The flag stayed down to allow Fernando Torres to deliver on a night that saw Hazard sparkle again. Brave Reading went home with nothing but put up a fight as their budget options confirmed their potential. Let’s check the stock…

On the Up

Eden Hazard
Five assists marks a remarkable start to Hazard’s Fantasy season and already confirms him as a major Fantasy asset. He’s mesmerising skill and pace, combined with the freedom to join the attack from all areas, has thrust Hazard to the top of our midfield shopping list – once the Gameweek 3 blank has passed of course.

Frank Lampard
Lampard may well rely on spot-kicks for returns but with Hazard in the side, he looks set to get plenty of them. The Belgian’s tricky feet are drawing fouls, seemingly handing Chelsea deadballs and penalties aplenty.

Fernando Torres
Torres left it late but he eventually delivered on the captaincy with a goal that just about justified the faith shown in him. We will still look to Hazard and wonder what might have been, while Robin Van Persie still looks ridiculously tempting for those with the funds to wave goodbye to El Nino for the weekend. It’s still a big decision for those with cracks elsewhere and with bandwagons rolling.

Pavel Pogrebnyak
The Russian delivered on his budget promise with a superb glancing header to bring Reading on terms. Pogrebnyak looks destined to lead the line home and away for the Royals and, as we’ve stressed all through the pre-season, offers a superb third striker option for those looking to reserve funds.

Danny Guthrie
Talking of budget options, Reading look to have a mix of them. The widemen Jobi McAnuff and Gareth McClearly put in strong displays again but it will be Guthrie, playing up in support of the lone striker and at just 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League game, that will rouse interest.

Going Down

Petr Cech
A calamitous error for Reading’s second goal drew visible frustration from manager Roberto Di Matteo and will give cause concern for those holding Chelsea defenders. We’ve seen his confidence waver in previous seasons. Worrying.

Juan Mata
While Hazard, Lampard and Torres delivered returns, Mata was the odd one out, offering two blanks over the double Gameweek. We know that Di Matteo is planning a rest for the playmaker, while it’s doubtful that this will start early against Newcastle, it’s not out of the question given the jaded performances so far.

Adam Le Fondre
Brian McDermot started tonight’s game in a 4-5-1, pushing Guthrie up to support Pogrebnyak. Le Fondre dropped to the bench then and will presumably be at risk when Reading are on the road.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

What's the general conscience on the issue of the dreaded Wildcard?

my conscience is telling me to keep it until a jackpot DGW in the winter/spring. I burned it within the first 4 gameweeks each of the past 3 years, and it really wasn't worth it. I still tinkered like mad the next 2-3 weeks, because roles are still taking shape this early (and "promising" bandwagons are still crashing)

Save for later. When you *need* to make 6 or more changes to your team, that's the time to use it.

Need is different from want too. Need could be a player you want is hitting hot form and will soon rise in price beyond your means of getting him, or the player has a chronic injury.

I scored high, but not as high as I had originally wanted. Counted it up, and I would have been sitting at 136, not 84.

I wildcarded. Got the players I originally took out and couldn't be happier.

I think saving it for a DGW is overrated. If i had chosen different DGW players, I would have got as many points as ENR, without any hits. You can generally get enough DGW players in, if you plan in advance.

Last season i WC in GW11 (I think) when there was a massive swing in fixtures for a few teams (including Man Utd), that coincided with my rise up the table. It is difficult to calculate how many points that WC was worth, but I still think that setting up your team for an extended period of fixtures, is better than setting it up for a DGW, with only a couple of fixtures remaining.

I haven't found such a massive swing in fixtures this season, so am stumped as to when to WC.

Mrs China Mag will WC in GW4. Her team was set up for the first 3 games. Being able to see how the cheap defences set up and perform, the transfer window closing, and chance to gain value are all big draws for an early WC.

