Having splashed the cash on Eden Hazard and Oscar over the summer, Chelsea’s attacking midfield options looked mouth-watering going into the new season. The prospect of the pair lining up with Juan Mata behind Fernando Torres suggested a change in the Blues’ playing style but until last weekend the trio of number 10 types had failed to feature together from the start in any competition.

While Hazard has made an instant impact this season, Mata and Oscar have been used tentatively by Roberto Di Matteo after a summer of Olympic activity with Spain and Brazil respectively. As they both start to approach full match-fitness, Di Matteo unleashed the pair alongside Hazard for the visit of Stoke on Saturday. A late Ashley Cole finally broke the stubborn Stoke resistance as the Blues earned a narrow 1-0 win and, post-match, the Chelsea manager admitted the trio will require plenty more game time together in order to build up an understanding:

“It’s the first time we have tried it, it certainly needs more work and practice, to tactically integrate them into our system. I thought today it worked very well, but it will take time for them to know each other better. I want them to have mobility and rotation, they are very intelligent at finding free space, we lacked a bit of width at times so we needed our full backs to provide us with that.”

The average position map from the Stoke game (below left) sums up Di Matteo’s words perfectly. Mata (10), Oscar (11), Hazard (17) and Fernando Torres (9, obscured) were all in virtually identical positions when in possession. Interchanging positions, dropping deep and foraging forward, the three attacking midfielders ensured Chelsea had plenty of possession in the final third of the pitch; the hosts had 281 touches in this crucial area compared to 204 in the previous home match against Newcastle (below right).

Indeed, looking at the Magpies showdown, the player positions were a lot more defined. Mata’s (10) tendency to drift inside when on the ball is in direct opposition to his replacement Ramires (7) in that Gameweek 2 match. With Ryan Bertrand (34) offering natural width on the left, the 4-2-3-1 formation is far more apparent. Di Matteo’s remark on the full-backs is also reflected in both maps – Branislav Ivanovic (2) and Ashley Cole (3) were far more prominent in attack in the Stoke game (left), foraging forward and offering balance on the flanks.

Looking at the stats of the attacking midfield three from Saturday, what’s immediately apparent is that they are almost identical for minutes per touch, with Mata judging edging in with one every minute. Despite his substitute withdrawal just after the hour mark, Hazard’s stats still stand up well in comparison to the other two here – indeed, he received only two less passes in the final third than Mata, despite playing almost half an hour less than the Spaniard. There’s no doubt his display was less than sparkling; he made the fewest dribbles and had the least number of goal attempts against Stoke but Hazard’s creativity saw him provide two goalscoring opportunities for team mates; the same number as Oscar, who managed the full game.

Hazard Gameweek 1-4 v Gameweek 5
Hazard’s Fantasy owners may be a little concerned after his home blank last weekend. The Belgian was our Captain Poll favourite for Gameweek 5 but lasted just 62 minutes before making way for Victor Moses as Di Matteo chose to rest the Belgian after the midweek Champions League match with Juventus. A look at his average positions in the first five Gameweeks (below left), however, show that he was actually further forward when on the ball last weekend than in any match so far. It’s also reflected in the stats – although Hazard averaged 87.8 minutes over his first four matches, he was more involved in Chelsea’s play against the Potters.

Hazard GW 562451.11.7301331.11
Hazard GW1-487.8361.31.821.24.55.835.13

He managed 45 touches in the final third on Saturday, bettering his Gameweek 1-4 average of 36, while the Belgian was also on the ball more often – 1.1 minutes per touch to 1.3. Hazard also received 30 passes in the final third against Stoke, well up on his previous average of 21.2. The issue here, though, is that while his overall team involvement improved, his individual stats regressed. A single successful dribble was way down on the 4.5 per game, just three touches in the box versus 5.8, and one shot at goal compared to the average of three – Hazard needs to perhaps rediscover his selfish streak a little more rather than get caught up in intricate passing patterns.

Mata Gameweek 1-4 v Gameweek 5
As the average position map shows (above right), Mata was further forward on Saturday than in any of his previous Gameweeks. His stats are alarmingly better and suggests the Spaniard could well be set for a resurgence in such a system. In his previous matches, Mata played a more withdrawn role, allowing Hazard to wreak havoc but last weekend his role took a significant turn for the better.

