Having splashed the cash on Eden Hazard and Oscar over the summer, Chelsea’s attacking midfield options looked mouth-watering going into the new season. The prospect of the pair lining up with Juan Mata behind Fernando Torres suggested a change in the Blues’ playing style but until last weekend the trio of number 10 types had failed to feature together from the start in any competition.

While Hazard has made an instant impact this season, Mata and Oscar have been used tentatively by Roberto Di Matteo after a summer of Olympic activity with Spain and Brazil respectively. As they both start to approach full match-fitness, Di Matteo unleashed the pair alongside Hazard for the visit of Stoke on Saturday. A late Ashley Cole finally broke the stubborn Stoke resistance as the Blues earned a narrow 1-0 win and, post-match, the Chelsea manager admitted the trio will require plenty more game time together in order to build up an understanding:

“It’s the first time we have tried it, it certainly needs more work and practice, to tactically integrate them into our system. I thought today it worked very well, but it will take time for them to know each other better. I want them to have mobility and rotation, they are very intelligent at finding free space, we lacked a bit of width at times so we needed our full backs to provide us with that.”

The average position map from the Stoke game (below left) sums up Di Matteo’s words perfectly. Mata (10), Oscar (11), Hazard (17) and Fernando Torres (9, obscured) were all in virtually identical positions when in possession. Interchanging positions, dropping deep and foraging forward, the three attacking midfielders ensured Chelsea had plenty of possession in the final third of the pitch; the hosts had 281 touches in this crucial area compared to 204 in the previous home match against Newcastle (below right).

Indeed, looking at the Magpies showdown, the player positions were a lot more defined. Mata’s (10) tendency to drift inside when on the ball is in direct opposition to his replacement Ramires (7) in that Gameweek 2 match. With Ryan Bertrand (34) offering natural width on the left, the 4-2-3-1 formation is far more apparent. Di Matteo’s remark on the full-backs is also reflected in both maps – Branislav Ivanovic (2) and Ashley Cole (3) were far more prominent in attack in the Stoke game (left), foraging forward and offering balance on the flanks.

Looking at the stats of the attacking midfield three from Saturday, what’s immediately apparent is that they are almost identical for minutes per touch, with Mata judging edging in with one every minute. Despite his substitute withdrawal just after the hour mark, Hazard’s stats still stand up well in comparison to the other two here – indeed, he received only two less passes in the final third than Mata, despite playing almost half an hour less than the Spaniard. There’s no doubt his display was less than sparkling; he made the fewest dribbles and had the least number of goal attempts against Stoke but Hazard’s creativity saw him provide two goalscoring opportunities for team mates; the same number as Oscar, who managed the full game.

Hazard Gameweek 1-4 v Gameweek 5
Hazard’s Fantasy owners may be a little concerned after his home blank last weekend. The Belgian was our Captain Poll favourite for Gameweek 5 but lasted just 62 minutes before making way for Victor Moses as Di Matteo chose to rest the Belgian after the midweek Champions League match with Juventus. A look at his average positions in the first five Gameweeks (below left), however, show that he was actually further forward when on the ball last weekend than in any match so far. It’s also reflected in the stats – although Hazard averaged 87.8 minutes over his first four matches, he was more involved in Chelsea’s play against the Potters.

MinsTouches Final 3rdMins/ TouchMins/ Pass RcvdPasses Rcvd Final 3rdDribblesPen Area TchsMin/Chance CrtdGoal Attempts
Hazard GW 562451.11.7301331.11
Hazard GW1-487.8361.31.821.24.55.835.13

He managed 45 touches in the final third on Saturday, bettering his Gameweek 1-4 average of 36, while the Belgian was also on the ball more often – 1.1 minutes per touch to 1.3. Hazard also received 30 passes in the final third against Stoke, well up on his previous average of 21.2. The issue here, though, is that while his overall team involvement improved, his individual stats regressed. A single successful dribble was way down on the 4.5 per game, just three touches in the box versus 5.8, and one shot at goal compared to the average of three – Hazard needs to perhaps rediscover his selfish streak a little more rather than get caught up in intricate passing patterns.

