Now a stone lighter after shedding his golf course weight, Carlos Tevez has once again emerged as a key player for Manchester City and Fantasy managers alike. The Argentine, who spent much of last season in exile after a spat with manager Roberto Mancini, was the star of last Sunday’s Community Shield victory over Chelsea, scoring a superb effort and overshadowing his compatriot, Sergio Aguero. But can he continue that form and keep the more expensive Aguero out of our Fantasy lineups?

One of the biggest attractions is the price difference between the pair, particularly in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, where Aguero has been priced at 11.5m in compared to Tevez’s 9m price tag. However, the difference in the Sky game is less marked with Tevez priced at 9.4m compared to Aguero’s 9.9m.

Another attraction is the post Community Shield comments from Roberto Mancini about Tevez being “a very important player” for City. With the side’s penalty taking, maverick striker Mario Balotelli still lacking match fitness and Edin Dzeko still out of favour as a starting striker, starts seem assured for Tevez for Man City’s opening games at least. But with Balotelli likely to be used sparingly during August, Aguero is set to retain penalty taking duties, arguably adding further weight to his hefty price tag.

Mark says…
I’ve been hesitant to consider Tevez over Aguero, for the simple reason that it seems inevitable that Roberto Mancini will look to give Mario Balotelli pitch time. My other concern is Mancini’s formation. The 3-4-1-2 looks to be a winning formula right now but the City boss is already indicating that he’ll abandon it once the real business gets underway. Even if it remains, I’m not sure how he builds both David Silva and Samir Nasri into his lineup, whilst keeping two strikers. I’m pretty sure they’ll be times when he’ll push Silva or Toure forward and abandon the idea of a pairing up front. For me, Aguero looks the most secure, regardless of the tactical scenario.

In the short-term, however, I have to admit I’m enormously tempted by the slimline Tevez. His goal and performance on Sunday was a clear indication of form and confidence and it seems nailed on that he’ll line up against Southampton. There’s every chance he could again steal the thunder from Aguero in that game and that 2.5 FPL difference can be invested to some effect elsewhere in our lineups. Will I be 100% that Tevez will take the field in a few Gameweek’s time? That’s the issue. For me, Aguero is a fire and forget option, by going with Tevez, it’s a question of cashing in on the short-term benefits and managing your way out of the situation later. After Sunday’s showing and the noise from the City camp, I might just be willing to take that on.

Andy says…
When I look at comparing two figures like Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero there is one thing that is always at the forefront of my mind – the Fantasy captaincy. The armband is the biggest duty for Fantasy Managers on any given Gameweek and, if I think I’m going to be spreading it about the Etihad stadium with regularity, I’ll make sure to pick the player that I think is not only most consistent and most likely to start games. That man, for me, without a shadow of a doubt, is Sergio Aguero.

However, in the first couple of months of the new season I really don’t see too many of Roberto Mancini’s men pushing the issue when it comes to captaincy. Given that inference I have to hark to the other dominant factor: price. While I think Aguero is more assured of pitch time, it doesn’t even begin to make up for the extra 2.5 in your pocket by opting for Tevez. As a player I prefer Aguero – exponentially so – but for the first couple of months of the season I’ll be managing with my head and leaving my heart at the door. Tevez will be in my team.

Paul Says…
It’s impossible to say over the long-term but, right now, he certainly looks to be. Tevez’s attitude has been praised by both Roberto Mancini and David Platt and the City boss has already stated he expects him to be an important player in the season to come – a sure sign of how he plans to utilise him. Aguero’s phenomenal debut season was, in part, helped by a number of factors –Tevez’s determination to force a move away from the Etihad and subsequent strop in the Allianz Arena, Mario Balotelli’s indiscipline and Edin Dzeko’s loss of form all meant that last year’s summer signing was too crucial to be left out at any point. Now that Tevez is 100% both physically and mentally, Mancini may well feel he can afford to slightly restrict Aguero’s game time when Mario Balotelli is fully-fit.