MinsTouches Final 3rdMins/ TouchMins/ Pass RcvdPasses Rcvd Final 3rdDribblesPen Area TchsMin/Chance CrtdGoal Attempts
Mata GW 5895511.5322517.83
Mata GW1-478.3231.11.3171358.81.3

In the attacking final third, Mata had 55 touches and received 32 passes against Stoke – his averages across the first four Gameweeks were 23 and 17 respectively. He made double the number of dribbles, found his way into the box more (five touches to three). In terms of creativity, he provided a goalscoring opportunity every 17.8 minutes against the Potters, compared to his previous average of 58.8 minutes and Mata also fired three shots at goal in the Gameweek 5 win – again, a real improvement on his 1.3 average.

It’s an intriguing turn of events that may well bring Mata back onto the Fantasy radar. Both he and Hazard began the Fantasy Premier League season priced at 9.5 but while the Belgian has soared to 10.3, Mata has dropped down to 8.9. The signs are certainly promising – indeed, Mata supplied the assist for Cole’s winner – if Di Matteo gives the trio regular outings together.

Full Backs Gameweek 1-4 v Gameweek 5

Finally, a quick look at the full-back stats. As the average position maps highlight, both Ivanovic (left) and Cole (right) were further forward against Stoke than they managed in any other Gameweek.

The comparison for both players in Gameweek 5 against their Gameweek 1-4 averages clearly indicates how the pair’s potential for attacking points could be further increased. Although both players actually saw less of the ball overall, Ivanovic made 29 touches on the Stoke final third, up on his previous average of 18.2. He also received more passes in this area, by 21 to 12.2, while the right-back produced more crosses and saw more of the ball in the box. The same applies to Cole in all the above categories. More touches (23 to 15) and passes received in the final third (15 to nine), more crosses and touches in the box, with the left-back slotting home the late winner.

Mins/TouchTouches Final 3rdPasses Rcvd Final 3rdPen Area TchsCrosses

Ivanovic GW1-41.218.212.22.83.8
Cole GW 51.5231532
Cole GW1-41.315911.2

It may well be that Di Matteo uses such a system in more straightforward home games as it clearly asks more from the pair from an attacking perspective – such a formation away from home could leave the Blues exposed on the flanks if the pair bomb forward as they did against Stoke. Their contribution will be key to the system, though, and if the Blue can continue the defensive resolve that has already accrued four clean sheets in the first five, Ivanovic and Cole – already first and second in the FPL defender rankings – could well maintain their strong showings as Chelsea continue to evolve.

let me ask you this: who plays whom, between your goalies? who's more likely to keep a clean sheet? go with him. if know you not, i'd check bookies odds, which i think you can find on totalfpl. and from your defendrs, really you are including baines :\ it's probably either demel or ridgewell. i hope that you take this, refer to totalfpl in future, if indeed they give you bookie odds, and only posit a question when you actually need to.

I'd gotten Ba last week for (NOR,rdg). But now he plays (MUN, sun, WBA, liv) after. And as a United fan, I don't think I wanna be watching the game with "Please Ba, get on the scoresheet on my mind" 😆

Irrational I know. Is it a smart move to switch to Berba after the Reading game. Fixtures read (sot, AVL, rdg, EVE). Or is 2 weeks too short to hold Ba for.

    Potential WC team:

    Jussi Bego
    Baines Kompany Gibbs Demel Nelsen
    Cazorla HBA Pienaar Fellaini Nolan
    Tevez Fletcher Ba

Just added in Kompany to ponder over...as he went down in price.

Alternative defence would consist of Olsson/Rafael.

Olsson is good value and Rafael offers attacking threat but will be rotated so is a risk...feel tempted to take a punt for a few weeks though.

Is it a foolish move to go for Kompany considering his high price and the lack of City form at defending?

I think as I'm on the wildcard I've got that pre-season fever where you like to dream of Man City winning 1-0/2-0/3-0 5 times in a row again. It feels like Christmas...I should probably recognise form instead of letting that shiny light blue sheen in my defence hypnotise me.

it all depends on whether or not you can balance out your team. to me if you pick out the heavy 7 of your front 8. you'd be left with only 1 of baines/ivan as a backline. therefore if you haven't got three of Tevez,RVP, (any heavy expensive strikers), i think you should just get a mid priced one so you can use the spare funds to balance out the team.

usually the team is balanced in the sense that an individual can afford three big names at front, but usually people spend their funds for 2 big names, such as RVP or tevez, but now with the rotation in place, their minutes can be in jeopardy...hence why a mid priced forward would not be a bad idea, having 1 expensive striker supported by 2 mid priced ones... this way u can use the funds to strengthen another part of ur taem

i think we're on the same page here. just saying if you haven't got 2 big hitters (RVP Tevez etc). there's no need of getting them both heavy hitters, all you need is one of them and 2 mid priced, Berba Fletcher would do great.

