We sign off on Gameweek 7 by name checking Arsenal’s Spanish schemer, looking at the potentially problematic route into United’s first XI and the upturn in defensive solidity by many of the big guns…

The Player

Arsenal’s win at West Ham, played out in front of the tv cameras on Saturday evening, afforded Fantasy managers the opportunity to run the rule over the Gunners’ assets ahead of a trip to Norwich next time out. While Arsene Wenger’s side impressed by coming back from a one-goal deficit to end the hosts unbeaten home run, there was little doubt as to the game’s chief protagonist.

Dictating the visitors’ play from his role in “the hole”, Santi Cazorla was simply a class apart. Offering a constant goal threat and providing opportunities aplenty for his team mates, the little Spaniard’s performance backed up our own ICT Index, where he leads the way after the first seven Gameweeks of the season.

After a couple of opening blank Gameweeks, the summer signing from Malaga is turning into one of the most consistent Fantasy performers around right now. Cazorla has now scored or assisted in four of his last five appearances, averaging seven FPL points per game from the Gameweek 3 trip to Liverpool onwards, while in the Sky Sports game, he has already received three Man of the Match awards.

While many FPL managers had considered Gervinho as an Arsenal midfield alternative due to his cheaper price and out of position role as a lone frontmen, the Ivorian’s shift to the flank last weekend saw his stock take a significant dip. Gervinho cut a frustrated figure out wide, as Olivier Giroud took the opportunity to notch his first league goal for the Gunners – Cazorla’s position as the main instigator of the Gunners’ attacking moves is nailed-on, by comparison.

With a trip to Norwich and a couple of home games against QPR and Fulham in the next four, the bandwagon is already picking up speed. Budgets are being juggled, squads reassembled, as Fantasy managers attempt to find space in our five-man midfields for a player who is starting to look irresistible for many.

The Team

A 3-0 win at Newcastle produced United’s first away clean sheet of the season, with Jonny Evans, Patrice Evra and Tom Cleverley the goalscorers. While that’s all good and well for Sir Alex Ferguson, from a Fantasy perspective, the Red Devils are proving to be a real headache right now. United, clearly, have plenty of Fantasy potential – top scorers with 17 goals under their belt already, they have scored two or more times per game since the 1-0 opening defeat at Everton.

In midfield, Shinji Kagawa was subbed off midway through the second-half yet again – the fifth time in a row this has happened – while Nani failed to make the squad entirely. Antonio Valencia could, perhaps, offer us an alternative – back in the squad despite his manager ruling him out earlier in the week, he climbed off the bench at the Sports Direct Arena and comes back into contention, having provided assists in his last two starts.

Wayne Rooney’s recent to the starting XI for the first time since Gameweek 1 also muddied the Fantasy waters around Old Trafford way. Starting alongside Robin Van Persie up top for the first time in the league, he stole the limelight with a pair of assists and maximum bonus; a worrying sign for the Dutchman’s owners, with sales of the former Arsenal skipper beginning to pick up after a single goal in the last four Gameweeks. Faith in Van Persie will surely remain strong but with Rooney coming in at 11.7 in FPL and Van Persie price at 13.5, the option to free up budget and strengthen elsewhere is suddenly becoming that little bit more tempting.

The Talking Point

Without a single clean sheet between them in the opening six Gameweeks, City, Liverpool and Spurs all finally produced the goods last weekend. Investment at the back has mainly been restricted to Leighton Baines and the nailed-on Chelsea contingent, with United’s Rafael perhaps staking a case for inclusion, too, but, as the season begins to finally settle down, are we seeing a resurgence in defensive solidity from the main protagonists at last?

With United also nullifying Newcastle’s threat on Sunday afternoon, this means that four of last season’s top six defences (in terms of goals conceded) all produced the goods. With Chelsea on the verge of a tricky run of fixtures, Roberto Di Matteo’s side could be hard pushed to maintain a record that has seen them concede a mere four goals thus far – Branislav Ivanovic owners will surely hold firm but last weekend’s results hint that the Serbian may have a fight on his hands to remain at the top of the FPL defenders rankings if the pattern continues.