Mata Gameweek 1-4 v Gameweek 5
As the average position map shows (above right), Mata was further forward on Saturday than in any of his previous Gameweeks. His stats are alarmingly better and suggests the Spaniard could well be set for a resurgence in such a system. In his previous matches, Mata played a more withdrawn role, allowing Hazard to wreak havoc but last weekend his role took a significant turn for the better.

MinsTouches Final 3rdMins/ TouchMins/ Pass RcvdPasses Rcvd Final 3rdDribblesPen Area TchsMin/Chance CrtdGoal Attempts
Mata GW 5895511.5322517.83
Mata GW1-478.3231.11.3171358.81.3

In the attacking final third, Mata had 55 touches and received 32 passes against Stoke – his averages across the first four Gameweeks were 23 and 17 respectively. He made double the number of dribbles, found his way into the box more (five touches to three). In terms of creativity, he provided a goalscoring opportunity every 17.8 minutes against the Potters, compared to his previous average of 58.8 minutes and Mata also fired three shots at goal in the Gameweek 5 win – again, a real improvement on his 1.3 average.

It’s an intriguing turn of events that may well bring Mata back onto the Fantasy radar. Both he and Hazard began the Fantasy Premier League season priced at 9.5 but while the Belgian has soared to 10.3, Mata has dropped down to 8.9. The signs are certainly promising – indeed, Mata supplied the assist for Cole’s winner – if Di Matteo gives the trio regular outings together.

Full Backs Gameweek 1-4 v Gameweek 5

Finally, a quick look at the full-back stats. As the average position maps highlight, both Ivanovic (left) and Cole (right) were further forward against Stoke than they managed in any other Gameweek.

The comparison for both players in Gameweek 5 against their Gameweek 1-4 averages clearly indicates how the pair’s potential for attacking points could be further increased. Although both players actually saw less of the ball overall, Ivanovic made 29 touches on the Stoke final third, up on his previous average of 18.2. He also received more passes in this area, by 21 to 12.2, while the right-back produced more crosses and saw more of the ball in the box. The same applies to Cole in all the above categories. More touches (23 to 15) and passes received in the final third (15 to nine), more crosses and touches in the box, with the left-back slotting home the late winner.

Mins/TouchTouches Final 3rdPasses Rcvd Final 3rdPen Area TchsCrosses
Ivanovic GW 51.5292164
Ivanovic GW1-41.218.212.22.83.8
Cole GW 51.5231532
Cole GW1-41.315911.2

It may well be that Di Matteo uses such a system in more straightforward home games as it clearly asks more from the pair from an attacking perspective – such a formation away from home could leave the Blues exposed on the flanks if the pair bomb forward as they did against Stoke. Their contribution will be key to the system, though, and if the Blue can continue the defensive resolve that has already accrued four clean sheets in the first five, Ivanovic and Cole – already first and second in the FPL defender rankings – could well maintain their strong showings as Chelsea continue to evolve.

I use FF Buddy on Andorid. On the free version and it works pretty well. Retrieves the score quickly. The paid version gives you a widget for the homescreen with live scores and live league updating. No point for me as I'm in AU and usually asleep when the games are on.

Can someone give me some tips please:

    Cesar
    Rafael / Gorkss / Mertesacker
    Fellaini / Cazorla / Hazard / Sterling(c)
Fernandez Saez (VC, new addition from Liverpool) / Berba / RvP

    Subs:
    Harper / Guthrie / Riise / Tierney

The next set of fixtures don’t seem too great for my team aside from my Liverpool players and my GK’s. I have $6.5m in my bank, should I make any transfers, and is my captaincy justified?

I see what you're saying but, considering the fixtures my gut feeling is that Sterling will assist or score. Especially when rodgers is playing so tactically attacking and Liverpool is still without a win it seems that this will be the game that will see them rise up the ladder.

If it seems like madness considering the rest of my team, who would you suggest as captain and why?

Hmm yeah I was a bit hesitant when i chose sterling and Suso over RvP. Yeah Suso might play depending on how long Borini is out for and Rodgers seems willing to play him too. He came on half time for Borini last game.

