Marouane Fellaini torments United from start to finish and hands Everton the three points after heading home from a corner. The Toffees continue the strong home form displayed at the end of last season, while United’s two new boys produce contrasting performances as Sir Alex Ferguson’s side get off to a losing start:

Marouane Fellaini
Tucking in behind Nikica Jelavic in David Moyes’ trusted 4-5-1 formation, the Belgian’s aerial ability proved the undoing of United time and again. With Everton targeting the visitors full-backs with long, diagonal balls, Fellaini continually put Sir Alex Ferguson’s side under pressure and grabbed the only goal of the game as Everton pulled off the first shock of the season. As to whether he will continue to play as far more is perhaps debatable – Kevin Mirallas wasn’t registered in time for the game and is also versatile enough to play fill the position but at 6.5 in FPL and 6.1 in the Sky Sports game, Fellaini is sure to see plenty investment before the weekend’s trip to Villa.

Everton Defence
Perhaps last night’s result wasn’t quite as shocking as the media suggest. Everton closed out last season with six clean sheets in their last eight at Goodison and their defensive resilience was at the fore once again last night with an intelligent, well-drilled display ensuring they kicked off the season with a victory. Tony Hibbert and Sylvain Distin come in at 5.5 in FPL and if the Toffees maintain their superb form at the back in front of their supporters, the duo look decent value. With only two home matches in the next seven Gameweeks, though, many will overlook Moyes’ defenders, bearing in mind that Swansea and Spurs play at home five times over the same period.

David De Gea
The Spaniard produced a strong performance between the sticks to surely cement his place as United’s number one. Priced at 6.0 in FPL, De Gea certainly looks firmly in the driving seat ahead of Anders Lindegaard, with his 14.2% ownership on the rise on the back of last night’s heroics.

Shinji Kagawa
Handed the role in “the hole” behind Wayne Rooney with Danny Welbeck and Nani on the flanks, the summer signing looked a class apart but – in a similar story to that of Santi Cazorla on Saturday – failed to produce the points on his debut. What was noticeable is that Kagawa was handed 90 minutes – perhaps a sign of his manager’s faith, with Welbeck, Nani and Tom Cleverley the men to make way when Ferguson sent on the subs. At 8.5, he’s the lowest priced of United attacking midfielders and, with Antonio Valencia featuring at right-back last night, Kagawa looks a promising Fantasy prospect with (FUL, sot, WIG) to follow despite last night’s frustrating blank.

Robin Van Persie
Handed a substitute role midway through the second-half after Ferguson chose to field Wayne Rooney as a lone striker, the Dutchman had an anonymous debut. The Fantasy conundrum between the pair was, if anything, exacerbated by last night’s viewing – United maintained the 4-2-3-1 formation upon Van Persie’s arrival, with the two forwards both taking it in turns to drop deeper and drift out wide as the visitors chased the game. Intriguingly, Van Persie was immediately handed corners from the right hand side – Nani retained the left side, though Rooney took over after the Portuguese man was withdrawn. With the above-mentioned three games to follow, many will still be ready to gamble ahead of the weekend – let’s hope Ferguson’s Friday morning press conference is a little more revealing than usual. Post-match, the United boss was a little critical of his other players, suggesting he expects better service for the Dutchman in order for United to prosper:

We were a wee bit disappointing in terms of finishing off the approach play we had. We played around him (Van Persie) too much, we didn’t show enough penetration. With Robin in your team you know you want to use his ability against centre-backs in situations he is very good at – but we didn’t use him enough.

The daily Star a reporting a month out minimum, but there is a possibility it could be longer. The article says he will definately miss next three games and once the swelling gas gone down, a full diagnosis can be made.

Isacki - Re: AVB in defence - honestly haven't got the foggiest. Been away all weekend so other than us conceding 2 goals I have no idea - was it a shambles?
Vertonghen had played 90 mins in the internationals I think? Maybe he was just resting him for that?

Yeah fair point surely Vertonghen was rested. Wouldn't say it was a shambles but at the important moments the defence didn't seem to be in the right place. Guess that's not really saying much though. You definitely played with less of a high defensive line than he did at Chelsea. Lots of attempts to pass the ball through and created a few decent chances including a Bale header off the line and Defoe hitting the post. There were many times though when the defence seemed isolated from the midfield and were stuck passing the ball horizontally and back to the keeper. Ironically that looks like a result of a deeper defensive line.

He will definitely score more than Modric did. Kagawa burst into the box a couple of times last night, whcih Modric never really seemed to do with any real conviction or regularity.

Kagawa nearly socred from RVP cut back, and also nearly assisted Cleverley when it was cleared off the line.

My main worry on Kagawa is game time (he will get lots, but not ALL), and position - I see SAF shirting him out wide at times, and maybe also in a midfield 2 as part of a 4-4-2. He won't play "in the hole" as often as he woud need to to be an absolute must have IMO.

Kagawa looks to me like a supremely unselfish player who works for the benefit of the team - sadly I think this may be to the detriment of his FPL prospects. May get a few shooting opportunities when the time is right but see Rooney, RVP and the wingers dominating them. He will always pass if he thinks it is the better option, he's like the anti-Sturridge.

Didn't see the Arsenal game but really liked what I saw of Kagawa last night. The rest of the team need to get up to speed especially Rooney!