A DGW over the winter break is a different matter, because you can bring DGW players in over a number of weeks, and then WC to set up your team for the rest of the season, but you get the january WC for that anyway

Last year's DGW's were late on, and the good teams had blanks to follow, so you're right that a DGW in and of itself is not the reason to wildcard. 2 or 3 seasons ago, though, there was one in january that was absolutely mouthwatering, without killing people's longer-term planning. So many scores in the 110+ range that if you missed it, you may as well have started GW2. I'll wait for something similar to that

Yeah. Apologised to you yesterday for that, but I think you had already logged off!! Oh well, as I said, if you can't take a punt on your 5th mid, when can you?? Though if I didn't have marveaux, I would have gone for guthrie!!

I was very worried about our match up when I saw the score this morning. I was sure that he had ivanovic, which would have made it VERY tight!

Talking of Ivanovic, I wish the fpl site had stayed broken on saturday. I realized with a couple of hours to go before the deadline, that the 0.5m i was saving to upgrade Ivanovic to baines could be used for Terry. But the site was down so I couldn't make the transfer. But I kept trying, and trying, and eventually I made the switch! Grrrrrr. Do you think they will give me a free WC?

        did he have ivanovic?

    Hey guys,

Are there any Liverpool FC members on this forum?

I'm coming over from Australia to see Liverpool vs. Fulham on 22 December 2012 & I'm trying to secure 2 x tickets.

Would happily throw in a bit of cash for a member willing to help out.

    Cheers,

Quick opinion please. A hit for side way move Mata -> Hazard to save and rise my team value early.. Yes or No.

Just 3 DGW. Michu & Bale already in.. No problem to field Gw3, I think.

I just did Lampard to Hazard for a hit, which makes less sense that Mata, so I'd say do it. I've done it mostly for team value - figure he'll rise 0.2 easy this week. Mata will likely fall, so if you're OK for GW3, it's a no brainer. Do it now though - prices changing soon.

Technically speaking, FPL transfer is a buy-and-sell type of market and there is always noise. When there's noise, there's overreaction and underreaction of things and I believe overreaction, at this point, is leading the way so you can safely expect a group of kneejerkers and bandwagoners. When the price falls, that's when contrarian investors get themselves back into the game and profit thus.

what is the alternative to a "buy and sell" type of market? Aren't most markets "buy and sell." I can only think of a barter system as an alternative. I'd like to understand your point more...

Sorry, I wasn't trying to be sarcastic or take a snipe at you. It seemed like you had insight to the way price changes work, but I didn't understand your point, so I was trying to solicit more information.

Mostly I didn't understand the last part. The first part makes sense (the market is bullish right now), but I would like to know what you mean by "contrarian investors"

Regarding turning points for fixtures for bigger teams:

GW5 MUN turn bad til GW10
    GW6 MCI turn good
    GW7 ARS turn good
    GW11 TOT turn bad

It's really not that clear overall, even the good patches have the odd bad match in the middle. Turning points aren't really well synchronized either.

Looking to me like Dyer plays slightly more advanced and gets into box slightly more as a goal threat, but Michu is more of a passer and has better assist potential. At 1.1 less Dyer is looking pretty handy to me. I mean a 5.6 goal threat normally is irresistible.

If I knew Rooney was still on pens I'd go with Michu & Rooney but I just can't know. Plus all these noises SAF was making about the team needing to be RVP-centric really are inclining me towards him. It's all pointing towards him being main striker

Newcastle conceded 34 away goals last season - One of the worst records in the league. (They only conceded 17 at home which is where their image as a solid team comes from)

This reason at least has been somewhat debunked. Chelsea played on Wednesday, and Newcastle are not expected to field many first teamers on Thursday. If anything Newcastle will be more rested - many of their players will have 3+ more days' rest than Chelsea's. Ben Arfa is guaranteed to be rested because he is suspended for Europa.

I don't have the statistics in front of me, but it would be useful to see the number of clean sheets away. The reason for the high number of goals conceded, is that we fell apart in several games (fulham, spurs, norwich), but were generally quite solid in the others.

If you want to find explanations, Tiote was missing for all of the above games, as was steven taylor. Both massively important to us. Cabeye was missing for the spurs game too.

