The flag stayed down to allow Fernando Torres to deliver on a night that saw Hazard sparkle again. Brave Reading went home with nothing but put up a fight as their budget options confirmed their potential. Let’s check the stock…

On the Up

Eden Hazard
Five assists marks a remarkable start to Hazard’s Fantasy season and already confirms him as a major Fantasy asset. He’s mesmerising skill and pace, combined with the freedom to join the attack from all areas, has thrust Hazard to the top of our midfield shopping list – once the Gameweek 3 blank has passed of course.

Frank Lampard
Lampard may well rely on spot-kicks for returns but with Hazard in the side, he looks set to get plenty of them. The Belgian’s tricky feet are drawing fouls, seemingly handing Chelsea deadballs and penalties aplenty.

Fernando Torres
Torres left it late but he eventually delivered on the captaincy with a goal that just about justified the faith shown in him. We will still look to Hazard and wonder what might have been, while Robin Van Persie still looks ridiculously tempting for those with the funds to wave goodbye to El Nino for the weekend. It’s still a big decision for those with cracks elsewhere and with bandwagons rolling.

Pavel Pogrebnyak
The Russian delivered on his budget promise with a superb glancing header to bring Reading on terms. Pogrebnyak looks destined to lead the line home and away for the Royals and, as we’ve stressed all through the pre-season, offers a superb third striker option for those looking to reserve funds.

Danny Guthrie
Talking of budget options, Reading look to have a mix of them. The widemen Jobi McAnuff and Gareth McClearly put in strong displays again but it will be Guthrie, playing up in support of the lone striker and at just 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League game, that will rouse interest.

Going Down

Petr Cech
A calamitous error for Reading’s second goal drew visible frustration from manager Roberto Di Matteo and will give cause concern for those holding Chelsea defenders. We’ve seen his confidence waver in previous seasons. Worrying.

Juan Mata
While Hazard, Lampard and Torres delivered returns, Mata was the odd one out, offering two blanks over the double Gameweek. We know that Di Matteo is planning a rest for the playmaker, while it’s doubtful that this will start early against Newcastle, it’s not out of the question given the jaded performances so far.

Adam Le Fondre
Brian McDermot started tonight’s game in a 4-5-1, pushing Guthrie up to support Pogrebnyak. Le Fondre dropped to the bench then and will presumably be at risk when Reading are on the road.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Isacki, as an arsenal fan, who has highlighted kagawa as a player to have, I'm thinking of switching Carzola - Kagawa, and then potentially getting Carzola back any time after GW5 (he has stk, liv, SOT, mci). I would have gone for VDV, but don't know if he will start. If I don't make the switch this week, it won't be worth it, so I can't wait and see.

can you be that much more sure of kagawa starting than VDV? both could suffer from rotation in theory.

You're right of course. But after the first game, you have to expect kagawa to start, and VDV is unknown

true. then again VDV is much more of a differential and could be REALLY destructive if he starts at home to west brom and particularly norwich. it's a tricky call.

In the long run, I think your defense is too expensive, which is why your only united option is in midfield instead of having the option of getting out torres. Cazorla or Kagawa (or VDV) are all to similar at this point... surely prospects, but there's enough in their "Con" column to dissuade. Why not ditch Terry.

Still leaves you without the option of a United striker, which means Kagawa really is the best choice, even though 1) Cazorla could score just as well, and 2) he could no longer be "in the hole" if both Rooney and RVP start. I'm not sold on Kagawa, basically... that is the bias from which these comments are coming.

Understood. But my final team was set up purposely without space for a united striker. I had rooney all the way through, until the RVP news. Now I don't want either. If one of them proves to be a "must have" then I am happy to take a hit to bring him in, but otherwise I will go without

Fair enough... its probably best actually.

The original question, then (after I took it to left field) is still Cazorla to Kagawa, yay or nay, right? I'm personally a nay. I think they're too even to warrant a transfer, even given the fixtures.

Not sure I would lose Cazorla if I had him. Looks a great player, pretty nailed on, has great creativity and isn't afraid to shoot. I think sto and SOT are actually decent fixtures. SOT is obvious, but sto are not what they used to be. I think they will struggle this season and I can see us scoring 2 or 3 in that game.

I'd wait another week on VDV personally. Every chance he doesn't start again at the w/e, which would be gutting if you brought him in.