I think when they have the wingers playing properly and the defense sorted Kagawa will be a 'must have'

Sadly if RVP and Rooney both start Kagawa's stats could be rather underwhelming. It looks unlikely to me that he will have a well-defined role in the hole as was definitely the case for Cazorla.

The main difference between the two for me is that Cazorla hits longer balls, especially in the air, and Kagawa does more defensive work.

Cazola had 8 crosses and 4 goal attempts to Kagawa's 2 crosses and 0 goal attempts. In terms of passes in the final third they are equal, but what could become clear is that Kagawa passes to another who then assists, while Cazola gets in crossing and shooting positions with his possession.

As I said hard to judge over one game, but if that theme continues over the next two gameweeks then my decision is made

This sums it up - both are definitely in the wait and see category.

Cazorla - can Arsenal start to finish chances (and fixtures can wait to perk up too)

Kagawa - can he start regularly in the hole and convert his play into points, or even regularly full stop (I suspect he will start more often than not - but perhaps not always in the hole)

I also think Carzola will have more of a hand in the team's goals - that Manu midfield now exists to feed the bird and the pig.

Kagawa will also score important goals in cups, as a late runner?

I expect position maps after 10 games to show santi a few yards closer to goal.

              Roll on gw8!

cheers for that really interesting. Would indicate that if Kagawa plays in that role and has a fit rooney or RVP to aim at then his assist rate could be very high. Rooney let him down last night.

As everyone has said wait and see on both Kagawa and Cazorla... but what is clear is that both could have huge potential.

Are those considering getting United attackers worried about their fixtures from GW5-10?

I’d back them for their home games regardless of opposition, especially players like Rooney and perhaps RVP, but would you back players like Kagawa for example? And what about those tough away games?

In theory that's when the high class whores should start to perfrom. They are hard games, but all winnable with the brace here and a penalty there, if lady luck smiles.

Not like Man city away, or even Arsenal at home who can be unpredictable opponents.

I wouldn't trust the midfield for those games.

      Must have....
Last year I'm sure Falini would have the 3 points for the only goal.
Whereas Baines didn't even get an assist and walked away with 3.

I suspect passing and creativity count more and goals and assists and shots slightly less.

Its probably as forwards totally dominated bonus points last year.

Wait until the Chelsea Reading game, see how Torres fairs, then make an informed decision. Rooney would have to score + assist and combinations there of, in order to make it worthwhile for a hit. Also Torres could still do well at home to the toon.

Hi Lebron - how did you get on? Rooney has to score one goal MORE than Torres just to break even on that hit. Possible of course but unlikely, even before his lazy performance last night.

Other factors to consider of course, like GW3 but on the whole I'd say no.

Good stuff. 64 for me when Michu gets up off the bench. Utd at home to Fulham is a nice prospect but IMO so is Torres at home to Newc, who don't travel well usually and I think have a Europa game on Thursday (though I might be wrong about that). I'd maybe swap for a free but not for a hit.

So about this GW3 business with no Chelsea game. I currently have Ivanovic, Hazard and Torres. I think I may use next weeks transfer to replace Torres, and keep Hazard and Ivanovic.

      I'm saving the transfer with

      DDG Fed

      Ivan Demel Lescott Cuellar Clyne

      Yaya Ramires Cazorla Kagawa Guthrie

      Torres Tevez Graham

      +2.0

Just to see how swansea, chelski and united do next week to get some clarity who to get in.

So annoying that Michu has already gone up in price. Now I will always have .4 in the bank if I get him in

      thanks

"Kagawa was active across the pitch, with 91% pass completion (68 out of 75), and made 20 passes to Wayne Rooney – the joint-highest passing combination in the match. Unfortunately for Manchester United, this was often after Rooney had dropped into a deeper role rather than turning the defence, but it was a promising start for the Japanese signing. Robin van Persie is more of a known quantity to English supporters, but had precious little to show for his 22 minutes on the pitch – just 4 completed passes and no shots."

      Interesting

No wonder Torres was anonymous. So much for creative supply

Michu set for a double rise 😀

Also, i think all of you should get Petric. Now. :p

Don't see anything in Petric to make me jump on the bandwagon. One was a free header and the other was a deflected strike

My reason to suggest Petric are not what you think.

Stop watching games other than stats. You are confusing things with your stats.

I really wish Swansea's fixtures weren't as good. Reminds me of Dzeko after he scored 5 goals last season. Didn't even start the next game 😛

The Utd Question is a real conundrum. I think I may do Aguero to Graham, which gives me a 6m kitty to switch my Chelsea for Utd in GW3. I'd rather be a week late than pick one and get it wrong.

makes sense but it seems likely rooney sits in a slightly deeper role if rvp plays

    Some options for FT

    a) Mata -> Michu 1) Today 2) Friday
    b) Torres -> 10.5m of cheaper striker

Most of the rest of my squad are fit so no immediate injury concerns,

Manini, you may want to check ou the "ZM elsewhere" tab - not as good but it's his other freelance work.

Agree on the quality. He started the whole formation map doohickie, pretty much, and was important in showing up the really lazy standards elsewhere, particularly vs broadcast pundits ("Not heard of him before...") etc

          😛