We should have everybody fit for saturday, so don't expect too many goals.

Yeah I remember those games. Good reasons provided.

http://www.statto.com/football/teams/newcastle-united/2011-2012 tells me Toon kept 47% CS (9) at home and 32% (6) away. Which is actually the three games you cited. All in all if the team is at full strength, yes I expect an equally tough Toon!

BTW another impressive stat there - Newcastle's home record was 6th in league - their away record was 5th!

Got on Michu myself, dumped Maloney. Still have 1.3m up my sleeve. Tempted by Graham, but think I'll hold on to Pog until GW3 at least

I like the choice... i remember world cup '98 when he was a breakout star for the Dutch. He was kind of iconic for a bit, but I personally haven't thought of him for a while, so seeing him as a grav just made me think "shit, Edgar Davids, I remember him"

My all time fav player, I wish he played a couple more years, he was still in good shape in the pre-season match between Luís Figo Foundation and SL Benfica this summer, pace, strenght, decisions and skills all still there.

wow, I had no idea he was still playing. I remember him playing for Spurs back in '05/'06 when the last champions league spot was still wide open, and he had an assist (I believe) in a draw that kept arsenal at bay... for a little. That's the last I rememberr hearing about him. He must be on in age a bit now, right? Will he coach?

I'm tempted to stick with Torres for one more GW - just keep giving him one more chance :-/

Last year I said to myself, ''believe in Torres'', after a couple of GWs I was getting rid of him. I want to believe again but it may be a waste of time (points).

If it hadn't have been for the DGW there really wasn't a chance that I'd have picked him - one goal from two matches is the bare minimum I'd have expected from him - one more game then he's out

Starting to fear the worst yes, but still think on paper they have a squad equal or better to Norwich's and so I think Norwich's ex-manager can get the same goals out of them.

I'm sure they'll improve defensively, but attacking-wise if they don't give the ball to Bent at every chance they may not do that great

they're not great, but i think they will be a bit more attacking than the opening day suggested. Bent said prior to the game that the new tactics are a striker's dream, and then he got no chances haha

One point regarding the Aguero injury that seems to have been lost a bit - I don't think City's strikers are fully interchangeable. Aguero being injured substantially weakens their frontline IMO. Aguero & Tevez is so much stronger than Tevez & Dzeko or Tevez & Balotelli I think.

I like to think - with Aguero and Tevez being the starters, City throw two balls. Aguero out and Tevez remains, throw one ball but more threatening and chances. 😆 stupid analysis but think ya get my point.

If you missed it above, here is my reply about the reason newcastle conceded so many goals away last season-

I don’t have the statistics in front of me, but it would be useful to see the number of clean sheets away.

We should have everybody fit for saturday, so don’t expect too many goals conceded.

We conceded 14 goals in the above 3 games!! That is 41% of all the goals we conceded away! See Isacki's post above for further evidence!

        REPOSTed here:

http://www.statto.com/football...../2011-2012 tells me Toon kept 47% CS (9) at home and 32% (6) away. Which is actually the three games (Fulham, Spurs, Norwich) you cited. All in all if the team is at full strength, yes I expect an equally tough Toon!

BTW another impressive stat there – Newcastle’s home record was 6th in league – their away record was 5th!

true but saying that, if you take the worst three games from any record of 19 games it will take a good chunk out of it.

        BUT probably not 41%

True, I think the fact Tiote & S Taylor were missing for all those makes the point you should exclude those games from analysis if you're talking about a Newcastle side playing with them - which is what we're dealing with on Saturday.

The key is the explanation for why we fell apart in those games. We didn't have two of our key defensive players. Everyone should be fit and ready for saturday!

If we look further into it, we conceded 4 against norwich, because we had both centre backs out, so had perchinio and simpson at centre back (both less than 6 foot), against holt and morrison!!

Nothing new. I think that if we do sign one, it will be debuchy. Offer on the table, and we're hoping the lille chairman caves in. If he doesn't then we will likely continue with simpson, at least until the january window