Ok, so after seeing Torres play 2 games, which option do we think is best of these 2?

    a) No further transfers this week, Bale(c) and then do Torres -> RVP/Rooney/Ba/Adebayor/any striker that looks in good nick in GW3.

    b) Torres -> RVP/Rooney(c) this week for a hit, and then Lampard -> Nasri/Kagawa in GW3.

Hits are usually a bad thing, but since I still have 2 CHE and 1 REA outfield player I'd have to play some claggy defenders in GW3 if I do a), e.g. Cuellar (swa) or Clyne (MUN). Upside of a) is no point deduction and a further week to assess strikers. Votes please!

    De Gea
    Zabaleta, Cuellar, Clyne
    Lampard, Bale(c), Pienaar, Michu
    Torres, Tevez, Podolski
    Bank 3.0m

i was oohing and aahing for a while but it's looking like A for now. nobody is really standing out as a prime candidate for me, adebayor might not play gw2 (who knows?), and then might not be first choice anyway if they get damiao in for example. i like the look of jelavic's fixtures but i already have pienaar, obviously graham is great but i already have michu and dyer, i also have bent already and tevez.... i can't think of anyone worth taking a hit for except POSSIBLY rooney/rvp, but i feel like that situation is too uncertain right now. utd could be on for a really really slow start...

Probably right. If RVP or Rooney showed any sign of form in GW1 i'd almost certainly do a). Now it's a risk. Given my likely transfer in GW3 (Lamps -> Nasri), the matchup would effectively be:

        a) Torres (NEW), Bale (WBA), Cuellar (swa) + 4 points
        b) RVP(c) (FUL), Nasri (QPR)

So 3 games each, but one of a)'s isn't great. Still reckon a) wins on points?

Evening folks. Here's my projected team for GW2:

    DDG
    Terry-Zab-Cuellar
    Bale-Mata-Larsson-Michu
    Torres-Tevez-Graham

1 EXTREMELY IMPORTANT QUESTION: Will Mata's price drop?

If so, I might be willing to take a hit to get Mata+Torres out for RVP and a midfielder.

    Thoughts?

Kinda similar to me - the hit is tempting in order to get RVP, but I think the right call here is to hold fire and assess players for one more week.

Torres & Mata (and perhaps even Terry) can all go next week. If they look good in GW2, I like the idea of Torres & Mata -> RVP & Nasri/Kagawa in GW3.

I replaced Mata already for fear that he might drop.

I wouldn't take a hit though at this point. Just Mata > a MUN mid. Not ideal, but you don't have the means to get RVP or Rooney without a hit, and it'll have to do.

i'm not taking a hit but in your shoes i would. i planned very carefully for GW3 to make sure having the four absent players wouldn't leave me short - no clyne etc for that reason. but you've got too many players up against big teams aside from the chelsea/reading absentees. if you've got a nailed on 0-2 pointer in your first team then the hit is worth a gamble IMO - especially with a striker with a good fixture.

        IMO absolutely!

Torres looks disinterested (as usual) and Mata is very much playing second fiddle to Hazard (plus theres the threat of rest hanging over him)

Kagawa looked great (worth way more than 8.5) and RVP will be the main man for Utd this year I think (wrote what I thought on the Roon vs RVP saga last page)

Does it matter if he will score more than those twos COMBINED total?

You can only have 3 strikers so its a moot point surely?

BUT as you asked I think its entirely possible yes. RVP will be the main for Utd in my opinion so I think he will score big points again this season.

The Fulham game was an anomoly (rather like the QPR vs Bolton game last season). Everybody thought Klasnic would score massive points at this stage too but it didnt work out that way. Petric (and Lambert) could easily go the same way

Yeh I'm not a big fan of hits but maybe took eight 4pters last season and they mainly paid off well

The way I see it is that you can take 4pters if your team is in a mess or you are doing it to get as many DGWers in your team as possible.

For all of you techies out there (or even the scouts), would it be possible to set up a model, to calculate when players are over performing.

For example, RVP's price would have been set, based on what fpl expect his total season score to be. Say 250pts. Or 6.6pts per game. In my opinion, he would have to score at OVER this rate over the season to make him worth having. I just can't see this happening.

The key to this game, is highlighting the players that are undervalued, who will score at higher the predicted ppg.

    Does that make sense?

