With both UEFA World Cup qualifiers finishing goalless yesterday, it was left to the African Cup of Nations games to provide the goals. Here’s a brief update of the main protagonists, with a little injury news also thrown in:

Emmanuel Adebayor was on the score sheet for Togo in a 1-1 draw away to Gabon, while Victor Moses provided an assist in Nigeria’s 2-2 draw with Liberia. The Chelsea new boy was brought down in the box, allowing Ikechukwu Uche the chance to slot home from the spot.

Ivory Coast’s 4-2 win over Senegal saw a trio of domestic players produce the goods. Gervinho and Yaya Toure provided two assists apiece for the hosts, with the former also finding the net once, while Papiss Cisse returned an assist and a 25-yard headed goal.

In Other News
Sergio Aguero is set to fly back to City to continue treatment on his knee injury after he was ruled out of Argentina’s game with Peru on Tuesday. He took to twitter to admit:

It seems I won’t be able to make it to the Peru match – but the effort was still worth it. I’ll continue the recovery work at Manchester. Rooting for to the guys for the Peru match, I hope I can join them next time. Returning to @MCFC now to ready for the upcoming challenge.

Although Mancini has hoped Aguero will be fit for Gameweek 4, City face a real physical battle against Stoke at the Britannia. It’s perhaps the type of game the City boss will be happy to continue with Edin Dzeko alongside Carlos Tevez – the Bosnian has netted twice already for his side and bagged a hat-trick for his country in an 8-1 win over Liechtenstein on Friday.

Phil Jones is set to spend another spell on the sidelines after picking up a knee problem in training, according to the club’s official website:

Phil Jones has had surgery on a knee meniscus tear sustained in training that will require six to eight weeks of rehabilitation.

The former Blackburn man has yet to feature this season for Sir Alex Ferguson’s side due to a back problem and with Chris Smalling still unavailable, Rafael remains the club’s only natural right-back. Certainly, the Brazilian looks nailed-on to start the Gameweek 4 home clash against Wigan and could profit from the pair’s absence but, with United (liv, TOT, new) to follow, his frailty at the back may see Antonio Valencia come back into consideration in defence. The Ecuadorian got the nod for the Gameweek 1 trip to Everton and could well be asked to return to the role as Ferguson looks to tighten up a backline that has yet to return a single clean sheet.

Ashley Cole has been ruled out of England’s match with Ukraine on Tuesday, with the news casting concerns over his availability for Chelsea’s Gameweek 4 trip to QPR. The left-back also missed Friday night’s win in Moldova and with the FA also revealing John Terry continues to be a doubt with a twisted ankle, the defensive worries are starting to rack up for Roberto Di Matteo. Cole’s possible absence could hand Ryan Bertrand another chance in the first XI, while David Luiz and Gary Cahill may be set to continue the partnership that returned a clean sheet against Newcastle in Gameweek 3. Di Matteo also has new right-back Cesar Azpilicueta to consider – a start for the signing from Marseille could see Branislav Ivanovic move into a central position.

Hungary have revealed Zoltan Gera was subbed off at half-time in Friday’s win over Andorra after picking up an Achilles knock. The West Brom midfielder – who has scored in his only appearances so far this term – netted a spot-kick in the 5-0 triumph before making way and is expected to sit out Tuesday’s match with Holland as a precautionary measure.

Micah Richards is hoping to return to light training for City before the end of the month. The right-back has yet to feature this term after picking up an ankle injury while representing Great Britain in the Olympics, though reports suggest a first-team comeback could be on the cards for mid-October. The purchase of Maicon from Inter, however, seems tailor-made for City’s recent flirtation with a 3-5-2 and with Pablo Zabaleta also firmly in the frame, Richards faces a real struggle to establish himself within Roberto Mancini’s starting lineup.

I know it's kinda random but what price do you think Ronaldo and Messi would be in FPL.

    I'm thinking 17M and 18M respectively...

Why's everybody so high on Cuellar?
They've kept 1 CS in a fixture you would/did bench him then conceded 2 in a fixture you would/did play him.
I'm not hating I just fail to see Cuellar as an amazing option considering he has virtually 0 chance of attacking returns.

Don't think he's an amazing option, but Sunderland haven't played at home yet and keeping a clean sheet at Arsenal shows they are well organized at least.

He also rotates well with S Taylor and is the cheapest way into the Sunderland defence. Picked up a few bonus points at the end of last season too.