Personally, I feel that Tevez and Aguero could be handed roughly the same number of starts, with one or the other dropping out for Balotelli on occasion, while Edin Dzeko is mostly reduced to the role of impact sub. Bearing in mind this was a player who was priced at 12.0 at the start of last season, I reckon Tevez looks exceptional value at the moment for 9.0 and that 2.5 saving over Aguero has certainly won me over for just now.

How does the Spurs front line roll out? Is VDV the player behind the striker, and thus marginally more likely to get more goals than say a winger like Bale who'll get the assists?

I'm swaying with Tevez merely because of price. Don't think there will be too much difference points-wise between him and Aguero unless CL rotation, injuries or another bust-up occurs.Hope Balotelli has a tantrum and goes AWOL for a few months. That 2.5 mil difference can fuel my midfield and be a huge difference in the ranks. Allows big hitters like Bale, Valencia, Lamps, Silva or Dempsey

Mata over Hazard, and Bale over Dempsey at least at the start of the season. Do you think Yaya will play far enough up the field to get points? I personally don't like Stoke or QPR's starting fixtures, so I would stay away from their defense. Kagawa is too much of a risk for me, but he could pay off. Liverpools first few games are bad so I would stay away from Allen, and I might try to go for a cheaper keeper rotation to free up money. Those are my thoughts, also I wouldn't stick with Torres for long after gameweek one, unless he is in good form.

Yeah, sorry for the tenuous link to the article let's just call this a standard RMT.

I'll explain my thinking behind this:

DG (obviously tempting at that price)

Jaask (might as well stump up another .5 to get a keeper that will play, no West Ham cover in defence)

Jenkinson (Gotta watch out for that Coquelin guy but I reckon he'll start the first game for Arsenal and give me a little time to work out which budget defenders are gonna catch fire)

Shawcross/Simpson (solid performers from last year to counteract the riskiness of my other defensive options)

Fabio (QPR bursting at the seams with new talent which means I predict they will be mid table or there abouts, attacking options too risky due to rotation/uncertainty but little old
Fabio will probably start every game and has a chance to score points on the attack)

Clyne (mega budget option - looking like he'll start for SOU)

MaTorres (DGW + predicting them to form a deadly partnership)

Kagawa (united cover, seems good value considering how he destroyed CL finalists munich)

Yaya (not totally convinced but should play every available minute and average a goal or assist each game which is good enough at that price)

        Bale (solid performer, tottenham cover)

Allen (thought he looked good value considering Rodgers will bum him at Anfield and play him all the time, considering downgrading to guthrie for DGW and upgrading Kag/yaya)

Tevez (let's not forget he won the golden boot season before last and mancini is back in love with carlo, so he will get minutes. risky but think his form in community shield speaks for itself, that's what tipped me over. another thing: he did pretty well when he was well fat at the end of last season, enough to justify a 9.0 pricetag? well know he's in 2010 form so the price is right)

Naismith (Signed as like for like replacement for Tim Cahill - maximum game time, frugal and stubborn Scottish manager, unlikely to change squad formation etc often, call it gut feeling if you don't agree with my reasoning.)

not gonna proof read that but at least i've justified it in my own head now.

        TL;DR: Allen > Guthrie Yaya/Kagawa > ????????

If I had to pick a team for the whole season now:

    De Gea - Green

Zabaleta - Colocinni - Cuellar (Tierney, Demel)

Bale - Carzola - Taarabt - Dyer (Noble)

    Rooney - Tevez - Torres

Okay, 5 of a front 8 for the season 😮

I have 8 of the 15 now which is nice, it's tempting to downgrade Vidic to fund that front line but at present I have aguero.

Midfield is just a matter of Lamps > Carzola, which is so tempting to do right away.

"There's every chance he could again steal the thunder from Aguero in that game and that 2.5 FPL difference can be invested to some effect elsewhere in our lineups ... it’s a question of cashing in on the short-term benefits and managing your way out of the situation later."

Unless for whatever reason (and keep in mind we're dealing with Tevez here) you need to sub him out right away and you're already transfer tied for the first few weeks getting rid of your Chelsea players. If Aguero puts in a hattrick against Southampton (not so unthinkable) and Tevez disappears, or worse, then you're stuck in a rut that I'm not sure is so easy to manage your way out of with any immediacy.

