Spurs win at Old Trafford for the first time since 1989 as Andre Villas-Boas’ side triumph in the game of the season so far. Gareth Bale is the main protagonist for the Londoners, as United’s defensive frailties are exposed yet again:

Going Up

Gareth Bale
In a Gameweek where many of the popular midfield picks failed to produce the goods, the Welshman continued his return to form with a goal and pair of assists at Old Trafford. With a home clash against Villa up next, Bale can expect to pick up plenty of interest over the next few days.

Jan Vertonghen
Having found his eye for goal in the midweek Capital One Cup win at Carlisle, Vertonghen notched his first league goal of the campaign as Andre Villas-Boas’ side won for the third Gameweek in a row. With (AVL, sot, WIG) amongst his next four fixtures, the potential for point looks good for the Belgian at both ends of the pitch.

Clint Dempsey
Picked ahead of Gylfi Sigurdsson for the role in “the hole”, the US international vindicated his manager’s decision with his first goal of the season. Dempsey – who has a mere 2% ownership in FPL – could be a real differential pick over the next few games, with a starting berth in the Spurs XI now seemingly assured.

Wayne Rooney
Sent on for Ryan Giggs after the break, Rooney was forced to take up a wider position, with Shinji Kagawa keeping the role behind Robin Van Persie. He made an immediate impact, setting up Nani for United’s first, and with a free-kick hitting the woodwork, he’s offering a real alternative to the Dutchman up top as we look to freshen up our Fantasy squads.

Going Down

United Defence
Once again, the Red Devils failed to keep out their opponents at the back. Sir Alex Ferguson’s side have conceded in all but one of their six fixtures so far – with trips to Newcastle and Chelsea in the next four, in addition to a home clash against Arsenal, sales of their defenders look likely to pick up.

Robin Van Persie
Normally, an assist isn’t too bad for a day’s work. The Dutchman has still managed to produce attacking returns in all of his starts this term but with the likes of Nikica Jelavic, Luis Suarez and Demba Ba all racking up the goals earlier today, and with Rooney now back for United, many may be tempted to look for alternatives to the 13.5 priced Dutchman.

How sure are we that Sagna will walk back into the team after his injury after Jenkinson has been part of this new defensive solidity? Kos took over Mertesacker today and they let two goals in which may make them rethink that and apply similar logic. Jenkinson has been playing well too from what I've read (not something I though I would have ever said last season). The same can be said for Friedel. I wouldn't transfer out immediately is what I'm trying to say.

As soon as Sagna is back Jenks is no longer worth having...Sagna is too good to not get back in the team...but it should be ok for a few more weeks...I'd immediately bank the money you made on Jenks though once he's back. There's no way you keep him once he's a risk for rotation.

Yeah what I'm saying is of course he will then be at risk for rotation, just not to act straight away as it will not be an urgent transfer, as like Zabaleta he will still get minutes.

Once Sagna is back he will be the right back for the rest of the season, Wenger's already proven he picks his best team by dropping Mertesacker...who didn't really deserve to be dropped. Sagna is amazing and Jenks is just a youngster.

Will he think it was a mistake defensively to drop Mertesacker, and if so will he think to reinstal him and then apply this logic to not immediately dropping Jenkinson, is my question.

Boas dropped Bale to LB last week and realised it was a mistake, managers are not that stubborn.

The no.1 overall leader in FPL...his strikers scored 7 goals and 2 assists in total...The rest of his team basically did nothing...that's all you need really in this game.

I disagree. This season so far has been brilliant for strikers scoring goal, past seasons have not been as safe, whereas this season so far has been more hit and miss for midfielders, whereas past seasons have been alot more safe e.g. Lampard, Gerrard, Ronaldo, Fabregas, Adam.

But, currently, or past few gameweeks (so as to discount Hazard and Michu initial returns) you are correct. It seems very important to have 3 consistent strikers at the moment as so many are available.

I was just jesting really, it's true though if your strikers deliver the goods like that you don't need to worry much about the rest. I agree though in past seasons there was more reliance on midfielders...I've still got it in my head that Midfielders are meant to chip in with goals but it looks like this season so far there are few figures to compete with the likes of Lamps/Gerrard/Ronaldo for pure goalscoring ability...maybe Bale... 😕

Same as Everton though. I would recommend Suarez for 2 reasons:

              1) Unlike Everton, there's really only Suarez and Gerrard (maybe Sahin) who have the ability to score. Therefore your chance of choosing someone who will score is 50%.