Surprisingly, defenders have been the top scoring FPL players in five of the first seven Gameweeks of the 2012/12 campaign. Ivanovic, Angel Rangel, Alexander Buttner, Ashley Cole and Aleksandar Kolarov have shown that the men at the back are more than capable of racking up significant scores, with only two forwards – Carlos Tevez and Luis Suarez breaking this somewhat unexpected run. With a new-found resilience possibly on the cards for a handful of new contenders, investment at the back could become a priority for many over the next fortnight as we begin to reassess our squads and plan for the upcoming Gameweeks.

    Foster Begovic
    Baines Jenkinson Saylor Cuellar Demel
    Hazard Cazorla Pienaar Michu Sterling
    RVP Tevez Lambert
    2FTs, 0.0 in bank

    A. Hazard > Bale; keep Tevez.....Allows Lambert > Berbs, Michu > Ramirez if needs be.
    B. Hazard > Silva/Bale; Tevez > Berbs.....Allows Michu > Mata.
    C. Anything else?

I quite fancy having Berbatov in the long run; currently leaning towards A but not sure yet. I should also have enough funds for Jenkinson to Sagna with both options.

Almost cracking on getting Cazorla in now. Having watched him every game so far as a Gooner, I perhaps set him unfairly high expectations and thought he wasn't meeting them (especially with shot accuracy) but I'm realizing that he stands out amongst big mids as whole.

This is why I was hesitant. His goal involvement is fairly average - 30.8% over all matches. Seems pretty constant. Steady performer, not as explosive as I might have hoped. It looks like tehcnically he's the best cover, but not dominant cover.

But will there ever be dominant cover for Arsenal(this season) Giroud does not look good enough to start every game. So many players on the flank so loads of rotation. And Poldi just not explosive. Carz maybe the best option.

But this is my problem, the big question is whether he is the best relative to other similarly-priced midfielders, not relative to all Arsenal attackers. It's very borderline for me - someone who gets some involvement in 30% of all Arsenal goals is rather borderline, particularly as the jury's still out on whether Arsenal will be banging them in City/United style.

I mean, for comparison, Hazard actually has goal involvement of 42.9% compared to Cazorla's 30.8%. In an attack that is scoring more. And we all seem pretty keen to sell him.

That is a good % for Haz but if you look at who chelsea have faced than besides Arsenal they have had no tough fixtures. I expect the goals to dry up now that the fixture list gets more difficult. I will keep Haz for 1 more but will sell for Bale or Silva for GW9.
Arsenal on the other hand have a nice run and I can see 5ppg for Caz at least- he is not C material but a steady points producer. Like Silva IMO.

It's what one awful day of FPL does to the mind! I do say "almost cracking on Cazorla" - see above, his involvement isn't as high as I hoped and that's why I haven't sealed the deal.

I remember saying to Corrigan that involvement over GWs 5-7 would decide whether I get him - and he's been completely borderline! What a tease!

I'd do Gerrard to Caz. I'd rather have Berba over Giroud, Gerrard plays to deep to be the points monster he once was. Plus as good as his passing is, Liverpool lack anyone to actually stick the chances he may create away.

I'd prefer to have Caz, but agree you can't let go of Gerrard just yet; Giroud could be ready to explode.

On your Silva point from prior page, an article on here analysing stats for City had Silva second only to Aguero in his potential to score big. It left me with the impression that he was on the verge of being seriously involved in the points if he kept playing regularly. Thoughts on this?

Really want him to be my City player, but WR is right: gotta see something, although a decent performance in GW 8 might be enough to persuade me to get him for GW9 (I don't need my arm twisted).

He has never been a really big single gw point scorer.. has had a consistency that is lacking this year but has never 'exploded' like Bale, Lampard or Gerrard. Would need to do a lot more for me to consider at the price

Ok, so all things considered I've decided I'm just gonna keep Adam Johnson. Since I am dumping Hazard to Cazorla taking AJ out requires a -4. I don't see any mids long term that are worth taking the hit for. Nolan has good fixtures next 2 GWs then it turns awful. Lennon will not score points as often as I'd want for 7 million. Although AJ has not either, I remain convinced that as he settles properly (remember he lost 2 weeks through injury) and he and Sunderland adapt fully to each other, the points will come for him.

