Now a stone lighter after shedding his golf course weight, Carlos Tevez has once again emerged as a key player for Manchester City and Fantasy managers alike. The Argentine, who spent much of last season in exile after a spat with manager Roberto Mancini, was the star of last Sunday’s Community Shield victory over Chelsea, scoring a superb effort and overshadowing his compatriot, Sergio Aguero. But can he continue that form and keep the more expensive Aguero out of our Fantasy lineups?

One of the biggest attractions is the price difference between the pair, particularly in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, where Aguero has been priced at 11.5m in compared to Tevez’s 9m price tag. However, the difference in the Sky game is less marked with Tevez priced at 9.4m compared to Aguero’s 9.9m.

Another attraction is the post Community Shield comments from Roberto Mancini about Tevez being “a very important player” for City. With the side’s penalty taking, maverick striker Mario Balotelli still lacking match fitness and Edin Dzeko still out of favour as a starting striker, starts seem assured for Tevez for Man City’s opening games at least. But with Balotelli likely to be used sparingly during August, Aguero is set to retain penalty taking duties, arguably adding further weight to his hefty price tag.

Mark says…
I’ve been hesitant to consider Tevez over Aguero, for the simple reason that it seems inevitable that Roberto Mancini will look to give Mario Balotelli pitch time. My other concern is Mancini’s formation. The 3-4-1-2 looks to be a winning formula right now but the City boss is already indicating that he’ll abandon it once the real business gets underway. Even if it remains, I’m not sure how he builds both David Silva and Samir Nasri into his lineup, whilst keeping two strikers. I’m pretty sure they’ll be times when he’ll push Silva or Toure forward and abandon the idea of a pairing up front. For me, Aguero looks the most secure, regardless of the tactical scenario.

In the short-term, however, I have to admit I’m enormously tempted by the slimline Tevez. His goal and performance on Sunday was a clear indication of form and confidence and it seems nailed on that he’ll line up against Southampton. There’s every chance he could again steal the thunder from Aguero in that game and that 2.5 FPL difference can be invested to some effect elsewhere in our lineups. Will I be 100% that Tevez will take the field in a few Gameweek’s time? That’s the issue. For me, Aguero is a fire and forget option, by going with Tevez, it’s a question of cashing in on the short-term benefits and managing your way out of the situation later. After Sunday’s showing and the noise from the City camp, I might just be willing to take that on.

Andy says…
When I look at comparing two figures like Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero there is one thing that is always at the forefront of my mind – the Fantasy captaincy. The armband is the biggest duty for Fantasy Managers on any given Gameweek and, if I think I’m going to be spreading it about the Etihad stadium with regularity, I’ll make sure to pick the player that I think is not only most consistent and most likely to start games. That man, for me, without a shadow of a doubt, is Sergio Aguero.

However, in the first couple of months of the new season I really don’t see too many of Roberto Mancini’s men pushing the issue when it comes to captaincy. Given that inference I have to hark to the other dominant factor: price. While I think Aguero is more assured of pitch time, it doesn’t even begin to make up for the extra 2.5 in your pocket by opting for Tevez. As a player I prefer Aguero – exponentially so – but for the first couple of months of the season I’ll be managing with my head and leaving my heart at the door. Tevez will be in my team.

Paul Says…
It’s impossible to say over the long-term but, right now, he certainly looks to be. Tevez’s attitude has been praised by both Roberto Mancini and David Platt and the City boss has already stated he expects him to be an important player in the season to come – a sure sign of how he plans to utilise him. Aguero’s phenomenal debut season was, in part, helped by a number of factors –Tevez’s determination to force a move away from the Etihad and subsequent strop in the Allianz Arena, Mario Balotelli’s indiscipline and Edin Dzeko’s loss of form all meant that last year’s summer signing was too crucial to be left out at any point. Now that Tevez is 100% both physically and mentally, Mancini may well feel he can afford to slightly restrict Aguero’s game time when Mario Balotelli is fully-fit.

Personally, I feel that Tevez and Aguero could be handed roughly the same number of starts, with one or the other dropping out for Balotelli on occasion, while Edin Dzeko is mostly reduced to the role of impact sub. Bearing in mind this was a player who was priced at 12.0 at the start of last season, I reckon Tevez looks exceptional value at the moment for 9.0 and that 2.5 saving over Aguero has certainly won me over for just now.

    question

doesn't it take a few days when a player is transferred [in the prem to another prem team] on fpl?

what would happen if you had rvp and he moved to man u say friday but he wasn;t transferred in time but played and scored assisted e.t.c you would'nt get the points would you?

He's still in the game so he'd get the points for you (but they'd probably sort it out asap). You'd also be allowed four players from one team (if you had three Utd players already) but your first transfer would have to be to get rid of one.