Obviously the captain factor comes into it, but whereas for arsenal, if arsenal did well, nine times out of ten, RVP was the best captain option, when Man Utd do well, any number of players could be the best captain option

I think you've nailed it right there. At almost any price last year, RVP would have been worth it because he was a money in the bank captain's choice. We are all searching for that player right now. Who knows if one will emerge. It may well still RVP, but as you've said ... we don't know yet. I'm torn on the same issue that many are having right now. I've already made my transfer, but I have the funds to bring RVP (or Rooney) in for a hit. But is it worth it yet? And which one should I get? Because I don't know the answer to these questions yet, I think the smart play is to roll with my lineup and hope Man U don't make me pay the price this weekend. But that doesn't mean I will be able to resist the lure of RVP. He was so good to us last year ...

FPL doesn't work that way though.

Players regardless of price can be valuable at any time. The key is having the right players at the right time. Some supposedly useless picks like OoP Coleman and Elmohamady, who had their short spurts of points but ended up sub 100 turned out to be good picks while their form held. Even Raylor to a degree.

I could probably pick a team now who I think represent value and will score well over the whole season.

In fact, last season, I predicted Rooney would be top goal scorer, Sinclair would be the best budget (6.5 or under) mid and Silva would get the most assists.

I got two of those right, and Rooney was second highest total points scorer.

But I still got off to a dismal start because Sinclair didn't produce for the first 6 weeks or so I had him, everybody had Silva, and Rooney was tearing it up so I missed the start of RVP's explosion.

      It's all relative.

Good post. Timing is obviously huge. And it doesn't take a genius right now to look at Man U's fixtures and want a piece of the action for the next three weeks. But, unlike last year (Rooney with Man U, RVP with Arsenal, even Aguero with City), we don't know what piece.

I am thinking to do Larsson to Hazard and Torres to Adebyor. Need your views will Hazard be lethal against Tiote, Gutheriez and team.

We are unlikely to play more than 2-3 first teamers tonight. The ones that we do are likely to be the fittest lads, who will have no problem playing the two games (ie Jonas)

See my comments on the last page about the toon defence away from home last year. Don't be fooled by the total goals conceded

Chelsea will be more tired than newcastle, with all of their main players playing yesterday

Chelsea might score, but don't expect many

Larsson might be a decent option now that they have bought a target man (fletcher) and have a decent run of fixtures)

just to make a general point, in reply to something said above: ""Was always going to have to take a hit when I decided to have 3 Chelsea and 2 Reading going into GW1"

this isn't technically true, as you can transfer out 2 of those and bench the other 3. i'll grant you, it means the remaining players need to be rock solid, no southamptons or qprs or norwichs etc--but it is possible. i had 3 chelsea and 1 reading and i'm *fairly* happy with my gw3 first team. it's not great, but i can't see a nailed on 5 point improvement in 1 transfer anywhere... certainly not in RVP - i can see fulham subverting their traditional away day blues this season, and utd look like starting slowly.

sure, but my point is having that many chelsea/reading players does not *in itself* necessitate taking a hit. benching them for that one GW may be preferable to taking a hit, provided you have adequate cover. early season is so unpredictable that it's really hard to say who'll do well anyway - a guy above was considering taking a hit because he has cuellar gw3, but cuellar just got a cleanie vs. arsenal.

Yeh I hear what your saying but it just seems a massive waste to have people like Torres, Mata or Ivan sat on the bench when I could invest that money elsewhere to have dangerous players ON the pitch like RVP/Roon etc.......

To be honest if I wanted to keep the Chelsea players I have then it would be a more difficult decision (i.e if I had Hazard then I wouldnt be selling so easy)

But as far as I'm concerned Mata and Torres arent worth the money so I might as well get rid now. I signed them with DGW in mind and they have done their job............close the door on the way out thanks

I've tried several times over the last few days, to get backing on here for my planned carzola out transfer (then back in GW6). But I have been warned off it almost to a man, so I think that in this case I will stick. I'm traditionally a fixtures man, but I might as well use this to try out the form over fixtures argument that beat me so often last season!! (NB of course the combination of good fixtures + good form is what you really want to aim for!!)

sorry just got back. see my reply on page 21 btw. back to the point, I think your cazorla transfer out and then back in makes sense especially with the fixtures. my only question is if it is worth the extra transfer. with an extra transfer you can sort out some problem you have come down the road, bank it or use it to solve your 5th mid problem (though that is obviously not high priority but should probably be sorted out at some point)

the thing with arsenal is that they're pretty free-scoring against nearly everybody, and certainly the best attacking alternative to the three rotation nightmares that are utd, city and chelsea. cazorla seems like being their highest scoring player this season; the only other midfielder i find even more nailed on to start and destructive regardless of fixtures is bale, and you've got him already. sticking could be a nice play!

