Marouanne Fellaini towers above the United defence to earn three points for Everton as Sir Alex Ferguson’s side are shackled, with Robin Van Persie reduced to a cameo role. Here’s the stock check following the Goodison clash…

On The Up

Marouanne Fellaini
Pushed up in support of Nikaca Jelavic, the big Belgian was imperious and led the line with strength and composure. It’s not clear if David Moyes will persist with Fellaini in the role, with Steven Naismith and new signing Kevin Mirallas, the Everton boss clearly has options. However, this promises to be a big season for Fellaini and at 6.5 in the FPL and 4.7 in the Sky Sports Game, Fantasy managers may well be rethinking Steven Pienaar as the protagonist in Everton’s midfield ranks.

The Everton Defence
Moyes’ rearguard was defiant throughout and magnificent to a man. Leighton Baines delivered his first clean sheet of the season – he remains the luxury item in the Toffees back four but, on this form, a strong haul of clean sheets over the season could be in the offing to help justify the outlay.

David De Gea
While United struggled in attacking terms, De Gea stood firm against a first half blue tide, pulling off notable saves to keep the score deadlocked at the interval. With Anders Lindegaard breathing down his neck, the Spaniard has to produce. Tonight he was arguably United’s most impressive performer – he had to be.

Going Down

Wayne Rooney
Rooney was the danger man for United but Sir Alex Ferguson’s attacking players were far from potent. While they dominated possession and passed the ball well, they lacked a cutting edge and a direct threat. Rooney’s owners will go into the weekend clash with Fulham concerned that Robin Van Persie will be called upon to provide that, while Rooney retreats deep.

United’s Widemen
Ferguson appeared to allow his attacking players fluidity with Shinji Kawaga and Rooney interchanging up front or drifting deep to pick up the ball. The uncertainty surrounding Kawaga’s role and the likelihood of a Rooney/Van Persie pairing will cause concern. It appears we could see Nani, Antonio Valencia, Ashley Young, Danny Welbeck and Kawaga competing for two starts in wide areas throughout the season.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Very much confused who to play from Hangeland (MUN), Clyne (WIG) and Demel (SWA) in GW2...

Can Rooney and RVP break down Hangeland and Fulham defense... Is it better to go with Clyne...

So Everton looks to have a decent/good start.

But would that make you pick Dyer (WHM) over N'Zogbia (EVE)?
Villa hasn't prove their fire power yet, while West Hame looked resilient and I already have both Michu and Vorm on the field.

    The crowd's pick?

I'd also say Dyer. Villa will not systematically break down Everton, so you'll need some luck, whereas I have more faith in Swansea knowing how to break down West Ham.

Man United are different beast at home and were up against a really hard working Everton team who played out of their skin.

Play Clyne, Hangeland 3rd choice sub.

I think he will be worth it. The only one assured of maximum points potential as he is the most advanced player and will be nailed on for ManU. Makes the 13m worth it IMO

I think I'm going to go without Manchester United attacking coverage against Fulham, here's why

For starters we can garnish very little from their performance against Everton precisely because of the obvious lack of penetration. Kagawa looked lively and Rooney influential but ultimately this added up to nothing. Chances were simply not created. As a result I find it hard to imagine United turning it around so much as to thrash a red hot Fulham side. I can imagine a bland 2-0 result next week.

Secondly its anyone's guess as to who the likely scorers or assister's will be. A 2-0 result and any one of Rooney, RVP, Kagawa, Welbeck, Young, Valencia etc could be involved. So who do we pick? its a guessing game.

Thirdly if you pick the wrong player, say Kagawa and it eventually looks like Valencia was the better one to have, you would have effectively wasted a transfer as you seek to get the form player in.

In summary I think it may be prudent to wait one more week and see how things play out. Who the likely starters will be, the formation and roles of each player and a general assessment of form. From this information we will get a better idea. Better to be one week late then 5 weeks too early

You could make the same argument that the points could go to any of 5 or 6 players for not bringing in a City attacker too.

The way I see it is, i'm going to have at least one United attacker in my team, probably permanently. Whether he gets 2 points or 10 on the weekend is down to chance, but I know his returns will add up in the weeks or months I have him.

True but what about City's midfield options?

Personally I think Rooney and RVP will get plenty of points between them. They're both nailed on long term, remains to be seen if RVP gets starts from now or in a few weeks.

Fair enough I wouldn't buy into United's midfield just yet, but only really Kagawa has changed from last season... there was always ambiguity over which of the 3 wingers would be getting starts so nothing has changed in that regard.
Perhaps RVP too in case he only gets limited game time initially. But I don't see any reason not to go for Rooney.

I worry about him dropping deep a lot and with RVP coming in and taking set pieces he could really steel his thunder or at least share it. The difference between last year and this year is that RVP and Kagawa are both great players and have the potential to share the points with Rooney whereas last year United relied so heavily on Wayne.

Yeah there's definitely concern about direct FKs but I imagine it'll just depend on whether the angle suits a left or right footer. I reckon penalties are Rooney's to lose, as in once/if he misses one or two RVP will be stepping up.

Personally I think we'll see them playing a 4-3-3. No way they'll be doing an outdated rigid 4-4-2 as many here have suggested, though it could be an improvised 4-4-2 like City have often used.

Anyway, both RVP and Rooney are players that sometimes like to play deep and collec so there may be some interchanget. At OT they'll both be pushed far forward for the most part and there's no reason why both of them can't grab bagfulls of points. Tevez and Aguero did it at the tail end of last season.