              2) Suarez earned the most points this week so everyone will jump on the bandwagon. Get him now so that you can earn some cash 🙂

I have found that many times the best thing to do is to hold when you have big name players. That being said, if your big name player is a risk of rotation, that needs to be addressed immediately. Guthrie to Ramirez sounds good, but it can wait. Sort out your money players first, then take care of the subs. My strategy as of now is to have the main players, or as many as possible of the top teams. For me that means rvp, augero, Suarez, cazorla, hazard, barfa. My budget mid is sterling and michu, who I'm considering changing after these next two weeks. My only team not covered is tottenham, but I intend to switch between Suarez and adebayor as fixtures and form dictate, or even downgrading hazard to Oscar if he can build some form and then upgrade michu to bale. All with time, but my idea is to have a captain option from all top 6 or 7 teams. I wouldn't worry about your ranking as of now. Just make solid moves for guaranteed safe average points and then fill in around that. Players like Ramirez may pop up every few weeks, but if you are constantly changing your top players, you will not have the luxury of planning your transfers for those other team spots. After all this bullshit, it all comes down to get rid of tevez, but not for someone that you will personally want to rid tomorrow, but for a long period keeper. I went for augero because I needed man city captain cover and nobody else fits that requirement.

And to be quite honest, your team looks pretty good. I would say zaba, and tevez are priorities. Zaba to Gibbs could be a season keeper option. Very involved in arsenal high speed offense, and bigger cs potential than other seasons

          Thanks mate!
Yeah! I would love Gibbs! Being a Gooner myself I've been looking at our defense for a while!
I was looking at this but Nolan's price went up..
          Zabaleta –> Mertersacker
          Guthrie –> Nolan

Now with Merter being a risk, I think Gibbs is the way to go.
Or, I could wait and bring in Sagna but he's now a rotation risk as Jenkinson is doing great IMO!
Arsenal defense would also be good as I already have Foster and McAuley would be too risky..

Aguero played wide for City, bit risker isn't it?
Personally I would like to bring in Suarez and as you said Ramirez can wait.
Suarez could be a good long period keeper as he's practically the only goalscorer for Liverpool.
I do have 1.0 in the bank but I may just hold onto it untill a replacement for someone is needed...

Could be risky, but as far as city is concerned, I believe he's the least of th risks, and can count on 20 plus goals from him. But at end of day, it's down to you and who you can feel comfortable with for a good period of time. I personally think Suarez is one of tops in he league, and he personally killed my season last year. But once he gets on target, like today, with the chances he gets, he can be a 30 goal per season player.

I like to think of city as fixture proof as I expect them to score every game, and don't have any of their defenders. Also, as they will win most games, their goalscorers should bank most bonus points. But as fixture proof as they are, they are not Mancini proof!

Yes.... Did not expect Suarez, or Liverpool, to get anything away at Norwich. Now I'm in a bit of a pickle. Tevez and Graham have decent fixtures coming up, but I really want Suarez or Jellyfish (as I don't have Fellatio/Peanut)...

did you read my comment? I said something like "I wouldn't get Jelavic for a hit if you have Fellaini and Pienaar" - I'd have probably done it myself if I didn't have 2 Toffees already.
Tevez and Graham do have good fixtures, but is it time to jump on the form players who also have relatively good fixtures (Suarez, Jelavic, Ba, Lambert)? Hmm.

I know it's only 6 GW's in but I'm starting to think there are only a few teams that are actually bothered keeping clean sheets. I think it's an important thing to keep in mind as it's as much to do with the mentality of the team as anything else.

Stoke = A good bet as they are defensive in nature, they like to out-strengthen teams and put up a wall and to an extent play rather ugly football for the sake of grinding out results.

Sunderland = MON is a true believer in getting the most out of a team even if they're lacking in certain areas. Sunderland have shown so far that if their striker up top can nick a goal they're more than happy to hang on to that one goal lead.

West Brom = one of the best defences in the league, you get the sense that Steve Clarke knows how to play the right kind of defensive football to earn results. Mulumbu and Yacob in the middle only enhances their chances of CSs.

