With both UEFA World Cup qualifiers finishing goalless yesterday, it was left to the African Cup of Nations games to provide the goals. Here’s a brief update of the main protagonists, with a little injury news also thrown in:

Emmanuel Adebayor was on the score sheet for Togo in a 1-1 draw away to Gabon, while Victor Moses provided an assist in Nigeria’s 2-2 draw with Liberia. The Chelsea new boy was brought down in the box, allowing Ikechukwu Uche the chance to slot home from the spot.

Ivory Coast’s 4-2 win over Senegal saw a trio of domestic players produce the goods. Gervinho and Yaya Toure provided two assists apiece for the hosts, with the former also finding the net once, while Papiss Cisse returned an assist and a 25-yard headed goal.

In Other News
Sergio Aguero is set to fly back to City to continue treatment on his knee injury after he was ruled out of Argentina’s game with Peru on Tuesday. He took to twitter to admit:

It seems I won’t be able to make it to the Peru match – but the effort was still worth it. I’ll continue the recovery work at Manchester. Rooting for to the guys for the Peru match, I hope I can join them next time. Returning to @MCFC now to ready for the upcoming challenge.

Although Mancini has hoped Aguero will be fit for Gameweek 4, City face a real physical battle against Stoke at the Britannia. It’s perhaps the type of game the City boss will be happy to continue with Edin Dzeko alongside Carlos Tevez – the Bosnian has netted twice already for his side and bagged a hat-trick for his country in an 8-1 win over Liechtenstein on Friday.

Phil Jones is set to spend another spell on the sidelines after picking up a knee problem in training, according to the club’s official website:

Phil Jones has had surgery on a knee meniscus tear sustained in training that will require six to eight weeks of rehabilitation.

The former Blackburn man has yet to feature this season for Sir Alex Ferguson’s side due to a back problem and with Chris Smalling still unavailable, Rafael remains the club’s only natural right-back. Certainly, the Brazilian looks nailed-on to start the Gameweek 4 home clash against Wigan and could profit from the pair’s absence but, with United (liv, TOT, new) to follow, his frailty at the back may see Antonio Valencia come back into consideration in defence. The Ecuadorian got the nod for the Gameweek 1 trip to Everton and could well be asked to return to the role as Ferguson looks to tighten up a backline that has yet to return a single clean sheet.

Ashley Cole has been ruled out of England’s match with Ukraine on Tuesday, with the news casting concerns over his availability for Chelsea’s Gameweek 4 trip to QPR. The left-back also missed Friday night’s win in Moldova and with the FA also revealing John Terry continues to be a doubt with a twisted ankle, the defensive worries are starting to rack up for Roberto Di Matteo. Cole’s possible absence could hand Ryan Bertrand another chance in the first XI, while David Luiz and Gary Cahill may be set to continue the partnership that returned a clean sheet against Newcastle in Gameweek 3. Di Matteo also has new right-back Cesar Azpilicueta to consider – a start for the signing from Marseille could see Branislav Ivanovic move into a central position.

Hungary have revealed Zoltan Gera was subbed off at half-time in Friday’s win over Andorra after picking up an Achilles knock. The West Brom midfielder – who has scored in his only appearances so far this term – netted a spot-kick in the 5-0 triumph before making way and is expected to sit out Tuesday’s match with Holland as a precautionary measure.

Micah Richards is hoping to return to light training for City before the end of the month. The right-back has yet to feature this term after picking up an ankle injury while representing Great Britain in the Olympics, though reports suggest a first-team comeback could be on the cards for mid-October. The purchase of Maicon from Inter, however, seems tailor-made for City’s recent flirtation with a 3-5-2 and with Pablo Zabaleta also firmly in the frame, Richards faces a real struggle to establish himself within Roberto Mancini’s starting lineup.

Who was that guy I remember seeing on here last week that was asking if his name was linked correctly?

He had a really impressive history, finishing in the top 10,000 for 6 consecutive seasons I believe!