Use my transfer or save it? (1 free transfer, 4.0m in the BANK):

    Begovic(SWA)

    Cazorla(CHE) Fellaini(SOT) Michu(sto) Sterling(nor)

Was seriously considering Jenkinson/Cuellar > G.Johnson until Liverpool's defence began to fall apart over the last couple of days. Not sure it's a viable option any longer. Anything else you can see worth changing or should i just give Jenkinson a game and save my transfer?

Nice team to have 4.0m in the bank for. I guess that's from having Sterling + Maloney.

Personally I'd keep it, gives you another week to assess where to spend your millions. It looks like a high-scoring team this week. Sagna won't be rushed - at all - with Jenkinson looking solid. He'll be there for the next few - and you never know - his league 1 tekkers might grab him an assist eventually.

I need a big hitting midfielder with good fixtures, but little chance of rotation. I've got bale and santi. Thinking silva, if Nasri is out. But he is as likely to be rotated as the strikers isn't he? Gerrard? How attacking is he -playing?

Innitially I figured Silva will be nailed on for every game as a result of the Nasri injury but since there are crucial CL games coming up I wouldn't be surprised if he is rested for the odd game and Sinclair comes on to play LW. Even if Silva predominantly plays centrally behind the striker it wouldn't surprise me to see Yaya in that position or simply two strikers such as Tevez or Aguero. These issues coupled with form means for me at least, Silva should be avoided for now.

Really i mean expensive. I'm toying with the idea of forgoing manchester strikers completely (controversial I know!!), so I would have up to 10m left for a midfielder.

Or I could just use some of the cash to upgrade gibbs to big verm, and get yaya, as I really want man city coverage for their nice run of fixtures.

There is no rule to say you should use as much money as possible on your team. If you have money to burn in midfield but there is no adequate big hitting midfielder's then there is nothing wrong with leaving 4 or 5 million in the bank for a rainy day.

The willingness to ignore history and chase last week's points on here is amazing. David Silva has scored 144 and 184 FF points the last 2 years. Yes, he had a summer of football and Mancini has eased him back. Is there any question he will return to form soon ? Really ? If you are looking to go with midpriced forwards then Silva is an ideal pickup; he will be involved in nearly everything good that happens with the highest scoring team in the Prem.

I don't think anyone will disagree with you that Silva will perform and do well as he does every year. However as the old adage goes, better to be one week late then to be too early. Also people have the right to be wary when it comes to rotation at this stage as well. Perhaps the fixtures around next CL game will clear that up and we will have a better idea of Mancini's thinking.

Fair point. I'm just blown away by the number of folks who bandwagon prices through the roof while ignoring this game is a marathon, not a sprint. Hazard price rise case in point when you know keeping faith with Mata will probably result in more points by year end.

But that is also not how it works. The idea of season keepers is long gone, it is better to pick players who are on form and getting points consistently for a particular period of time. Hazard over Mata was a completely justified bandwagon in that respect. However your point does ring true when players who performed well have one off week then people sell, that is indeed too much of a kneejerk, likewise for those that have one good week.

conversely, the willingness some have to discount any and all indicative performances;both individually and collectively, and use historical precedence as some kind of rule of thumb up to which future performances should expect to measure, is equally, if not laughably simplistic. buy folk when they they give you reason to buy em. easy as. simply so

Gerrard takes set pieces and is quite an attacking midfielder (as evidenced by his goal a few days ago). This is my midfield selection and all are attacking midfielders:

      Hazard / Cazorla / Fellaini / Sterling / Guthrie(sub)

I personally enjoy Sterling more than the others for a few reasons
      1) Brendan Rodgers is playing him out front in his 4-3-3 formation so he's likely to score or assist
      2) He's $4.6m, 17 years old, but has started all of his last 3 or 4 games and has played 90 minutes for most
      3) Liverpool has been in terrible form lately, but despite this he's still got an assist. Once they pick up their game he will be crazy.

What I like about Sterling also is that he makes a great bench filler or rotating player. And I think there is a good chance his price will steadfastly increase once all the Liverpool fans pick him up. I think one big performance from him could really launch this bandwagon into the stratosphere.

predictable but Fellaini is shooting, heading, assisting and scoring and he is gonna keep doing it
Also - yaya is dominating and having a ping at goal whenever there is space outside the box
Gotta go with FORM and just watching those two is evidence enough that they are the real deal
Fellaini more so though...I don't subscribe to the "he'll be dropped deeper etc etc"...that was last year's fellaini

Would you play Demel (Away @qpr) or Rangel (away @stoke)?

