.0 you could change the Cole to Colo transfer to Cole to Lescott and then upgrade Gunter to Colo

There'll be a set figure of NTI (net transfers in) which make the player values rise by £0.1m. The NTI is usually around 25-30,000 transfers but varies season to season.
Player falls are trickier. If a player falls below his starting value then 10% of his total ownership have to sell him (NTO) ...except for players who have a very small ownership, say, under 5% of all managers. In this case it's random when he'll fall in value.
If a player rises, say Torres jumps to £10.2m after GW2... but then has no fixture in GW3 it'd see managers selling him, so in order to drop in value (but not below starting value) he'll need whatever the figure is for increases in price (again probably 25-30,000)

That's as simply as I can put it.

Once the season has started, player prices may change by £0.1m a day, based on activity in the transfer market.

Both the formula used to calculate this change and the time of the change include variable factors, and won’t be revealed to game players.

C&P'd from the FPL site, lots of people do know specific sites that can predict price rises/drops as the seasons progresses. Unfortunately I'm not one.

I'm thinking of having them both and Torres. All out CHE attack (mainly cause they don't look like they can defend)

You might have missed this reply earlier, as we have moved on, regarding getting lampard then switching him for another mid

"Unless there is a week when you really don’t want to make any transfers (rare due to injuries, form, fixtures changes, etc), then it will end up costing you 4 pts. Might not be today, might not be tomorrow, but one day, it will cost you 4 pts!! Unless you can somehow manage to go the season without needing to take a hit!!"

Haha, LET IT GO CHINA, let it go... 😉

I'm not planning on taking a hit to ditch Lamps, but even if I do end up taking one at some stage, it's not always a bad thing. Some hits are profitable, especially when a DGW is involved.

          One more go.........

I don't mean taking a hit for lampard. But a free transfer that you use to get rid of lampard could have been carried over to the next week. This would allow you to make two transfers in the future, rather than take a hit.

Don't get me wrong, if it was the lampard of 5 years ago (which he isn't) and was nailed on to play both games (which he absolutely isn't), then I would be all over him. But I don't think that there is enough points potential to make it worthwhile.

you will be in trouble after the first having to play the bench warmers or taking a hit to get chelski players out. why do you have Federici if you arent playing him?

Very similar team to mine. I think its good bar Rameres who you will need to trade at some point and may not get as many minutes as you hope in the DGW.

3 punts in midfield with Michu, Kagawa and Ramires. Maybe a rethink is in order.

Begovic is not nailed on as first choice either.

I think there's value to be found in Graham or Petric...wouldn't do that to my defense at the expense of that front line.

why would you put it on here if you don't want to change it anymore? just saying.
Get DDG instead of Ferdinand and get a cheap DF. Ramires is a waste, get pienaar. Pick either michu or graham (i suggest the latter) and get rid of one.

      Apart from that nice team

    DDG, Federici

    Cole, Zabaleta, Cuellar, Tierney, Demel
    VDV, Mata, Yaya, Piennar, Guthrie
    Tevez, Torres, Graham