Plus he's a huge differential and has an impending DGW.

This DGW could be almost 2 months away. Dont use that as an excuse to keep him, if you have faith he will do well until then it is a different matter. Davies is fine, no evidence of him losing his place yet and he can just sit on bench.

If you actually look at his run of fixtures it's not actually that bad.

NEW, sto, AVL, eve, ful, WBA, QPR, nor, CHE, mnu, SOT

a few tricky away games, plus Chelsea at home, but overall not bad and there is a DGW due., which I hope falls in lime to make either AVL, RDG or QPR, RDG, or SOT, RDG

Evening all, my team is below and I have 2FT and no cash in the bank...Sorry for the repost

      Jassi / Foster
      Baines / McAuley / Jenkinson / Bertrand / Demel
      Hazard / Cazorla / Michu / Pienaar / Kaca
      RVP / Tevez / Berba

I need to get rid of Bertrand. Not getting much game time.

Could possibly do (both 4pt hits ): Bertrand - Rafael
      Hazard - Bale
      Tevez - Ba

      or

      Bertrand - Rafael
      Hazard - Mata
      Kaca - Guthrie/4.3 Mil MID

        Hughes - Jenkinson - Lescott (I know) - Ivanovic - Baines

Do you think his absence will significantly hamper the Southampton attack or should they have similar potential going forward? I watched the Southampton - Fulham game and the attacking moves weren't quite clicking - but then against you did score without Ramirez against big guns earlier.

You don't sell RVP to avoid a 0.1 price drop. If you have other reasons to sell him (and I really don't think there are many), go for it.

Don't see better options at 7.8 for a mid. Looking at Fulham's fixtures & the fact that they do score plenty of goals, Duff seems a good option to me.

People might knock Wigan, but if you're gonna get Crouch in (66% involvement) with the Stoke attack which often disappears away, you can't dismiss Kone.

Isacki, have you heard anything more on Gibbs being a gooner. If his injury is serious I would get Rafa over the break. If fine then stick to that plan.

If a player is likely to rise 0.3 over a normal GW it's probably worth the risk, but not over an intl break for 0.1.

      0.1 in bank, 2 FTs

      Thinking either:

      A) Hazard to Cazorla, Fletch to Berba

      B) Hazard to Cazorla, then save a transfer to get out Stam/Fed next GW

      C) Fletch to Berba, then do the same, saving a transfer to take out Stam/Fed

      Cheers!

Think I need to get rid of Green before his price drops again. Only got 4.4 to spend, which leaves me scraping the bottom of the barrel ...
Basically, it's McCarthy (RDG) or Gazzaniga (SOU) as far as I can see.
      - McCarthy is in because Federici is injured, who has no return date on physioroom. Can't help but think I'll have to do this more or less wasted transfer again if Fed comes back this season.
      - I see Davis started the season at SOU, and I don't know why the change to Gazza.

Suppose I could ship out Demel as well since he's out for a few weeks, but then that another barrel I'll be head first in to scrape. Maybe Demel to Fonte (SOU), giving me a wapping 4.5 to spend on Ruddy. 4 point hit for that, ugh!!

      Advice much needed, thanks!

Anybody looked at Suarez stats recently?!

Boy is he trigger happy, but saying that the stats are really, really positive. He ain't a great finisher, but 40 shots, 27 of them in the box, 11 on target, 5 goals. 18 key passes.

The lad will get points by sheer weight of numbers..

OK, i'm playing it safe (and boring) and using my 2FT's to tidy my team up around the edges.

      Fed + Graham -> Bego + Lambert

which also means that i'll be making my transfers now then hiding in a cupboard for the next 10 days.

      Foster
      Baines, Hange, Rangel
      Cazorla, Hazard, Pienaar, Nolan
      RvP, Tevez, Lambert