West Ham = It's no shock they've got a few CS's under their belts imo. Allardyce is a back to basics manager, he will fully intend on continuing this style to ensure safety as soon as possible. Their defence probably isn't that great but it's the way they approach games that works to their advantage.

Chelsea = Incredibly experienced in Defence and despite their attacking assets, the core of the team is the stronghold at the back and that includes Cech who is on great form as usual. They have shown they will deliberately kill off games once they get leads and play mostly 'Not to lose'. At least that's what I sense from RDM's tactics. It won him the Champions league so why change anything!

Lots of the top teams at the moment seem perfectly willing to outscore opponents if needs be. I think this inherent confidence at times breeds incompetence but it's interesting to analyse the underlying factors behind why certain teams are conceding more and others less.

    Thanks

To add to this, I believe arsenal have shown a growing discipline in the back. Today was a memory of the mistakes of yesteryear, but of the top teams in the league they look the most solid defensively.

Other than Chelsea, the top teams still look to be sorting out their back lines. Once they settle in, they will be difficult to break down.

I think teams like Arsenal will inevitably keep Clean sheets but not for the same reasons a team like Stoke will. For example, Arsenal had 3 clean sheets in a row to start the season, while they of course must have defended well, they played Sunderland at home (who parked the bus) and Stoke away (who similarly parked the bus) The clean sheets were not so much down to Arsenal's magnificent resolve at the back but rather the fearful/defensive tactics employed by the opposition team on each occasion. Top teams keep more clean sheets mainly because they just aren't threatened enough because of negative tactics. So the two 0-0's that Arsenal started out with were deemed poor results for them but magnificent for Sunderland/Stoke because their tactics won out.

Normally I would agree, but this season seems different. Arsenal would give up goals to every team out there, especially from set pieces. Stoke had many, and yet never looked dangerous. Arsenals marking has improved exponentially. This game vs Chelsea, koscielny made some bad mistakes reminding me of their seasons gone by. Why winger would pull mertesacker this game after their defensive start is beyond me, but they are definitely not allowing as many chances. Chelsea had 3 and scored 2, and all because of koscielnys errors.

I would get rid of Yaya immediately...he is over-priced and not going to get more than 6/7/8 goals a season imo unless he's permanently put in an attacking position. I don't understand having him when there is Silva, Nasri, Tevez, Dzeko, Aguero, Balotelli all there to score goals...he's just a Man City-lite option imo. Only reason he's bought by anyone is because he's nailed on and people are afraid of no city...sorry if this sounds harsh! I will gladly eat humble pie if he gets 10-15 goals this year.

No, Kagawa will score many goals this season imo. He is there to be play as the attacking midfielder behind the striker/strikers. His job is to assist and score as many as possible so I think he's going to be way better value than Yaya.

I got him because I though that after the two previous seasons he has shown that he is their most important player, wanted a city player at the start and wasn't confident with Nasri or Silva at the time. He paid me back with a goal a week, and then Garcia came and finally, I thought maybe with him perhaps being allowed to bomb forward alot more it would help, but no returns so far. He is easily capabale of 10 goals if he plays like he plays the attacking football he is capable of consistently.

    Afternoon all

How about this for a Wild Card team:

    Foster Begovic

    Rafael Baines Gorkss Nelsen Demel

    Bale Cazorla Silva Sterling Puncheon

    RVP Suarez Ba

Nowt in the bank. Obviously the 3 cheapies at the back are poor but only one will play every week. Sterling and Puncheon rotate nicely until the Christmas wild card. I know there are doubts about Puncheon but he's a handy player and you have to drop someone. Hopefully the front seven have enough oomph to make up the difference....

    Yay or nay?

Wouldn't worry about 3 cheapies being poor - defence all round seems shocking his season bar Chelsea who have some tough fixtures coming up and also no Terry for a month.

Yes, we seem to be paying for goals this year instead of clean sheets. It's been a trend for while but this year it's even more marked than usual. I guess it's because every team now has technically gifted players than can score against anyone, which didn't use to be the case.

Id dump RVP on WC.. allows for a much more balanced team. Doesnt even justify his value atm..

