While Brendan Rodgers struggles for attacking options and John Henry issues an open letter to Liverpool fans after a limp display against Arsenal, the Reds unwanted forward, Andy Carroll, made an instant impact for West Ham last Saturday. With the on-loan Carroll installed as the lone frontman, Sam Allardyce’s side blew away Fulham 3-0 at Upton Park – in this week’s Technical Area, we take a look as to how his presence affected both the team’s overall play and the performance of a couple of his new Hammers’ team mates:

Andy Carroll

Looking at West Ham’s average position over their first two home games, Carroll’s impact is obvious. Against Villa in Gameweek 1 (above left) with Carlton Cole (9) leading the line, Ricardo Vaz Te (12) was the most advanced Hammer when in possession, with Cole often dropping back to receive the ball. Last weekend, however, Carroll (8) gave the side a real focal point up top (above right), affording his side a more compact shape behind. Looking at the stats comparison between Carroll and Cole in Gameweek 3 and 1 respectively, the difference is marked.

Swansea Average Positions Vs QPR 2012
Swansea Average Positions Vs QPR 2012

Despite playing 68 minutes against Fulham to Cole’s 81 minutes in the Villa match, Carroll was far more involved in West Ham’s overall play. He made 49 touches overall to Cole’s 29, with 35 touches in the opponents’ final third – almost double the 20 managed by Cole in Gameweek 1, while Carroll also saw nine touches in the opponents’ box, a tally up on Cole’s six.

TimeTouchesTouches Final 3rdTouches Pen BoxPasses Final 3rdChances CreatedAerial DuelsAerial Duels Won
Carroll (FUL)6849359.0112159
Cole (AVL)8129206.04094
Carroll 2011/1263.137.618.96.35.91.26.74.3

In terms of distribution, Carroll made almost three times the number of successful passes in the final third than Cole (11 to four) and his aerial presence was obvious – he was involved in 15 challenges in the air, winning nine, while Cole won four of nine against Villa. Surprisingly, West Ham made less crosses with Carroll leading the line than Cole (22 to 24) but what was noticeable was the overall balance was better. Against Villa, with Vaz Te stationed so far forward, only 33.3% of their crosses came from the right, whereas the cross distribution was 50% from both flanks in the 3-0 win over Fulham.

Analysing Carroll’s stats from Saturday against his Liverpool figures from last term, it’s already clear to see that Allardyce is utilising him in a more efficient manner. He averaged just 18.3 touches in the final third for the Anfield side in 2011/12 – almost half the weekend’s 35, while he also saw more of the ball in the box (nine to 6.3) and also won more than double the number of headers (nine to 4.3) than the previous campaign. Allardyce is wasting little time in playing to Carroll’s strengths, then, with a clear reliance on the new number eight to step us a key figure in West Ham’s season; while the new boy failed to produce any attacking returns at the weekend, his presence alone has made a definite difference to those around him.

Kevin Nolan

While the above average position maps show Nolan (4) similarly positioned when on the ball over the two home games, the Hammers skipper was far more involved against Fulham. Nolan has 52 touches in the 3-0 win compared to just 31 against Villa in Gameweek 1, an average of 1.8 per minute to 2.4. The midfielder was afforded more space to play in midfield – he received 35 passes in the Cottagers match, compared to only 14 against Villa and also received double the number of passes in the final third (12 to six) with Carroll leading the line.

TouchesMins/ TouchPasses ReceivedPasses Received Final 3rdTouches Penalty BoxGoal Attempts
Nolan (FUL)521.8351223
Nolan (AVL)312.414623

Intriguingly, Nolan still managed the same number of touches in the penalty area and number of goal attempts in both games (two and three respectively), though with his goal handing the Hammers the lead within a couple of minutes, there was little need to continually bomb forward.

Chances Created

Swansea Average Positions Vs QPR 2012
Swansea Average Positions Vs QPR 2012

At a glance, the difference between the number of chances created in both home games and the initial position of each opportunity is dramatic. West Ham made just six “key passes” in the Villa game (above left) with three of those produced from a central area in the attacking third.