Oh dear. Rodgers isn't very happy about our bid for carroll. I don't know what he is complaining about. We made a bid, its up to them if they accept it or not. Nothing to get pissy about. Ok, we wanted him on loan, with them paying half his wages, with us "maybe" taking him at the end of the season for 12m. But if they don't like the offer, they won't accept it! We've got a saying back home in geordieland that I think is very apt here "shy bairns get nowt".

I think the point is, that he wouldn't really fit into our team, but Mike Ashley loves a good deal, and so if he could bend liverpool over a barrel and get him on our terms, he would, and then worry about how to fit him into the team later!!

We do need another striker, but I think that we would be better off going for a young lad with lots of potential who won't mind sitting on the bench and playing the cup games to begin with

Not sure that carroll would be happy moving from liverpools bench to our bench (with a massive pay cut)

rvp is unproven right now and very risky wait for him to perform
fantasy football is all about form and fixtures -

My gut feeling is manchester united will come strong next game with a HOME fixture
          Get Kagawa i would say

would you rather field barfa againt chelsea or kagawa against manu ?

Now this was my team for GW1

    Federici, Green
    Ivanovic, Kompany, Clyne, Cuellar, Demel
    Mata, Bale, Michu, Noble, Guthrie
    Torres, Aguero, Petric

Now as you all know that Aguero is not gonna be back until mid september. So Aguero to Tevez is one safe and good option i guess.
I was thinking about swapping torres this week, but Aguero's injury has put me in utter confusion.

Mata too was not upto his mark in the two games, so i was thinking about going for a 4 point hit thus swapping him for Kagawa or Nasri....

    What do you think guys?
Mata might not start against newcastle because of the UEFA super cup to be played. RDM might rest him from newcastle match. Also I think i am more inclined to nasri because of his recent form. Nasri was vital for city in both community shield match and Game week 1. So i feel that he might start again in the second game week too...

    your opinions please guys....

      take a 4 point hit

      aguero --> tevez
      mata --> kagawa

      will pay off most likely
      you need manu coverage

I am in a similar boat except do not have the Aguero conundrum. Mata must go. It would be easy to swap him for Hazard except for the blues fixtures. Kagawa looks class but where will he play now that RVP will start. If they play with a fluid front 3 okay but if he gets shunted out wide I am not so sure. Nasri looks better this season but a less than optimal fixture this week. Hmmm I am thinking Kagawa but worried about him being the sort of player who makes the pass before the assist

how does this look for gw2:

    de gea
    lescott, a cole, cuellar
    bale, cazorla, kagawa, michu
    tevez, torres, graham

    bench: begovic, noble, mccartney

only change is lampard to kagawa. i thought i should have some utd cover before going into gw2.

Ok, so since Mata will likely drop by next gameweek I have 2 options:

    A) (no hit) Mata-> Kag -assess strikers RVP/Roon, bring one in GW3.

    OR

    B) (-4 hit) Mata+Torres-> Kag/RVP(C) -hoping to score big and that RVP has his shooting boots on in his home debut.

Agree he should've had a couple of assists. But that does not make him nailed on to start the next match. I'm not saying he won't, but I'm not sure he will. There's talk of Evans being fit for Saturday. If true, Carrick will take up one midfield spot meaning only one of Scholes, Kagawa, Cleverley, Anderson will start.

Guys mind to have a look at my team?

Didnt do too bad in the end with 58 pts. Already madethe michu for mata transfer before price rise. I just wonder if i should bring in a man utd attack cover in for the hit now or wait because im not sure if my starting 11 is good enough? Right now my bench is fed noble demel hangeland...... Have plenty in the bank

Taarabt is the first on the chopping block for me. Gw3-Gw5 fixtures are very hard. I'd say no hit this week, but he's first to go next week. Maybe for Barfa or if Valencia gets moved forward
