The penultimate match of the Gameweek sees Andre Villas-Boas chalk up his first league win as Tottenham manager with a comfortable cruise at the Madejski over Reading. Here’s the Sunday Stock Check…

On the Up

Jermain Defoe
Many had assumed he’d move to the bench this afternoon but Defoe started as the lone forward against the Royals, with Emmanuel Adebayor an unused sub. Having found the net twice, he looks difficult to drop – much to the consternation of Adebayor’s Fantasy owners.

Gareth Bale
Over 184,000 Fantasy Premier League managers had sold on the Welshman after a stuttering start to the campaign but Bale finally came good by bagging his side’s second. With QPR and Villa visiting the Lane in the next three, the suitors are set to come flooding back ahead of the weekend deadline.

The Tottenham Right Flank
The visitors’ pace down the right troubled Ian Harte at left-back for much of the match. Aaron Lennon and Kyle Walker plundered an assist apiece as the veteran was given a bit of a chasing.

Adam Le Fondre
Brought on at half-time as Brian McDermott changed from 4-4-1-1 to 4-4-2, the forward justified his manager’s decision with an assist for Hal Robson-Kanu’s late consolation. While the Reading boss may be eying up a lone striker system ahead of three road trips in the next four, Le Fondre has certainly given McDermott food for thought.

Going Down

Adam Federici
Despite shaking off a knock picked up on international duty, the Reading stopper dropped to the bench to be replaced by Alex McCarthy. With question marks over his game time, Federici is another keeper Fantasy managers will be keen to move on as we reassess our squads in light of the first four Gameweeks.

Clint Dempsey
Villas-Boas claimed both Sandro and Dempsey were jet-lagged before the match but, while the Brazilian was handed 90 minutes, Dempsey managed a brief 13 minute second-half sub appearance. Gylfi Sigurdsson still looks in the driving seat for the role in “the hole” right now, suggesting the US international could be set to lose further Fantasy owners.

Emmanuel Adebayor
A goal for Togo in the midweek internationals hinted at a return to form and fitness but it’s becoming clear that he’ll have to bide his time. Villas-Boas’ decision to stick with Brad Friedel over Hugo Lloris between the posts today was based on the latter’s form in the last game – if he applies the same logic next weekend, Adebayor looks set for another afternoon of bench-warming.

Benoit Assou-Ekotto
The left-back missed the Spurs win with a swollen knee. Reports quote Andre Villas-Boas stating that he may require surgery to clean out the knee which is being troubled by a bone fragment. We await more news but, should that be the case, Assou-Ekotto would apparently face up to a month out.

The Baps come out after EA Sports have finished computing their ratings. Yesterday there were a lot of games so they did not finish before home time. That is why baps did not come out on Saturday, unlike some previous gameweeks where there have been less games on the Saturday. Would have thought baps would be out soon as it cant take long to compute the single match today.

    Just a wee thought.

I see some were saying Bale did not do much today apart from a badly taken goal and that he was still not the good choice to have out of MF's, even in hindsight.

Well tbh I think there was and still is a strong argument to having Bale over Cazorla or Hazard for the short term at least. Before today, he hit the woodwork twice iirc and was creating chances/shots at a good rate. Bale also appears to be coming central allot, bad for Spurs perhaps, but good FPL wise. All the signs were, that he would most likely come good.

Today he had few chances tbh, but got his goal, which is what matters and id have to say, looking at the past 4 games, he may well kick on and deserved a goal. Another goal next week, and the bandwagon will kick off.

So I don't think luck had any part to play with Bale, it was simply logical to back him. (Brought him in last GW instead of Yaya/Hazard).

Disclaimer: If you have Cazorla/Hazard, I would not backtrack now and bring Bale in for one of them, as transfers are so precious and they are very solid long term picks. But if I had a Kagawa/Yaya/Michu and some spare funds, Bale was always a consideration instead of Cazorla/Hazard for the short term with his fixtures.

Like I said, just a wee thought and may not be relevant to allot of readers.
    🙂

Ps. Ba to come good soon, the amount of shots he is getting, fixtures and his class over the last two seasons mean he is a real consideration over the likes of Fletcher/Berba for the 3rd striker spot.

Yaya has consistently brought in close to 150 points the last two seasons. Now if you think he will get more game time further up the pitch this season, then id stick. But id feel safer with a choice that consistently gets into more advanced positions.

For example, at a similar price to Yaya, id fancy Barfa long term. Not saying Yaya ain't great, I just doubt he will get the chances due to his deeper position over the course of a season.

Past seasons have shown that big up top, with dirt cheap defenders works quite well due to the ability to rotate after the first days matches. However, this is a new year and thus things could change. I dont have Ronaldo or Messi personally, but I will almost certaintly be wildcarding GW2 as I am crap at picking teams for european competitions.

I just feel 3 striker spots are too valuable to put torres in there. I like going with 2 expensive strikers and 1 cheaper option, and for me putting Torres in there deprives me of Tevez/RvP.

I am looking at a keeper transfer myself in a couple of weeks to get rid of Fed. But the week I am doing it is my most pressing issue. So, I'd only advocate it if that is the case or if you have 2Fts and don't neither either for something else

Then I stand by my advice, unless you are on wc don't do it. Jussi is a good alternative option. Al-Habsi will do well at home, and as Gink has stated, the man is a beast at saving penos. I would wait until you have spare Ft or are on wc to swap.

Mladen Petric’s absence from the matchday 18 remains unexplained, although we can presume an injury given the list of nine absent players that Jol’s mentioned post-match. We can only await details on Petric ahead of the trip to Wigan next weekend.

Yup. It's Arteta's goal that gave United a sniff in the title race before they cocked it up at Wigan. Arsenal rallied very well to beat Chelsea after going behind. These results, and the famous victory against the Spuds went a long way towards CL qualification.

Chelsea have been pretty average this far, don't you think? Selling form players because a couple of bad fixtures is an idea that more often than not hurts you. I think he might well score against those teams. City have not been amazing either.

I agree. Plus Arsenal beat both City and Chelsea last season. Podolski is the most nailed on forward, and is being fed by Cazorla (the best playmaker in the BPL). Did you see how well he took his goal against Liverpool?