Transfers within FPL Teams have been almost instantaneous this year... Like Allen to Liverpool happened almost within the hour...

Also its in the rules that you cannot have more than 3 players from a team and if it happens due to a transfer you are supposed to transfer one player out. Maybe if happens during a GW, one player in your team might be replaced with a sub from your bench...

Pienaar has better starting fixtures than Taarabt and Yaya will play more minutes than Nasri (although he'll play deeper).

      I would go B.

Ok guys just did a few stats up on Nasri vs Yaya over their last few seasons using the FPL history. The only thing skewing results would be Yaya's 2 Premier League seasons compared to Nasri's 4.

    Yaya Touré (8.0):
Average game time per season - 2804 mins
Average points per game - 4.57
Average goals per season - 6
Average assists per season - 7.5
Average yellow cards per season - 5.5
Average bonus per season - 15 points

    Samir Nasri (8.5):
Average game time per season - 2227 mins
Average points per game - 4.67
Average goals per season - 5.75
Average assists per season - 4
Average yellow cards per season - 3
Average bonus per season - 14 points

Also average points per season (which IMO doesn'tmean a wholelot because it doesn't take gametime into account):

      Yaya - 142.5 points
      Nasri - 115.75 points

Seriously though, if you're looking for short term gains then Nasri is worth the risk, but if you want someone that won't need to be transferred out and will get some goals go for Yaya. Really, imo, it depends on how "safe" the rest of your players are.

So with the RVP > Utd looking ever closer, is anybody tempted to save the 2.0 and do Ramires > Valencia in GW2 instead?

With RVP at Utd, it surely places Rooney's point-scoring potential in doubt. Whereas Valencia looks sure to be the least rotated midfielder, and could score assists-galore if he's providing the ammunition for RVP/Rooney.

That was so cryptic from Mark, i love it 😀 Aguero still for me though, FTs are goldust and i can't afford to waste a couple on tevez in the future. The extra cash he provides isn't much use anyway, it will make a poor balance where the midfield/defence is too strong and you have t bench a pricey player often.

I'm on the other wavelength GB. I'll only have to bench a 5.5 most weeks. When he plays I can bench a cheap forward or a mid-priced mid depending on rotation and fixtures. See how it goesthough

The extra cash is of no use?!

      Crazy talk.

Divided up, it can upgrade most people's sh*tty 5.0 defender to a 6.0/6.5 top tier defender and a mid-level 7.0 MF to an 8.0/8.5. That creates two reliable points earners. So:

      Aguero + 2 schwag players - or
      Tevez + 2 legitimate starters.

Frankly, the "I can't use the 2.5" sounds a bit silly. Not pointed solely at you, Giggsy, but that's a common statement on here re: Tevez/Aggy.

        This is my opinion:

Points earned with the 2.5 million spare > The difference between Aguero and Tevez' points.

    CLYNE

PROS: good up and coming player
CONS: shocking early fixtures, prices more likely to fall, new to prem level, team fav for the drop

Can anyone explain the love? Cropping up in so many teams i'm starting to doubt the knowledge on here!

Could name 4 or 5 better at 4 million, guaranteed more transfers out than in first 5 weeks unless he scores; he doesnt score.

Well I don't own him..but his ownership is only 4.8%..makes it difficult for price to drop too rapidly

But you can play him & cant profit from him at a time when everyone is trying to boost value.

I reckon most people just did what I did and stuck him in initially because it's frankly boring to sort out FPL defences for pre season and he worked well with Cuellar and McCartney according to someone I don't even know. I won't have him anymore come Saturday I hope.

He has less than 5% ownership so he probably won't fall too drastically. Barnett is at 15%

Pros are he is also very attacking and has been one of our best players pre season. He gets forward well and the way we play both fullbacks got around double figures in assists last season. I know we will not be anywhere near as prolific this season but I see us finding it easier to score than not concede. Which leads to the minus points, I see very few clean sheets but for 4m I don't see any other teams around with 4m defenders nailed on who will definately concede less. West ham, reading, Norwich are the other options really and I see all those being very leaky too to be honest.

Yeah people have better things to do early in the seasonwith their transfers than swap out budget defenders. Should be OK

With the double causing missing fixtures early you need to run the bench, clyne is deadwood.

Rumours have it that even before an official unvealing or press conference manager TW has been hard at work, apparently having already set up a gw 1 friendly against dortmund and a gw 2 friendly against Werder Bremen. He may still be looking for one or two more friendlies during the span of gw 3-5.

Why are people picking Federici over Green? Surely QPR will be the stonger of the 2 this season with the signings they have made, reading look fairly poor on paper and i cant see them doing well