Against Fulham, however, there was a substantial improvement, with Ricardo Vaz Te, in particular, proving to be a strong creative presence on the right of the front three. The Hammers created 15 chances against Martin Jol’s men (above right), with 10 of those coming in the middle of the final third and a look at Vaz Te’s stats in both games highlights the difference in his role. In the Villa game, he made just seven successful passes in the final third and created two chances – at the weekend, he completed 22 passes in the final third and made seven “key passes” that led to goalscoring opportunities and picked up an assist. Clearly, Carroll’s introduction is not only seeing a positive effect in the Hammers overall play, a better overall balance could well boost the prospects of a number of West Ham options if they continue in the same vein over the weeks ahead.

for the WCers like me. i think the following players have the ability to go up by .2 and make u a .1 profit:

    -McAuley
    -nolan
-demel(unless any news regarding his injury comes out)
    -jenkinson
    -reid winston
    -lambert
    -cazorla

of course, the likes of RVP,michu, dyer, hazard or even tevez will rise more than once but ur not looking to make profit from such players.(u could add cazorla to that list too).

        re: The Lambert thing

that sounds like a plan but I don’t think you will have the cash. When I tried swapping in Lambert and Cazorla I had 0.2 left. But then again you are downgrading Pienaar so you could probably do it. Unless I dumped Johnson I’m not sure I could. But maybe by GW7 I will know better if Johnson is worth holding or not.

So might have to forget either Cazorla or Ramirez unless Hazard is the player I lose

Anyone have that article written by Doos about wildcarding? would be much appreciated...

Re: Triggerlips and others talking about the benefits of WC'ing this week.

I can't help but feel WC'ing would be less essential right now if it wasn't for RVP. It's the main reason to WC as you can make several changes to fit him in. All this talk on value, I don't think anyone would be as keen on playing it if they:
    A) already had RVP or
    B) RVP wasn't close to 13.5m already

No, don't take hits before international games. Loads of the players you're talking about will be involved.

Lampard to Hazard MAYBE after the break. In reality I think it's worth waiting til you can do it on a free.

Similar to JamsieP I have taken a four point hit. is it worth going for the wildcard too? My team after hit is:

    DDG / Federici

    Hangeland / A Cole / Ben Davies / Fabio / Clyne

    Hazard / Cazorla / Yaya / Michu / Kaca

    Tevez / Adebayor / Podolski

And my wildcard team would be:

    Jaask / 4.5m keeper

    McCauley / A Cole / Ben Davies / Cuellar / Hangeland

    Hazard / Cazorla / Routledge / Yaya / Sterling

    RVP / Tevez / Berbatov

Can my non-wildcard team hold out for now???

For those that didn't see it earlier, here is the list I put together of possible Neil Taylor replacements, all of these are available for free

    Premier League:
    Ricardo Gardner – 33
    Paul Robinson – 33

    Championship:
    Herita Ilunga – 30
    Brian Easton – 24
    Lee Naylor – 32

    Ligue 1:
    Jeremy Berthod – 28
    Djimi Traore – 32

    Serie A:
    Fabio Grosso – 34
Gianluca Zambrotta – 35 (Right Back but included as is a big name)

    Bundesliga:
    Sebastian Boenisch – 25
    Andreas Ibertsberger – 30

    La Liga:
    Asier del Horno – 31

    Jupiler Pro League (Belgium):
Anthony Vanden Borre – 24 (Right Back but could be a good option)

Boenisch seems to be the stand out in that list

This is my obsession as well. The problem is that I can field 11, they are all capable of points, and I have RVP, Tevez, Hazard, Michu, Pienaar, and HBA. In other words, I cannot justify 4-8 hits. But I want him for the Ston match!

    Hey Chaps!