RVP-> Jelly and you'll be able to fit in Barfa/Yaya in mid and upgrade that garbage you call a back line 😉 😀

You pick other players that represent value to be able to afford the likes of RVP, Aguero etc..they won't score 2 goals a game but you can captain them every week and they will more often then not deliver the points.

Justifying his price in terms of value isn't necessarily a necessity for RVP, if you're going to have him and captain him most weeks then he's worth twice what he gets and if you captained him those times (excluding Wigan) He's got 5 goals and and an assist. Still pretty reliable.

Don't fancy Sterling and Puncheon, Puncheon isn't even nailed on, Sterling is also 17 and it's not a guarantee he will play EVERY week just yet. Although he looks good so far.

It looks like a good core to the team you have there...maybe you'd have to sacrifice one of the big 3 mids for 2 more average-priced mids like Michu/Fellaini/Ramirez/Pienaar/HBA etc

          Cheers guys

I already have HBA and Pienaar but I'd much rather have Fellaini, Ba and a City midfielder. Silva seems the only one likely to play every week but he's expensive....if I knew he'd average 5 points a week I'd get him immediately. Great fixtures for City, though...

I like B and C but if I had to choose one, B. reasons being:

      1) Unlike Everton, there’s really only Suarez and Gerrard (maybe Sahin) who have the ability to score. Therefore your chance of choosing someone who will score is 50%.

      2) Suarez earned the most points this week so everyone will jump on the bandwagon. Get him now so that you can earn some cash

Now your turn then. Why did you leave Rafael on your bench last week (missing out on his 11 points) while playing Gorkss away to WBA instead? And you also played a Fulham defender in an away game as well. 🙄

Hey guys, I know my decision was wrong and I wasn't trying to vindicate myself either.

I benched Rafael as I clearly did not know he would score beforehand. That is not something that's obvious. I benched him because he was playing away to Liverpool and obviously would concede. Most people thought United would concede by 2 so that would've been 2-1pts.

Gorkss was played because they were playing against West Brom. They are a great defensive team, but not necessarily in attack. Most people predicted a 0-0 clean sheet draw.

As for Riise. Yes, Fulham does suck playing away but it was against Wigan. Riise also takes set pieces and is attacking minded. There was actually a decent chance of a CS with a possibility of attacking returns.

Ag to Suso to Suarez. If you've read the comments on this page you would know that I've regretted doing so. Despite this, I still earned all of the -8pts back through my Suarez captaincy.

                  yes. Biggest mistake this year
I've never rated Hazard (also Michu), didnt get him at start of season. Still didnt rate him when he ran riot in the first 3 GW.Always said bad things about him but I couldnt keep my pride when most of people here praised him, and his ownership rose like rocket, I used WC to get him in.

I know everybody loves Foster + Bego, but I'll need 0.6m to make the switch, and I don't see where I can get it. I need that money.

As for Puncheon, I'll gladly swap him out, but only for a 4.4m playing mid. I can't see a better alternative, and I need a bench sitter.

Do you want a good short term keeper for a very cheap price tag? Mannone for 4.5m. Szezseny won't be back for quite a few weeks

Honestly, I held off on a WC for a while already. The fixtures are also swinging this week.

The back to back home fixtures are coming in for Liverpool, Tottenham and Swansea. Prime chance to make up points. I need Bale and Suarez, and there was no way for me to get them without multiple hits.

So you Wildcarded because of the next two weeks? Bale is at home to Chelsea in one of those weeks.. Spurs have good fixtures for 4 weeks and then they turn hard.
Surely Tevez/Hazard > Bale/Suarez could have been an easy 4 point hit for you, if you wanted them so bad?

Too me, it seems way too short sighted, over the next 6 weeks Spurs/Liverpool/Swansea's fixtures really aren't that great. I have Bale and will probably get in Suarez but WC seems excessive, your team was fine. Oh well, too late now!

I could have done that, but I'd still be left with:

Graham, Guthrie, Cuellar and Federici with no replacement.

I've wanted to offload Graham for 2 weeks, and I've just had to keep him because I've had more urgent transfers to make.

In my mind, it was a tossup between GW 7 and GW 9. I saw reasonable proof this week that Tottenham and Liverpool have the form to capitalise on their fixtures. So I took the plunge.