Ha. I must be half woman. I went to bed convinced that I was going to WC. Then woke up thinking i'd be better off taking a hit and getting through until the international break before I WC. Now i don't think i even need to WC at all!!

Yesterday I was thinking that I need to get rid of Federici, Zabaleta, Boyce, Cuellar, Hughes, Marveaux, Torres, Tevez and Graham

However, as the team i am working towards isn't price sensitive (as I will be downgrading torres to berba), non of the moves are particularly urgent.

If I take a hit to do marveaux and torres to fellaini and berba, I am set up nicely for the next two. Then I can decide whether to WC or not. But at the moment, it looks like i can have a good team going forward anyway.

    - Zabeleta. I still think that he will play most games. And maicon has been rubbish. Richards still injured.
    - Boyce/Cuellar/Hughes. Great rotation, so i only have to play one each week, with a nice home fixture. Can cover the cuelllar injury.
    - Tevez. Will play away at fulham for sure. Then I can see what happens in europe before deciding what to do with him
    - Graham. Will keep him for his sweet home fixtures. I can afford to lose money on him.

    What do yous reckon?

But that's the thing. It is 8 that I would get rid of if I was on a WC, but only 4 that I really need to get rid of, and that over a few weeks.

I would suggest that at several stages of the season, everyone will have times when they are more than 8 players away from what their WC would be.

Yeah why not. Graham has to deliver eventually right? Your logic is sound and very reasonable. May all change in two weeks but it seems your are prepared to WC then anyway if it comes to that.

I would even suggest that right now is an awkward time to WC due to the uncertainty of the big hitters, tough fixtures for the big teams and choosing the correct mid priced forward in amongst the numerous candidates.

Yeah. The plan is to get through to the international break, and then take stock.

By then I will have a better idea of the man city striker (and silva) situation, and had a better look at ramirez/lallana. Also, I would quite like to give Boyce a couple more games to prove he should be in my team.

Got 52 so did lambert and fletcher. Got B arfa too

              My team is

              Baines ( c), Ivan, Clark,
Pienar, Nolan, B arfa, Yaya, Haz,
              RVP, Fletcher
              Subs : Lamb, Ridg, Demel

Should i make Lambert play? If so whom do i sub him for?

...save the WC China. 3 transfers would sort your team out nicely for the moment, till int. break. At that stage you'll have clearer ideas and will be able to draft a much better team for the long run to the January WC...Plus you can boost up your team value and freely replace any possibl- injured player during the break.

      Keepers -> Decent combo
Defense -> don't like Nelsen there(Cuellar once fit?)
Mid-> Kagawa MUST go(not a decent ManU coverage).
A)downgrade to a bench warmer to upgrade one of your strikers to RVP
B)if you are confident enough to go w/o RVP maybe Roon later and feel like rotating your front 8, I would do Kag->HBA or Fellaini/Pienaar

I must admit Kagawa is on thin ice for me at the moment but drastic changes probably wont happen for other two wks, at which time I would be able to make a confident conclusion on him... I'm planning to downgrade Mignolet to Begovic next wk to free up a little cash and do a double trade the following wk trashing the weakest links...

Yeah. And he could well again. I just don't like taking a hit for somebody with poor fixtures.

As I said above, I would only consider getting berba, if I am going to rotate him (which I am strongly considering). If you are going to play him every week, with a bench sitting mid, get ba.

yeahh i remember that. well right now i've got marveaux and don't know if i'll be able to shift him out anytime soon. as you can see if cueller is injured i'll have exactly 11 playing players , or 12 if i take the hit so won't be rotating berb anytime soon. ba then? have a feeling he could replicate his pre-acon form from last season... or should i go for fletch/lambert?

I agree, this week looks tricky, like last week. It's always tough when the top teams play each other and you have defenders on your team playing against the strikers of your team. Add in CL and other mid-week games and it gets even tougher.

Really wish the majority of people playing the game wouldn't make their transfers 5, 6 and 7 days before the gameweek has started forcing price fluctuations. Carling cup midweek, champions league next week - there could be significant players starting / being rested that could tell us something tomorrow & wednesday. Not to mention it adds to the blind luck element of hoping your players come through non FPL matches unscathed.

So doing transfers early in the week is all about luck and "blind" decision making? Sure, injuries happen, but most players don't get injured.