    On the whole to-wildcard-or-not-to-wildcard question…

Last couple of seasons I’ve been very much “don’t take a hit, don’t WC unless you absolutely have to, softly softly catchy monkey”.

However, this hasn’t really paid off. This year I’ve resolved to be a bit more aggressive. I still think that the WC is worth saving and hits should be avoided… but I’ve just taken a 12 point hit.

Here’s why: there are some prospects that can’t be ignored – RVP, Hazard, Tevez, Michu, Yaya. These 5 seem like phenomenal FF assets this year. Consequently their prices are going to shoot up. This would have priced me out, and meant that I couldn’t have the team I wanted. By getting on them now, not only do I have them, I gain the dollars as their prices shoot up.

I had Tevez & Yaya from the off. Had Michu from gw2, but I’ve just spent 12 points getting RVP, Hazard and Cazorla in. I think they should be able to recoup that in a pretty short space of time.

I wouldn’t normally do this with the international games happening too, but I do still have the WC in reserve if I need to make further changes, and that would then wipe out the point hit. I’ve already benefitted from ditching Bale, Sigurdsson and Tomkins who all went down in value last night, and it looks like I could have as many as 6 risers tonight. That’s some insurance in case I have to make more changes.

Next question, is what to do about Zabaleta in Sky – hold despite the threat of Maicon, or shift for another defender? Can afford anything up to 6.9 for a companion to Baines and Kightly in my back 3…

I'd just wildcard to avoid the big hit to be honest.

How much is Vermaelen in the Sky game? Arsenal looking solid and only a matter of time before he scores a goal.

You've just taken two points hits to bring in players with two competitive fixtures before their next premier league game (as do loads of the other players in your squad who you may need to replace?) This is a textbook error, and you'll be relying on a little luck to get over it. Hope you get it.

        3 hits 😉 I've brought 5 players in...

But I can use the wildcard if I have any injuries. This way I can get the price rises, and if I'm lucky still come out with a wildcard in tact. If I do have an injury pile-up I can make a 12 point profit from invoking the WC.

Put it another way, I'm wildcarding, but I'm deferring the invocation of the actual wildcard in case I can scrape through the internationals unscathed.

We are only 3 games in though. So (excepting RVP and perhaps Hazard) everyone you mentioned could well be surpassed by a new 'must have'. For Michu read Hernandez or Dyer or Graham. For Tevez think Aguero, For Yaya think a fit again Silva.

Even Hazard has only had three games. Wecant be sure he'll continue this rich vein of form. Talk of the new Ronaldo are premature at this stage.

Just think if you have a good side with some of the players you mentioned, theres no need to throw away a possible advantage later in the season when you might really need it.

*****If you dont have RVP though. I suggest you WC 😉

True, and much the attitude that left me in a mediocre slump last season. Fortunately I was spurred into action by the presence of Tomkins, Giroud, Bale and Sigurdsson in my team.

And I know that there's nothing to stop Spurs scoring twelve vs Reading, but if they do, I can just jump on Bale again. That's what being more hands-on gives you. Rather than kicking yourself about the players with all the stats and none of the points languishing in your squad while all the bright new sparks tear it up.

Cue those Tomkins, Giroud, Bale and Sigurdsson tearing it up this week.

I'm not trying to be a smug git (famous last words before someone goes on to be a smug git) but it's really great for RVP owners that he is now forcing people to WC on the back of needing him in the team and having to completely change the make-up of their side to do it.

I'm happy to have my WC primed for a future possible bumper DGW or maybe just a woeful lack of form where I want to make multiple changes.

I'll probably end up wasting it later in the season anyway but it just feels like an advantage right now

Having wildcarded, I now find myself with, apart from GKs (where I'm still undecided on what to do) only Rangel and Tevez out of my GW1 squad left in my team. So I guess wildcarding was probably justified. Arguably should have done it Sat... Other bonus of course if that I now have 2 weeks of tinkering fun rather than 2 weeks of wondering whether or not I've made a mistake in not widcarding ...... 🙂
