Marouanne Fellaini towers above the United defence to earn three points for Everton as Sir Alex Ferguson’s side are shackled, with Robin Van Persie reduced to a cameo role. Here’s the stock check following the Goodison clash…

On The Up

Marouanne Fellaini
Pushed up in support of Nikaca Jelavic, the big Belgian was imperious and led the line with strength and composure. It’s not clear if David Moyes will persist with Fellaini in the role, with Steven Naismith and new signing Kevin Mirallas, the Everton boss clearly has options. However, this promises to be a big season for Fellaini and at 6.5 in the FPL and 4.7 in the Sky Sports Game, Fantasy managers may well be rethinking Steven Pienaar as the protagonist in Everton’s midfield ranks.

The Everton Defence
Moyes’ rearguard was defiant throughout and magnificent to a man. Leighton Baines delivered his first clean sheet of the season – he remains the luxury item in the Toffees back four but, on this form, a strong haul of clean sheets over the season could be in the offing to help justify the outlay.

David De Gea
While United struggled in attacking terms, De Gea stood firm against a first half blue tide, pulling off notable saves to keep the score deadlocked at the interval. With Anders Lindegaard breathing down his neck, the Spaniard has to produce. Tonight he was arguably United’s most impressive performer – he had to be.

Going Down

Wayne Rooney
Rooney was the danger man for United but Sir Alex Ferguson’s attacking players were far from potent. While they dominated possession and passed the ball well, they lacked a cutting edge and a direct threat. Rooney’s owners will go into the weekend clash with Fulham concerned that Robin Van Persie will be called upon to provide that, while Rooney retreats deep.

United’s Widemen
Ferguson appeared to allow his attacking players fluidity with Shinji Kawaga and Rooney interchanging up front or drifting deep to pick up the ball. The uncertainty surrounding Kawaga’s role and the likelihood of a Rooney/Van Persie pairing will cause concern. It appears we could see Nani, Antonio Valencia, Ashley Young, Danny Welbeck and Kawaga competing for two starts in wide areas throughout the season.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    ahh do choices choices

    A) Aguero > RVP (leaves me with too many chelski players leading into GW3)

    B) Aguero > Tevez (Leaves me with no UTD coverage going into there spanking of Fulham)

    C) Torres > RVP (leaves me with imo an 11.5m player this isnt going to play GW2 and maybe 3)

Definite dilemma re getting Rooney in at home. He is undoubtedly more attacking home than away (check the members area for concrete proof) though RVP may affect his returns. United CAN simply play 4-4-2 at home like they often did last year right?

That's an awful team. United sides have always been about strength in midfield and winning the ball back early. Rooney will start left mid, imo. Scholes/Carrick/Anderson alongside Cleverley.

I cannot remember the last time Rooney started left mid in a 442. Kagawa and Cleverley played together in central midfield in the last pre-season game against Hannover.

That was a friendly, and not competitive enough a shape for the PL. Rooney started plenty of games out wide left when Ronaldo was at Old Trafford. In any case, it's not a 442, more a 4-2-3-1, and United's strongest formation, imo.

Top of all my mini leagues so far. The three guys behind me all have Tevez.

    I did:

    Aguero -> Tevez
    Torres -> Rooney

    Couple of reasons for this.
    1. Looks like Tevez's price will go up tonight
2 Looks like Aguero's will go down.
    3. The three guys behind me all have Tevez and with the prospect of QPR (H) in GW3 it kills the differential a bit
    4. Torres doesn't play in GW3. Rooney has Fulham, Southampton & Wigan coming up. He is 1.0 cheaper than RVP. He's on most free kicks and should retain the spot kick duties.
    5. Worried about Spurs signing another ST and Defoe's game time getting limited because of it, and I already have some Spurs coverage (Bale).

Seems logical? Well, at least, I hope it turns out ok. I usually get off to horrendous starts, so to be around 13,000 at this stage is much better than normal.

Had time to calm down from the euphoria and think about fantasy football now. Going to go with Torres -> RVP, unless Torres really impresses in midweek. It's easier to get RVP now and downgrade if necessary. I'm definitely not taking a hit this early in the season.

if lots of people transfer out Aguero his price will drop which means he could go from £11.5M > £11.1M for example. You will have lost £0.4M to spend on other transfers.

        Morning Billy,

Yeah, you're probably right. Was all set to make the hit for a viable MUN (c) option, but it might make more sense to hold tight at least one more week.

Harsh luck on Aguero - I guess you're waiting on injury news before making your move?

I would have thought so, simply because he's the one of the few (only?) box to box midfielders Chelsea have. Having said that, with him missing GW3 and 22k+ transfers out I'm not prepared to lose 0.1m on him, so freed up some funds by bringing in Kacanklic to bench this week.

Anyone thinking Rooney/RVP not really essential, had planned to do Torres to Rooney but he was fairly rubbish tonight and although their next 3 aren't awful I'm looking at Fulham Southampton Wigan this week and they aren't walkovers either. After that it gets really tough with Liverpool Spurs Newcastle Chelsea and Arsenal in the next 6. Might just have to rethink this 🙁

Rooney could easily start out left at home, with Kagawa given the trequartista role behind RVP. Rooney can still do damage from their of course, but maybe is not so essential. Am happy with Kagawa as my only Man U attacking coverage at the moment.

Rooney could even be dropped for some games tbh. I think he's a slight rotation risk now, lets be fair alot of his performances deserve it. With the RVP signing, Fergie can afford to do it. We'd look just as strong with Kagawa behind RVP instead of someone being wasted out wide or on the bench.

I agree with this. Easily the classiest on the ball out of all the United players and can pick out the killer pass. I'm not saying he was amazing tonight but he showed enough signs that with more time playing in the team, he looks the most likely to pull Man U's strings going forward. He'll be rested occasioionally when CL and cup games come around but I think he'll play most games.

I'm not so sure... I think it was telling that SAF played Welback wide left rather than Kagawa. He's clearly seen something special in training and the pre-season, maybe good link up play with Rooney?

Think about it. He started Kagawa away at Everton; one of the toughest fixtures in the season. If he plays with the same attitude and ability, he's sure to start more games than not.