Yep. It increases the dependency on luck quite a bit.
If you wait until Thursday or Fridays of midweek game schedules it's at least in your own hands.

It's just sensible, and he is right there is no real need to rush to get a player in.

But the values fluctuating are one of my fav parts of the game, and I have learnt to adapt. Sometimes I make an early transfer, and sometimes on Friday.

I like the team value aspect as well. Its important in that by Christmas you may be able to bring in one more quality player to your team that gives you depth and production. I don't always transfer early but I have no problem doing so, just depends on my team at the time.

I couldn't disagree more. Value is a part of this game, you may not be able to afford the team you've spent time putting together if prices rise on your transfer prospects. Getting a player early and cheaper comes at a risk, sometimes it pays off, sometimes it doesn't. Commit, take the risk, and hope it pays off, nothing wrong with that. If it means more to you to wait, then fine, that's your personal approach. I don't complain when I transfer someone in and then they get injured, I know the risk and accept it. That would give you an advantage over me, which I'm sure you'd be fine with.

What if Ba took that penalty in the weekend (as he should have). He would surely be an even bigger wagon than he is now. He would seem unstoppable especially with Reading coming up and despite United in the next fixture. Tevez will surely look like a nice sell as we all remember the incredible force Ba was this time last year and the rotation concerns about Tevez now that Aguero has returned. Is there a possibility we miss the Ba boat by forgoing him this week and rejecting the idea of getting him in with United as the next game although fully knowing he could score against them as well. Do you all agree that this could very well be a pivotal moment for Ba as a fantasy prospect?

Pardew weren't happy, I think he believes Demba is his pen taker. Players felt sorry for pappis so give him ball... Pardew seething.

And the best options up front cost between 6-8m, Perhaps there is room for one big hitter in the forwards. You are also correct about the lack of midfield big hitters as well, then there is the successful expensive defenders to consider. Its all about points though not using up all your money, it shouldn't matter if 5m is left in the bank if your team is getting the points.

I agree with Ryan. Yes, big hitters are upfront but they all cost 6-8m at the moment(Excl Rvp of course)Fletcher/Ba/Lambert/Berba.

The conventional wisdom on here recently was that HBA was on penalties. I think that came from him forcing himself in taking one a couple weeks ago. At this point, I think it is down to him and Ba. The only reason I could see them letting Cisse take another is to build up his confidence but I don't think they're going to chance that.

Ya, I think you can manage without a wc but I wouldn't recommend it. Anyways, it's too late in the week to wc.

But it's gonna involve a lot of luck - injuries, suspensions, turn of fixtures etc. There are 4 fixed transfers, but you still might wanna do a lot more. You have played in previous years, so you gotta ask yourself what are the chances my team is gonna be worse off than this at any point of the season this year. If you think this is as bad as it. will ever get, that means you gotta wc.

By this Saturday, most of your players would have played so you can decide then.
I gotta also admit, that not having the option to wc, is a huge relief in a way. Otherwise each week you contemplate the same. When people used to write this, I used to laugh thinking how can having a wc add pressure, but it really does

I have compared what my team can look like after the international break, with using the WC, and without.

WITHOUT WC (one hit. 1.1m in bank)
        Begovic, Jaask
        Baines, Zabaleta, Boyce, Cuellar, Hughes
        Bale, Barfa, Santi, Pienaar, Fellaini
        Tevez, Berba, Lambert

        WC
        Begovic, Jaask
        Baines, Gibbs, Olsson, Wilson, Demel
        Bale, Barfa, Santi, Pienaar, Fellaini
        Aguero, Berba, Lambert

        So the main differences.
        Zabaleta v Gibbs (both ok)
Sun/Ful/Wig rotation v WBA/stk/ whm. Both great rotations for one spot. I can bring in Saylor for boyce, to continue the rotation if boyce fails again
Tevez v Aguero. My WC team will probably start with Tevez anyway, and keep an eye on aguero.

Still think that i should WC?

Hi there all...haven't posted in a couple days due to business, but have been keeping close eye on things.

Feeling pretty confident if my starting 11 all roll out sat/sun this weekend...what we think......

    Vorm
    Baines Saylor Demel
    HBA Yaya Pienaar Bale
    Berbatov Fletcher RVP(c)

Looks like a very solid squad. Of coursework much comedown to captain, you think RVP will do well against Spurs? I have him but thinking of captaining Pienaar.