4-3-3? how would they line up. I was thinking a 4-4-1-1 with Rooney in behind

Lol well not exactly 4-3-3, more like Carrick in front of the defence, Scholes distibuting, both he and Kagawa being the link up man to the forwards. Similar to what City were doing last season when Balotelli might've been the more central forward while Aguero and Nasri/Silva were on either flank. Aguero was still banging them in and always in the right position.

Scholes is ancient and won't play THAT much. Same thing with Giggs. So you'd imagine Kagawa is seen as a potential long term replacement for him. Once the CL starts up again I doubt Kagawa will be a viable fpl option because it'll be a lottery as to who plays when.

Another thing with RVP, Wenger played him constantly last season, possibly too much as he seemed slightly jaded by the end. Frustratingly for us, SAF will be giving him more rests, using Wellbeck and Hernandez occasionally. Rooney too but less likely.

see my post above, I've gone early 🙂

My view to counter your very well thought out approach is UTD are at home and have to win, Fulham played well but with all due respect to Norwich, it was, well at home to Norwich.

Which ever way I look at it I can only see RVP playing further forward than Rooney (I think this is just the natural way they like to play, which incidently is why I think they will ultimately score alot of points together). Also untill Utd defenders get off the treatment table then Utds midfield is less crowded than usual as Valencia and Carick are in defense right now....

      I've been wrong before though......

I think RVP is probably the best investment out of the lot so I have no problem with that choice. I simply can't afford him yet with what I want to do. Rooney, Kagawa and Valencia on the other hand are all options for me that I find too risky at this stage until I know who will become the best option saving myself trouble later on.

I agree ryan.....however with the exception of MF, if Welbeck had any balance or touch at all, they would have scored today. Kagawa tried to set him up on a few occaisions and he blew it. I reckon had RVP started and was game fit the score would have been much different! For 8.5 imo Kagawa will be a steal. For me, GW 3 is the week. Lampard>Kagawa!

Right regarding the price change algorithm...

Last night Michu went up on around 48k transfers. Tonight Tevez went up on around 42k transfers. However, Dyer did NOT go up on around 30k transfers. Hence the rise threshold is between 30k and 42k transfers. For comparison, it started off in the mid 30ks last season I think, so I wouldn't be surprised if it were around that. There are loads of players getting transfers in who will be around that tomorrow night - so we should get a much idea of what the threshold is then.

TotalFPL's rise threshold was too low (under 20k) so they jumped the gun and incorrectly predicted rises for Dyer and Petric. FISO's is way too high (170k) so they haven't predicted a single rise so far. Both will adjust these soon.

Basically, if your player has more than 30k transfers in by midnight, be prepared for a rise...

    Night night!

Nice, this is actually seriously useful to know. I was dabbling with idea it was 1%, but that can't be the case this year since the threshold is clearly a long way above 20k (1/100 of 2 million). But yes that's clearly how TOTALFPL set it, good spot!

Hey I was at work during the MU - Everton game.. How did Kagawa look? I heard he was in the midfield, but was he in advanced positions? Thoughts?

Because to fall below starting value the player needs 10% of his total ownership to sell him which is about 60,000. But since he's flagged the fall threshold becomes considerably more than that.

We fall so that we can rise. Kagawa was inspirational. Only the lack of a CB led to that goal.

Fair play to Everton though. They were massive.

it may take a week or two but Arsenal will score goals this season....

Anyone else in the Player Exchange? Less then 28,000 in it and a far as I can see no disadvantage, possibly even an advantage, to join today still in GW1. Can invest in players who gain points by the usual FF rules but also by price rises. Monthly prize is an i-Pad no less 🙂

Having the transfer window closing two weeks into the season is a lot of fun from a fantasy perspective, but it wrecks a lot of havoc, especially on the smaller teams. Look at Fulham, it is to both Dempsey's and Fulham's benefit for him to not play, until it is all sorted out, financially. From competitive standpoint it can handicap the team (although in this case it appears not to be so). A June to July transfer window would make more sense.

not to compare but....in north american sports, the transfer/trade window continues untill about 3/4 of the way through the season. I can not understand why in Football the transfer window is so early. Further, I fail to understand why in a situation like in FUL why does not the player play until the the transfer is complete! He is under contract after all.

Nice team. You do not need to WC. In the long run I would focus on downgrading maybe A.Cole -> 4Mil defender and upgrade one of Guthrie or Britton. I would keep an eye on Mata too, He's due to some rest byRDM.

In fact, how did any potential targets play? Baines, Pienaar, Jelavic, Kagawa, Rooney in particular!

Roon looked a bit fat to me and still not that sharp.
I thought Kagawa played amazing. Around 5 key passes from him.
BAines pushed a lot forward, defended well and almost scored and DDG had a great save on his free kick(should have been a goal).
Jelavic can get a few goals this season with all the support he has.
Pienaar was ok. If Fellaini holds the more advanced position in midfield like today he can be a better bet IMO.

He sacrificed himself a lot. Put a lot of effort helping out the midfield with his physical presence. He was not the most dangerous though. He's def. a great player and the supply doesn't seem to lack from Everton's midfield and Baines. Ended up playing with a numberless shirt too...lol

Kagawa best United player on the pitch. He was sensational. United didnt play too bad, just did not have the cutting edge.

Everton dominated physically. Baines Pienaar Jelavic all had good games, but none better than Felliani.

Rooney looked a little out of sorts but signs of him and Kagawa combining well were there. Kagawa played really high up the pitch. He played in the hole and Welbeck on the wings.

He played really well and looked threatening pairing up wit Fellaini... Once the goal came, he got involved in a more defensive role(actually the whole team did!).....