Look at SUnderland as a whole. MON builds solid teams defensively, they are strong at home, and have a better squad than last year. All that for 4.5 aint bad.

Also, who is better for that price?

well it's still a 4.5 sundyland defender. for that price you'd usually be lookin at a team without their calibre of players. last season they were solid and i kinda expect an upturn in form soon enough. o' neill is hero. like GB said tho, hughes is a good option if u inclined towards anti-mackemism

He and Sunderland for that matter haven't had a home game yet. Those 2 fixtures were tough, I'd classify Swansea away as being a difficult one for anyone to keep a clean sheet in this season. I wouldn't be so sure about his 0% chance of attacking returns when you consider he probably is up for corners/set pieces and you have Johnson and Larsson, two excellent crossers. He's 4.5 and at that value is worth it. Sunderland will keep clean sheets this year because they're quite efficient under MON. We're hard to beat.

Sunderland defenders usually offer reasonable value, I think, but you have to have them at the right time. Two years ago Bardsley was great for the two months I had him and was only outscored by Fabregas by a couple of points over the period. Sunderland then went on a terrible run - fortunately I'd sold him at just the right time. Last year Turner was great for a couple of months before they ran out of steam in the last few games. Depends on the fixtures but you can't really go wrong at 4.5m.

Norwich, Reading and those few after Utd are very appealing for HBA. There are a lot of options in the 6-7M mid bracket so lots of options if he hits poor form...

But the 1M can improve a defender. Not sold on berba/fletch being worth more than 1M than graham/lambert now.

Am thinking about going with Foster + a 4m goalkeeper. There's only a couple of fixtures between now and the end of Jan that look horrible and there are outfield players of all the teams that rotate GKs well at 9-9.5m that I want defenders from.

Aside from the obvious risks of injury, is this a ridiculous strategy? Am I better off just playing it safe?

Fair enough but it's more a sense that they have a solid back 5, a decent midfield and a manager who is well-known for getting the best out of teams defensively. Add to that good fixtures.

The other point is that I don't see better GK options for 5m without better outfield options. That goes for the teams that would rotate with him too. So it seemed maybe better to save the 0.5 and invest elsewhere.

I have Foster and £4m. He will gain plenty of points and finish the season around 5th in the overall rankings. Having 2 keepers cost excess money and you will get it wrong half the time anyway. Eg Krul TOT or Migs ars 99% of people would pick Krul. And who kept the cs? It is also a saving of £1.5m on that pair. Difference between Gibbs and Gunter.

He'll be central to Fulhams attack this year. How potent that will be without Murphy/Dembele/Dempsey is another matter.

Also, you have to consider Fulhams away record, which is dire. If that continues you have a 7m forward you can only trust 50% of the time.

Juries out for me. Going with Fletcher until I see how he performs.

Bale till GW7 seems logical, but if he continues to fall and Cazorla rises, you may need to downgrade elsewhere to make the move.

It's a move I've done this week. Bale comes back into my squad when he proves his worth. One of my biggest mistakes last year was holding onto Bale during his 8/9 GW dry spell, because I kept expecting him to produce.

Form over fixtures this tear for me.

Jenkinson is short term till Sagna comes back.

Fix these now as you dont want to waste your FT sorting out a keeper and defender.

We have similar WCTs. I agree with AVB=FAIL below though, yaya is overperforming. I went for Maloney + Davies instead of Yaya+Baines, and instead got in podolski over Fletcher which I will make into PCisse next week (arsenal bad fixtures, newcastle amazing). It may be heavy in the front, but having Walker and Zabaleta hasn't really helped me thus far, so why not.

Afternoon lads. Going down to put a bet on for Tueday's games but I'm unsure on one team. Was thinking of Wales to beat Serbia @ 6/1 - I watched the Serbia game and they were average but I didn't see how Wales played against Belgium. Any thoughts? Cheers

Very much held their own until Collins was sent off.

Hmmm maybe a draw would be more realistic. Might just leave it out, cheers MJ

I certainly wouldn't bet anything you're not happy to lose on Wales winning!

Its better to gamble that Belgium will lose away to Serbia and Croatia 😉

Essential to have GKs who play at different days.

i can fit all 3(dyer,pienaar and baines) into one team:

    Ruddy

    baines,cuellar,gorkss

    pienaar,dyer,michu,cazorla,hazard

    tevez rvp

    bench:foster,ridgewell,demel,lambert

or shd i go back just stick with my original plan, downgrade dyer/pienaar and upgrade the defenders?