Are you taking the Michael or being serious? Pienaar home to Saints and Rvp home to Spurs and you don't fancy EITHER of them for a goal/assist and a bonus at the very least???

If Pienaar scores that would be a shame 🙂

If RVP doesn't score then he goes Monday morning and in comes Aguero and 2mil in the bank.

Pienaar will prove you wrong all season by the way mate.

Well, there aren't a slew of good captain choices this week. Someone from Newcastle? Liverpool? Everton are a form team right now and Southampton aren't afraid to open it up and play so there could e goals in that game. As far as ManU and Spurs, I think it could go either way. Though I guess historically, ManU does well

Ah who am I kidding, but damn I would love that to happen. First Spurs clean sheet and that too at Old Trafford, now that would be awesome.

Will be watching that match with rapt interest anyways.

I agree Everton player as captain is the most sensible choice this week.

Do I think RVP will do well at home....vs Spurs.....uh.....yes 🙂

Then again. Dembele owners might be salivating since the last time he rolled into O.Trafford he single handedly dominated United. Add Bale, Defoe Sandro and Lennon into the mix and it could be a closer encounter between United and Spurs this time.

I am bringing Baines in finally, and will have double Toffees coverage (already had Pienaar since start ) so I think that, although they will probably concede, Baines at CPT might by my best option.

Yeah, I'm kind of mixed on ManU/Spurs, could be a huge United win or a draw. Don't think Spurs will win though. Baines may be a good pick! Though now I'm looking at maybe going with HBA as captain. It worked ok this week versus some of the favorites but back to back may be pushing it.

    @Ryan - Rooney's return might upset the 'RVP-nailed-on' cart

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/manchester-united/9563570/Wayne-Rooney-in-line-to-make-early-return-for-Manchester-United-in-cup-clash-with-Newcastle-United.html

I definitely see Rooney returning after the International Break. And then with Welbeck and Chico, except RVP to be rotated sometimes.

And even once Rooney returns I will still keep him until he is benched again.

Personally I think he isn't competing with Rooney but rather Rooney is challenging for the spot behind RVP. RVP is competing with other out an out strikers such as Welbeck and Chico, RVP is better than those two so should be nailed on unless he really needs a rest. As he is the current top goal scorer (and assuming he will stay that way for most of the season) I imagine SAF will want to keep the leagues top goal scorer in the starting lineup at least 90% of the time, which is good enough for me.

I think Utd and City with their four strikers each could prove frustrating at crucial times this year with your £10mil+ captain suddenly benched, or worse with a fifteen minute warm up for the next game cameo.

This. Ferguson rested RVP for a game when Rooney wasn't available. There will be major rotation when he is available. Especially after they won 4-0 without either of them. I've said it before, and I will say it again, what is the point in having a super strong squad, if you are not going to use it to keep your best (most fragile) players in peak condition for the big games?

I think you will find such instances are few and far between. You don't spend 25m on a 29 year old striker who was last years top goal scorer without starting him regularly. Chico and Welbeck I imagine, will be used more in the CL fixtures. Still I could be wrong and I dare not try to understand SAF's thinking.

Chicho and Welbeck will be used least against CL teams. If united get 9pts out of 9, then Chico Welbeck will be used in CL. They could also be used against the weaker teams in the PL.

Morning CM, either works imo. Maybe a four point hit. But if you take two or more hits I doubt you'll need the WC yet at all.

It may depend how seriously you are taking any H2H leagues. Frustrating if you lose the two weeks you take hits by a couple of points.

I see many people keep taking hits and save WC, it makes no sense for me. Why dont you use WC early, take the key players at low prices, incresae TV. When DGW coming, you still can plan to get players have DGW, even you also can take hit to get them later.

Its the amusing irony, take hits now to avoid using a WC and having to take hits for a DGW. Whereas equally the alternative is to WC now and take hits for a DGW.

In saying that I think many people are saving there WC for the international break or when there team is 'really bad', the last point is rather hard to judge though I think especially since the GW1 team is probably as bad as it could get.

It depends when the DGW comes. Last seasons DGW was overrated because it came so close to the end of the season, that people only got the benefit of the DGW players (of which you could of got most of by a bit of forward planning). However, if a big DGW was to occur in february, march time, then you could get the benefit of the DGW players PLUS being able to set your team up for an extended period. A WC would then be like gold dust. But is this likely to happen? I'm not sure.

That certainly gives you a lot of flexibility to spend elsewhere.

And sooner/later, you'd be back to RVPs and Rooneys and Agueros and take a few hits just to get one of them in.
