Marouane Fellaini torments United from start to finish and hands Everton the three points after heading home from a corner. The Toffees continue the strong home form displayed at the end of last season, while United’s two new boys produce contrasting performances as Sir Alex Ferguson’s side get off to a losing start:

Marouane Fellaini
Tucking in behind Nikica Jelavic in David Moyes’ trusted 4-5-1 formation, the Belgian’s aerial ability proved the undoing of United time and again. With Everton targeting the visitors full-backs with long, diagonal balls, Fellaini continually put Sir Alex Ferguson’s side under pressure and grabbed the only goal of the game as Everton pulled off the first shock of the season. As to whether he will continue to play as far more is perhaps debatable – Kevin Mirallas wasn’t registered in time for the game and is also versatile enough to play fill the position but at 6.5 in FPL and 6.1 in the Sky Sports game, Fellaini is sure to see plenty investment before the weekend’s trip to Villa.

Everton Defence
Perhaps last night’s result wasn’t quite as shocking as the media suggest. Everton closed out last season with six clean sheets in their last eight at Goodison and their defensive resilience was at the fore once again last night with an intelligent, well-drilled display ensuring they kicked off the season with a victory. Tony Hibbert and Sylvain Distin come in at 5.5 in FPL and if the Toffees maintain their superb form at the back in front of their supporters, the duo look decent value. With only two home matches in the next seven Gameweeks, though, many will overlook Moyes’ defenders, bearing in mind that Swansea and Spurs play at home five times over the same period.

David De Gea
The Spaniard produced a strong performance between the sticks to surely cement his place as United’s number one. Priced at 6.0 in FPL, De Gea certainly looks firmly in the driving seat ahead of Anders Lindegaard, with his 14.2% ownership on the rise on the back of last night’s heroics.

Shinji Kagawa
Handed the role in “the hole” behind Wayne Rooney with Danny Welbeck and Nani on the flanks, the summer signing looked a class apart but – in a similar story to that of Santi Cazorla on Saturday – failed to produce the points on his debut. What was noticeable is that Kagawa was handed 90 minutes – perhaps a sign of his manager’s faith, with Welbeck, Nani and Tom Cleverley the men to make way when Ferguson sent on the subs. At 8.5, he’s the lowest priced of United attacking midfielders and, with Antonio Valencia featuring at right-back last night, Kagawa looks a promising Fantasy prospect with (FUL, sot, WIG) to follow despite last night’s frustrating blank.

Robin Van Persie
Handed a substitute role midway through the second-half after Ferguson chose to field Wayne Rooney as a lone striker, the Dutchman had an anonymous debut. The Fantasy conundrum between the pair was, if anything, exacerbated by last night’s viewing – United maintained the 4-2-3-1 formation upon Van Persie’s arrival, with the two forwards both taking it in turns to drop deeper and drift out wide as the visitors chased the game. Intriguingly, Van Persie was immediately handed corners from the right hand side – Nani retained the left side, though Rooney took over after the Portuguese man was withdrawn. With the above-mentioned three games to follow, many will still be ready to gamble ahead of the weekend – let’s hope Ferguson’s Friday morning press conference is a little more revealing than usual. Post-match, the United boss was a little critical of his other players, suggesting he expects better service for the Dutchman in order for United to prosper:

We were a wee bit disappointing in terms of finishing off the approach play we had. We played around him (Van Persie) too much, we didn’t show enough penetration. With Robin in your team you know you want to use his ability against centre-backs in situations he is very good at – but we didn’t use him enough.

    Weighing up so many different possible transfers. In order of likeliness:

    Lampard -> Cazorla
    Lampard -> Kagawa
    Lampard -> Nasri
    Podolski -> Graham
    Torres -> RVP
    Torres -> Rooney
    Podolski -> Ba

    Nightmare.

        Forgot to mention that's the other possibility.

        Just when I look at Cazorla's stats I get dreamy. Same for Graham's next fixture (though I already have Michu, which is why I didn't go for Graham from the start).

      Yeah, my main priority is just getting shot of my Chelsea DGWers before GW3. I could maybe be talked in to holding Lampard through GW3 depending how he does in the next two games but right now I'm thinking I'd rather have Hazard, so the GW3 deadline seemed like the best opportunity to make that (delayed) switch.

      Hmmm.

        Lampard is always a good shout for a goal or assist. I think he is worth keeping and allows you time to make a clearer decision prior to GW3. 2FT's will also help.

          So you think Baines will pick up around 40 attacking/bonus points more than Hibbert? Could happen, but I'd rather spend the extra money on attacking players where it will make more of a difference.

      No, Podolski up front, Gervinho left, Walcott right.

      Arsharvin came on for Walcott, Giroud on for Podolski, and then it was Gervinho on the right and Arsharvin on the left with Giroud in the middle.

      Podolski looked out of place up front. Wenger really should be looking to bring in another striker.

        Weird, because the average positions show Podolski more withdrawn than even Cazorla. Backs up your comment about him looking out of place i guess.

        Perhaps he'll opt for Giroud up top and move Podolski out to the left to replace Gervinho for the weekend.

    which transfer/s would you recomend - what weaknesses do you see?

        thanks for the feedback.
        arteta is actually perfect for this game - the 60 passes bonus and the 4 tackles bonus suit well for his style of play (in principal, he is only second to yaya in this department). gerard is a punt i agree - might swap to michu and add tevez up front.

          Agree on arteta point but you have Cazorla-he jus got 9 and looks a mag for 60 and motm, you could easily get Tiote or Parker when fit and use cash elsewhere.

      I think Daws will go you know. He's not going to be happy at 4th choice (if that's what he is) and we don't want to risk losing Caulker. Keep Gallas as experience (it looks like AVB likes him as well) and perhaps sign an up and coming CB or 2 that can play Europa and hopefully become good as well.

      Shame about Thudd though.

        Pushing Daws out the door makes no sense when we've four comps to play in and Kaboul is pretty much only first team cover for Walker at RB (Adam Smith might get some games though) and Verty is BAE's key LB cover. 5 CB's makes perfect sense in that regard.

        It looks like Thudd's limited mobility is coming back to haunt him.

    either Al Habsi/Federici

    Terry, Kompany, Figueroa

    Mata, Dyer, Yaya Toure, Bale

    Torres, Tevez, Petric

        Hi ENR

        Yeah, RB looked a good shout with Norwich's pre-season defensive efforts. I'm giving him (and Norwich) a second chance this week, not least because they're at home to a side who also leaked 5 goals in GW1.

          They're all good picks based on what we know at the moment, everyone will have their favourites or hunches but any of them could be great. I'm feeling pretty happy about having Nasri to be honest, that might be the one I'd recommend.

    With 2.5 in the bank I'm mulling over:

    a) Terry > Ivan, Torres > RVP (c) - 4pt hit

    b) Torres > Rooney (c)

    c) Ramires > Kagawa, captain Siggy

    Then GW2:

    a) Ramires to some 7.0 or less player

    b) Ramires > Ben Arfa

    c) Torres to Ba or Cisse

      I've heard the S'Hamption plan is keep him sub for away games and unleash at home.

      One goal does not a season make however.

      Better option with Graham at the moment I reckon, and let Lambert prove over a few more games that he is a real option once the fixtures perk up.