Tevez is a risk for at least the first few weeks. And at 9.0 an expensive risk (I only have 4 players in my entire squad at 9.0 or more) - we're not talking about a punt on Taarabt here.

Speaking of which, I'm already at a loss trying to work out which 6.5 midfielder to put in my team. There's a wealth of cheap talent and potential in midfield - the most natural place for people to put their Tevez savings - and this only reduces your chance to cash in on that.

    I'm not sold.

I should have made it more clear - the transfer trouble I was talking about was re: how you invest your 2.5 savings, meaning that a double transfer (or more, depending how its spread) might be necessary to upgrade Tevez->Aguero in a satisfactory way.

Well, you know, I think its better just to preach CAUTION at this stage in the season.

Maybe without the Chelsea double then yeah take the risk, but as far as my plans go and what transfers I have planned to switch out their players before GW3 I know I'd have a tough time upgrading to Aguero if I'd invested an extra 1.0 on a defender here, .5 more on my second goalkeeper there... etc. etc.

It could go very, very wrong and I don't see an awful lot of upside.

I'm not sold on any 6.5m midfielders personally so will be going for 3 big hitters. Much more appeal in the 9m+ bracket with the likes of bale, vdv, siggy, valencia, lampard, mata, carzola. That's where the serious points are and having tevez over aguero allows more freedom to invest in midfield.

Worst comes to worst it forces people to take a 4 point hit. Not a season ruining mistake. Worth the risk IMO. And do you really see any of the 6.5m mids outscoring Nani, Valencia, VDV? The 6.5m ones are certainly good value but won't outscore big hitting midfielders.

We see a lot of talk about Michu, Pienaar, N'Zogbia, McClean, Larsson, Taarabt. They won't be outscoring the likes of Nani/Valencia/VDV, no, but they each offer a lot of value in a balanced team, and none of them are such worthless prospects to necessitate taking a risky cheaper forward to absolutely upgrade asap, you know? With 3 big hitters in midfield you can find yourself neglecting these types of solid mid-price players who could potentially rise in value.

Haven't changed this since Sunday so I guess I'm getting close to my GW1 team:

    Friedel, Federici
    Terry, Zabaleta, Saylor, Cuellar, Gunter
    Lampard, VDV, Kagawa, Michu, HRK
    Torres, Tevez, Graham

1m in bank for no specific reason. I'm open to following Doosra's plan of taking a hit GW2 so can downgrade Terry to get Rooney if I decide to.

1 question, Lampard or Mata? I'm a bit concerned about Fatty's gametime and Mata isn't playing in the internationals.

I would probably go Green over Federici, but that is just my opinion. I don't see Torres doing to well after the first few games so I would plan on swapping him with someone else (like Rooney) at some point. VDV is one of my favorite players, but Sigurdsson or Bale could perform better. Also, I don't know enough about Kagawa to have faith in him, and if you end up bringing in Rooney then Kagawa could be surplus. Otherwise a great team!

    My current squad

    Federici (Rudd)

    Vermaelen Hangeland Cuellar (Onuoha) (Clyne)

    Cazoria Bale Mclean Michu (Guthrie)

    Rooney Bent Torres

I have took a gamble having only 1 playing goalie , but my defence is stronger now with cuellar in for barnett and i feel over the seaoso defence is likely to be more crucial in terms of points than my goalie.

I would swap a striker out for Graham (probably bent), then you have the coin to have two playing keepers and ideally one that is not on a freshly promoted team. This would also leave you with some extra cash to carry forward or upgrade elsewhere.

If you're set on villa cover you can easily swap Michu (now that you have Graham) for N'zogbia.

Why is that a bad way of doing things? Maybe not the 'best' players in your head, but you should certainly pick proven players at the start.

Choose what you know. I know Harte is good at free-kicks. I know Reading have a double game week and I know Stoke foul a lot near the edge of the opposition area. I also know that Stoke can't hit a donkey's arse with a banjo up front. So I've put him in.