Stat wise, Rangel is more attacking potential. Swansea will get Chico back next PL game and should be better at their DF..

Btw, any interesting DF at 5.1m? Is S.Taylor still a good attacking choice?

Haz for NOR is looking dubious though - seems like Hazard is showy, with little substance (refer the early comments about his dubious assists), and now has considerable rotation risk. Seems like che, mun and mci all have too many great midfield options - very irritating for FPL!

Pienaar is cheaper and is likely to play an attacking role all season. This week against a defense which has shown no ability to deal with good attacking play? Maybe Fellaini. Depends on your perspective - short term or long term. Personally, I am looking at Pienaar for a hit but also would keep him long term.

He might rise today at 96%
Fellaini did yesterday but I think more way people were shipping him in
You would expect cole to only rise .1 really
If you don't get him now and he does rise today, I wouldn't lose sleep over it
Could be way less complicated to risk the wait and if 600 more punters have shipped him in tomorrow, he might be worth a sniff
That said, I assume you don't ACTUALLY want him and you can't always get EVERY riser with yr wildcard, especially the pricey ones

momentum looks to have slowed on fiso... understand you need doubles to lock in gains due to halfing at sale. The most you can make is about 1m on a WC, and realistically much less than that given the likelihood of multiple rises and the cap - feels like an incremental tactical gain, rather than a strategic boost, but every bit helps, right.

    Spot the biggest hole

    Vorm
    Ivanovic, Olsson, Demel
    Bale, Cazorla, Yaya, Pienaar
    Torres, Tevez, Petric

    Federici, Michu, Hangeland, Clyne

    0.9m in bank

Did an FT to get Pienaar for Dyer. I concede Petric/Michu for this GW, I know conceding a spot is not really a tactic, but haven't seen any worthwhile hit to make. (Granted, people would most likely suggest Yaya > Fellaini and/or Ivanovic > Baines, no?)

Petric out should be your priority at this stage. Plenty of good strikers to choose from in the 6-8m bracket. If you don't want to take a hit start Michu over Petric this week. Simply because he is guaranteed to start whereas Petric could easily be on the bench.

Exactly, Imma do Petric to Lambert but prefer to do it next week. (Lambert's probably fixture proof, but I don't think a visit to Goodison Park would worth a hit and GW7 onwards looks better for Soton.)

I expect him to play finally, or sit the entire match on the bench to let Michu in. Although since it's MCI, kinda likely to come off from the bench -__-

Boy, I'd play Nelsen at home over Demel. QPR look like getting their shit together and you could see them getting a CS at home. West Ham have not exactly been prolific. I am big on H/A and I'd probably play Gorkss over Demel too.

West Ham are not TOT in attack. QPR conceded an own goal and Defoe's goal was a bit of luck.

I'm sticking with RVP for now. They blasted Spurs last year.

Made some rough plans for the next few weeks, not sure which is the best option though…
Opinions please? I'm stuck, hahaha 🙂
Already got Foster in goal so maybe double West Brom isn't the best choice...
Liking the Gunners defence as well!

    Post-WC team:

    Bego-Foster
    Baines-Saylor-Gallas-Hughes-Demel
    Hazard-Bale-Barfa-Pienaar-Dyer
    Podolski-Tevez-Ba

Want to bring in Fellaini(C) for Dyer, need to free up 0.9:

    A) Dyer+Gallas-> Fellaini+Nelsen
    B)Tevez+Dyer->Fellaini+Fletcher
    C) Any other viable transfer

if you really really need fellaini then i'd say dyer to him and either hazard or gallas to someone. now i have no idea as to gallas' spot in the team but i'ma assume he's fairly solid. hazard is eminently sacrificable so, if you are uncomfortable with the backline apres-gallas, i'd shoot hazard

    Captain Fellaini or RVP?
Man Utd always play well vs Spurs and opposite Spurs always crash vs ManU, but Fellaini form very good

Good question. I was actually thinking of putting the armband on Pienaar, as I don't have Fellaini.