Berbatov and Rodallega played well together after Petric went off - both are sure to get some minutes so I can't see Petric playing the full 90. Plus he hasn't played the full 90 in any of the 3 previous matches, even without Berbatov.

Kerim Frei - The next bandwagon

On my watch list , down to 4.4 now and I can see him being the dempsey replacement
Had a good few mins last year , and tweeted that should be back from injury next week , although obv may need some time
I like the player , skilful and could be very Ben arfa like source of points . Fulham are not exactly stacked with attacking talent .

Good fixtures as well coming up

What do you all think ?

But he is a great prospect, looked great running with the ball last season.

    Jaas -- Vorm

I have Begovic with Vorm. It looks good as a combo and I'd back Stoke to keep many more clean sheers than West Ham (plus you have a WHU defender already).

I also don't like the doubling of Swansea midfielders and Pogrebnyak could be upgraded to somebody you want for £1m or so.

No-one I've seen has mentioned Odemwingie as an option at 7m, maybe with good reason as he's done nothing yet this season but with WBA's fixtures easing up he could be a good alternative. He's been really inconsistent before but when he gets going he can get hat-tricks out of nowhere. 7m aint bad and I'd rate him over Shane Long. Just a thought.

I'd put him above Berbatov as viable options at the price range, maybe not Fletcher. He's as capable as anyone at scoring 15 goals as long as he stays injury free as he's by far West Brom's best attacking player. But personally finding space for a mid-priced striker isn't priority #1 right now and I'm sure that's the case for a lot of people.

It has to be considered but difficulty also plays a part. I don't expect WBA or WH to keep many CSs away so it's asking a bit much, whereas WBA and Stoke rotate very well H/A and both are very solid defensively at home. Apart from GW8 it's significantly better imo.

I don't really think there is in quite a few, Norwich at home where they attack a fair bit, QPR at home are decent, despite a poor start in GW1, Southampton seem like they will score everywhere, Wigan away is no longer as easy as it used to be, Sunderland/Swansea away..well you said yourself above you expect them to score goals.

Yep, there are some tough games in that mix too, but you'll get that with any rotation, even if you used keepers from only the big teams. I still haven't seen a better GK combination for 9.5m than this.

Morning FPL'ers. I'm WC activated and have the nucleus of my side down. Take a look at this :

    Foster Begovic

    Baines Vertonghen Boyce Demel Davies

    Hazard Cazorla Michu Morrison Guthrie

    RVP Tevez Lambert

    Options I'm thinking of:

    A. Vertonghen Morrison Lambert -> Cuellar Barfa Fletcher
    B. Boyce Lambert -> Clyne Fletcher
    C. Keep the current side shown above.

    Thought much appreciated.

i like A tbh. is berbatov affordable? possibly him over felcher. the three out are all good bets tho. i'd also make boyce cuellar. .5 can't be sniffed at esp. as i consider 5 mil a bit steep for a wigan defender. OOP or no

Cheers MTX. I do like option A also, as sacrificing Vertonghen (who is yet unproven but I feel a points machine over the season...) allows me to get Barfa and Fletcher.

Also having Fletcher I can change to Berbs really easily, whereas with Lambert it's difficult.

Boyce at 5m? If Wigan continue with 3-5-2 BOyce is effectively a midfielder, so for 5m I like him. His stats against other similar priced defenders for final 3rd involvement is also very impressive.

Was going through Books to bring to the charity shop when I cam across Merson's "How Not To Be A Professional Footballer". Absolute shit, didn't even finish it. I did remember this bit though.

Re: Liverpool V Arsenal 1989 (We all remember how that went)

After traveling up on the Friday, George Graham called the team together that evening to talk tactics

"Listen, don't go out there and try to score two goals in the first 20 minutes. Keep it tight in the first half, because if they score first, we'll have to get three or four goals at Anfield and that's next to impossible. Get in at half-time with the game at nil-nil.
In the second half, you'll go out and score. Then, with 15mins to go, I'll change the team around, they'll shit themselves, you'll have a right old go, score again and win the game 2-0. Ok?"

    Amazing huh?
