It’s the first Monday Night Football installment of the season, and we’re at Goodison Park to see Everton host Manchester United. The build-up to this game has surrounded around the arrival of Robin van Persie at Manchester United, and how he would feature this evening. The Dugout Discussion is open and the eagerly anticipated team news is in…

Everton XI: Howard, Hibbert, Baines, Distin, Jagielka, Neville, Osman, Fellaini, Pienaar, Gibson, Jelavic.

Man United XI: De Gea, Valencia, Vidic, Carrick, Evra, Cleverley, Kagawa, Scholes, Nani, Welbeck, Rooney.

Sir Alex Ferguson chooses to start just one of his two major signings, and it’s the Japanese playmaker Shinji Kagawa that makes his United debut. It’s a makeshift defence with Antonio Valencia and Michael Carrick filling the gaps. Robin van Persie starts on the bench.

As for the hosts, David Moyes names a familiar looking side, leaving new signing Steven Naismith on the bench.

Follow all the action as it unfolds in our Dugout Discussion chatroom, which is open and can be accessed right here.

    Verdict from a Gooner...

In attacking performance I saw a few similarities between you and Arsenal:
    - 4-2-3-1, but wingers were letdowns.
    - Man in the hole was the only significant creator. Both (Cazorla and Kagawa) passed well but were let down by those around him
    - Passing was too slow
    - Crossing was awful
    - Not enough movement
    - Attacking players dropped back into midfield because they weren't getting service

The difference was that Sunderland parked the bus from the start, whereas Everton looked to dominate midfield, score, then park the bus.

Agreed, Everton were great, played really well and created plenty chances. They could easily have had 3 or 4 on the night. Still don't understand Fergie not signing another CB. I know he's got Evans and Rio but I think they are still 1 short there

Great performance by Everton they fully deserved that win. Thought Kagawa looked quite promising, tidy player with an eye for an incisive pass. Definitely one for the watchlist.

Now to more important matters......Man U are 9/4 to win the league. Pretty good for a 2 horse race. Would they have lost the league last season with Vidic and RVP.. I think not. I'm sticking a few quid on it.

i genuinely believe carrick + cleverley would've done no better at CM than scholes + cleverley did tonight. just throwing that out there. scholes is a better passer than carrick when pressed, although carrick is better positionally and would've intercepted a few more balls i suppose....

i would certainly say so, yeah. more mobile, and he's been honing that position in front of the back four for years, whereas scholes has only adopted it intermittently and mainly late in his career. there's a reason why carrick plays centre back sometimes and scholes never does.

I think, eventually, I may have to fire Kagawa for masquerading as a midfielder ... 🙁

They are playing Fulham, Southampton. Wigan and Liverpool in the next four keep him.
Although the Wigan game will probably be the toughest of those four...

Intruiging state of affairs - the top strikers look dubious value - Rooney, RvP, Aguero, Suarez, Torres (given fixtures and recent form)....spending big on midfielders seems the way to go this season

after 1 game?? last season the strikers killed it last season and can see no reason why they wont do so again.

Hate to do it, but think I have to do the same. Waste of transfer 🙁

Bit the bullet and used my transfer to get Tevez in for Aguero before the price rise.

Still considering removing Ramires as planned, but it's less appealing as a -4 hit now, and I'm still not sure which >=6.5 mid to replace him with. McClean maybe. Any suggestions?

    (I have Michu, thanks.)
